Chrono Trigger: Art & Gameplay Analysis
Let's gooo!
Agreed with most of your points. Only one I disagree with is on the pacing. At a certain point it became verry clear that the developers had decided to stick to the formula of intense gameplay (dungeons or bossfights) and afterwards have a section where combat isnt the focus and the player can relax a bit. Desing wise this was a good choice and most of the times it narratively makes sense. Unfortunately there is 1 major storymoment where this design choice kills immersion pretty much completely. and thats the point where Jill gets captured (and the fact that this alone could mean multiple moments in the story is a completely different issue in itself). Clive gets sent halfway across the continent on a fetchquest that has no guaranteed result while the bad guy in question gets away from the party. From a gameplay perspective it makes perfect sense, otherwise we'd get two pretty intense bossfights back to back, the players need a moment to wind down. but storywise, and characterwise it doesnt fit at all. Other than that point. agreed
Casey didn’t care he didn’t get to take on Shredder. He was happy when he exclaimed “leftovers!”
As a 39 year old man, this was a literal world opening experience for me and forever solidified my love of japanese entertainment and culture. This game has somehow transcended my entire life. There isnt a piece of media i love more than everything about this game. Good lord the nostalgia pierces my essence.
@nicholaslighttv
Facts. Best video game ost ever!
Non sequitur (I added your video to the top of my Playlist) but today I realized that the standard church format bores me. It's so boring that I am sooner inclined to sleep or fidget due to the bombardment of discomfort and ranting. I've come to the conclusion that my most enjoyable moment in church was when I fell asleep during a service as I hadn't slept the previous day. Perhaps much like these turtles I am a mutant for though I have an imperfect zeal and fanaticism sheathed in hypocrisy and paradox I yet believe. Turtles poop string.
I guess in regards to your slight issue with all fathers care about their sons, this was also before a time when culturally speaking society expected that all parents actually cared for their own children, before millennials and Gen Z started calling out what mostly tended to be narcissistic boomer and Gen X parents covering up or excusing their shortcomings instead of owning up to it.
Burying the evil tree debris in Bartz world was a jack hole move. 😐
At about 14 minutes in, I say that the turtles seem white-coded to me. In the years since we recorded this, I’ve come across the videos of Johnsonislovely (www.youtube.com/@johnsonislovely ), who has a whole host of videos on tiktok explaining how that is not the case. His content is awesome and I highly recommend it.
RIP But would have been all for Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) playing Galuf in a live action adaptation.
Did you know Xenoblade 2 Mor Ardain is a homage to Final Fantasy 6 empire with its steam punk aesthetic. Xenoblade series is mix of cyberpunk ,fantasy, steam punk and science fiction.
It sounds cool but I didn't play xenoblade 2 or 3 because I beat the first one and felt underwhelmed. I did buy the second game but I never even played it what are your thoughts on it?
I did not know that and that's really cool!
Terra Branford KHWJ Tv series TV-MA Ocarina of time world journey sagas 0:32 - 2:14
Zeromous and his influence throughout is an allegory for hatred. Which is why Golbeze and Kain fell victim to its influence due to their feelings towards Cecil. They're not Manchurian candidates. They both harbored jealousy towards him to begin with. For Kain, it was harboring unrequited love for Rosa. Golbeze's jealousy is covered in the 3D remake. Really enjoying the podcasts
Kain goes to Mount Ordeals to see if he can go through the same redemption arc that Cecil went through. Because he felt guilt for his many betrayals. The brain washing wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for the fact that Kain was jealous of Cecil this whole time. Golbeze too. And that is contained in this game, but those concepts are further explored in related games like the 3D remake and After Years.
Splinter getting captured by the Foot helped him expedite his Final Lesson for the boys
You guys are serious, Kain apologists. Kain was susceptible to brainwashing due to his jealousy towards Cecil mostly due to his unrequited love for Rosa. We also find in other iterations that Golbeze was susceptible to brainwashing for his jealousy of Cecil albeit for other reasons. Its why Zeromous says he'll always exist as long as their evil in the hearts of man.
You guys keep rapid-firing these out, what a treat. Thank you
You guys left out that Kain was able to be controlled because of his jealousy towards Cecil especially when it comes to Rosa. Hence the namesake
I didnt realize there was controversy about the Moon part. Sci Fi elements date to 1
Game is GOAT
Onion Knight!
So regarding the theft, I’m guessing that’s also part of the ninja training of the young guys working up their ranks in the clan. Part of the issue with the crime wave is that very few people witness or even know they were robbed until after it’s happened. They’re not like the brazen purse snatchers that Raphael and Casey Jones took care of. Heck even April didn’t notice she was missing money. The end goal is to train an army of teens that can move around unnoticed. The thievery and proceeds of it are just incidentals
Love that.
I'm hooked on this series.
Appreciate you!
Nice tribute to Terra. The best character in the entire Final Fantasy franchise and one of the best RPG characters of all time.
