This channel will document my attempt at cycling the length of the Americas, from Prudhoe Bay to Ushuaia. I will be recording and editing on the road, so apologies for my infrequent upload schedule.
Bikepacking Chile | Episode 17 | Alaska to Argentina
Cycle touring through Chile was everything I hoped it would be. Gone were the endless, open stretches of sun, sand, and scrub. While some days were hot, there was always some amount of shade to take cover in. And the best part? Water. Water everywhere. Everything from liny creeks burbling through rocks, giant regional rivers, massive lakes, and the ocean itself can be found in Chile.
I started off with a quick, three day visit to the coast, which was full of vacationing Chileans enjoying the cool sea breeze almost as much as I was. Much of the coast is developed, but there were enough deserted spots for me to wild camp on.

Argentina's Red Desert | Episode 16 | Alaska to Argentina
Просмотров 6 тыс.21 день назад
From San Pedro de Atacama, I headed back up into the Pampa to the border with Argentina. In an attempt to avoid the harsh desert of northern Chile, I decided to instead ride Argentina's iconic route 40. The 40 is a famous highway in Argentina, stretching from the northern border of the country all the way down to Patagonia. I followed it over high mountain passes, through lush river valleys, an...
Bolivia is Like Another World | Episode 15 | Alaska to Argentina

The transition from Peru to Bolivia was striking. From steep, craggy peaks, deep valleys, and rushing rivers, to wide open plains, lakes, and sand. I rode by the legendary Lake Titicaca, and the capitol, La Paz, with it's unique teleferico system. The highlight of Bolivia may have been the crossing of the salt flats. I had never been in an environment that was anything like them. It was like be...
Peru Great Divide: The Crux of the Andes | Episode 14 | Alaska to Argentina
Просмотров 5 тыс.2 месяца назад
The Peru Great Divide will be my final long-distance bikepacking route, and, perhaps, the most spectacular. The route traverses remote dirt roads across high passes and through remote villages deep in the Andes Mountains. Honestly, I was looking forward to this part of the ride more than almost any other part. I love riding in the mountains. The roads can be difficult at times, the roads are ro...
Northern Peru: The Highs and the Lows | Episode 13 | Alaska to Argentina

For the first time ever, this episode, I got to ride with a fellow Alaska to Argentina cyclist for the whole episode. Together we rode from Cuenca, Ecuador, across the border into Peru. The roads were a mix of paved highways, unpaved country roads, and unpaved highways. We climbed up the high elevation paramo, and down to the arid lowlands. The goal was to get to Huaraz, Peru as quickly as poss...
Alaska to Argentina | Episode 12 | Trans Ecuador Mountain Bike Route
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.5 месяцев назад
The Trans Ecuador Mountain Bike Route is a ride I had been looking forward to since I started planning my Alaska to Argentina Ride. The Andes have always fascinated me. It is the longest mountain range in the world and the second highest. As I entered Ecuador, I got to ride among some amazing volcanic mountain chains, which included not only stunning snow-capped peaks, but also canyons, ridges,...
Alaska to Argentina | Episode 11 | Colombia

Before getting to South America, I had to cross the infamous Daren Gap. I obviously wasn't going to try to ride my bike through the thick, cartel infested jungle, so instead I opted to take a series of local speed boats along the coast of Panama, skirting the jungle and all of its dangers. Once I landed in Colombia, I immediately headed up into the Andes Mountain Range. Soon, the heat started t...

Finally, the end of Central America! In this episode, my dad joins me for a wet and hilly rode through central Costa Rica. Over the course of a five days we see toucans, volcanoes, and lakes, as well as rain storms and sweltering heat. It's always great when my dad accompanies me, I finally have someone who can fully apricate the trials and tribulations that are inherent in a Central American t...
Alaska to Argentina | Episode 9 | El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua

From Guatemala, I headed down into the low-lying coastal highways. I was finally able to increase my speed and crank through three small Central American countries. The heat was still a factor, but the seasons were changing. The end of the dry season didn't mean the end of the heat, but it did mean more clouds, which did help some. It also meant I had to deal with the rain. There were many thin...
Alaska to Argentina | Episode 8 | The Highlands of Guatemala

The heat really started to get to me this episode. From Oaxaca, I climbed over the mountains that marked the end of the Central Mexican Highlands and descended into the lowlands. As always, the lower the elevation, the hotter the temperatures. Low elevation doesn't necessarily mean flat either. I continued on the Trans-Mexico Sur route until San Cristobal de las Casas where I left it and headed...
Alaska to Argentina | Episode 7 | The Mountains of Mexico (Trans-Mexico Norte)

The transition from Baja California to mainland Mexico was almost like entering a new country. The long, flat, mostly empty stretches of sand and open desert were replaced with giant mountains and hundreds of cities and towns. I felt like I had entered "true" Mexico. For my route, I decided to follow the Trans-Mexico Norte. I liked the idea of visiting little known parts of Mexico while staying...
Alaska to Argentina | Episode 6 | The Baja Divide

