Huddersfield at Christmas
Просмотров 262Месяц назад
Huddersfield at Christmas, Getting up at 5am is worth it for all my many fans, both of them. What can you say about St. George's Square? It was 6am on a Monday morning so the early commuters would no doubt be cheered up by the beautiful Christmas lights and the impending arrival of the holidays. 'O Holy Night' is the song in the video, apparently voted the UK's favourite Hymn, so beautiful. Ple...
Holmfirth: Last of the Summer Wine, Then and Now

Last of the Summer Wine ran from 1973-2010 making it the longest lasting tv comedy in the world. It was filmed in various locations, but was based in Holmfirth, where the homes of many of the characters were. In this video I've aimed to include scenes of the most commonly used locations, I will include more in my next video, any suggestions are most welcome. Please like and subscribe/share, thi...

    This show brings back many memories of my childhood living in Holmfirth. I have walked all of the streets, paths, and tracks those three men walked. When we moved to Meltham and then Halifax, I still worked for John Woodheads in Jackson Bridge, and the White Horse Inn was my local at lunchtime. I met all of them as they filmed the episode with the giant carrot outside our church in Crown Bottom car park. No, it wasn't the Methodist Church. There are so many memories. Thanks for posting this video.

    I was in Holmfirth just 2 days ago. The snow was thicker there than here in Wakefield, and, for the first time, we went to see the graves of Bill and Peter. The church was so peaceful and the snow added to that. Lunch at The Wrinkled Stocking (Nora Batty’s house) was fantastic. (Incidentally, at the graveyard were a few plaques on a wall of people with the surname Battye - I might have the spelling wrong, sorry). I wondered if they used it because it was a local name. Good filming work! 👌

    There's a video on here with Fred Dibnah driving his traction engine over the bridge. I lived on the A640 New Hey Rd at Mount when the motorway was being constructed, it was a continuous stream of wagons full of earth going up the road to the dam. We had a strip of garden taken away for subsequent widening of the road to form a dual carriageway.

    I knocked around the Colne Valley as a youngster growing up. Dad worked at Taylor Valves for many years as a machinist. It wasn't until I lived for a time in an earthquake prone country that I realized the benefits of having crappy, dingy towns like this completely flattened by a seven or eight magnitude 'modernizing broom' then to be rebuilt with modern pleasing architecture, wide streets to accommodate all the parked cars, and lots of green parks for the children to play in. Oh well, roll on WW3, Some of those European towns that rose from the ashes are really pretty. Really good drone handling though.

    • @yorkshiredrone
      @yorkshiredrone 2 месяца назад

      @johnvarley3964 thanks mate. Oi I live in Milnsbridge! Ha ha it has it's charms, it's right on the edge of lots of beautiful places, I can see how starting again would improve a lot, the infrastructure of Britain was built for the horse and cart, the railways followed the canal which followed the path of least resistance, bendy, not great for trains, ah well it is what it is and I will stand by, Full of character😁

    • @davidsmith5523
      @davidsmith5523 2 месяца назад

      @yorkshiredrone I find his commrnt saddening. Our industrial heritage snd architecture may be a bit old fashioned but it is a monument to our heritage of quality textile work. The Canal towpath is a really pleasant oasis from the village, right up to Marsden. The village was virtually dead when i was a kid, as was Holmfirth incidentally. Prior to the Summer Wine tourist revitalisation. Now in Milnsbridge there are shops and cafes. Sadly the Midlsnd Bank has gone. Which was a nice building. The building is still there though. The viaduct hoping passed Harold Wilson's old school and the recreation field still exist. Bland buildings may appeal to car users. But character is irreplaceable. In my opinion.

