Cycling sunset to sunrise, coast to coast.
Cycling sunset to sunrise, coast to coast from Cumbria to Northumberland. This turned out to be a fabulous route from Bowness on Solway in Cumbria to Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. A great way to ride through one of the shortest nights of the year.

A King Arthur bike ride

A bike ride from London to King Arthur's castle in Tintagel, Cornwall, via Glastonbury Tor and hitting an absolutely massive storm in the second half. The storm was so bad that my camera was malfunctioning and I lost some footage, which is why the end of the vid is a bit patchy and the final bit was shot the next morning but at least you can see the sea!! :)

A ride from London to Jura, the Scottish island where Orwell wrote 1984, via Liverpool and an overnight ferry to Belfast, then Ballycastle and Islay. An Airbnb in Ballycastle but otherwise self-sufficient with sleeping bag, inflatable mattress and micro-stove for cooking. I was trying to minimise the weight of my bag and will likely do another video soon about packing for this trip.

A bike ride to visit where poet Philip Larkin lived in Hull, Yorkshire and to see his statue in the train station there. I went north from London up through Royston, Peterborough, Spalding and Market Rasen and over the Humber Bridge: about 318km total of mostly flat but rather windy farmland.

    How do you plan your route? For an international route like Venice to London, do you do it exactly the same way? And are you happy with your method? Thank you for this unique RUclips channel.

    • @londoncenturies

      Hey thanks for the comment. Short answer = I’m not 100% satisfied with my method, it’s still a work in progress, slowly getting better. I’ve tried most of the software out there, currently preferring RideWithGPS because its data about road surfaces seems more reliable (note: NOT perfect but not bad) better than most. It’s always a toss-up between flexibility and cost. For Venice-London, my top concern was keeping costs down so I planned a route ages in advance, with cheap Airbnb wherever possible but it meant I absolutely had to stick to schedule, no room for injuries or mechanicals. Big cities (Strasbourg, Luxembourg) are v expensive but in-between places can be very cheap (I seem to remember the airfield in northern France was less than £20/night with use of kitchen) so it evened out a bit. Then from there I just had to get back to London as quickly as possible. I suppose the alternative is to go by credit card all the way - maximum flexibility but also maximum price!

    That looked to be great fun! I did the solstice RIde to the Sun (Carlisle-Edinburgh) one year which was good but road surfaces was very poor in places. Yes, that was a lovely route and i fancy doing in daylight some time. But Carlisle - Edinburgh appeals too - I’m looking at a possible Newcastle-Glasgow-Newcastle to further explore the borders area. did you drive a long way or need many trains to set this one up? Anyway, brilliant as usual. you are one in a million, never stop being a civil servant in your clark kent day job. man you are one superhero. actually i guess this was one of your "sprints" to catch that sun, rather than the marathons across europe. true about the recent weather - feel sure is this is what global warming is doing to as in uk, flaky colder days with a occasional half-warmth, but by the gods spells of monsoon cold rain with bits of hail sometimes, wretched without goretex and/or a house......

    • @londoncenturies
      @londoncenturies Месяц назад

      Logistics: this one needed trains at both ends but I had an excuse to be in Carlisle, so it was really just the return leg (from near Alnwick, just north of Newcastle) that I had to stump up for. Weather: I share much of what you say below, climate obviously worries me, I’d thought at one stage of trying to calculate all my carbon emissions for these trips, particularly the intercity trips, to compare with cars, train etc. Might still do that, actually. But main point is that sitting in a car is SO BORING and doing it yourself… isn’t!! 😃
