i thought it was interesting as indulgent as these spin-offs were, it is still extremely rare for shinji to find a true happy ending with kaworu that does not cost his own autonomy as well as other people's safety. even in these spin-offs, shinji cannot with good consciousness accept the angel's unconditional love without cutting away others around him - the people who he doesn't understand, the people who can't understand him - and as a result, he dooms humanity by running off with the last angel. it still follows kaworu's og narrative in nge that this sort of love, albeit beautiful and obviously preferred by avoidant people, is ultimately destructive.

Shinji wakes up and realizes the Eva world is all a bad dream and gets to live happily ever after as a fruitcake with his husband Kaworu and his loving appreciating father. That's my headcanon.
