Welcome to my channel which is all about fishing in New Zealand from my Jetski or Boat, and my journey to master fishing with lures such as Slow Pitch Jigging, Softbaiting, Stickbaiting, and Egi for Squid.
Currently I'm focussing on making Slow Pitch Jigging and Super Light Jigging guides.
Previous guides I've made are for Jet Ski fishing such as how to anchor your ski at the beach, using a sea anchor to slow down the drift speed, what's the best tackle storage for use on the ski, what to wear to stay warm in the winter and much more.

Slow Pitch Jigging and Softbaiting with Ocean's Legacy Rods and Jigs

An incredibly challenging fishing trip where the fish were hard to find and barely feeding, we did hours of heavy slow pitch jiging, regular slow pitch jigging, super light jigging without much result to show for it. Our persistance paid off in the end after moving a few spots and trying softbaiting with our Cloud 9 setups in deep water resulting in a modest haul of snapper to feed the family. ...

SLOW PITCH JIGGING and SPEED JIGGING for KINGFISH at the Mokohinau Islands
does it work for salmon
Are you based in Auckland? Would you be interested in going fishing together?
I’m trying to figure out the jigging business. The biggest problem I seem to have is dealing with the current. There’s always current where I fish and I find it impossible to keep the jig vertical. Does anyone have any pointers for me please?
Dude. Where is your bilge pump?
It didn't have one
@@FishoDavo Always put them in!!!
Yup I agree, will do for next ski
I’m at Raro right now
So lucky!
thanks Davo! doesn't look like there was much in the way of coral, more rocky reef? (never been to the cook islands but have some qantas points and was tossing up there or going back to fiji)
I liked Raro more than Fiji Denarau resort area, the Fiji remote Islands would be very nice I imagine
Awesome video, this was such a great trip!
Thanks for spotting all the cool stuff Bretty
Amazing. Very informative and helpful for our upcoming trip. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching and leaving a nice comment, hope you have an awesome time!
I swear ,no fish on.😂
Awesome video mate also love the voice over
Thanks mate!
Awesome footage. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Michael!
Oooofffff making my raro and Aitutaki vids look sub par now 🤣🤙 awesome video mate so interesting watching someone go to the same place and edit/film a completely different experience eh brilliant stuff and outstanding footage
Cheers bro, I reckon if you make one now it'll be completely different again
@@FishoDavo haha that's true eh!
Incredible footage mate, those eagle rays are crazy!! Can't believe you got so close 😅😐 also those sea scooters are an absolute game changer!! Will definitely hire some when Jinny & I go back. Hard luck about not going fishing tho. You're obviously not as mental as me for taking my own fishing gear when we went land based 😂
I really should of taken some fishing gear, but then do I pack light or heavy, would probably end up packing it all like you 😂. And yeah totally rate the sea scooters, get around so fast and not even tired after an hour in the water. Thanks for watching bro!
@@FishoDavo hahaha I never pack light 🤣💀 yea man great watch
Does salt help the process or will it make the fish too flaky?
From the Philippines here. Very detailed and accurate explanation. Thank you.
Thank you for watching and your kind comment 🙏
Hey bro so there’s many out there idk what they mean , there’s QS UL 12XUL 12XXUL 32XUL what’s the difference on them ? 😭
What does overhead, spin mean?
Overhead is overhead reel, spin is the egg beater style casting reel that sits under the rod
That could have ended bad. Glad youre okay and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching, yeah I was really worried during the whole ordeal
im new to fishing and am about to get my first jigging opportunity. this video really provide me the right exposure, i guess... thanks bro...❤
I’ve gone through a bit of a binge on your channel tonight and have learnt a lot! How can I get in contact with you? It looks like you’re based in Auckland and would love some guidance!
Hey mate cheers for watching, Fishodavo on Instagram if you got that platform
very nice thanks and waiting for next video !
Thanks mate! Next video might be a scenic underwater one
Thank you for giving such a clear and informative SPJ technique tutorial! Really appreciate it!
Thanks for watching and commenting mate
@@FishoDavo I absolutely will my friend! When you have time I’m getting conflicting info when to use a swivel for slow pitch lures in forums I read. I’m trying to perfect my slow pitch technique which you video helped tremendously. Is there certain spj jigs that work better with a swivel? Or all or none? lol sorry for all the questions it just gets a little confusing. Thank you in advance!
@michaeljaworski3221 I find swivel is personal preference, I don't think there's any major issue with using it. For me I use swivel on spin reel SPJ setup to help reduce line twist, and on overhead I don't use swivel but I wouldn't be against it either.
@@FishoDavo thank you for clearing that up for me. I appreciate you taking the time to get back me and thank you for your videos I learned so much from them!!
I wont go out far its not worth the risk
Stay close to shore
Hey bro. What sort of mainline are you using for different set ups?
Hello, braid between PE1.5 to PE4 depending on the area fished
Hey there, i have a question about using a baitcaster for spj. Should i tighten the tension knob or let it be as loose as possible to get the best action in spj? I usually fish at depths of 60-120m using jigs ranging from 80-200g.
that's a pretty stupid design on seadoo
Yeap
@@FishoDavo I would just glue it up with the heaviest duty marine sealant
