Retired early (at age 46) in Dumaguete, Philippines in 2022. This channel is mostly about life and adventures in the local area, and getting the most out of early retirement.
New beach house and motorbike! - final update?
This video shows my great new beach house, garden and marine sanctuary, plus my extra big bike. Also why I stopped making videos for months, with info on a common trap for expats moving to the Philippines.

Philippines Road Trip Trailer 2024
Просмотров 7129 месяцев назад
Siargao, Bucas Grande, Panaon, Leyte, Mindanao, Cebu. A short teaser trailer for more detailed vids to come, about our 16-day motorcycle (and boat/ship) tour around the southern Philippines in the dry season of 2024. THE BEST ROAD TRIP OF MY LIFE SO FAR! I hope this inspires other people here, including expats retired in the Philippines, to give motorcycle touring a go.
Philippine Motorbike Touring Tips

As requested by subscribers, here's my vid about motorbike touring in the Philippines. I'll leave Dumaguete on my Kawasaki Versys650 this month for a long ride through Mindanao, Siargao, Leyte etc and make more vids about the trip.
Dumaguete's cheapest day trip?
Просмотров 58510 месяцев назад
Amlan is only 45 minutes from Dumaguete and has a range of inexpensive attractions: pools, waterfalls, nice cafes and a petting zoo (yes, you can touch the baby crocodiles if you want). Thamara and I checked it out one Sunday afternoon, and it was possibly the cheapest day-trip we'd done. Take your Filipina partner coz they will love the animals. #dumaguetephilippines #daytrip
Sunday ride with my buddy Bill
Просмотров 21211 месяцев назад
While I love being a retired expat in Dumaguete, Philippines, there's only two roads that can take you out of the area. That means you keep riding those roads again and again. So it's better to do it with company. BIll suggested we do a Sunday afternoon ride going south, which was fun. No road footage in this short vid though, since I've already published these road sections before.
Philippines 6 month visa in 2024
Просмотров 92611 месяцев назад
Guess what? Expats living in the Philippines can still get 6-month visa extensions, and you don't even need to go to the Immigration office! I lead you through the steps in this short video. The Dumaguete immigration office is quite efficient, but still, why join the queue 13 times a year if you don't have to?
Danjugan Island
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Год назад
Danjugan island is a sanctuary near Sipalay (Negros Occidental, Philippines), which is a great holiday place a few hours away from Dumaguete. The island has beaches, caves, lagoons, reefs, unlimited coffee and is very, very quiet. The reserve is managed by the Philippines Rainforest and Reef Conservation Foundation Inc. I loved the day trip there, and it was so tempting to try and live there (w...
Fortress Sipalay (mining ruins)

Sipalay is a great beach and island destination a few hours away from Dumaguete or Bacolod. It's not all pretty though - the ruins left behind from the Maricalum copper mine feel like a post-nuclear disaster area. Definitely worth a visit if you can get there and handle the heat. #philippines #sipalay #ruins
Fast and Efficient Philippines 🇵🇭

Back in Australia for Christmas made me think of the things that are actually faster, easier and more efficient for an expat retired in the Philippines. First time producing a vid with my phone, so please ignore the hiccups. #expat #philippines #dumaguete #retirement
Dumaguete Roadrunners and the Badian highlands

The Dumaguete Roadrunners are the oldest motorcycle club in Dumaugete, I hear. So I met up with some expat members and went for a day out - riding the Badian highlands on Cebu island.
Best Philippines riding safety tip

If you live in Dumaguete or anywhere else in the Philippines outside of the large city centres, you'll benefit from this tip to safe motorbike/scooter riding, avoiding the dangers on the roads. Might help in the cities too! Following my crash from a few months ago, I swear by this now as the biggest single improvement to my safety. #philippines #expat #motorbike #scooter #safetytips

