Killbear Provincial Park - This Could Be Ontario's Best Park
Просмотров 6 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Killbear is one of Ontario's most popular Provincial Parks - and many would argue it is also Ontario's BEST park. Killbear has 7 different campgrounds (Kilcoursie, Beaver Dams, Georgian, Harold's Point, Granite Saddle, Blind Bay and Lighthouse) with 880 sites. And while it’s a wonderful natural setting to simply relax in, there’s also lots to do. There are 5 trails to hike including our favorit...
Dealing With a Bent Axle, Replacing Tires and Not All Lug Nuts are Created the Same
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.Год назад
At the end of the 2023 camping season we inspected our trailer and discovered something unusual. The passenger-side tire on the front axle was wearing much quicker than the other 3 and it was also wearing the outside edge, and when we measured the distance from the front tire sidewall to the trailer frame and the rear sidewall - we found they were 1/8 of an inch different. This indicated the ti...

RVing to Alaska & Yukon Ep. 1 - Planning and Preparation (Keys to a Successful Roadtrip)
Soceity just gets less formal and more " who cares ". When I was a young child, in the 60's, I travelled with my family every weekend on the train to visit GrandMother. My Father worked for the Canadian National Railway, so the whole family could travel anywhere in Canada for free ...it was called " dead heading". My Mother would dress me for the train ride ... black shoes, black socks, black dress pants, white shirt buttoned to the top, with a black tie on at all times. I was given a haircut every second or third weekend. At the age of 10, I was trained by my Mother exactly how to eat in the dining car, when to talk, when to not talk, excuse yourself from the table if you had to leave, etc. One day I was being noisey as the Conductor was going down the aisle checking everyone's tickets and my Mother said to me " Behave yourself, the Conductor is almost here" ... I said why should I worry about what the Conductor see Mother? .... she said ... " Because that Conductor is your Godfather" ... small world.
Great story….thank you for sharing!
Not too far from Ottawa, I think the park itself is about 100 years old? Mazinaw Rock is the big draw of course since it seems kind of incongruous with the surrounding area. Very nice Ontario woods, water, and rocks.
It is kind of incongruous….well put.

