1:45 yea man. This is my epic liquor culture shock on my first trip to Cebu:
So the girl im dating is doing a beauty pageant, u know how they do.. Takes like 4 hours to get rdy so I drop her off, and me being the gentlemen I am, decided I will get done up too, so I research the best rated men's barber in cebu city and grab a grab. The hairdresser is QUITE the professional, he sits me down in a LUXURY lay flat seat, puts me vertical, blindfolds me and begins to give me a massage! lol. I'm like "Sir, Um I just asked for a haircut?" - Oh no worries sir - Complimentary! I'm like wow okay but im not too into massages, so we skip that , loads me upright and does one of the best haircuts of my life, than my beard too - of course using traditional hand razors, nothing electric. Extremely skilled barber. 10/10 job. Haircut was like 200 pesos or so, I tip him a 1000 pesos and begin to walk out the door.. But in the mirror what do I see? JOHNNIE WALKER.. There is a BAR IN THE BARBERS! LOL. You don't have to go "5 minutes" , I go over and literally the girls who you'd normally pay cash and get a receipt too (my barber handled that payment since as a tourist i didnt need a receipt).. I proceed to ask for a shot of johnnie walker black scotch (decent stuff), its 100 pesos ($1.80).. They poor the whole glass, cuz they are cashiers lol, not bartenders. You cant beat the value. The best hair cut, the best service. and i had a great conversation with an old expat from Switzerland who visits this "bar(ber") all the time.
Like 100% illegal in canada and most western places because "hygiene" laws. not a problem in PH. Alcohol is one of the best disinfectants after all haha. I've seen booze in pretty much everywhere u can imagine, arcades, pharmacies, random street vendors, you name it. If it not nearby, you can literally ask any random person on the street to go get you some, offer him 100 pesos and he'll do it - he won't rob you either. (Well he might in manila, but not anywhere else in the philippines). Though chances are he will trust you and if he has the cash on hand, will go buy it for you and not over charge you, just the price he paid + tip for the gas. There are no friendlier people on the planet. You can also do this at any 5 star hotel if the concierge is allowed to leave the property, theyll literally go shopping for you anywhere nearby and bring whatever you want to the room, charge it to your room/credit card, not all concierges are allowed, but this is a standard feature offered to all guests at the marriot manila for example (theyll send a bell hop if the concierge has no backup avail)
So yea, forgot about worrying if there is a bar or liquor store around. Booze is everywhere in the philippines. One of the reasons im moving there too in 2024. See you soon PH. Tho im aiming at iloilo, not dumaguete. Haven't seen any youtubers that live iloilo, but i had quite the great time. It's unlike any other city in the philippines, clean, safe, relatively modern advanced, no traffic, people drive NORMAL? .. Check it out someday if you haven't been AJ.

Hey thanks there. Iloilo is on my list but I've got friends who've been and said things like "nice to visit but wouldn't want to live there".

@@ajphilippineexpatYea obviously everyone has their own experience. My experience there , to use twitch speak, was POGGERS! I met a few expats at a bar called nearby the courtyard marriott (stay there, its like a 6 star hotel for $100, insane level of service, tho I can get you better rates .. Personally i dont have to pay for marriott hotels anymore that are that low points cost - got over 1.5million points and they keep comin),
The bar called "Bottle Ground" (interesting, isnt a popular expat coffee shop in dumaguete have ground in the name?).
Each of the 3 guys (Brits) i met at Bottle Ground had filipina wives and loved there life there. And yea, its so different than any other city ive been to in PH (and ive been to over 30), So clean. Very light traffic. Almost zero crime. But if you want that filipino chaos, its got it in the old downtown market too, justs the newer area called "MEGAWORLD" is very modern and light traffic prolly cuz locals cant afford much there (its still very cheap by our standards)
It's kinda far from beaches and stuff tho, so prolly not your thing, but i'm not a big beach guy. More about the city life for now since im not retiring (gonna be kind of a digital nomad, I work online). I can always buy/rent a 2nd property on the beach later. Or heck , several of them if I want :)
Anyways I haven't made my final decision, im gonna check out dumaguete a short time before I decide, but probably only 1 week. Sometime after May.

lol . I love how americans think there local state/county is the entire "USA" .. sorry its not . In america how it actually works, complicated as hell: every state, and in some cases, even county has different liquor laws. Some are like most of canada where only government controlled liquor stores may sell liquor. Where as most, yea you can buy it at the freakin walbogs (walgreens pharmacy).
List of states where the state's that imposes some forms of liquor control:
Alabama, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
Note liquor vs beer vs wine is also controlled differently. In many of those states, u can get beer and wine everywhere, but not liquor cuz it either A) needs a license so expensive only specialized liquor only stores can afford it. B) its fully government controlled, they even run the liquor stores, so they are few and far between, not on every street corner. Same in most of canada, beer adn wine avail at gas stations, but liquor can only be sold at officially government ran liquor stores. (But we also have provinces that vary, EG: Alberta is essentially american laws, anything goes, but you do need a liquor license to sell it , but its RELATIVELY cheap to get the license so its sold at a low more places, such as grocery stores).
technically you even need liquor licenses for selling it in the philippines.. But yea, its very much not enforced, you can even tell the police you don't have one and theyll be like ya so ? poor me a shot! More fun in the philippines! (It's not a crime, its a regulation and at worse you can be slapped with a small fine, likely only applies to manila though)
and I just googled it: the license costs 2000 php a year lol ( $36 usd) and thats for the most expensive version that allows liquor, if u just wanna sell beer and wine its 400 php
