Austin Valley Model Railway (N-Gauge)
This Chanel will have updates to my new layout as it undergoes construction. My first layout had to get dismantled in June 2021 as I moved house, so this is the sequel to my first layout which has been in the planning for about 2 years. As well as layout updates I plan to have running session videos once the layout is up and running and possibly loco reviews. In the meantime I have had fun with making temporary dioramas or dioramas in a day as I like to call them. I am always keen to hear your advice and thoughts on every video
Happy Modelling 👍

Nice review and running around your layout. 😊
@@thegrowler-blackwoodngauge thank you glad you enjoyed it 👍🚂
very nice
@@ngaugefouroaksstreetstatio6932 thank you 👍🚂
Hi Nat! I've seen these moulds used a lot and they seem to be very useful and easy to use! They certainly produce very realistic results! I haven't seen anyone add colour pigment to them before, which I thought was a great idea! Hope you don't mind me suggesting that you maybe look into getting a lapel mic / lavalier just to help with the audio quality, and stop it from getting muffled when you hold the camera over its microphone? :) All the best, Ian.
Hello there Ian The woodland scenics moulds are very popular indeed and very simple to use. In hindsight I should have used more pigment but I know now for any future projects. Thanks for you suggestion of a lapel mic I’ll have a look into them,as you say I don’t always realise when I’m covering the mic on my phone when holding. Thanks for watching and your suggestion on a mic 🎙️ Nat🚂👍
Hi Nat - those are the same moulds I use. Only difference is I use woodland scenics, Hydrocal plaster. Dries very quickly ( becomes hot 🔥). I usually "plant" them first and fill in with plaster and then paint using the pigments from Woodland Scenics. They will look good once fixed on your layout. Cheers Euan
Hello there Euan, The woodland scenics moulds are very popular I see. The plaster that I used also dried very quickly but didnt get too hot. Thanks for watching. Nat🚂👍
Good to see the result. The moulds look very realistic Nat and it was good to show both those that worked as you intended and those where you had mixed it thicker. Nonetheless they all came out fine. Stephen
Hello there Stephen I was very pleased with the finished result. And the differing consistency of plaster has given me an idea for a future project. Thanks for watching. Nat🚂👍
good video and nice modelling, what you need is a tripod, that will help you when filming and modelling
Thanks I’ll have a look into that, I have a mini tripod but I think a larger one would be beneficial as you suggested. Thanks for watching. Nat🚂👍
Hi Nat just watched your review of the Dapol A4, so pleased it runs so well for you it looks a really nice loco! It was the two terrible Dapol A4 Union of South Africa that I had from Dapol that pushed me over the edge with N gauge 😢! Layout looks good by the way! Cheers Gary
Good morning Nat! Good review of the new A4! It seems to run very nicely, as it should with all of those pickups! I've had the same loco on pre-order forever, originally at Hattons, and now at Rails, and was hoping it would arrive before Christmas! Hopefully it will turn up soon! I don't like the tender drive shaft linkage either, but I've got my fingers crossed that it won't cause too many problems! All the best, Ian.
@@iansngauge hello there Ian Hopefully yours arrives soon, I assume you preordered the DCC fitted version, I’ve only had one loco drive shaft disconnect a few years ago but I’ve had no problems since. It might impact weather or not I can fit crew to the loco but we shall see. Thanks for watching, Nat🚂👍
Hi Nat, you're making nice progress with the embankments, and I think the shapes you're making with the terrain look really good. I'm having a bit of try-and-fail with landscaping myself at the moment and have switched to using foam, though yet to get the good results that you have!
@@endoorrailway hello there Sorry for the delayed response I’ve been quite busy. At first I wasn’t happy with the hills I got but with practice and persistence they’ve gotten better as they go, I use a saw to cut it down to size and then a craft knife to shape it cutting this layers of. Hope this helps, Thanks for watching, Nat🚂👍
Good evening Nat! More good progress made with the hillsides, but like Euan and Stephen commented, how weird that the papier mache didn't stick to the foam! I'm not sure how even it would have been for the track bed though, so maybe reverting to cork is the best way of doing it? Happy New Year when it comes, and all the best for 2025! Cheers, Ian.