@rc3443 I think the newer models don't have those hatches anymore. Can't glue it up as the batteries are in that spot and need to open the hatch to charge the batteries
@@FishoDavo rewire it, change battery location, your battery wire is no good anyway, it will rust out since it's been soaked
@rc3443 it's OK I have sold this ski and changed to boat now
What do reckon to be best slow fall jig?
I mostly use Ocean's Legacy, and of that range the Roven falls the slowest
@@FishoDavo nice bro, thanks
Nice and clear teaching. I just bought a set up and a variety of jigs. How deep were you with a 130 gram jig? Are you typically a lefty?
Had that happen on my Honda. Rough conditions trolling made it harder to detect but my ski was gradually sitting deeper into the water. More water in footwells, back sitting lower. Hard to tell when it’s gradual. Unbeknown to me a plain metal cooling system hose clamp under the engine ( all the rest were stainless steel) had finally broke and the hose came off. So as long as that engine was running the hull was filling with water. The hair standing on end feeling that something is wrong but you don’t know what it is. Followed my gut feeling and got back quick as I could breaking all speed limits never taking my hand off the throttle until back at ramp. Pull out on trailer, have quick look under seat and water at top of battery. Took me ages to find the problem. Had to use a mirror eventually to see what was underneath the engine. One rusted broken metal hose clamp hidden under engine. You can imagine my thoughts being a Honda, which I trusted for my first ski. You could hardly set a better trap for your enemies.
Glad you made it back safe, quite the story and yeah we both know that feeling now!
Can we not find a water proof injectable foam like the building foam these days to fill the ski void in the large areas and make her unsinkable ?
Could be a hassle when needing to service the ski
Anything can happen on the water, so always go through a safety checklist before hitting the water, and also after launch, but before departure. If this happened to me, I'd probably be poop-chumming on the ride back.
Yup that's great advice thanks
Hey mate I was looking into the XXUL. I'm a landbased fisho and curious as to what sort of distances you'd be able to cast with the XXUL. Unsure if that aspect of the rod was something you were looking at as this vid is boat based but if you know or can put me in the right direction to suss that'd be appreciated. Tight lines
Hey there, I'm no expert here but can help ask around, what lure weight are you planning to cast, what distance, and size/species of fish? Is it salt or fresh water?
@FishoDavo so was hoping to get something that might suit on the lower end of jig size 1/20 to 1/32 and on the heavier end if I can cast those 7 gram slugs I'd be happy if it cast 10 grams even better but that increase in range at that end might compromise tge lower end. More wanted to fish finesse for whiting, red fin, bream, EP, bass, mullet and even salmon pinkies. I know you can't have everything in a rod but main goal is finessing placcies and also being landbased a rod that'd maximise that casting distance when fishing the light end of things (and honestly I don't know what's par for the course in that sense )
no bilge pump?
No bilge pump
GOOD VIDEO....for Ajing fishing!
Thanks!
What size in that reel would you recommend for yellowtail?
Yellowtail kingfish? Over a reef I would say 4000-5000. Over sand you can play them safely can use 2000-3000
@@FishoDavo for California yellowtail
@@BlobEyeMauri I think we are talking about same fish then
Gannets are the GOAT of birds (along with Chickens, Ducks and Pigeons)
Absolutely
where can i buy the rod protectors? looks comfy.
Most NZ fishing stores stock it now like Hunting & Fishing. Where are you based?
bro brilliant!!!! i learn so much!.
Thanks for watching and commenting bro
can you slow pitch jig with a spinner reel? thanks!
Yup you can, I haven't done it too much with the heavier weights, but with 60-90g I've been practicing spin SPJ
@@FishoDavo thanks for responding! we vertical jigged for tuna but we usually do reef/ bottom fishing. we used a spinner for tuna and going to try a spinner for slow pitch/ snappers! thanks again!
IMHO: If you've had the ski for a while, you should have known there was something off. At that point, you should’ve ridden close to shore and tried to fix it
Knew early enough not to sink I guess
Very cool video friend, Thank you for the video, you have shared your experiences, friends...👍👍
Thanks!
Paihia?
Yup
man that is lucky glad you got hoem safely hope you have upgraded or glued that shut forever
Thanks man, ski's been sold for a year now
Great vid bro, where can you buy that baitcast rod and reel combo from in nz?
Thanks bro! The rod is an Ocean's Legacy Elementus PE1.5, can find it at Hunting & Fishing, Land & Sea, Yeehaa. Reel is a Kohga IC, I don't think NZ stocks it, I brought mine from Japan
@@FishoDavo awesome appreciate the deets, rate ya content too
What slow jig weight would you use for 30-40m depth?
I'd probably use 100-120g for that depth, general rule heavier is fine, as you'd want the line as vertical as possible and lure near the bottom
A flipped PWC won't sink because its hull is designed to float even if it takes on water, stop get off, shut hatch and stop making sunk videos. if you are to scared to get off you should not own a PWC.
If the front buoyancy keeps the ski from sinking its still going to be 70% underwater with the whole back underwater, what happened in this video is much better than that option
The one rear compartment will not sink it 70 % maybe 15% still no big deal get off and close it, stop being a fearmonger.
@TheJoedirt6000 ok
That is crazy. Good on you. If you could swing that, I would put a moisture or water alarm in the back.
Thanks, probably needed a bilge pump
