      1st gen Seville was unibody RWD with 2 subframes front & rear joined together running underneath the entire body with a retrograded leaf-sprung live axle. 2nd gen was body-on-frame FWD. One thing upgraded, the other degraded which was more crucial. Then the loyalists in the 1960s called the mechanically superior Mercedes as inferior. It was all bound to doom one day. It did.

    Wow… working on your car in a carport… It's better than working in a parking lot or on the street but it's still, technically, outdoors. I've been there and done that back in the day, most recently when my fuel pump sprung a leak: ruclips.net/video/OxVu5tDMumw/видео.html Watching you struggle, indeed, reminds me of the first several years I worked on my '74 Chevy Monte Carlo and '68 Cadillac before I ultimately bought a house with an enclosed garage. Like you, I've done my share of improvising and making due with the tools I had. As the years have gone by, I slowly acquired specialty tools here and there, and each time I acquired another one, I asked myself why I didn't get it sooner. It's a little like the Clint Eastwood movie _Grand Torino_ where the Hmong teenager, Thao, asks Walt when he got all the tools in his garage and Walt answers, "I didn't get them all at once, I collected them as I went along." Good on you for your perseverance.

    The one thing that will absolutely shorten the life of an automatic transmission is excess heat resulting in burnt fluid and reduced lubricity. That's why I encourage people to install an RV grade auxiliary transmission cooler. I installed one on my car decades ago and my current transmission has 200K+ miles.

  • @drivingmyoldcar1974
    @drivingmyoldcar1974 Месяц назад

    I agree with @nemoyuno162, you likely have a failed diode in your alternator. It may help you to understand the role of the alternator light. The alternator doesn't have a permanent magnet in it, it uses an electromagnet. There's a sequence of events that happens in the alternator when you start the car. When the ignition switch is moved to the RUN position, it energizes the stationary windings via the alternator light - current is flowing from the ignition switch through the light to the alternator windings. The dash light lights up because the diodes in the alternator only allow current to flow one direction and behave as a closed circuit. The windings need to be energized in order for the alternator to generate electricity. When the alternator spins above ~1000 RPM, it self-energizes and current tries to flow against the diode which it can't since the diode only allows current to flow one-way, thus the light goes out. Your symptoms are consistent with a bad diode. The easy fix is to rebuild or replace the alternator. I suggest you disconnect the alternator charging wire and use a jumper wire to connect it directly to the battery "+" terminal and unplug the 2-wire plug then test for the parasitic draw.

    Just by looking at the video, I think the oil does not look bad at all! It is still red/pink as it should be. At the end of the tube it looks a little brownish, but this is most likely due to the discoloration of the plastic of your tube. However, most important, you must smell the oil. Best, right on the dipstick. If it smells burnt, this may be an evidence that something is not ok with your tranny. Just for you to know, it is normal that you have some sludge in the pan after all the years of use. I wouldn't even wonder if this is still the oil from the factory.

    • @drivingmyoldcar1974
      @drivingmyoldcar1974 Месяц назад

      It's not factory oil. There's a plastic cap in the hole where the dipstick tube goes. When the transmission is installed from the factory, they simply push the dipstick tube into the case, thus pushing the cap into the pan.

    I don't understand why automatic transmission oil pans do not have a drain plug!

    • @drivingmyoldcar1974
      @drivingmyoldcar1974 Месяц назад

      It should be noted that transmission fluid is a hydraulic fluid with lubricating properties. It never gets exposed to any of the environments or materials that engine oil is exposed to. As such, it shouldn't need frequent service like engine oil. Consider you power steering, how often do you replace the fluid? Nevertheless, I replaced the transmission pan with an aftermarket pan that features a drain plug.

    the egg-crate grille has been a continual/constant element for Cadillacs. Possibly I favor the waterfall grill (starting '77) only because either those were the ones that I had or the influence of the Rolls Royce grille. I think the egg-crate makes it look larger. it's a small element, but definitely changes the look. Bottom line I like them both

    If it was that hot ( my formula for celsius to Fahrenheit: actual celsius temp doubled, then add 30), 35 celsius x 2=70+30=100 Fahrenheit I would not have had a clear head myself... and likely could have shorted out battery. Im glad it wasnt worse, I would have expected that to have more severe consequences. I cant focus when im uncomfortable or tired so that wouldn't have been the best day for me to be "wrenching"

    older/classic car clocks almost NEVER remain operable. My '79 had the clock in the radio (like yours does now) and I had that script in the "clock" area, but the '78 elegante' clock did not work either. its great you identified the problem, and would be great as well if it could be fixed!

    This was the greatest design Cadillac ever had. A luxurious, medium sized car that had the flavor of a Rolls Royce at a somewhat decent price. They should NEVER have changed it, but kept refining it like RR has done over the years. Even a RR today still has the bones and heritage of the originals, yet is modern and stylish, but of course very expensive to say the least. I never owned this body style, only Eldorado's and Sedan De Ville's. Wouldn't mind owning one of these now!

    After my engine manifold got flooded with gasoline when trying to start the car after 2½ years - thank God it did not start and there was no fire, cause I did not notice it immediately - I need to do the job as well. Some questions: - What did you spray through the injectors to clean them? I would go with carb cleaner to spray through and maybe the the noozle soak in some injector cleaner fuel additive. At least that's what I have here right now ... - How much Ohms should the injectors read? 0,25? - Can the injectors take damage when applying 12V constantly? - What's positive/negative on the injector pins? - Any other hints or tips? :) Greetings from Köln!

    I walked away (of course I will re-watch video carefully) but I thought there was a "white" wire that was not part of the general wiring harness that signaled the antenna. Later I will explain why I think that is the case (as the source of my belief is weird) if your research came up with a different result I would not argue. However if my faint happens to be correct it might help you narrow down your search.
