Calico Flower Studio

Добавлен 3 мар 2021
Calico Flower Studio is a space for reflecting on art + life through the lens of mixed media. I'm Dani Michaux Samson - your humble artist and host. I create abstract, analog mixed media collages with an array of materials that I have collected over the years.
On this channel, you will find that my process is laid back and light on the tutorial front. I'm more of a "think-out-loud" kinda gal. You might hear some tips on technique, but my ultimate goal is to bring you into the mind of an artist and provide a peaceful and thought-provoking experience. Sort of like an art vlog. No expertise necessary.
All my love,
Dani
PS - All completed artworks are approved by my feline studio assistants, Dahlia and Clover. They will often stop by to check on me while I’m filming, so look out!

Cultivating Acceptance - Going With the Flow and Following Creative Energy #artprocess #artjournal
In this visual journaling session, I make an abstract mixed media collage in my handmade paper journal and contemplate how I've been cultivating acceptance in my life and in my creative practice. I realize that, once I learn to accept myself and my inner wisdom about what feels good, I can go with the flow with more positive energy and grace.
Cozy up, relax, and enjoy the process.

The Little Things - Journaling With Tiny Collage Scraps #mixedmedia #artjournal #upcycle
I like the combination of the different pieces of the repurposed on the handmade paper the meld together into something exciting and new. If you do decide to try out other layouts it would still be good too. I like to repurpose items for us in my art ie rusty flattened bottle caps, bent rusty nails, paper I’ve painted on that I can’t throw out. I never realized there was someone out there like me. Hello friend…
That's the magic of mixed media collage, isn't it? Giving the otherwise discarded a new purpose and new life ✨ thank you for watching!
Hi Dani It’s me again , Lorraine. Wow! What an exciting journey you had with your fiber arts piece. I hear you. I liked your using the u shape in describing the ride you took in this creation. You stuck with it through the hard part really feeling your way along in the dark. I made a saguaro at sunset in 1978 pieced and quilted.. it is 31x44 inches, truly a labor of love. I used to have a calico cat like Dahlia who had the sweetest disposition and the most precious mew. As you have guessed by now I’m binge watching your channel. So fun and interesting, Thank you for putting your creativity out there,
Hahaha binge away! 😄 thank you so much.
I LOVE kitty cats. Clover is so beautiful and fluffy. Now to your art. You do lovely and intuitive collage. I like listening as you meander along your creation. You are a wise young woman. I like doing collage along with abstract painting. I don’t plan out my work , but like you I do what I feel. I’m new to art even though I’m 68 years old. I was one who on,y knew how to paint stick figures. I’m surprised at what comes out at the end of my paintbrush. My family never did anything artistic, never discussed art ,. Nothing. However when I was 14 I was very depressed and started tearing pictures out of magazines. One day I decided to glue them on a board in a fashion that pleased me. In my mind I invented collage never having seen anything like it in my life. Fast forward from the mid 79’ s through the 80’s while raising four children on my own. I took them to museums bought art books when I couldn’t afford them and exposed them to all the art I could. To this day all are artistic choosing their own style and genre. Art was part of what has saved me from depression. Whe I create my stomach does flip flops and there is a quickening in my heart and wrist. Thank you for sharing your art with me. And thank you for listening.
Wow, thank you for sharing your story with me. Art can be so healing, and I'm glad you are still exploring your creative spirit 🧡
Loved watching you create this fun and unique art. You’ve inspired me to get back into collaging. I will definitely be returning . Currently I do abstract painting in series work
I'm so glad you're here! Thank you for (virtually) sharing your time with me! I used to paint primarily, and for a while I integrated both painting and collage into my work 😄
Always love your insights😊 I'm on this path myself and the resonance of your experience feels good to my soul. Thanks Dani for sharing your journey!🧡
Thank you for being here, I'm so glad you resonate and it feels good ❤️
fantastic video, watched and enjoyed till the end ☺☺
Thank you so much for watching! and stickin' around till the end! 😄🥰 🙏🏻
Awesome and fun!❤
Glad you liked it! Thank you for being here!
You are a breath of fresh air. Thank for you for being you. I love your videos❤️👩🎨
That means so much to me ❤️ 🥹 thank you for being here
I loved that
Thank you for watching!
Fun! Love your videos!
Thank you!! So happy to hear that 😊
I’m gonna start making pages with the little scraps, I love that❣️. I wondered too, how long did it take to do the page full of polka dots, a grid & a square flower❓. I wouldn’t have the serenity for that🤣🤣. Just lovely🦋🦋🦋
Yay you should try it! The page you are talking about took three sittings, probably about an hour and half each 😊 I did the watercolor first, then some collage, then more collage and some mark making.
