SALTWATER FISHING ST. AUGUSTINE - Kayak Fishing (Redfish)
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.11 месяцев назад
My original plans were to take the Carolina Skiff out to the jetties today, but as luck would have it the starter battery was dead. My fishing time is always very limited and I wanted to fish, so I called an audible, backed the boat back in the garage, loaded up the kayak and off to Pelicer Creek I went.

Returning from a day offshore fishing and trying to beat a storm to the boat ramp, St Augustine Inlet was a bit sporty. This afforded a great opportunity to give you guys this short 5 min video showing my little Carolina Skiff 162 JLS in some sporty conditions for a boat this size. I turn the camera on myself at the end of the video so you can see if I stayed dry.

epic adventure!
Extend state water to 50 miles offshore and let the states manage the fishery. Federal tyranny must end.
Nice work captain. I respect what you’re doing and actually love it. But I have to be another voice of reason and recommend that you not go solo. I fish out of your same port and go up to 70 miles out. Your health and be taken at any second and you could be out of commission. I just had my 3rd back surgery and I was feeling the best of my life right before I felt the worst of my life in a split second. All the circumstances can change can before you can even react and your precautions are null and void. I would hate to loose a valuable member of our community. Get a partner, when I heal up I will be your partner. Nice fishing, I have been burned using spinning gear bottom fishing and switched to conventional style reels. Again brother I’m not knocking you all. Don’t want to hear about anything bad happening to such an awesome guy and member of the community. Stay blessed, tight lines! 🙏
Hi Mike, Thank you for the kind words and your concern. I really do appreciate it. Send me a message on Instagram when you heal up. Maybe we can schedule a trip. Tight lines 🎣
For January up north, nice couple honey holes. Great fishing captain. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, I appreciate it 👍
Yup. Got to stay close to the rocks coming out of there. Dead low tide will get ya. How deep were you?
Yes sir. I figured that out the hard way...lol. I ended up fishing in 160' Tight lines 🎣
Spotfin Hogfish.
This guy is clueless as to how to use a rod and reel. Doesnt pump, cranks against outgoing line. 🤦🏼♂️
I really appreciate your expert opinion. Despite my not meeting your standards of how to use a rod and reel, I manage to catch fish every now and then...lol. Your contribution is appreciated. BTW... I know reeling against the drag is not how it's done ideally. I believe I might have even mentioned that in the video but I was trying for a more steady retrieve because the pause that happens when pumping is usually when a shark eats the fish in my experience. There are different options on this. So, it's not that I am clueless it's I am using a different method to get by the sharks. But again, thank you for your input. Tight lines 🎣
Maybe, but he's fishing and I'm stuck at home watching him catch fish.
Alamaco usually shorter and wider for there size.
Thank you 👍
Spanish hog.
Thank you 👍
trying to get ambition to go off fishing but seems like everything is small. too small to be worth it
Love your determination-I'm in NE Fl also. Glad to see you with the PFD this time. I was worried about you on the last trip. stay safe so you can make some more videos-tight lines
Hi, and thank you. I had my PFD on under my foul weather jacket. I always wear it when I am fishing solo. 👍. Tight lines 🎣
That's a lot of work for a solo fisherman. Glad you caught some and had a good day.
Hi Oz, Yeah, it's a lot of work before, during and after...lol. but it's worth it 😁👍. Tight lines 🎣
You should let people know in video what precautions you have taken to safely fish by yourself. You don’t want to encourage inexperienced people to try without safety’s in place. 👍
Thank you for your commitment. Yes, I have had several people message me about that. I listed my safety measures in the responses to those individual messages on here but I agree that it would be a good idea to actually make a video detailing my safety measures. I appreciate your feedback. Thank you. Tight lines 🎣
Great video. You plan on going out this Sunday the 26th? I make similar trips in my 24ft but on the fence about this weekends forecast.
Hi Matthew, Yes, I have been keeping an eye on the forecast as well. Of course it looks like next week while I will be at work is shaping up 🤷
Enjoy watching your videos. What size Pen reel are you using on that bent butt rod?
Hi Nick, Thanks! It is an Penn 80 wide. Tight lines 🎣
You fall overboard and this video becomes your final moments bro.
