    Using a GUI text editor is not a noob thing. That s just pure brain rot, please have respect for others. Most devs use a GUI and it has nothing to do with being good at programming. There are plenty of reasons to use vim, neovim or helix. You don t need to shame others for not doing it.

    I've been taking my air compressor hose and spraying out the dust in my PC's for 15 to 20 years now... about once a month or so, give or take. But my 'couch" PC, where we watch movies and fights, etc, on a big dual screen-- started making an annoying fan noise.. Not too bad, but just enough that it needs taken apart and oiled or something....... So this time, as I'm blowing out the fan with my air-- I want to spin up the fan a bit more than normal and see if it might make the noise go away. So I blow all the dust out and I'm spinning the fan at crazy RPM's.. I can tell by the pitch that it has to be 20k RPM or something.. It's really high pitched... and I accidentally squeeze all the way with my air nozzle with a quick burst of 80 PSI or so.. and it screams to the moon for half a second and explod3s my fan. lol.. I accidentally spun it up so fast that it blew all the fins off and shattered into pieces. lol.... So I broke everything down and order3d another fan... I'm gonna change out the thermal paste since I have it all broken down.... It's a acer 7551 from like 2009, quad core, 64bit, and I put 16gb ram in it.. pulled the disk drive and put in an SSD with a caddy to dual boot with Nobara. This thing just never dies. haha. so I keep using it. I'm kinda glad that the fan flew apart, because now I can get rid of that da^n noise/vibration.. Moral of the story, sh^t happens-- we make mistakes. Fix it and move on. Cheers

    Funny enough actually the only really good GUI text editor in my opinion at least, is called zed. Just spelled how I just did instead of xed. That said. I'm pretty stuck in using neovim at this point. Normal vim following it. And vis is something I'm interested in but haven't spent the time to really mess with it. But it's basically like vim but they modernized it, and instead of keeping the legacy stuff they gutted all that stuff. I do like the fact I can make neovim into whatever I want. I can ad or remove whatever. Add or remove whatever plugins. And there are so many vim/neovim plugins the possibilities are nearly endless (at least for a text editor).

    • @_BLANK_BLANK
      @_BLANK_BLANK 3 дня назад

      Oh. The multiplexing. I'm pretty sure that's just built into normal neovim. You don't need a plugin for it.

    I don't think brodie missed the point of the article, I think the article was written without a major point clearly articulated. It was more of a thought than a concept. Though I think, in turn, brodie's video didn't really have much of a point, it felt like it was responding to nothing. Of course, here I am, watching a video about a video about an article, and I think this video also doesn't really have a clear point. Then again, neither does this comment.

    On minimalism, if that's primal, why choose Linux at all? Why use GNU? Why use a GUI? On platform metrics, if you can't measure the runtime behaviour of your program, how can you improve it's efficiency? I remember AT&T folk complaining about BSD folk adding command line args to Unix programs. Does that seem so bad now? There's much more to the Unix philosophy to each program doing one thing well. Unix supports tiny programs that do one thing because you can connect them to build complexity. See the Art of Unix Programming for coverage. Using your example of a text editor in a browser. If you think of a browser as a view into a different world, then why would you not want an editor in that world? How does ed, vi or emacs help in that scenario, ... just saying. I think people use computers in different ways, good UX reduces complexity and improves the efficiency of the user. I suspect you have workflows that work well for you that don't require all that stuff, and not only don't you care, you think that's not great. Despite all the negative press, without Windows dominance, computers would not be domestic appliances until they arrived on phones.

I tried using Garuda (arch based).. but I couldn't get the proper resolution for my weird plasma TV.. and also, the scroll speed was way too fast for my mouse and there was no way to adjust it.. On Nobara, it has built in sliders for scroll wheel speed and even overscan, to fix my resolution problem. So it has been great to use, in comparison.

    So I'm in the process of building my new computer and I just happened to come across this, I'm not very Linux deep. And I sympathize with your opinions heavily, I agree with your philosophy of being capable very much, I'm considering moving to NixOS, but I'm planning on doing lots of things with it. I guess I'm curious what you could say to convince me to really commit to learning as much as say, you

    • @jdanks
      @jdanks 19 дней назад

      first i would say if you are starting out dont use nixos, start with something that you can learn your way around the terminal first bc 1. nixos isnt that great right out of the box theres a fair bit of work you need to put in before its in a good state 2. you will never meet a smokeshow black hat gf like angelina jolie in hackers without being good in the terminal. me i got into linux because i was very interested in cyber security and becoming a straight up wizard. linux has all the good security tools in the repos of whatever distro you are using. all the good ""illegal copying"" tools are on linux, gaming is in a really good spot and valve getting involved with arch will only progress it further also people are becoming woke on how stupid kernal level anticheat is so its only a matter of time before all the big multiplayer games are accessable (all of those games run they are just blocking you from using them on linux). um tiling window managers are the best way to intereact with your machine hands down and all the windows TWM are garbage (however aerospace on mac os is pretty tight but still doesnt compete with linux native stuff). the linux penguin is really cool

    Software minimalism makes sense, but it does generally seem like it's more trouble than its worth, at least for a newbie to linux / unix. Why go through the pains-taking process to keep a functional system as minimal as possible when a fully-loaded desktop can be obtained for far less work? consider: a fresh install of fedora vs a fresh install of freeBSD. fedora, aside from a few drivers and codecs which are easy to install, is ready-to-use and simple to get started. FreeBSD, while also being a good system, requires more setup: messing around with the file system table and mount points, installing graphics card drivers and setting up a config for them, manually configuring wifi in some cases with network manager, manually configuring bluetooth, reading the (admittedly exceptional) man pages and the handbook to get things to work properly etc etc. It's a certified pain, and the reality is that the vast majority of users don't really care for it. Ideology and "proper" adherence to the unix philosophy and/or efficient use of their computer isn't their primary concern, and for better or worse they just want something that works out-of-the-box with a hassle-free setup. That's why macOS is so successful, it "just works" and is so simple your grandma can use it.