@@iansngaugehello there Ian I’m as surprised as you regarding the papier mache and I think as you say the cork will be a better option. Thanks for watching and a Happy new year to you too Nat🚂👍
Hi Nat - hope you had a good Christmas. Interesting the paper mache didn't stick to the foam. Im not sure I'd have paper mached the track bed myself - I think I'd have gone for the cork on top as you now plan to do. All good fun though 😊. Embankments are still looking good as they start to tie in other aspects of the layout. Cheers Euan
@@thegrowler-blackwoodngauge hello there Euan, I had a great Christmas thanks, I was indeed very confused with the paper mache especially as it worked on the other section but never mind. Thanks for watching, Nat🚂👍
That was very strange that the papier-mâché didn't take Nat. It must have known you were getting too much done. The banking is all coming along well and giving structure to the layout. I suspect you'll be pleased to get it all in place. Happy New Year and hope you have a good New Year's celebration. Stephen
@@Elvenhome hello there Stephen, I do wonder sometimes if my equipment and materials have a mind of their own, they are always hiding(in plain sight)from me 😂. Thanks for watching and a happy new year to you as well. Nat🚂👍
I see that’s grahamfarish N scale !
Hi Nat. I've just placed an order for this model on your recommendation. I can't remember, but will you be delving into the world of DCC? If you are, please make a video of fitting a decoder to this model. Hope you had a great Xmas.
@@PaulSmith-pl7fo hello there Paul, glad you enjoyed the video, I’m sticking dc for now but if I ever change that I’ll make sure to have videos showing the fitting process. Thanks for watching. Nat🚂👍
What an absolute beauty.
@@ngaugefouroaksstreetstatio6932 it’s amazing isn’t it
Good afternoon Nat! What a stunning looking loco, and just look at that amazing crawl when running on DC! As you know, I do comparisons between running on DC / DCC when I chip my locos, and only Sonic's Large Prairie and J50 have come anywhere close to a decent crawl when running on DC! I'm betting it's something to do with the coreless motor technology! I've been looking for a class 47 forever, but I want one in BR Blue, and the only ones I keep seeing for sale are the Minitrix ones! Looking forward to seeing what you review next! All the best, Ian.
Afternoon Ian, the running of this model was incredible as you could see. I too have been wanting a class 47 in br blue and I will still get one if it comes out, I just saw this and instantly needed it, (maybe it was just the white walled wheels😂). Thanks for watching, Nat🚂👍 Ps a clue to the next review 6x11
A nice enough video, but I don't understand why we needed to see/hear the content from your tablet (that didn't relate to the video at all). If you were watching TV when friends come around to visit, it is just common coutertesy to turn down the volume or turn off the TV completely - so why not the tablet?
Hi Nat - nice review. I've yet to find a reliable 47 but the one you have certainly looks to be a good runner. 😊cheers Euan
Hello there Euan, it is indeed a beautiful runner possibly the best in the fleet, hope you find some more reliable locos, thanks for watching, Nat🚂👍
Hi Nat 👋 Great review 👍 keep them coming 🤞 As Michael has said, you can pick up the coach packs from Kernow 🤔 and Prince Henry too 🤭 it might be worth seeing 👀 what they go for in the January sales 😉 Very best wishes for a fantastic Christmas 🎄 🎅 from the Emerald Isle ☘️
Hello there, thanks I have more reviews planned in the near future. I’ll have to keep an eye out for those coach packs. Thanks for watching, Nat🚂👍
When I saw this & its running buddy Prince Henry along with the three royal coach packs A, B & C I jumped on them right away. While the royal trains are not for everyone I have a love for them for my collection. Just need a second 67 to recreate a newer rake.
