Tbh I think the mom in the first story did fail her kids a bit. The kids were adults and were definitely being entitled to expect their mom to take care of the ex who left her. That being said watching their sick dad be neglected would have caused immense turmoil in the kids and if I were their mom I would have at least counseled them to seek legal intervention on their father's behalf. The op probably would have come out on top with her kids as I think they just did not know what to do in the face of what must have been a very scary situation for them.