I am wearing a kill switch FOB, I am wearing a self inflating PFD under my foul weather jacket and the sea temperature is 73° at the spot I am fishing. I simply swim back to my boat and climb in from the dive ladder and change into my dry set of clothes that are in my dry bag in the center console.
@ remote kill switch? I saw nothing tethered
@flbizowner9384 it is wireless. Mercury Smart Craft single engine kit remote FOB
@ glad you are taking necessary precautions.
@@NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing I am glad you are wearing a cutoff, I was getting ready to comment till I read this.... Please be careful, single person fishing is no joke offshore...FYI boats can move quick in current and wind even without power.. Good video,,
Great job. Too cold for us to start fishing offshore.
Did you keep the cuda
Yes sir! That is about as big as I will keep. Barracuda is delicious 😋
By yourself, in the winter, single engine, no life jacket on, leaving the helm with the engine in gear. About as stupid as you can get, wake up, this checks all the boxes on how people die offshore.
Everyone has an opinion and you are certainly entitled to yours although I could do without the condescending arrogance attached to it. In addressing your "concerns", I was indeed fishing by myself. A single engine is not unsafe. I maintain mine properly and carry Boat US towing insurance in the event I have a mechanical breakdown. There are countless single screw trawlers that cross oceans and single engine aircraft flying the skys every day . I am wearing a self inflatable PFD under my foul weather jacket. Go back through my videos. You will see I wear my PFD whenever I fish alone. I am also wearing a Mercury safety FOB which kills the engine in the event I were to fall overboard. I have an EPIRB, registered MMSI number VHS and a Garmin In-Reach. I utilize several different weather sources when planning my trip and do not go out in conditions that I am not comfortable in or feel my vessel isn't capable of handling. I also have radar to monitor any changes in weather while on the water. I leave a float plan with my wife and check in regularly via my In-Reach. While no one can anticipate everything that can happen out on the water, nothing worthwhile in life is without risk. I feel I have "checked as many boxes" as I can think of to mitigate the risk involved in doing something I truly love to do. Thank you for watching my channel Tight lines 🎣
Your justification of what you are doing does not mean it is safe, because it is not.
I justified nothing. I listed what safety measures I take when I am on the water, which I would argue are more extensive than 99% of boaters on the water. Aside from not fishing by myself, I am curious what you would do differently. Would you hunt alone? Would you fly a single engine aircraft? Would you drive alone in the winter through the mountains? All of those activities involve risk but there are steps you can take to mitigate the risk involved. I am not suggesting anyone emulate what I do. I am just a guy who likes to fish and creates videos for others to hopefully enjoy. If you feel unsafe or unsure leaving the dock single handed by all means you shouldn't do it. Everyone has a different comfort level whether it is on the water or participating in other activities. I hope we can just agree to disagree on the subject and I appreciate your watching my video.
It sounds to me like this guy has covered about all of the safety bases he can. I think he shut safety boy up about as well as you can. I'm in middleburg and fish offshore a bit. If I was going to fish alone offshore I would have the exact same equipment.
You're a foolish man making foolish decisions. Good luck as you're going to need it.
While I respect your opinion, it is uninformed. I probably take more safety measures than 90% of other fishermen on the water. Nothing worthwhile in life is without risk. I have taken measures to mitigate that risk and enjoy something I truly love. (Please see other comments where I have gone into detail as to what those are) Thank you for watching my channel. Tight lines 🎣
@@NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Forty plus years of offshore fishing out of practically every port from N.C. to Venice L.A. has informed me well. I won't argue your decisions but will offer a piece of advice. If you're going to solo fish that far from shore, especially in winter, always wear a lifeline firmly attached to the boat. If you fall over you'll be dead of hypothermia long before anyone knows you are missing. Tight lines
I wear a Mercury safety FOB that disables the engine in the event I fall overboard. I am wearing a self inflatable PFD under my foul weather jacket. I have an EPIRB and VHS with a registered MMSI number. I check in regularly with my wife via my Garmin In-Reach and leave her with a float plan. If I break down I carry Boat US Gold Tow Insurance. I monitor my radar for changing weather conditions. Aside from my fishing alone, I probably take far more safety measures than 90% of the fisherman on the water. I do appreciate your perspective though. Tight lines 🎣
Very brave going out that far on a single engine, I don’t think I’d be brave enough to do that!😂
Hi, thank you for watching 🙂 I know this is common thinking among the offshore fishing community. There are countless single engine trawlers that literally cross oceans, as well as single screw commercial fishing boats. Today's 4 stroke motors are extremely reliable when properly maintained and if it is a fuel issue, it doesn't matter how many engines there are. I keep Towboat US Gold towing insurance, an EPIRB, Garmin In-Reach, MMSI number registered to my VHF. I also check in with my wife regularly via my In-Reach. While you can't prepare for everything, I try to check as many boxes as I can. Tight lines 🎣
The only spot that I ever stopped and fished that was 40 miles out of St Augustine is the old drydock. If the fish are there you'll hit 5he right away otherwise head 35 more miles out to the ledge. Be safe and wear a pfd with a personal locator and 2 bottles of water in your pockets. Shit happens fast.