The Baja Divide is a mostly off road cycling route through the backcountry of rural Baja California, Mexico. It starts in San Diego and runs a circuitous route through the length of the peninsula. I was initially hesitant to commit to attempting this route since my bicycle touring setup is not what most people recommend for this route. My gear is heavier and my tires are narrower than what most...
One Day on the Baja Divide

This video is a sample of a typical day on the Baja Divide. It takes place on December 17th on a section between Bahía de los Ángeles and Vizcaíno. I tried to document the feeling of one complete day riding the Divide, from the moment I wake up in the morning before dawn, to when I go to bed at around 5:30 in the afternoon thanks the lack of daylight hours in the winter. I had no idea what to e...
Alaska to Argentina | Episode 5 | Entering the Sonoran Desert - GDMBR (Part 3)

In this video I finish out the Great Divide Mountain Biking Route. The farther south I rode, the more scarce the trees became until they were only found on top of the highest mountain ranges. Below, the environment became much more alien (to me). Harsh sun, lack of shade and water, and abundant thorns made for a challenging ride. The biggest change, for me, was probably the lack of other riders...
My Alaska to Argentina Gear Overview

In this video I go over everything I carry with me on my Alaska to Argentina bike tour as well as my baggage setup and some of the reasoning behind my choices. Next I am heading to Mexico and the Baja Divi...