So. I am actually a person that played FFXV while seeing all of the content in chronological order minus Episode Ardyn and the book chapters that took place during the game. On Steam, there is a guide that asks you to experience it by watching the trailers, then watching the demo, the playing the short hack and slash where Regis is the main character before actually starting the game. Then play Chapter 1. Then watch Kingslaive and Brotherhood, then play through the chapters, only stopping to play the DLC characters as specific spots. It even asked you to play the MMO add on for a few hours to get context of what is happening during the 10 year time skip, and it asks you to read the book chapters as they are relevant. It sounded complicated, but I listened for the most part until it asked to play the MMO expansion, after that I just beat the game, and you know what, I loved it. While I will say that I probably didn’t need to play and experience the game this way. I did like how I experienced it though, and while there are some issues I have, it did feel complete even without the DLC. The guide did ask the player to leave the room for parts of the Ignis chapter, which was funny, but I still liked it and did see the after credit scene later. Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that FFXV has flaws, but its story is pretty good on its own and the DLC helps add more to the games narrative. My only real honest complaint with XV is the side quests, they really frontload you with them and I would have preferred it if they spread them out better throughout the chapters. I do kinda wish there was more for certain characters like Lunafreya, who I actually liked, and think is more interesting than people and even the game give credit for, and I like the concept of Luna and Noct as a pair, but the execution could have been better. But the novel at least gave us cool stuff with her and her story was excellent in my opinion. Really do wish we got all the alternate ending DLC stuff in action as the concepts shown in the novel really sound like a fun game on its own.
It's a strong 8/10
Very fair criticisms
I'm surprised terra turned out to be kind hearted despite what the empire has done to her, not just her but Celes too.
I honestly feel like the first five levels are a slog. After you hit level five, the game flows a lot more smoothly… Until you reach max level and then there’s still a lot more content, but no more levels. I feel like they should’ve added more levels and made the first five flow more smoothly I really like the game, though, even if level four is some bullshit
As a person who lives in a country where Cricket is massive, even I don’t understand it 😅. Plus the games are so long (Test cricket is played over 5 days at most by the same 2 teams) that they had to make a new format that can be played in 3 and a half hours. The cricket line is what my friends and I quote the most
It's not baldurs gate, its basically just Divinity with BG slapped onto it. No successor to BG2 at all. Took me months before I could get accustomed to it and accept it as this is not BG3 before i could play it
BG3 is a true masterpiece. It sits comfortably in the co-canon of greats such as FF7, TLOU1, Bioshock, ect. That much said, not every masterpiece is for every individual. Some people don't like Vivaldi. You’re entitled not to like BG3👍
Exactly!
I hate FromSoftware games too for their difficulties, but imo Baldurs Gate is much easier compared to Dark Souls or Elden Ring
This is a great series. Keep it up!
Thank you!
This is one of my favorite episodes
My favorite song in ff2 was the pandemonium theme. I feel that it's a major miss that you never mentioned it.
You are 100 percent correct. That's a BAD miss. We recorded this a long time ago and were VERY new at this and I think we felt we needed to rush through and we missed a lot from the first 4 or 5 games before we decided to slow like WAY down. Would be good to come back to these early games sometime.
Are you playing with controller? Because Bg3 feels very different with controller compared to mouse and keyboard. I probably would have not got nearly as invested because you're much more connected to the character you're running around with from my own experience. If you haven't give it a try at least once, you can switch between the two constantly as well with the click of any controller or keyboard-mouse button, even mid-battle^^ Though if you are playing with controller then of course nevermind. Also try doing customized difficulty (there should be a custom mode option for difficulty ever since patch 7) there are various levels of difficulty you can adjust there, from AI intelligence to enemy loadouts and stuff like that. So you can scale the difficulty in various ways. Also bg3 is very difficult even on classic mode so don't worry over the so called "easy mode" since larian has really different scaling of what you'd consider easy. Like divinity original sin 1 beat the heck out of me and baldurs gate 3 classic difficulty still is super hard for me so I customized some aspects to be a bit easier as well.
I can't get into final fantasy. I tried 1, 7, 8, 10 and 13. Those games just aren't for me. Same with dragon quest. I finished crono trigger. Don't know how. Was bored the entire time. I live secret of mana and secret of evermore on the snes.
A SEPARATE RESPECTFUL OPINION?! ON MY INTERNET?! I’M CALLING THE CHURCH!
I love BG3, but I played BG2, Icewind Dale, etc. and love the game style. I can definitely see how micromanaging the combat and the gear could be extremely tedious for people whose interests don't lie in that direction, though.
I'm going to assume it's because the writing for Baldurs Gate wasn't cringe and awkward like it is in Final Fantasy. People die when they're killed lol
You actually don't have to make any assumptions when there's a 30 minute explanation right in front of you.
2 years to late for ppl to give a fuck tbh
And yet, here you are!
Does that really matter? to this day, people still leave reviews on steam, too. Never too late to have an opinion.
