Belize City was the only place in the world I felt unsafe in broad daylight. Spent a lot of time in Belize years ago and all the local expats were leaving because of high crime, some of it violent. The government wasn't effective keeping offenders in jail.

Sight unseen -- bold move! Years ago, my ex and I found a listing for a house that was newer, larger and nicer than anything else we had seen in our price range. We were very tempted to make an offer sight unseen, before anyone else could snatch it away from us... but we waited and made an appointment to see it. We walked through the house, and guess what... it was every bit as nice as it seemed from the listing! There was just one problem: the neighborhood. The house was one of four big, beautiful recently-built homes in a new cul-de-sac, in what was probably the town's worst neighborhood. This was a "nicest home in the worst neighborhood" situation, which is never desirable in real estate. But, by far, the home's most interesting feature was a master bedroom view of some kind of nearby junk yard, replete with derelict vehicles and a large pile of discarded tires. But, that was just my experience. Your property looks beautiful -- I hope it has worked out very well for you.

We are retired and is financially very secured. We are selling our home, cars etc. Please please tell me where is the best place in Belize for us to live. My husband plays golf, we want to live on the beach, low crime area, english speaking area, not too many crowded people around. We want to purchase a little two bedroom house or condo. Thank you so much for your (apparently - you never know these days) honest videos about Belize. I am retired and currently living in Costa Rica and my lifestyle has been drastically reduced because of the devaluation of the USD compared to the Colone. Also, because Trump was elected president, I will not be moving back to the US for at least 4 more years. There are many things in Costa Rica that make daily life more difficult (the common saying is that "Costa Rica, where we make simple things, difficult"). The issues that you talk about in Belize are the same or worse in Costa Rica. "Slow lifestyle" so that calling the repair man will take days or weeks or never (here it is called Pura Vida) is common in Costa Rica. Another significant difference is that expats here are considered "gringos". That is a derogatory term where locals have a passive-aggressive feeling about non-ticos. Ticos like the money that gringos bring into CR but they resent the economic disparity. This shows up as cashiers being slow or dishonest at local stores. A gringo is always moved to the back of the line for local healthcare. It is very subtle but it is constant. I now know what is like to be a minority in a country and it feels very disrespectful. Of course, there are many kind and respectful people in Costa Rica and I see them every day. But the number of gringo-hating ticos can be overwhelming. Here is an example: I was walking past a beach resort called "Margaritaville" one day and I saw a Tico walk out from his professional position and stand right in front of the path I was walking. He looked at me and saw me walking right toward him. He didn't move. He placed himself right in my walking path. I had to walk around him. That is what he wanted. He wanted to show me that he disrespected me and he asserted his "ticoness" by making the gringo walk around him. I could have punched him in the face to make him move but I knew that I would not have any legal leg to stand on in Costa Rica. As I hope you can see, the prejudice against gringos in Costa Rica is subtle but omnipresent. To anyone thinking of moving to Costa Rica, it will be OK if you have A LOT OF MONEY and have someone local that you can trust. The latter will be the most difficult. It sounds a lot like Belize except there is no devaluation of the dollar. I might be in Belize soon.

Thank you My name is John I'm from the US unfortunately I live in cay caulker now for almost 3 years I love it of all my family is deceased I don't have anyone to go back to or anywhere and notice I have to go either way My only problem is even though I do miss some fast food sometimes that that's not really a problem there's plenty of good food here My only problem is when I got here I could still walk in about a year and a half ago I started having trouble walking in now I'm in the wheelchair I bought a nice three-wheeled scooter it was really expensive it was great and then my battery is melted because it was supposed to shut up but they overcharged it's $550 US to replace them and then I have to wait for them to be delivered and then hope that they're the right batteries so I've been kind of stuck in the house I have a wheelchair but it's a piece of junk but that's a that's my biggest issue so I'm happy here let all the people that want to go back to the US go back goodbye I wouldn't have it any other way thank you sis I'm not wealthy or I would try to buy a house from you

I don’t eat fast food. I love rice, beans & carbs. I live in Mississippi so I never expect people to show up when they say they will bc I know they won’t. I don’t shop at malls. I do shop online so that would be a change but it’s adaptable. Slow is good.

#4. why go to the Jewel and not drink the fine Belizean drinks? Don't waste money on imported drinks, let your hair down and immerse yourself in the local offerings. Regarding Duty free, if you want to take some Belizean rum back home with you, don't wait until you get to the duty free shop at the airport, it costs more in there, than it does at a grocery store.

Yeah this sound like the perfect place actually. Im from a small place called Lafayette, Louisiana and we take it slow. We are definitely about family and we eat alot of carbs and seafood. The only thing we don't have is beaches. Hope to visit Belize someday.