Hello there, Indeed they are amazing models and those coach packs are tempting, I’ll have to keep a look out for them to see if they go on sale. Thanks for watching, Nat🚂👍
Good morning Nat! You've once again made some excellent progress with your hillside / embankments / banking and all of that carving out of foam is really paying off! I enjoyed the running session, and even at this early stage, you can see that there are going to be some excellent camera angles to shoot through the scenery once it's completed! Keep up the good work! All the best, Ian.
@@iansngauge evening Ian Sorry for the delayed response I’ve been very busy and stressed as the cat has not been well. Thanks I’m really happy with how it’s turning out and I can’t wait to start putting scenery on the hills next year. Thanks for watching. Nat🚂👍
@Nat-AVMR-N-gauge - Sorry to hear that Nat, I hope you get destressed soon, and the cat recovers quickly! Ian
Hi Nat, nice progress mate, I really like the way you’re shaping the embankments and hillsides I think they’re going to look great when you’ve added the grasses and stuff. Enjoyed the running session too, looking forward to more, cheers for now, John
@@exehavenharbour hello there John, I can’t wait till I start getting scenery on the layout, I’m planning on getting the stuff I need for it in the next few months, thanks for watching, Nat 🚂👍
Hi Nat 👋 - seem to be catching up on your video's. The comment left on the previous video at an ungodly hour was as a result of the wind waking me up and couldn't get back to sleep 😅. Well back to this video. You clearly have a picture in your head as to how the scenics are going to look (always a good place to start). I'm liking the way the embankments are being shaped around the overbridge area - should look good and provide a lot of filming angles. The way you're approaching this build is very reminiscent of my early days in building my own layout. Very enjoyable running at the end. As a matter of interest what make are the container wagons?😊 cheers Euan
@@thegrowler-blackwoodngauge hello there Euan. No problem the wind can be very bloody noisy sometimes. The container wagons are fleischmann models they are great and far better than the dapol ones that I have as they have diecast chassis. Thanks for watching, Nat 🚂👍
Hi Nat - some nice new bits of rolling stock picked up. The layout is coming along nicely 😊. Enjoyed the running session - always good to get the trains running on any layout. Cheers Euan
@@thegrowler-blackwoodngauge hello there Euan. Thanks I do love running the trains round. glad you enjoyed the video. Nat 🚂👍
Yet more progress Nat. You plainly have very clear view in your see the results your mind what you are trying to achieve, and we can see it appearing as you work. You've made a lot of progress and it's good see it in the running sessions as the trains move through the world you are creating. Stephen

Hello, sorry to advise you but I wont be viewing your channel again as within 3 minutes of watching I got two very long adverts, as with all the videos I now watch on U Tube, if the contents is full of adverts I will stop watching it, don't mind them at the end of the video but not every 3 minutes, really sorry for this but fed up to the back teeth adverts of which I am not interested in or ever buy, sorry again young sir.
@@stevenwring7317 sorry to hear about that I didn’t think RUclips put advertisements on channels that weren’t monetised, I have no control over RUclipss advertising but I’m sorry about your experience. Nat 🚂👍
@Nat-AVMR-N-gauge Hi Nat, not your fault, your content looked very interesting which makes it even more annoying, U tube put adverts into every video, you have to shut it down through settings, I'm not having a go at you Nat you understand but when you try and watch a couple of N gauge videos which look really good only to get constant adverts the flow just vanishes and I just give up. please forgive my little rant, it was not aimed at you or your content, sorry to give you a bad experience and thanks for your reply!!
Good morning Nat! You showed us some great new arrivals! Those Farish MK1's in Blood and Custard livery are a favourite of mine! I have a small rake that runs rather well, which I think I'll dig out of storage for my next running session! Talking of running sessions, I really enjoyed the one in the video! It's nice to see trains running while the layout is still under construction! You're making some good progress, and it's coming along nicely! All the best, Ian.
