Why Baldur's Gate 3 Didn't Quite Vibe With Me

- Baldur's Gate 3 showcases both the absolute best and surprisingly the absolute worst of exploration-driven, freedom-based game design and while I enjoyed my time with it I do NOT want to see every RPG try to be like this.
Let me guess, it wasn't final fantasy!
I love lots of games that aren’t Final Fantasy. Try harder.
@@everythingisfinalfantasy hmm... it wasn't jrpg ? ? ?
hey dude, my bad for any misinterpretation of my comment. I was making a light hearted joke based on your name, and I didn't dislike your video. It wasn't my intent to cause any offense and I apologize if it has.
I mean, if you know the spells of the game, and how to setup combat it aint hard, until honour mode, obviously its dnd, u gotta have a balanced party.
@@everythingisfinalfantasy It clearly wasn't an insult.
A SEPARATE RESPECTFUL OPINION?! ON MY INTERNET?! I’M CALLING THE CHURCH!
BG3 is a true masterpiece. It sits comfortably in the co-canon of greats such as FF7, TLOU1, Bioshock, ect.
That much said, not every masterpiece is for every individual.
Some people don't like Vivaldi. You’re entitled not to like BG3👍
Exactly!
More thoughts! Another complaint is, sometimes, it’s not super clear what is “supposed” to be done. For example, my first playthrough. We all get the “go to Moonrise towers” for act 2. Cool cool. But I also know that Ketheric Thorm and the main Big Baddies live there, due to the narrative. And so I avoided going inside too much because I didn’t want to trigger the Act 2 boss fight or endgame inadvertently. But apparently you are supposed to explore the tower and there’s even quests and stuff! Boy did I feel silly when I went to the Shadowfell and ended up triggering the real Act 2 endgame 😂 and yeah the game warns you but I still rolled back a save
Or (spoilers)
In act 3, the two Big Bads each want you to kill the other. But one of them kidnaps one of your party members! The urgency is there, you need to rescue your buddy! Well thank goodness I read online that engaging either of these Big Bads sets into motion the FREAKING END GAME and that yes you actually can do your side quests.
It’s stuff like that that can be unclear to new players
The idea that something is "supposed" to be done is kinda the opposite of their intention. Just try things and see what happens, deal with the consequences of your choices. There is no wrong answers... they all just lead to different outcomes.
Thats pretty much the entire game of D&D so to be missing that freedom would mean a poorly made D&D game.
Dude I absolutely adore BG3 it is my new obsession, but as a former Final Fantasy fangirl (only in the classic era), I can agree w you on your points
The word I’d mainly use for BG3 is DAUNTING. I have also played D&D but I can’t fathom how a person who has absolutely no clue about D&D wouldn’t be lost. My biggest gripe is also the inventory. I wish there was a less tedious way to figure out who can use that cool thing you picked up
Totally relate to feeling like you’ve played for hours but nothing progressed because it is just so PACKED with content
Thank goodness for the peak character writing and yes, cutscenes. My dormant FF fan heart is always going to love a character development cutscene
As someone who had no clue about anything DND I’ll say some of it was just overall Video Game Common sense and the rest was looking it up on RUclips.
I made it like midway through the game before knowing what half of my stats did. My Wizard had crazy strength. 😂
@ oh for sure video game common sense. Been playing my whole life. But if you don’t know D&D some of the lore might not make sense, and you might be like what’s with the dice? What’s a “saving throw”? The eff you mean I have spell SLOTS, I can’t just cast magic freely? Lol stuff like that
I can empathize with a lot of what you are saying. I played Divinity Original Sin 2 so I had an idea of what I would be getting in to with BG3. I initially started playing last year, I think I played an hour or two and then stopped, I just wasn't ready to make the commitment. I picked it up again a month or two ago and have since completed two playthroughs. My first playthrough was sort of blind, I made a lot of decisions that got a lot of people killed and I felt like I missed out. My second playthrough I was able to keep those people alive and I felt like I got a more "complete" experience. I'm satisfied I played both ways though, as there are different rewards/items for both ways of playing.
The thing about these games is there is so much complexity and variables that I simply cannot enjoy them playing 100% blind. I have a second monitor with the wiki pulled up at all times. I'm constantly researching as I play. After learning enough, the difficulty of the game decreases dramatically. So really, in my opinion, it is mostly a matter of game knowledge. There is an argument to be made, and one that I would agree with, that struggling and finding your own way can be rewarding, but there is really only so much struggle that I can personally tolerate. The way I think of it is, I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here, I want to know what works and I want to kick some ass.
I think the summary of your video, and something I believe you mentioned or hinted at a few times throughout, is that the game can be a daunting experience. And truthfully, IT IS a daunting experience LOL. It is like life, it isn't all sunshine and rainbows, it is a rollercoaster, there are really high highs and really low lows, you just gotta buckle up and stick through it. In the end, story wise and gameplay wise, it is one of the most satisfying game experiences I've ever had.
Thank you so much for such a well thought out response. Its refreshing in this day and age to see a slightly different opinion presented so respectfully.
I fully agree with the narrative of it all. I think the big picture plot is a little bit clearer once you get to act 3 but it feels so off in the distance I don’t know how to feel about it
Thats kinda the whole point. You start off with small quests and learn the world a bit at a time, slowly revealing the mystery and adventure. These 'random' feeling quests and npcs need to be introduced because it all becomes relevant later.
@ that lack of direction in the first half is still something people cannot vibe with. I’m enjoying the game but fully agree that you go through act 1 and as you play you feel totally lost even when making progress because there’s just no connection to the actual goals the plot lays out for you
I'm going to assume it's because the writing for Baldurs Gate wasn't cringe and awkward like it is in Final Fantasy. People die when they're killed lol
You actually don't have to make any assumptions when there's a 30 minute explanation right in front of you.
