    I've been interviewed for solutions architect roles at Microsoft and Amazon (and failed at both). This title ("Solutions Architect") is a very deceptive one. If you're thinking that this role is a technical one, you're going to be thoroughly disappointed. This role, at least in the big tech, requires some serious customer handling skills. Technical expertise is a distant second skill and you need be even good at it ! For example, I know someone who used to work at a product company where I spent several years. He worked as a manager for a practice. Never saw him work on a technical project. He cleared only one basic certification while being a part of the organisation for almost 2 decades (while the rest of us were threatened with expulsion, if we didn't clear 3 levels of this certification). He basically knew how to show off as an experienced mature guy with a managerial bent. He got hired by Microsoft a few years back. Similarly another guy (a colleague of a friend) got hired by Google as an AI manager when he doesn't even have one Google certification. Another guy whom I've known personally now works for a very famous investment banking giant in a very senior executive position overseeing the company's enterprise wide AI/ML direction. Again, he has no certification but he's good at hosting q&a's or hackathons on these topics. Moral of the story is don't fall for these stupid titles; unless you are street smart, unless you have the skills to fool people into believing that you're some exceptional genius, your certifications are worth zilch and you won't get the job.

But you must be willing to work your ass off and he isn't free. He hosts free webinars every week where he answers questions from the audience about this kind of topics and he has excellent content on his channel with great advice. That being said, there is a lot of great advice to be learned from the videos on this channel too.

    As an SA, I came from a Software Engineering background. I have an absolute love/hate relationship with being an SA. Some days I miss coding and other days I’m so happy I don’t have to dig into sloppy codebases. In my day to day I couldn’t imagine not having a technical background. I’m highly customer facing, but all the questions I field are highly technical. If I didn’t have a background in software, i think I’d have a hard time comprehending many of the architectural components. I build architectures and whiteboard on the spot to solution ideas. I’ll start my day with 2-3 calls and by the afternoon 3 more calls have been tacked on to my schedule. This means I’m dealing with 6-10 different customers facing dozens of different problems, dozens of different components and hundreds of different moving pieces. This alone ensures you need ti know a lot. But you will NOT know everything so you need to also be resourceful. Software engineering is a different type of hard from Solutions Architect. I find SA roles more demanding, but SWE more complex. They’re both demanding and complex.

    I think it's a bit ironic how the last guest here, Luca is simply a very bad speaker. Yet if this is still a customer facing role where you are constantly communicating with others, I’d say he’s got a lot of work to do in this area, go figure

    What a SA does!? Humble yourself. Be a soundboard for the customer. We are not break-fix engineers. We are visionary and help to outline the overall goal of that customer’s specific vision and goals. 1. Be very outcome focused. 2. What is the customer/business trying to accomplish. Help them save cost. 3. Be able to tie the pain points back to the business goals for each client/customer. 4. Know a good specialist. 5. Life long learning. 6. Gain trust with cost optimization. 100 - do you know what it is ? 200 - can you explain it? 300 - have you done it? 400 - can you show someone how to do it, in-depth?

    You will likely get loads of errors when trying to deploy SAM if you do not also add further permissions. For me, I just added the following inline permissions JSON: { "Version": "2012-10-17", "Statement": [ { "Sid": "AllowApplicationInsightsActions", "Effect": "Allow", "Action": [ "applicationinsights:CreateApplication", "applicationinsights:DescribeApplication" ], "Resource": [ "arn:aws:applicationinsights:us-east-1:211125595032:application/resource-group/*" ] }, { "Sid": "AllowResourceGroupActions", "Effect": "Allow", "Action": [ "resource-groups:CreateGroup", "resource-groups:Tag", "resource-groups:GetGroup", "resource-groups:GetGroupQuery" ], "Resource": "*" } ] }

    38:45 can you make a full video regarding this subject here. So after you applied for a job for lets say cloud engineer etc on linkedin, then you go to the company page > employee section (all on linkedin/+ any other possible ways) and message 2-5 employees with the job title you applied for. And what is a good copy and paste message you can possibly send to start of the conversation with plus to also see who responds back. Shittt maybe you can also try messaging the hiring manager too. This would be awesome if you can do a step by step video like once a week. I wouldn't mind being part of it soon, as the guinea pig of attempt to transfer from retail to Cloud.