More thoughts! Another complaint is, sometimes, it’s not super clear what is “supposed” to be done. For example, my first playthrough. We all get the “go to Moonrise towers” for act 2. Cool cool. But I also know that Ketheric Thorm and the main Big Baddies live there, due to the narrative. And so I avoided going inside too much because I didn’t want to trigger the Act 2 boss fight or endgame inadvertently. But apparently you are supposed to explore the tower and there’s even quests and stuff! Boy did I feel silly when I went to the Shadowfell and ended up triggering the real Act 2 endgame 😂 and yeah the game warns you but I still rolled back a save Or (spoilers) In act 3, the two Big Bads each want you to kill the other. But one of them kidnaps one of your party members! The urgency is there, you need to rescue your buddy! Well thank goodness I read online that engaging either of these Big Bads sets into motion the FREAKING END GAME and that yes you actually can do your side quests. It’s stuff like that that can be unclear to new players
The idea that something is "supposed" to be done is kinda the opposite of their intention. Just try things and see what happens, deal with the consequences of your choices. There is no wrong answers... they all just lead to different outcomes. Thats pretty much the entire game of D&D so to be missing that freedom would mean a poorly made D&D game.
Dude I absolutely adore BG3 it is my new obsession, but as a former Final Fantasy fangirl (only in the classic era), I can agree w you on your points The word I’d mainly use for BG3 is DAUNTING. I have also played D&D but I can’t fathom how a person who has absolutely no clue about D&D wouldn’t be lost. My biggest gripe is also the inventory. I wish there was a less tedious way to figure out who can use that cool thing you picked up Totally relate to feeling like you’ve played for hours but nothing progressed because it is just so PACKED with content Thank goodness for the peak character writing and yes, cutscenes. My dormant FF fan heart is always going to love a character development cutscene
As someone who had no clue about anything DND I’ll say some of it was just overall Video Game Common sense and the rest was looking it up on RUclips. I made it like midway through the game before knowing what half of my stats did. My Wizard had crazy strength. 😂
@ oh for sure video game common sense. Been playing my whole life. But if you don’t know D&D some of the lore might not make sense, and you might be like what’s with the dice? What’s a “saving throw”? The eff you mean I have spell SLOTS, I can’t just cast magic freely? Lol stuff like that
I do wonder if your opinion will change as you progress. I redid things quite much in the beginning, but somewhere half-way through Act 1, things started drawing me in more and more and once I hit Act 2, there was no turning back. Finishing last act, I instantly started a second playthrough.
Yep! Act 1 did not quite sell me, but Act 2 is when the game went from cruising through to locked the fuck in
Let me guess, it wasn't final fantasy!
I love lots of games that aren’t Final Fantasy. Try harder.
@@everythingisfinalfantasy hmm... it wasn't jrpg ? ? ?
hey dude, my bad for any misinterpretation of my comment. I was making a light hearted joke based on your name, and I didn't dislike your video. It wasn't my intent to cause any offense and I apologize if it has.
I mean, if you know the spells of the game, and how to setup combat it aint hard, until honour mode, obviously its dnd, u gotta have a balanced party.
@@everythingisfinalfantasy It clearly wasn't an insult.
It is cool that someone can look back on Gogo and see a non-binary icon. I don't particularly agree with a secret bonus character who has minimal dialogue and mostly exists for their fun mechanics being an icon of anything, but I don't have to agree. Nobody needs my permission to have a good time and this is a fun addition to a fun game.
It's like if everything on the game side was gone with love and care but then the story was handed over to fkn marvel. AND the biggest problem is the @3@ in the name, with it not being a sequel at al. It bothered me so much that I am writing a fanfic that connects the games by force.
It is a sequel though? It directly referenced events from the previous games.
@@pulchrare2 Spin-offs also reference events from the originals. Doesn' t make them sequels
@Urielthalas What does that have to do with anything??
I can empathize with a lot of what you are saying. I played Divinity Original Sin 2 so I had an idea of what I would be getting in to with BG3. I initially started playing last year, I think I played an hour or two and then stopped, I just wasn't ready to make the commitment. I picked it up again a month or two ago and have since completed two playthroughs. My first playthrough was sort of blind, I made a lot of decisions that got a lot of people killed and I felt like I missed out. My second playthrough I was able to keep those people alive and I felt like I got a more "complete" experience. I'm satisfied I played both ways though, as there are different rewards/items for both ways of playing. The thing about these games is there is so much complexity and variables that I simply cannot enjoy them playing 100% blind. I have a second monitor with the wiki pulled up at all times. I'm constantly researching as I play. After learning enough, the difficulty of the game decreases dramatically. So really, in my opinion, it is mostly a matter of game knowledge. There is an argument to be made, and one that I would agree with, that struggling and finding your own way can be rewarding, but there is really only so much struggle that I can personally tolerate. The way I think of it is, I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here, I want to know what works and I want to kick some ass. I think the summary of your video, and something I believe you mentioned or hinted at a few times throughout, is that the game can be a daunting experience. And truthfully, IT IS a daunting experience LOL. It is like life, it isn't all sunshine and rainbows, it is a rollercoaster, there are really high highs and really low lows, you just gotta buckle up and stick through it. In the end, story wise and gameplay wise, it is one of the most satisfying game experiences I've ever had.
Thank you so much for such a well thought out response. Its refreshing in this day and age to see a slightly different opinion presented so respectfully.