That is a very comfy looking cat ☺☺
She really knows how to chill 😄
Magnificent!!
Thank you! 🧡
Simple and delightfully whimsical! Your sweet kitty is a great helper.
Thank you! She is always such a good helper 😸😽
Wow- your creativeness is totally awesome, I love your creative space, having some plants and all your materials, and the calmness, espresso like hearing the birds. Thank you for your mixed media collages, I love collaging also, and I save all scraps too! You’re an inspiration to all pf the creative world!
Aw wow that means so much to me 🥹 thank you! I love the calmness too 🥰 have a great day
❤ Love how this whole video vlog was presented through the progression of that final piece...loved how you shared your journey.
Thank you! 🧡
wanna collab? i love your style and i would love to see how our very different art forms would come together!
Hi DefterHornet, thank you for your kind words! I am not interested in collaborating at this time, but I appreciate you thinking of me for the opportunity 🙏🏻😊 I enjoyed checking out your work - your character Nou Nou is delightful. Keep creating and putting yourself out there. 🧡
@@calicoflowerstudio awww thank you!
I love your work, I loved the cat collage and would like to see the process !
Thanks so much! I have a habit of featuring cats in my work, haha. Are you referring to the one that I show around 6:18?
Great video! Thank you.
Thank you so much for watching! I hope it was inspiring 🧡
I like the use of textured background. It's an added nuance. I'm mainly a collage artist and was baffled, at first, as to what the heck you could do with those teensy bits. You amazed me. Thank you for expanding my understanding.
Thank you! It's one of my favorite things, using the little bits 😄🧡 I appreciate your watching. Love that collage can be approached from so many perspectives!
Thanks Dani, I always wanted to do something with my scraps, I have so much and don't want to get rid of 'em!!😅 Now I know why!👍🏼
They're special! 😄
Wow!!❤ from paper making to even binding, that is great!
Thanks! It is quite a process - very tedious, but I love that kind of stuff ☺️
Love this!!❤ I like the texture background! You've got a new youtube and insta subscriber in me! Just discovered you and I find it really inspiring, your narration is calm and like the process☺️
I'm so happy you're here! Thank you for subscribing and following 🧡 I hope you continue to enjoy the content (and the process!).
Very nice! This is a great prompt to get one's creative juices flowing. Always, I love the sounds of the birds in the background.
Thanks! I love mark making and how it does truly get the juices flowing! I do love the birds as well 🥰
Watching, listening and being inspired by your work is like a fine relaxing meditation to me. Nice to see your successes on IG as well. Thank you for your time in sharing your art with us.
Aw thank you so much! For being here and for your kind words. I'm so glad it can be a source of inspiration 🧡
I absolutely love sorting my collage fodder! 🎉🎉🎉
YESSSSS 😂 same!!
I can relate to the repurposing, it’s hard to throw away some packaging, boxes etc. I’m also a collage artist, and I love to make my own pots and vessels out of recycled materials. But it’s easy to become overrun with rubbish 😅 looking forward to exploring your channel! 👍🙏🙌🙌🙌
This is so true! I have to make a conscious effort to be selective about what I keep sometimes! That's so cool that you make vessels with recycled material 😀 Thank you so much for being here 🙏🏻
This is so pleasing to the eye. Great idea. Thank you for sharing ☺️ ❤️ love your helper 🥰
Aw thank you for being here! 😸
@@calicoflowerstudio my pleasure ☺️❤️
Love your process, arrangements and Composition of this collage. Interesting breakdown of the synopsis, behind your reasons for selecting collage papers, the Juxtapositions of each piece and the history of being a valued and repurposed entity in your art work. Love your channel. Keep on creating and inspiring us. Have a beautiful day 🌈📚🎨🌻💜
Oh my gosh, thank you so much for your kind words 🧡 that means a lot to me 🥹
First time watcher, and now a subscriber. Loved watching and listening to your video. I don’t really do collage. I love the idea of it, but can never seem to get the hang of it. However, you’ve inspired me to relook at it. And I adore your beautiful studio kitty cat. You were spot on about her not being able to resist the tissue paper. My studio cat is very similar - see an art project - must sit. 😻 I’m looking forward to your next video, and will go back and check out all the ones I’ve missed. Thanks!
Thank you so much! And yes, go for it! It's so fun 😋 you gotta love the studio kitties, always so curious 🥰
This is fascinating, watched and enjoyed till the end ☺☺
Thank you for watching and enjoying!