Morning Ian Glad you enjoyed the arrivals and the running session thanks for watching, Nat 🚂👍
A nice selection of things on show in this episode Nat. The NEC show was always a good place for me to get things. It's why I started going to both days with one day for buying and one for looking at the layouts (and buying the things I should have bought on the first day). I do agree about mixing the rakes up a little bit in terms of livery. You are not tied to fixing your layout in a particular time, and it does add variety to have the odd coach in the livery just before or after the main body of them. Enjoyed the running session and the updated look forward to seeing progress in the future. Stephen
hello there Stephen glad you enjoyed the video, when I went to MRS last year I had a similar approach buying what I was after on day one then looking at the layouts on the Saturday. thanks for watching. Nat 🚂👍
Good morning Nat! Looks like this new show was well supported! There were some great layouts! I saw Scarlington at GETS a couple of years ago, and was really impressed with it! I got really excited seeing the Peak running on the Rapido stand - I can't wait for them to arrive! It's funny how you hear voices you recognise at these shows isn't it? That's how I bumped into Euan (The Growler) and John at a show once! All the best, Ian.
Hi Ian I thought you would be excited seeing the peak, it was great seeing it go round their layout, it must have been running for at least 2 hours solid, I’m must admit I am getting tempted by them they look very detailed and heavy. Yes it is, when I heard the voice it gave me a feeling like Deja vu. Thanks for watching. Nat🚂👍
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
It does look as if it was a good show Nat and worthy successor to the Warley show. I had decided to travel down for the day on the Saturday, flying down at 7am and catching the train back at 15.30. Unfortunately Storm Bert meant my train back home on Saturday afternoon was cancelled on Friday evening so that put paid to my visit. I expect to resume coming down for the weekend next year and doing both days. Look forward to seeing what you bought in a future video. Stephen
@@Elvenhome it was a really great show, sorry to hear that your transportation was cancelled these storms cause a lot of chaos, I’m hopeing there’s nothing in February as I will be heading back up to Glasgow for MRS. Thanks for watching, Nat🚂👍
Hi Nat! Some good progress there! I like the removable hillside, as I'm going to do something similar at some point! I was very interested in your incline, and was wondering what type of glue you used to stick the cork to it? No problem about the off road parking idea, it was just something that I saw regularly in the 70's and 80's as terraced houses wouldn't normally be built with off road parking! You'd just have to park in the street outside your house, or someone else's - bus drivers weren't given any consideration! Lol! Looking forward to the next update! All the best, Ian.
@@iansngauge hello there Ian The incline is from woodland scenics, I used PVA from Poundland (other stores are available) layered it on quite thick then weighed it down leaving it for 24 hrs to fully dry. Thanks for watching. Nat 🚂👍
@@Nat-AVMR-N-gauge - Thanks Nat! Yeah, I've got the same inclines! They're something I've not tried glueing yet, but Woodland Scenics sells its own type of foam glue so I wondered if that was necessary! I've done lots of glue tests previously, and found that good old PVA sticks most things together well if you give it enough time! Thanks again! Ian
Good to see the progress Nat. The layout is really taking shape and you can see the progress with each video. Stephen

Hi Nat, wow! You’ve been busy there, it really does look like it’s taking shape. I’ll be doing much the same I think🤔 with the removable hillside so I can get to track underneath. I do think that the European models are very good, I have a couple of ferry wagons from DM Toys they are really good with plenty of weight to them and very detailed too. Looking forward to the next update, cheers Nat, John
Hi John It’s going to be a challenge making the hillside removable while keeping it looking like it isn’t. Hopefully with my experimenting it should help you see what not to do with yours😂. I went to The NEC today and was astonished to see some container wagons from Graham farish at £93! so expensive, and the frames looked plastic, I’m so glad I went with the fleischmann ones much better quality. Thanks for watching Nat🚂👍

@@PaulSmith-pl7fo hello there Paul, it was amazing the heritage railway was near Vevey just about 1hr from Geneva. Thanks for watching, Nat 🚂👍
Good morning Nat! Such an interesting mix of trains from steamers through to electric! Beautiful views too! Looks like you really enjoyed your holiday! Cheers, Ian.