Awesome scenery! Can't wait for Carretera Austral with your padre and for future trips.
Really appreciate the audio text to the series. Pause to learn new words and places. I know I've seen that tree in a yard up in northern BC, or very similar. I thought maybe the you would deke back onto ARG 40 to the rest of the way south. I suspect you made the right call. Did not expect all the water and green that far inland. Not to long ago Chile had a real bad rap and fascist military regimes. Democracy is better for business in the long term. Never heard of the finisher route we'll seen as the end for you. Great series. Genuine stuff , thanks.
Alex, you are so blessed to see all these beautiful places! Have a great time with your father!
Ahhhh ❤
blackberries?? Def bonus for visiting.
Love it when your Dad joins you! Looking forward to the next episode.
A year ago I started following several cyclists on RUclips who were doing Alaska to Argentina roughly at the same time. I only stuck with this journey. The others I left in Alaska. Even the super annoying soundtrack could not distract me from this amazing journey.
Another great update Alex, as always its so much fun seeing your videos pop up. I have always wondered, but not wanting to take away from this trip, what's next? This achievement is so grand take it in and enjoy every memory of it. Its wonderful that your dad is able to join you over a few sections, I'm very very envious. Look forward to the next one, whenever it come out. Cheers Bob...
Dude let me buy u a new bike plz u will enjoy riding so much more u need a better bike
He rode all the way across the America's, and did pretty well. This trip is almost at the end but you should definitely sponsor him a bike for next journey!!
What a beautiful journey by bike you have experienced. Have nice views a long the way. Warm greetings from The Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
thanks Alex, shredded pants, new socks, Volcanos, epic!, great stuff
wow, I was getting bit emotional just thinking about the end coming. not sure if you're relieved, it's probably more of a mix of emotions. It's been amazing following along, can't wait for the last two episodes. This has been an enormous amount of effort in posting and cycling, hard to imagine everything you accomplished. plenty of time to think about this down the road but I would love to see an overall recap film of your journey, and once all the dust settles put something out. maybe some highlights, or whatever suits you. No matter what thanks for putting these out there, I always look forward to checking out the journey, reminds me of the good old days.
That story about the guy watching your bike took a 180, was thinking you were going to come out to him stealing your bike and instead he gave you some socks, that's hilarious because it's such a random thing to give a stranger 🤣🤣😂
The guy watching your bike and giving you free socks was so wholesome 🥹 Your route through Chile is gorgeous!
Excellent video thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience
Absolutely amazing, thank you again for sharing!
I would really appreciate a video or information on how you manage your money, transfer money and pay for things when outside of the usa... Please. I love your choice of route, and much respect on what you've accomplished so far! Also, your filming and editing are impressive. Thank You for sharing your adventure.
15 years ago I waited almost whole day on the exit of San Pedro, trying to hitchhike to Argentina through Paso de Jama. I did not have luck, and since I already had an exit stamp, I took a buss to Salta on the next day. That was one of the two busses which I had to take during 4 months hitchhiking the length of Argentina and Chile.
Brilliant mate I'm following you ... planning to do this ride as well .. how was the route 40 busy or light traffic?
Thanks! The amount of traffic varied a lot. In the north, when it was unpaved, there were almost no cars, near Mendoza, it was very busy.
Great videos!! I got my 11 year old daughter hooked on your videos. She watched all of them before I could :) I'm trying to get her and her brother excited to ride the Great Divide Route one day.
Nice! The Great Divide is an awesome route! Such a great community of other riders and hikers you meet along the way, and also awesome support from the locals who set up trail magic.
So glad to see you still rolling! Will keep following and wishing you happy travels.
would love to see a cost breakdown when you finish! ❤
There seems to be a prototypical 'man against nature' theme, quite distinct from the Pollyanna principle of modern travel.
Lol, I had to look up the Pollyana principle. I try to be as honest as possible with my my depiction of bike touring. This episode I definitely felt like nature was out to get me at some points.
@@Crankingit I can relate the labour of cycling as I did a lot of tree climbing to cut the branches over houses, and folk would claim how great and fun it is (Pollyanna principle at work), which it is as an observer, but its really hard and requires focus that I too tried to convey with little success.
Grate video to watch, you got some stamina!
Thanks for sharing your journey with us, the descripción of the landscape, experience, feelings, make one feel is there, beautiful videos.New subscriber, Be blessed furthermore
Excellent video thank you for sharing
I know Brazil is out of the route, but if you decide to crank a bit along here, I live in the south, really close to Argentina. You can stay at my home to rest and recharge!
Hey, thanks for the offer. Unfortunately, I'm already back in Chile, heading south.
(Forgive this question if the answer is right in front of me!) Do you have a GPX of the route you did in Chile and Argentina? I'd like to resume a trip, but this time starting in Arequipa, Peru , or La Paz, Bolivia... and connect with your route. I had no idea Route 40 'wasn't' a busy highway... it looked like a great road to ride on. Thx for your series, and hope you do others... Go Seahawks.
Hey, no problem, the GPS of the entire ride is one of the perks of the Patreon. Basically, I crossed into Chile at Paso Hito Cajon, rode down to San Pedro de Atacama, then rode back up, passed Hito Cajon to where I entered Argentina at Paso de Jama. From there, it's not far to the intersection with route 40, which is unpaved until San Carlos. The only deviation from the 40 started near San Jose de Jáchal, through Rodeo, then along the 149 through Barreal to Uspallata, then back down to the 40. The 40 is mostly low traffic, but there are definitely places, especially outside of Mendoza, where it feels like a freeway but with no shoulder. Enjoy the ride, and be prepared for relentless wind and sun.
you think maybe putting that rear rack top bag horizontally across the two bags would take stress off the hub? On my USA tour I was breaking spokes till I did that. Never had a problem with my wheels after I did that. Awesome video!
Interesting. Either way, the bag sits on the rack and the rack on the hub. I seems like it would make it harder to access my panniers without moving the bag. Oddly enough, my spokes are about the only part of my bike that hasn't broken yet 🤞.
Thank you again for sharing your adventure with us. So just curious... why aren't you wearing your sunglasses again!?! ;-) Cheers ~Ron & Petra
You know, I ask myself the same thing. 14 months without losing a pair, and then in 2 months I lose 4 pairs. Makes no sense. At least I know I won't be losing a 5th.
Welcome to chile
That scenery man....that would set on me on fire.
thanks Alex, I got thirsty just watching this, great stuff
Lol, I drank a lot of warm water on this section.
Great video ,chapeau.
Said well when you talked about hitchhiking, people's kindness, and restoring faith in humanity. Feel the same after seeing all the hospitality of people to bike packers on this and other channels I watch. Can't wait to see Patagonia!
People talk a lot about "bad people" to watch out for, but there are so many more kind people. I haven't met any bad people so far!
My admiration to you!!
God bless you, you're one of the luckiest man in the world !
Thank you for making the effort of sharing your journey!
Hey Alex, you're just about there. I looking forward to the rest of your journey. What size are your rear panniers bags?
Yeah! I'm pretty stoked to get down south! The panniers are the biggest Ortliebs I could find, I think 40 liters.
A helmet with a detachable visors for various conditions would increase of quality of lived travel experience in high glare and dust conditions. The issue is what to simulate from historical modernism when documenting a mega travel project which in this case seems to be classic modern gritty iconic anti consumerist approach to travel which pulls off nicely with the intimate narrative structure and videography.
If my visor detached, I'm sure I would lose it, too. I'm glad you're enjoying the content.
@ Some come clipped to hitch on the helmet so you wouldn’t need worry about it. But then the narrative would be solved which is bad.
Your video was truly beautiful and inspiring. As a fellow creator, I appreciate the effort you put into it. Sub and 👍73
Thank you! Making videos is a lot of work, but I think I would miss it if I stopped.
my day is suddenly better with this upload ! You tell a nice story. The cliffhanger in #15.... 40Km downhill ride..... the return visit. Argentina 40 route is a beast.
Thank you, I appreciate it. I would have liked to tell the story of getting a rude up that hill, but if I had to choose, I'm glad I got a ride where I did, at the end of the episode.
Adding comment.. BuYah!!! Can't wait to keep watching!!
🎉
Love your work, looking forward to seeing you in the Southern region.
Thank you, I'm really glad to be finally out of the desert!
Loving this epic trip!!!! Thank you
Loving the llamas 🦙
lookin pretty rough bud, but its genuine, youre bloody crankin it!- from wpg
Another great update, thanks for posting. The Andes look truly amazing! Bob...
Thanks! It was really sweet seeing them from that angle, looking up at them from the east instead of being amongst them.
Amazing cranks Alex. I would be very cranky by now. Are Puma a concern along your route?
Well, I'm feeling pretty good to he out of the desert! I haven't really worried about pumas. I would be quite excited to see one!