Well, I did that video two years ago..it's worse now since the new Unitop got built.
Hi, I'm doing it step by step. But I only have the option for 1-2 months :( Did they remove the 6-month option?
@@cpa3259 yes the removed it
27 November 2024......I enjoyed your video ! I already have a good place here in Tagum City, Mindanao. Cheers !
Be careful of crocodiles.
@magnapearl9506 haha, the tribal chief said daytime was safe, the crocodiles get active at night. Besides, that little kid had been jumping into the water for the last 30 minutes. That gave me the confidence to try swimming there, and go paddle a tiny canoe up 'main street'.
Where is that place mate, is it Dauin?
@@theone1750 yes its in Lipayo, just north of Dauin.
Hi AJ, this is Jon and Pilar. We met you at Dulce Vida back in the day. Good to see that you are posting new content! Your new place looks awesome. 👍🏻 Just wanted to mention that we arrived in Australia yesterday. First time here, and we are stoked! Currently staying in Melbourne and we plan to tour around your beautiful country for three months. Cheers mate!
@spyke6731 wow, have fun and stay warm in the early Spring weather
@spyke6731 oh... and while in Victoria I'd recommend you visit the Goldfields stuff like at Ballarat and also the Grampians. Skip over to Tassie (where I lived for 12 years), you don't want to miss that, and it's completely different to the Philippines.
I think they need something to do. Hence start a business.. Pattaya great example. Thousands of bars
@elvantonucci695 I prefer hobbies, travel and adventure. If you start a bar you can't do those things.
Envious of the comfortable lifestyle 🎉🎉🎉
@MrJrweir hahaha, yes it's an excellent relaxing place, plus the marine sanctuary can get a bit exciting.
New viewer…. Great video… amazing house and location 👏🏻👏🏻
@jmfarrell5 yeah I'm really happy living here.
Good to see your back mate ,,,, great place to live ,,,, looks great,, was that Tamara on the couch my friend?
@sirdino6967 yes mate, that was her on the couch
Stayed next door to you a few months back in the resort. Enjoy & stay safe. It really is a beautiful spot😃We return in 2 months time.
A very nice video sharing of your "New beach house and motorbike! - final update?"! Be healthy and happy, be safe and stay safe... Full support already. Best of luck and regards Po/Ned 👏🎉👏
Thanks for a great update🙏 Lovely house and location - you're living the dream - enjoy your moments💖 Regarding your RUclips channel - fully understand you feel some kind of pressure; could it be a solution to make some less stressful video update once a month or so, maybe a live update just 10 minutes without the hassle of editing? - because it is really wonderful to be able to follow your life situation - -somehow I feel I know you all though you "just" speak into your camera...🙏 And you inspire us who are about to move to PH soon.. I appreciate your work and the connection🙏 - sending you light & love 💖
💚
Everything ok mate, you've been quiet.
@aitp I'm fine, thanks! Going to make one more as an update.
Roadrunners has changed, i was a member about 10 years ago, original member when the club first started. No club colours on the ride and allowing bikes under 400cc to ride with you. Recognise Arnie, but none of the other members. Good to see its still going though !
is the 6 month visa temporary ban have beem lifted?
Yes, but only from doing it online, I think. Haven't checked recently because I'm on a 6-month visa.
Your last hack had me laughing because I sleep with special ear plugs that look like headphones but literally block any noise out. If it isn't roosters, it's dogs or motorcycles with no mufflers. Also, I can attest that neither the aggressive approach nor the eye-for-an-eye approach work either haha
Those ear plugs sound good. It doesn't worry me much anymore coz my noisy bedroom aircon drowns out most other sounds when I'm sleeping. Ahh sweet white noise!
AJ how you been my friend ? been going to any good partys ?
Yes, the parties have been great
@@ajphilippineexpat i need to get to one of those hopefully soon AJ ..cheers mate .
You two must work out a lot...both of you have broad shoulders and big hands.
Did you ever end up doing those other apartment complex videos?
No, just that one when I lived there
Hi AJ hope you going well mate ,,Seen you at Martys house party ,, looks like fun , im an Aussie in Melbourne i hope to go to a party like that when i get there ,,, looks like fun mate