    • @yorkshiredrone
      @yorkshiredrone 2 месяца назад

      @davidsmith5523 absolutely David, I'll stand by the fact our infrastructure is ancient and almost not fit for purpose but I wouldn't have it any other way, Trains don't need to go 250MPH(HS2🤪) there's something beautiful about the old derelict Mills and buildings, the roads are rammed and narrow but we muddle by just fine. The Canal is amazing, whether it's through the countryside or through industrial areas, I live here and it's fine, everything you could possibly need nearby, safe, house prices are extremely modest for a nice terrace, I'm on my back doorstep on the terrace at the beginning doing my Hitchcock cameo.

    • @davidsmith5523
      @davidsmith5523 2 месяца назад

      @yorkshiredrone Also aspiration is fine. To improve. But one man's artwork is another man's carbuncle. Uniformity is the death of individuality. I mean old matket vs new market in town. Plus there was recently talk of DEMOLIDHING HUDDERSGIELD RAILWAY STATION. That would be horrendous in my mind.

    • @yorkshiredrone
      @yorkshiredrone 2 месяца назад

      @davidsmith5523 I think that recent talk is silly rumours, they wouldn't dare touch the station, it'd be like knocking down Victoria Tower. They almost demolished the Piece Hall in the 70s, saved by 1 council vote, gosh.

      @azy78 it's an e-bike so I'm a bit of a fraud. I always feel like one anyway, it's still a workout, just not as much. Did different sections, but the trip to Ashton was from home. Milnsbridge, mainly canal but over the standedge for the tunnel, there and back that day I covered 40 miles but did ride round some areas, , mainly A62 on the return journey. I think Ashton is a good distance away from Manchester(6.6 miles) it has Trams though. I'd say doable as it's largely flatish, maybe 4 hours return..

    Awesome video. Can you remember from which road you re-joined the towpath at 3:07? I want to join this route with towpath from Paddock as getting to Milnsbridge means going down dodgy steep hills for me. Thanks

      Glad you enjoyed it, Still not finished part 2! Nearly... a quick look on the map, it's Stoney Battery Road, curious name for a road, I guess your best bet from paddock is to go via Birkhouse Lane. Enjoy😁

      @@azy78I think there is a path from that road, through some trees, I think.

      Thanks mate, I was banking on the trees way which branches into 3 parts, one with 70 steps leading to upper brow rd which I don't fancy carrying a bike up or down and the other 2 are narrow wet and muddy. Birkhouse leading to stoney battery is better. Really looking forward to full part 2, as I believe it leads to aston under lyne which is quite phenomenal for a path from Hudds.

      @azy78 no worries, yeah I wouldn't fancy that forest😏 on a bike.It does indeed lead to lovely Ashton, cycled it, droned it, I'll edit the bugger one day, spoiler alert, they have steps on the locks over there, pain on a bike. Check out the Standege: Overground, end to end video, bridges the gap from tunnel end to end, real pretty👌

    Great video, must have walked here several hundred times over the last 50+ years, is only 3 miles my house, my dad was a tipper driver in the late 60's when the dam & the motorway was being constructed, I used to go with him in the school holidays, we'd drop material of on the dam wall, wasn't so nice in winter, it's quite bleak up there, but great for fresh air & exercise 😁👍

    Kirklees have WASTED millions of pounds of "our" money and for what?..... precisely NOTHING. This Labour Council is inept, useless and corrupt, hopefully people will have the sense to GET RID when the opportunity arises. Fantastic video even though it infuriates me.

    The only thing that really should be knocked down is Kirklees council’s offices, they are ruining our once lovely Huddersfield town. The Pizza was always a nice part of town, clean friendly and safe and I used to shop in lots of these shops, they were always busy. Kirklees forced everybody out for their hairbrained scheme, I thought they were broke? They have literally killed Huddersfield. I remember going to see the Radio 1 Roadshow from the Piazza when I was a kid, it was packed and we managed to get access to the roof and got a birds eye view! Now there’s going to be nothing there but a grass banking no doubt attracting more drunks and drug users…

    Great footage ❤Hope you weren't on a non legal vehicle on this path.. . Taught to sail here in early 80s by my dad. It's a wild beautiful place and has a place in my heart. The perimeter path wasnt complete then I believe.