You know as an artist, i believe if we can touch peoples emotions , our purpose is complete. I absolutely loved this video. Made me cry. We feel the soul of the work . We feel the love tgat is put into it. I believe there is no beautiful or ugly art. But thank you, i really have to say, it's beautiful.
Wow that touches my heart so much, thank you for saying that 🧡 I totally agree
I live it and the idea of re purpose. I like the idea of those bits from old art, life paper ect being used in my art. Thankyou for sharing xx
Thank you! 🧡
nice
🤗🧡
I love it!!! ❤️
Thanks!!! 🙏🏻🧡
Aren't you a breath of fresh air. Subscribing!
😄 hooray!! Thank you! Enjoy 🧡
I love repurposing paper and use in college and other sorts of art projects! I love all your ideas, and the projects you create!❤️
That's awesome! And thank you so much 🙏🏻
This has been my most favorite video/podcast. I was inspired to look at my resources differently and not be so ready to purge what i deemed to small or insignificant. To slow down and look deeper to appreciate the beauty in shape and color and texture individually instead of seeking beauty as an outcome of the process, but to more deeply appreciate the process itself. I realized as I was writing this that this is a great way to look at life...to slow down to see and to appreciate each individual experience and person even, that we encounter, to seek the beauty within them . And what a great way to bridge differences and divides ...art to life , life to art. The outcome....to see the world and each other more deeply and appreciate them all for the good and beauty they posess instead of being so quick to dismiss so quick to ignore and deem seem insignificant....and we realky cannot hate that which we have discovered beauty in, that which we have come to appreciate for the details that give it individual beauty. ❤
Thank you so much for your words 🙏🏻 I couldn't agree more with you.
Loved the whole process, and the help of your cat, did you use crayons, in your art media process? Thank you, really enjoyed it!❤
Thank you for watching and enjoying! She is always a huge help, haha! I did indeed use crayons ☺️
what a stunning process, watched and enjoyed till the end 😊😊
Thank you so much, Chantelle 🧡
Excellent
Thank you 🙏
Thanks Dani. I love the unique process of just dropping the pieces and the symbolism of letting go. It's so freeing yet empowering. So happy to be inspired and learn a new art technique for my Visual Journaling (VJ). I'll have a go first before sharing at my VJ class for seniors next week at our public library.
I'm happy to share! Thank you so much for being here Anne. I hope you enjoy the process, and if you decide to share it with your class, I hope they enjoy it too! ☺️
What a great way to get your left brain out of the way and let the universe join in with your process. I love the result!
EXACTLY!! That's exactly right. Thank you for being here ☺️🧡
Ooooo that’s sounds like a fun way to do collage❣️❣️. I’ll definitely do this🩷🩷🩷🩷
Go for it! If you are up to sharing, then I'd love to know how it went.
This is so fun, what a wonderful process ☺☺
Thank you for being here! Glad you enjoyed it ❤️🤗
Thank you for sharing this process. It really worked for me being a Virgo perfectionist and wanting to control! I am definitely trying this out. I was thinking of the trimming of the edges before you then said you had framed it to allow them to flow over. Again I was already perfecting it but that works so well!! I would never have thought of that. Have you tried dropping the pieces all at once too??? That would be harder to stick down but fun too.
Thank you for watching! I'm glad it spoke to you 🧡 and yes! I have thought of that - dropping the pieces all at once. Haven't tried it yet, but I likely will at some point! I imagine it's a whole different experience.
I happen to paint in a similar kind of way but I never thought to apply it to collage art. Although my process continues further by taking the play into a bit more controlled final product. Even some of the pieces that end up looking like they were entirely planned out start the same way. I allow the paint to decide what it wants to become and then I allow it to use my hands to finesse it. It’s always a pleasure seeing you at work. This gave me an idea I can use in my classroom with my students who struggle with their collages. I had one of my classes make scrappy collages and some just couldn’t figure out the idea of taking random scraps and arranging them into a pleasing composition. Maybe this would let them experiment a little and loosen them up.
Wow, thank you for sharing that! Sounds interesting. Gravity and material as a co-creators has always fascinated me too 😄 If you try this with your students, I hope they have a ton of fun with it. It definitely pulled me out of my mind and into the process. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts 🙏🏻
@@calicoflowerstudio I am enjoying your collage immensely. I bought a frame to put it on my wall I just haven’t gotten around to it. I do have the collage sitting on my bookcase and I look at it every single day. When I do I will tag you on IG. Keeping an eye for a suitable partener for it since I have two frames exactly the same. 😉
I'm so happy to hear that 🫶🏻 please do tag me! And I'll keep that in mind, the second frame 😉