Hi AJ! My name is Ivy form Christian Filipina. I love your videos! Would you mind sharing your email address for a possible paid partnership? Thanks in advance and more power to your channel!☺
🤗 welcome!
Looks awesome mate. Beautiful places!
Yeah, it was an awesome trip.
Gorgeous place. I could live there. Good video.
Yup the metal scene in Dumaguete city since before very strong and united
I haven't seen any metal bands playing here for a year.
My mom's family were pig farmers. We raised chickens, down wind from the dairy farm next door. Sounds like home, sweet home! LOL 😂😂😂😂
A few years ago, my youngest son got sent to Amirillo for work. As soon as he got there, he called home and said, "I hate it here. Everything smells like cow shit!" LOL LOL LOL
Overall, the air at Dulce Vida was fresh and fine, except for that special time when a parasitic plant flowered just out the back of my apartment.
Why did you edit out the deflowering scenes? 🤣
Hahaha! I'm new to using AI pics. After doing the Cthulu stuff I tried the virgins but ran out of 'credits'. The first pics I made looked great at first but then you saw they didn't all have legs!
My wife wants the Bristol maxi 400, as no switching gears needed.. its on the list. Your thoughts?
That'd be good if you don't like switching gears but I'm totally used to it. Rev, shift, rev, shift...
Great info mate
Nice cheap day out mate. Good to see you both.
Congrats on 1k subs!
Everyone is a victim of their own choice…providing they have choice which you do. So in choosing to put her thru Uni, which may have been a nice gesture, you know the risk that she may very well become independent and not need your monetary support after that. iIf she stays with you I assume she will want to get a 6 day a week 12 hour a day job after her degree. Whoops. If she stays with you, you will be in the same boat time wise. You may as well be single. How about just letting them be good little wives, cooking, cleaning and raising kids and not trying to turn them into entitled, wester style feminists. A bit cynical, but I could be right.
Haha, thanks, I get your comment and had to laugh. Things have since changed anyway and she's doing the housewife stuff now.
@@ajphilippineexpat Cool, I bet you end up with too many armchair experts on youtube but I couldn’t help myself. Enjoy!
looks like a great little day trip AJ ,,,,,, cheers mate
Yes it was a good one. The little zoo didn't excite me much (oooh can I touch the Shetland pony?) but the average Filipina girl would love it.
@@ajphilippineexpat nice to be out and about my friend
Why not take off the masks while videotaping?
Hey, took me a while to remember why. But that segment was inside a condo lobby and the security insisted that masks be worn.
Tried convert uk licence to filipino in cavite ,logged on lto portal ,entered my details , next step said go nearest lto for medical ..did this got medical certificate ..back to the internet lto portal , enter medical certificate number ..says does not recognise number !!! Tried again ..same !!! Back to lto were had medical test ..said lto portal does not recognise number ...was told we are on different system to them !!!!!!! Only in the philippines ....
Oh no, that's a shame. The licence medical tests near the Dumaguete LTO are just scams for the govt. They take your money, test almost nothing, then give you a clean bill or health.
Do you find your leather jacket too hot over there? Thanks
Haha, it's a mesh jacket made from ballistic nylon. It's hot if you're standing still in the sun but when moving, or there's a good breeze, it's comfy.
Always a big fan AJ. Legendary steps along you expat journey to the PH as one of it's youngest foreign members. I'll be there soon claiming your title :) (I'm 40) . Thinking either calapan or iloilo. Not a big beach bum so dumaguete seems too hot and im happy to do my own thing in the most remote areas of the philippines hehe (I've spent a good amount ther so know how to operate).
Hey thanks, go wherever you like. The main benefits of Dumaguete are the large expat community, the food options and how there's so many getaway locations close to town.