I agree 💯! I wear my pfd while under way, I have an EPIRB, Garmin In-Reach, MMSI number registered to my VHF' SOS function, Tow Boat US Gold Tow Insurance and always have a cooler full of water. I leave a float plan with my wife and check in via my Garmin In-Reach regularly. I also pull my weather forecasts from multiple sources. While it's impossible to prepare for everything mother nature can throw at you on the water, I try to check as many boxes as I can think of.
The red fish with the yellow tail is a large Cuban hogfish
Thanks... I always like it when I catch a new species 👍
For being by yourself you did outstanding.
Thank you John I appreciate it. Tight lines 🎣
Well done man! Look forward to getting back out👍🏼
Are you on any other social media?
@victorcortez1155 I am on Instagram @northfloridasaltwaterfishing.
@ Lol I was already following you!
Spanish Hogfish. Very tasty, no size limit but I believe they are considered an ornamental reef fish so you’d have to keep it alive to “put in an aquarium”. You’d have to look into regs to confirm.
Thanks! 👍 Either way, it is always cool catching a new species. Tight lines 🎣
Enjoyed this, wondering what the seas were going to be once you got out there. Looks like you did your homework. Looking forward to more vids once this crappy weather moves through!!!
@robertlittle8672 Thank you 👍. Yeah, the weather the next several days looks horrible. I find myself checking the marine forecast 50 times a day hoping something changes..lol. Tight lines 🎣
Nice work! Be safe out there.
Love the channel. I’ve been watching for about year now…ever since we decided to move to Jacksonville. Now that I’m down here I’d be happy to help out on a trip. I’m retired and have lots of time, experience and equipment. Also have 266 commander sea fox set up very similar to yours. Good luck, fair sea and calm winds!
Hi, and thank you! We can definitely work that out. We just need for mother nature to bring it down a notch...lol. Let's keep an eye on the weather and see if we can get it and our schedules to match up and go fishing. You can contact me directly on Instagram @northfloridasaltwaterfishing. Tight Lines
you just need to stay close to those rocks during low tide but you are correct, it is no joke and even worse in the dark
Thanks!, yeah I discovered that when I came in. Of course it was again low tide..lol. I found the very narrow channel of deeper water very near the rocks. It barely over a boat width wide. 👍 Tight lines 🎣
That is an Almaco - pointy dorsal that is long
@offshorehunting23 Thanks again, I tossed him back because I wasn't sure. I figured better safe than sorry.