I do wonder if your opinion will change as you progress. I redid things quite much in the beginning, but somewhere half-way through Act 1, things started drawing me in more and more and once I hit Act 2, there was no turning back. Finishing last act, I instantly started a second playthrough.
Yep! Act 1 did not quite sell me, but Act 2 is when the game went from cruising through to locked the fuck in
I love BG3, but I played BG2, Icewind Dale, etc. and love the game style. I can definitely see how micromanaging the combat and the gear could be extremely tedious for people whose interests don't lie in that direction, though.
It's not baldurs gate, its basically just Divinity with BG slapped onto it. No successor to BG2 at all. Took me months before I could get accustomed to it and accept it as this is not BG3 before i could play it
I honestly feel like the first five levels are a slog. After you hit level five, the game flows a lot more smoothly… Until you reach max level and then there’s still a lot more content, but no more levels.
I feel like they should’ve added more levels and made the first five flow more smoothly
I really like the game, though, even if level four is some bullshit
I hate FromSoftware games too for their difficulties, but imo Baldurs Gate is much easier compared to Dark Souls or Elden Ring
Are you playing with controller? Because Bg3 feels very different with controller compared to mouse and keyboard. I probably would have not got nearly as invested because you're much more connected to the character you're running around with from my own experience. If you haven't give it a try at least once, you can switch between the two constantly as well with the click of any controller or keyboard-mouse button, even mid-battle^^
Though if you are playing with controller then of course nevermind. Also try doing customized difficulty (there should be a custom mode option for difficulty ever since patch 7) there are various levels of difficulty you can adjust there, from AI intelligence to enemy loadouts and stuff like that. So you can scale the difficulty in various ways.
Also bg3 is very difficult even on classic mode so don't worry over the so called "easy mode" since larian has really different scaling of what you'd consider easy. Like divinity original sin 1 beat the heck out of me and baldurs gate 3 classic difficulty still is super hard for me so I customized some aspects to be a bit easier as well.
Very fair criticisms
I can't get into final fantasy. I tried 1, 7, 8, 10 and 13.
Those games just aren't for me.
Same with dragon quest.
I finished crono trigger. Don't know how. Was bored the entire time.
I live secret of mana and secret of evermore on the snes.
I agree with a lot of your points on the game. It feels like too much so I do end up dropping it and then coming back to it in the future, but overall it's a fantastic experience.
Yeah I should maybe revisit this becuase I did end up putting in about 60 hours. I really enjoyed Act 2. But then early in Act 3 I just wasn't having fun anymore and ultimately dropped it and haven't come back.
It's like if everything on the game side was gone with love and care but then the story was handed over to fkn marvel. AND the biggest problem is the @3@ in the name, with it not being a sequel at al. It bothered me so much that I am writing a fanfic that connects the games by force.
It is a sequel though? It directly referenced events from the previous games.
@@pulchrare2 Spin-offs also reference events from the originals. Doesn' t make them sequels
You're complaining about this on a channel that has Final fantasy in the name...
@@Urielthalas What does that have to do with anything??
@@greyngreyer5 Final Fantasy is a series of numbered games, not one of which is a sequel to any other.
Insightful. Inadvertently philosophical. Entertaining.
🥳
I'm going to give a very controversial take considering the audience of this game. I think the way they handled some of the dialogue and relationships were AWFUL. I haven't played the game in over a year so Idk if they ever patched anything but Gale was so insufferable. The dialogue options are so vague and you think you are being nice to him in a friendly way then you get roped into a gay sex scene and it actually ruined my experience. So immersion breaking and forced.
Another complaint I have? If you talked about this then you were isntantly belittled by the community. There is such an overbearing culture of this type of thing it pushes me away from those types of games. There were a few mods that tried to address the overbearing romancing of Gale and the community was outraged. I actually thought it was a bug or maybe overlooked at first but I don't think so.
My main point I'd like to make is that this game would age so much more gracefully if it stayed away from this type of thing. The community is so hyper-sexualized and cringy. If you visited the reddit forums when this game came out you'd think it was an erotic sex game. It's all anyone talked about. Love seeing people be realistically critical of this game though. Good video.
My equally controversial take: it was a mistake to make every companion bisexual, as in they would get with any gender or race. This was done purely to avoid any outrage or rocking the boat. It would prevent stuff like what you mentioned from happening. It is immersion breaking for a guy like Gale who was sleeping with a literal goddess to suddenly want to pound you in the rear.
they absolutely fixed the fact that romances were overwhelming, I haven't accidentally found one since I initially started playing and after coming back to it, I've actually found it more difficult to pursue relationships in the game. I find it a little funny that you've brought up Gale, simply for the reason that he was one character that I greatly dislike but has become one of my favorites. Part of it also could be that the players know which answers are more likely to be "romance options" and so we're able to avoid them, having them be more overtly romance options may make it better for newer players.
I'm sorry you had that experience in the BG3 community. It sucks when a few rotten apples spoil the bunch. I've never experienced it personally with BG3, but I won't say it doesn't happen, bc I've certainly gotten into situations like it in other game communities. Wish everyone would just calm down and remember that it's just pixels on a screen.
I disagree with your last point though. Including sex and romance doesn't remove the possibility of something aging gracefully. Sex and romance are a huge part of things that DO pass the test of time. You might personally find it cringy, that's fine. But the idea that BG3 will age poorly just bc it includes an option of companionship is a little silly imo
Gale was famously bugged on release causing many uncomfortable situations lol. He has since been fixed and is no longer a pest
2 years to late for ppl to give a fuck tbh
And yet, here you are!
Does that really matter? to this day, people still leave reviews on steam, too. Never too late to have an opinion.
