"Carpenters: The Musical Legacy" — An Evening with Richard Carpenter (1080p)
On Saturday, April 27, 2024, I was joined by friend and mentor, Richard Carpenter, to discuss our recently published book (coauthored with Mike Cidoni Lennox, who was unable to attend the discussion) as part of the closing festivities for the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Downey, CA. This was followed by a formal proclamation and presentation to Richard by the mayor of the city of Downey, Mario Trujillo, as well as a plaque dedication, presented by Carpenters fan Erin Gatlin on behalf of fans from around the globe. Incidentally, Richard's appearance was kept a surprise until we walked out on stage, making this a most memorable evening.

As part of the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration at the Embassy Suites in Downey, I invited two of the world’s greatest studio musicians-Earle Dumler (Oboe and English horn), and Gayle Levant (harp), to join me in an afternoon discussion about their immense contribution to the Carpenters’ studio catalog. They tell some great stories, taking us behind the scenes during their years recordin...

CARPENTERS: Q&A, Ep. 4: A Conversation with Gayle Levant & Earle Dumler
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.2 года назад
Episode four features a candid interview with friends Gayle Levant and Earle Dumler. Gayle is heard on virtually every Carpenters album with the sound of her unmistakably lush harp, and Earle with his emotionally gut-wrenching oboe and English horn. Here they share a few of their favorite stories from the Carpenters years, as well as a few anecdotes related to the countless artists and major mo...
CARPENTERS: Q&A, Ep. 3: "We've Only Just Begun"
Просмотров 4 тыс.2 года назад
In episode three, I talk in-depth about how the Carpenters' sound evolved during the early years, also giving a track-by-track vocal illustration taken directly from the original master tape of "We've Only Just Begun." But first, I answer a couple of questions submitted by fans related to an unreleased recording of "Thank You For The Music," as well as Richard's ownership of the Carpenters tele...
SoCal Scene: "Celebrating The Legacy of the Carpenters"

It has been almost 40 years since the death of Karen Carpenter, but the music she and her brother, Richard, produced is still beloved around the world. Their story played out around Southern California and a new book documents it all. Spectrum News 1 journalist Tara Lynn Wagner visited Downey, where the duo went to high school, and stopped by Richard’s current home in Thousand Oaks, to trace th...

CARPENTERS: Q&A, Ep. 2: "A Kind of Hush" (Album)
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.2 года назад
In episode two, I talk about the Carpenters' seventh studio album, "A Kind of Hush," and how many of the songs were selected-including some nuggets of trivia related to several of them. Also, Richard personally explains the story behind the title track, here in his own words. But first, I address the question that many fans have asked over the years related to Karen's "work" lead vocals, and ho...
CARPENTERS: Q&A, Ep. 1

In episode one, I answer a couple of questions submitted by folks on the A&M Corner, "Carpenters" forum. More specifically, I talk about the original demo recordings submitted to Herb Alpert which ultimately got the Carpenters their record deal, and how those recordings contrast with the final master recordings heard on their debut album, "Offering." I also address the issue related to a number...

We loved them so....
How did he carry on.....😢
Absolutely incredible music arrangements.
The most , BEAUTIFUL voice, to EVER... sing a song! Miss Karen carpenter!
Anyone else get goosebumps hearing Richard play the beginning of Close to You ? chills.
You can tell he is absolutely still heartbroken for his sister. I bet he wishes they could’ve got old together. Rest in peace Karen you’re such a beautiful soul.
Late baby boomer here. Yes, The Carpenter’s were about pop music. Karen Carpenter, gifted with such a beautiful singing voice, really made their music special and memorable. Sadly, Anorexia Nervosa was medically, poorly understood at the time.

"We've Only Just Begun" was originally a short 1970 commercial for Crocker Bank. It was written by Paul Williams.
I love that at this Time this gentleman Is recolecting the treasured memories from The very same creator of CARPENTERS. Before to be late. He Is lucid, smart and still with a great capacity remembering and a great composer of all times too. Thanks for sharing.
Her voice .. his keyboards .. Timeless .. Stunning Music 🎶
This guy needs to move on.,
They are a perfect DUO that until today is unmatched.....
CBS could lose that Tony guy. His vibe the whole segment is so weird!! lol. Fucking morning shows are trash.
My youth... These songs bring back so much. Loved them then, love them now.
Richard and her his sister look alike a lot alike.
I swear on my parents. I have ALWAYS said, for YEARS. what Richard said at 2:37. that the Music Arranger, is the unsung hero in the music business. hearing Richard say that. you could have knocked me over with a feather... they should get as much credit for a massive HIT. in R&B, Pop, Country Music and Jazz. as the music producer does, and royalties. but they DON'T.
When I'm not quite feeling it, whatever "it" may be, I go to the Carpenters Gold album which I put on repeat and I say to myself, "It's going to be a Carpenters Day," and somehow, after a few hours, things start to feel okay again. And I listen to that album over and over again all day long.