I think that was a spotfin hogfish
@offshorehunting23 always cool to catch a new species
Love it . Keep that determination and dedication. I am here to boost your algorithm
Man i thought NJ was a bad ride to deep water. 50 miles for triggers. I thought our 100 plus mile runs for tuna were bad 😆. People think I'm nuts because i run most days 30 to 40 in my 17ft. Like you im not hammering the throttle. I find the most comfortable speed and just take my time
Yeah, I pick my days and maybe leave the ramp a little earlier but I can make the trip at a third of the cost in fuel and don't need a diesel tow vehicle. My 2020 Ford Ranger pulls my boat great . You just have to watch the weather, have all your safety gear and exercise good old common sense 👍. Tight lines 🎣
@NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing I'm moving up to a 19 Hydra Sport this season and I got Frontier so I know exactly what you mean. People think I'm really nuts because 99% of my trips I leave before midnight. I can jig squid super easy up here. Or I can drop sabikis tipped with fish bites for live northern kingfish on the inlet shoals. They are incredible kite baits. Stay alive great and I've gotten tons of bluefin, bomb mahi (for NJ), some 50lbs plus wahoo and the best is mako or threshers. The way they will chase is nuts. New boat I have every intention of running to the shelf in(80ish miles). I'm putting a 150 yammy on it along with a kicker bracket. Boat holds 85 in main and I got my 25gal reserve. This season hasn't even ended yet, had 4 giant bluefin Fri after Xmas all only about 9 miles out
That is awesome!! Very cool. Catch em up! Tight lines 🎣
I think the shark population is getting out of control. You can't fish anywhere without the sharks showing up and taking more than half of what you hook into, if you're lucky.
Totally agree! Between the red snapper and sharks it can get extremely frustrating. Thanks to over reaching unelected bureaucrats. I will digress before I get on a rant ..lol Tight lines 🎣
Great video buddy! Subbed supporting us North East guys on RUclips!
Thanks buddy! I have been a fan and sub of your channel for a while. Hopefully see you out on the water soon Tight lines 🎣
Sorry if this is a duplicate… thanks for the video! What was air temp that day and what bait were the trigger hitting?
The air temp was in the 40's in the morning then got into the 50's mid-day. The triggers were biting squid and cut cigar minnows.
Do you fish out of cape Canaveral as well?
I have not fished out of Canaveral yet but I do plan to, especially if the weather conditions in that area are fishable when it's not up here. The run offshore isn't near as far either. It will probably balance out with drive time. Tight lines 🎣
Thanks for the video! Waiting for a weather window for first trip of 2025 here. What was the air temp and what bait was the trigger hitting for you?
@@NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing thanks for the reply. why is it so far out to the fishing grounds? are you targeting specific wrecks? i thought the gulf stream a few miles off the beach. thanks
The Gulf steam off St Augustine varies depending on conditions but is normally 50-60 miles offshore.
Good video man! I go offshore in a 21 footer off of Destin, just curious what depth do you hit when you’re 50 miles out?
Thanks, I really appreciate it! I was in about 160' of water. I went out to the ledge (about 60 miles) and came back in to find some different bottom.
New Sub. Great job captain. Beautiful boat.
Nice video. While filling boat diesel went from 3.42 to 3.52...yikes
I noticed that too when I was editing..lol
Looked like a good time.
It was a lot like a workout trying to get by the sharks and triggers are not a glamorous fish but I ended up with a bag full of good eating fish.
My favorite brother
Why ban the civilians when the Comercial fisherman get to do it it's all about the money 💰 and it's bull manure
Is pretty hard to enforce something that nobody is going to abide by. I wanna keep Fishing and they can’t control federal waters only state waters and if it’s a federal thing, they can’t control state waters.
Actually it's the federal government (agencies) that are the problem. State laws, at least in Florida state waters are at least reasonable. What they are doing in the Gulf is a good example.
Thanks.
This doesn't come as a surprise the ocean has been raped for years every time I see a picture of a charter boat with piles and piles of fish laying all over the place at the dock you know it was only a matter of time and every time you say something in the comments about that they cock and attitude with you
If we all ignore the ban what they going to do
i am considering getting this same skiff, now this helps seeing how it handled the spray and conditions! Thanks for sharing
Everything in our country is based on money, that is a fact. I can’t see who would benefit from this unless it is something we can’t see or don’t know. Of course it could be just a big mistake. Who really knows how many red snapper there are. Fishermen say that the snapper have overtaken, of course that is in the spots where they fish, lots of artificial reefs. Researchers say they are declining. Why are there discrepancies at all? My guess is the researchers have more information of the broader picture that they believe to be factual. The fishermen know for a fact that the red snapper is overpopulated on there spots. I don’t think bottom fishing will get shut down. I don’t see how it would be political in anyway, as there is no money to be made in this regulation. Both sides probably are correct
much better sir!
Thank you!
You are ready once again to slay some giants! Happy Holidays.