@@ajphilippineexpat Yea actually in my research i've recently learned there are many large expat communities there in the philippines, I just think the youtubers took over dumaguete haha. EG: Puerta galera is over 50% foreigners according to my contact who lives there. All bars and debauchery haha. I actually think i wanna live a more isolated in the more true philippines though, away from too many other expats. As my early plans arent retirement and chatting it up with othe classy expats.. But rather starting some businesses there, invest in the economy and helping the country a better place for everyone. Especially with a nice girl to motivate me! So currently considering Calapan - its a bit away from puerta galera, and far enough from manila that there is no traffic, almost zero foreigners.. Just a true little Filipino town. But not so isolated that i couldn't work there , they have great quality PLDT fiber since its not over populated / over subscribed. Somewhere perhaps a bit outside of town on the mountains , rent 3-4 buildings, build my own little estate - as long its within where they can run the fiber. (my finances a bit different than the average retired expat to say the least haha) . Else ilolio also on my list, a small chunk of foreigners there, especially you can find them in mega world at the bars, but not crowded with em like dumaguete, puerta galera, manila, lapulapu, etc. Met a brit who runs one of the bigger solar companies there, very chill classy man. I'll be there in may, gonna possibly look at some houses while im there, see if I can meet a cool real estate agent. Final move is scheduled for november, possibly earlier depending on my how 2nd company goes (doing a tech startup, lots of fun). Trying out the toronto to manila direct flight (brand new ULTRA long range A350) Cheers and keep up the good work. Learning a lot from your videos despite my fairly large existing PH knowledgebase.
Hi I hear on your first extension you can’t apply for a 6 months only after the 29 days first extension you can apply for a 6 months extension is this true ? When you leave on a visa extension do you keep the extension and can return? Or do you start over when you enter the country again?
I think you have to do a 1 month extension first. If you have a 6 month extension and leave the Philippines and return, it all starts again from scratch.
@@ajphilippineexpat yes
I just saw you and your girl on Kevins channel and I just subscribed to your channel.. thanks for the great information but I plan on using JRC visa for all of my extensions.. I hope jrc can do 6 months but if not now I know how to do it.. thank you very much sir.. I'm going to check out your other videos 👍👍🤗😎
Great! I hope you enjoy then.
Additional life hacks: Wear swimming trunks with liners for shorts, even when you have on underwear. That way if you forget TP you can use the underwear, dispose it, and still have liner "Support" Bonus: If you wear shoes and socks, you have 2 socks... Velcro wall around window and shower curtain if you rent a place with jalousie windows. That stops most of the aircon leaking out, and you can take the shower curtain down and open the windows during a brown out.
Haha, yeah I've got big ceiling fans in my place now. It's great.
I have a friend who lives near the Palinpinon Rd and the Diversion Rd. which wasn't finished when I left in 2020. I used to cycle with him all over the area.
I ride my motorcycle around a lot, the new (almost finished) diversion road allows you to go from north of Sibulan to south of Bacong. It's near my house.
Found your channel Via the Video you did with Kevin an Jen. I lived in our house in Mindanao in 2017, then moved to Dumaguete for 2 years. We returned due to Covid Lockdowns. I'm a karaoke singer, but am planning to take it to the next level in the Philippines. I sing Karaoke regularly in Nashville Tenn, at curiously enough AJs Bar on Nashville. I sing old country, rock (spenning 50s until 2020, mostly 70-80-90) and while the Pinays may be into newer stuff with the advent of free FB, Tick Tock, I feel there's a market to entertain Expats who want to hear country and or rock. I sing over 2,000 songs, and hope to find musicians who are good. I can tailor my show to what the hosts of a party, or an establishment wants. I'll probably have a 13A visa, but may just be on Balikbayan status. I'm not looking to play for personal income, the band and manager can have the money. I will watch some of your content to help you out and to learn things too!
Haha great!
Hi AJ, just wondering when can you apply for the 6 month visa do you need to wait for your first 30 days to apply? I will be arriving there February 20 and intend on staying a total of 6 months. Cheers from Australia🍻
The info in my vid is for a visa extension, so yep you get your first 30 days free on arrival so long as you have an onward ticket (or ARC) and I think your next extension has to be another 30 days, but then you either go back to the immigration office every 2 months or do it online twice a year. I was pleasantly surprised (amazed?)when I found out 6 months was good online, had to share that.
Sweet! Good information to know!
Yeah thanks, most people didn't know that.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it, it was a great island to visit.
Nice trip
Haha, yeah a great trip except for not be able to visit the distillery, and then the crappy resort, but generally it was all fun.
Maybe Nickel
It was a copper mine, but also a bit of gold and nickel maybe.