So sad what a great 👍 talent surely missed .
I loved all of the songs you and Karen made. When i hear them to this day it takes me back to a wonderful time in my life. The purity in her voice was unreal. I wish she could have been saved and i believe she would still be singing today. What a loss of a beautiful life and gift to music.
I keep coming back To catch each track Single, double, triple You can hear the faintest ripple And the solar wind begins...
What a brilliant man musically
Was she double tracking it herself or was it done by the engineer? It’s so precise , it’s hard to believe it was natural.
why no links to the book?
Purity cult?
It was miraculous? Really? I wonder what something of real importance would mean to you, lol.
Chris is a TRUE historian. Check out his Q&A on "A Kind of Hush." Terrificness!!! That being said, at the beginning of this clip, you are set up to hear new details. Not much here that even the average fan doesn't already know. So lots of taking and fill for most of us. Regarding the Forsythe show: To say it more plainly. Karen--who was in NO condition to fly across the country, then across the pond at the time--was hoodwinked into the promotion of the 1974-1978 singles LP. Then, additionally, was urged to lie-if sheepishly-about Richard's absence. This was very unfair to her as she was not a good liar. There is much irony in how she ends 'Please Mr. Postman' with "STOP!" I'm pretty sure by that point in their duo career this was precisely how she felt. She looked exhausted and emaciated. The makeup person, who doused her in nearly clown doll-level makeup, should have been fired on the spot. In their defense, no amount of makeup or clothing choice would have masked the seriousness of her condition by this point. There were also moments you can't tell if she was about to lose her balance from dizziness/exhaustion or if it was her intentional stage performance style. STILL, her "live" vocals on Forsythe's show sound pretty damn near the recordings. Especially 'White Christmas.' The entire closing segment was perfection, except for when Bruce joins her. It WAS his show after all. My LONG STANDING opinion has been this: Following the Christmas special in 1978, they both should have taken a 2-3 year break and get some perspective--not to mention returned health. While she did live on for almost 5 years after the albums's release, it was a constant downslide because she/they did not STOP. There is even a recorded quote of her flippantly saying "You can't stop. The only way you can stop...is if you die."
Is soft rock not part of RR hall of fame consideration? Serious question. Because, why in the F isn’t the greatest, best selling soft rock band of all time in there????!!
Quality is everything. The Carpenters’ music is high quality. Some people may dislike their music, but they can’t deny it’s great quality music.
The mix for the new Christmas album is totally awesome! 💿
Oh, and Richard, alcohol will never fill that hole in the soul! But guess WHO can?! J-E-S-U-S! Seek and find Him. Then, write a song for Him! He'll never leave or forsake you!!
What? A book that came out two years ago?! Why wasn't this advertised more?! Sheesh! That's tragic. Will try to find a copy! These two were just amazing and great talents! Essential voices and sounds of the 70s!!
Loved the Carpenters since the 70's....& have CD "Love Songs" (awesome)
I was always put off by the way he was parading his skeletal sister around the talk shows near the end when she clearly belonged in the hospital.
Karen was a great drummer but she didn't play on their records. Herb Alpert had the iconic session drummer Hal Blaine play on their big hits.
Hal played excellent for John Denver as well--which no doubt you already know. I just thought I'd add to the accolades!
@Tears77529 you're correct. He was John Denver's drummer for around a decade. I'm a fan of The Wrecking Crew and many other session musician players which you could call unofficial groups.
He should be proud, and I’m sure Karen would be too, their music will be played for generations to come and will continue to bring people joy 🙏🏻
I take melatonin for sleep. I take 5 grams a night. Children take it to. Without it, I would be a real insomniac. But, I think that Richard Carpenter is a terrific musician. I like “Rainy Days and Mondays Bring Me Down “.
❤❤
"Viewed as radioactively square".........yeah, by a bunch of morally bankrupt music executives that wanted to sell tits and ass. Unfortunately that mindset won out, which is why society is poisoned by what the industry still calls music today. Anyone willing to show some skin (and shill for the Democratic party) is offered a deal, hence why "music' today is so comically bad. They aren't looking for talent, they're looking for controlled assets. Karen Carpenter had more talent than all of these losers combined.
Really a Legend....their music remains forever. Richard Carpenter is a genius ❤
Ok. I apologize interesting now I can ,find the book , . Looking forward to finally hearing Richard Carpenters points of view over his famous , sister , late beautiful voice Karen Carpenter.
They have hardware not Richard knock it off the disrespect.
They were normal while their peers went off the deep end on acid, rebellion, unbridled sexuality etc. That's why they were considered 'square' in comparison. They were just conservatives ie conserving traditional values while everyone else was tearing everything in reach down.
Let me guess. Because of side 2's length, cassettes had to fill out side 1 with a short edit. Couldn't Richard just put in an unreleased cut?
The tone from that piano was so good
RICHARD needs JESUS ! so he can have closure . and make music with Karen in eternity with the MASTER ...
How much I wished I was there! Good wishes for Richard from Texas.
My very favorite of all time!! ❤