That is dedication Nat filming trains on holiday. I fear it is 50 years since I was last in Switzerland. We went by train from Boulogne to Innsbruck for four or so days passing through Switzerland on the way, and then by train again down to Rimini (quite how the Teachers survived taking the 30 or so of us across three countries with passport control at each boarder I don't know). I remember Switzerland being very beautiful on our way through. There is a RUclips channel called Swiss Railway Journeys. A company did a TV series of cab rides on all the major lines in the late 80s early 90s with lots of history of the lines and details of their operation. When the copyright owner retired he'd made enough money from the series and video sets so he uploaded everything to RUclips to watch for free. Stephen
@@Elvenhome hello there Stephen, It’s amazing how time flies, I really enjoyed filming while I was away and it gives me something to watch back and enjoy over time as well as showing the beautiful views and different trains. Hi Stephen. Teachers? The Scots came out in you very early on, didn't it. Switzerland was my first ever foreign holiday. My father drove all the way through France to our base in Interlaken. The most fabulous of holidays. Switzerland has spoiled me for the rest of the world!
You've been busy painting more than just point frogs! I think as these come from Dapol they have some odd-looking colours on them - various bits look quite pink-ish, which isn't what I have in mind as what teak coaches should look like from what I've seen of them on TV. The end result you've got looks much closer to that photo you showed from the SVR. Presumably the ones on the SVR aren't actually dirty? They seem to be showing that Dapol haven't got the colours right. The disassembly you show will be useful for anyone like you who was searching for instructions on how to take these apart 🙂
@@endoorrailway hello there Jonathan The ones on the Severn valley are reasonably clean so it was just that dapol got the colour completely wrong. They use a mixture of pink/light brown with tiny yellow dots to make the wood effect. You get a good view of this on a video by Sam’s trains when he reviews the coaches he bought. Thanks for watching. Nat 🚂👍
Hi Nat, that's a lot of delicate painting you've done! It really makes the track look a lot better though, I think 🙂 If you add new points in the future would electrofrogs plus some insulated track joiners (or unifrogs) be less effort?
@@endoorrailway hello there Jonathan It was both tedious and strangely therapeutic painting those frogs, but I’m glad they’re all done as it makes a big difference. When I was planning the layout I decided to go with insulfrog points as I saw them as not complicated and easy to use, for future projects though I do intend to use electrofrog points. Thanks for watching Nat 🚂👍
Good morning Nat! Thanks for showing us how to take the coaches apart! That will definitely come in handy at some point, I'm sure! The coaches do look a lot better with some of their shine taken away! Just one question... Did you seal them with anything? Cheers, Ian.
Morning Ian Glad you found it useful I didn’t seal them with anything but I was considering a satin varnish to try and replicate the look of the real coaches. Thanks for watching Nat 🚂👍
That's made a lot of difference Nat. Dapol coaches do take a bit of getting apart, but much easier to do than Farish ones in my experience. Good to see them running around the layout. Stephen
Hello there Stephen Yes I agree the dapol coaches are much easier than the Graham Farish ones. Thanks for watching. Nat🚂👍

It is always good to get another part of the layout with some scenery in it. The area around the turntable is coming along nicely Nat. The painted frogs have made quite an improvement to the looks of the track. Very painstaking work but the result show that its worth doing. Always nice to see a Streak running on a layout and all the better to see several. What is the problem with Britannia? On the whole is seemed to behave itself apart from the odd stutter. Stephen
Hello there Stephen, I’m pleased with how that area has deployed, I’ve had a rough plan for that area on SCARM for a year or so but it’s nice to see it on the layout now. The Britannia behaved well in the clips that were in the video, I had to cut out quite a bit and re film several times it would stutter cut out and occasionally stop altogether for no fathomable reason all the pickups have been cleaned as has the track. Thanks for watching. Nat🚂👍
