Why do farmers don't keep this breed? -they have large udders that means they have capacity to produce large amounts of milk -they are highly fertile thus the multiplication rate is higher -they have best frame/appealing looks But it's extinct,that means they have serious shortcomings!!!

Climate

When I was milking Guernseys were my favorite breed. There were several large herds here in Northeastern Ohio. Sadly there are none left.

When I was a child, there were about 1/3 Guernseys in our dairy neighborhood. Now there are none. It is due to the antiquated milk pricing system, rewarding volume over components.

If you choose to raise quail (or any poultry, really) make sure wear a good face mask whenever you're in any closed space with them. Breathing in fibers from feathers while raising quail contributed to the pulmonary fibrosis that killed my mother.

We love our muscovies. Lots of eggs. Too prolific, most hatched by one hen, 23, of which 17 survived. Good mothers, males will kill babies. Quiet, friendly. Good meat.

Pigeons are one more livestock to add. Inexpensive and a minimum amount of work and profitable when marketed right. Squab is a very rich and delicious meat.

Moscovy are very intelligent and can be very broody. I've known a female who hatched 20 some eggs. I've even seen drakes staredown a racoon who thought having duckling was a good idea.

Muscovy ducks are also quiet ducks. About the only time you hear them doing much quacking is when the hens have their babies. They will talk to the ducklings. The males mainly hiss. They are definitely entertaining. We had some and in the winter they would slide down the barn roof and fly off at the bottom. Some also tried to roost on the power lines going to the house. That was fun to watch. They do well in cold weather too. We lived in Minnesota.

I used to have a Chinesse and it's true they "defend" you. When my wife was hanging clothes to dry he was fine with her in the patio until I came down. Then he "attacked" her by biting her in the butt, lol. He also answered and came when I called him by his name. Then we played "boxing" until he would get exited and started biting hard and twisting his head, that was when I called it quits and declare him winner of the "fight".

I had 6 sheep (3 babydoll southdown and 3 shetland), along with a pair of buff geese and a dozen chickens on an acre of pasture. All were easy keepers. The chickens I fed year around, in the winter the geese got grain and sheep got hay. They were rotated through 4 paddocks spring, summer, and fall. I sold lambs for slaughter every fall as well as young geese. Eggs whenever there were extra. Loved it!

Good info and ideas on selecting breed types to give the most meat and efficiency of the gains. What it boils down to as far as breed selection is the environment of your ranch, what type of consumer you are selling to, and personal preference. Hopefully a good rancher will find the breed or crossbreed that fits all three of these criteria and from there create an efficient herd through trait selection.
