Have also been jinxed by the relay connection at the bottom of the soleniod, failed on a 2021 motor after 3 years, failed one had soleniod vented, Replacement starter 3 revisions newer and has a sealed solenoid. I expected better from Mercury. Happy with my 200 dts otherwise. Just broke my trust in this otherwise excellent motor

Have you tried hooking up Diacom to a new Merc outboard? Back in the days of CDS there wasn't much difference. Wondering how much it will do compared to G3.

Great starter troubleshooting video. I’ve used the same trick for years, watching the volt meter to see if there is a drop during crank. It looked like some corrosion on the positive cable. Also weird to see the 2 forward nuts on the throttle body were so heavily rusted but the aft ones were not. It almost seamed like there may have been a raw water leak spraying around in there, which could have killed the starter. I guess you won’t know until you get the engine running.

Hey Justin! I’ve been watching your videos for a while now and I was wondering if you had any advice on how I could jump from automotive mechanic to marine mechanic as an entry level tech

I've only seen a couple of those starters fail I think less than a handful. Not too bad to diagnose and replace. I've been in the marine industry for just about 17 years now. At the place that I work we are mostly dealing with bass boats and aluminum stuff.

I really appreciate your videos involving FP generators. We have a FP Mini 8 "Icemaster" generator on our sailboat. During a trip over the summer, the generator was running fine with a steady load when it suddenly stopped producing voltage. I've done all the troubleshooting I can think of and nothing. As is your vid, I've tested output on the generator and get 0v. Is there anything you can suggest or am I looking at having to pull the generator too? Again engine runs fine - but no output.

My Sundancer 280 is at Shell Point Marina. You almost caught it on your camera but you turned around to go the other direction. Bummer. It sits on a double rack on the front north side. Just in case you go there again. Love the channel still.

Glad you're OK. Sad to see a boat only two years old can be considered a total loss when the motor still functions fine and the fiberglass is fine -- just a bunch of mold remediation and rewiring is needed.

Thank god it’s almost November Justin-you all have taken enough crap for one season.Cleaning up that mess looks like a nightmare-watching all the big insurance companies pull out of Florida will be even worse because they can’t cover the costs. At whatever point they have to tap out-or make it mostly impossible to afford coverage and that’ll be the issue long after the mess is picked up.Waterfront property may become un-insurable.