❤ BEAUTIFUL PEACE ❤BEAUTIFUL LOVE ❤BEAUTIFUL NATURE ❤BEAUTIFUL CANADA
These videos are the very best of their kind. All great pertinent info and good music.
Thanks very much Robert, that is genuinely appreciated!
Beautiful, thanks for sharing. What month was this trip please? We're looking at RV'ing over there next spring (May), and hope it's perfect ice berg time. :--))
Thanks very much! We were in the St Lunaire area with the icebergs June 5-9. Hope that helps!
We recently found your channel as we're planning a trip to NL in the near future. You have wonderful content; we find you very informative and easy to listen to. Wondering what you found as regards boil water advisories in NL? From what we can gather they're pretty frequent and widespread. We want to have a good water filtration system in place so we can avoid boiling water all the time, and not be forever feeling like we need to sanitize our fresh-water tank. We plan to do some boondocking and are hoping you have some input on the many places one can apparently dry camp. We're going to have to find ourselves a good map (or app) of available potable water supply/dump stations for sure! We've also enjoyed your Ontario Parks videos so far and hope you'll be posting more of them! One issue seems to be poor cell reception in ON parks. I know there are those who say we should just be enjoying nature, but many people need to be connected for a variety of reasons. Wondering if this is an issue for you. Thanks for the great videos, and looking forward to the next!
BlueSky, thanks so much for your very kind feedback. We are genuinely happy that you find the series helpful! With regards to boil water advisories, yes, there were quite a few. We did have to flush the tank once when the water developed a brownish colour and used bottled water for drinking for the entire trip except in St Johns. Not all cgs have dump stations so we tried to limit water use and use showers in the cgs - 2 examples were the cgs we stayed in in Elliston (near Bonavista) and Dildo - Bonavista did have a dump station at the Ultramar gas station in town - $5 charge. Cell service is also spotty in much of the province, particularly the western half and we even found that Sirius satellite radio cut out a lot (you are pretty far north). As for boondocking, Newfoundland was very friendly towards it, unlike most of Canada (Yukon and Northern BC being the other exceptions we have found). We loved boondocking in Crow Head (Twillingate) and at Point Amour. There were also some beautiful spots near Trinity and Bonavista but we chose not to boondock there because the weather was not really conducive. We will say, camping in NFLD is very reasonable. Averaging 20-40 bucks CDN a night. I dont have our records with me as I write this but I think the most we paid was $55/night in St John's. Our last episode in the series will have a break down of our our costs....Hope all this helps...and have an amazing adventure in Nfld next year!!
@@TrueNorthCamping Thank you for your reply! We appreciate your taking the time and all the information! We like to be prepared and to travel as safely & trouble-free as possible, so we appreciate the attention to detail & extra steps you folks seem to take to preempt issues before they can arise. I especially identified with your leaving lots of time to get to the ferry...that would definitely be us! We just got back into trailer camping after a 5-year hiatus and enjoyed ON parks this past summer. We hope to go to NL next summer or 2026. Maybe we'll run into you at an ON park next year! Thanks again! P.S. Your dog is adorable🥰.
@@TrueNorthCamping Forgot to ask, sorry, but did you find most potable water fill stations had threaded ends on their fill hose? We're considering a 3-stage water filtration system and we'll need to be able to thread our filter's hose onto the water source. Thanks for any information you have on this!
@@bluesky1028-w8d hi, most did have a threaded bib….but we recommend keeping a water bandit on board…it might be able to help you use your filter to fill your tank if you encounter a tap with no threads. Hope this helps.
@@TrueNorthCamping Thanks for the quick reply. Good to hear most are threaded. My husband just ordered a water bandit today, so we should be good. All the best; we're looking forward to the next video!
I was told that touristy places don’t open until July, but that doesn’t seem true since you are there May/June.
There were a few places slow to open but we found most (especially historic sites) opened in early June.
We’ll be there next summer. We’re planning 2 weeks in Gros Morne, do you think that’s too long?
It probably would be too long for us…we were there a total of 5 nights and certainly didn’t see everything but we did get a real appreciation of the park. There were a couple of hikes that we missed and would like to have taken that we could have squeezed into a couple more days - so taht would be a week….but hey, thats just us…everyone has different interests and desires! Hope that helps! Have an amazing trip!!!
What a perfect day to tour Brook Pond.
Because we were there in very early June, before it got really busy, we were able to watch the forecast and pick what was supposed to be the best weather day, and just book it a couple days in advance.
@@TrueNorthCamping smart!!!
What a magnificent sunset!
Thank you Tracy, it really was. Some people might not believe it but we did not boost or enhance the colour s - thats the real footage - it really was the most beautiful sunset we’ve ever seen.
Great info! 😊
Glad it was helpful!
New subbie from Alberta, 🇨🇦. Great video! Where do you live? How long were you in NL?
Welcome! Thanks for subscribing! The entire trip was 9.5 weeks. We were in Newfoundland from May 31 to July 17 - 48 days.
We didn't get to Labrador on our Newfoundland trip in the past. We will be sure to make the trip on our upcoming trip to the Rock next summer. Loved the inter-provincial background music changes!😅 Thanks for putting this together, enjoying the series!
Thanks so much Simon, glad you’re enjoying it! Hope you have a great trip back to Nfld!!
@TrueNorthCamping side note....we found your channel because my wife plays pickleball with your daughter. Your daughter was a great advocate for your channel! 😆
Thats awesome! Thanks Simon!
Seems to just get better and better!
We absolutely loved it there. We aren’t always in a hurry to go back to the same place but both of us look forward to going back to Nfld.
Great video, very enjoyable, looking forward to rest of the series. I thought my Cairn Terrier was cute, Ranger is like a poster for the perfect face.
Thanks very much! And yes, we think Ranger is pretty special too… but we’re a little biased 😉
The snow will soon be flying over on the rock! One marvelous island!! Continue the amazing adventuring!!
Thanks! We have 9 more videos planned in the series- hope you enjoy them!
Good morning. Love your channel. Wondering if you would do a video ever on unique places to visit in Canada. We live in Wisconsin, been to 4 Candian providences, but will be back. It's hard to find all the cool places without a local helping.
I"m assuming that Ranger stays in the camper while ya'll are out at various places, eg. the hot springs? We will be traveling with a 5 lb maltese and appreciate any advice about traveling with pets. Muchas Gracias from Texas!! Great videos by the way.
Hi Stex, let me start by saying Ranger is a wonderful traveller and if we do have to leave him in the trailer we know he wont destroy anything and he wont bark and disturb the neighbours. So our biggest concern when leaving him was to ensure he wouldn’t get hot - so we always left the AC set to come on in case the trailer got warm, but honestly with our Alaska trip, I don’t think it ever did, simply because the outside temperature never really got up there. One thing we are thinking of doing is installing a new combination door lock so that if something happened while we were out (e.g. we get delayed) we could contact the campground and hopefully have someone check on him. And of course if you have internet (starlink etc), you can install a camera or monitor that would let you check in remotely or get an alarm if it got to hot. Hope this helps - have an amazing adventure!
@@TrueNorthCampingthank you so much. Enjoying your adventures!
We camped at Killbear over Thanksgiving weekend. The person camping on our site the night before we arrived didn’t leave the site until 2:20pm. I had to inform him of the checkout time and ask him to leave. Dog owners regularly used the main beaches as their personal off leash dog park and let their dogs piss and shit on the beach. One ignorant family let their dog freely roam the entire lookout trail. We all thought the dog was lost or the owner had been injured and released their dog to attract help. They got belligerent with us when we asked them to keep their dog on its leash. We try to avoid Ontario Parks campgrounds whenever we can.
Killbear is such an incredible park…I hope these inconsiderate acts by our fellow campers doesn’t keep you from enjoying the park in the future.
100% agree with the impact gun noise. I don’t currently own, or will o ever own an impact gun to use on our travel trailer.

Your filming and editing is getting better and better! We are enjoying your series as we plan to go next summer. What time of year were these episodes filmed? Is mid June too late?
Thank you Vivian. We left our home May 22. Our ferry to Newfoundland was May 31. We arrived in Gros Morne June 1 and in St Lunaire on the Great Northern Peninsula on June 5 and were there 4 nights. Hope this helps.
Interesting how they seem to have tweaked the dates of first landing there because in 1991 they were quoting the year 990 for leaf Erickson. They seem to like that nice round thousand years ago number I don't know if carbon dating has got so precise that they can dial in 30 year difference or not but I think that's kind of funny.
The scene at 12 minutes 18 seconds in the video is exactly what I remember nothing more no walkways no statues no "meeting of two worlds"
Wow, that plaque says August 2, 1991. I visited that site in June 1991 and I don't remember any visitor center or any of those pathways only have that extensive infrastructure that looks like it was all there after I visited just remember some sod mounds replicating what was discovered in 1960
I think it's hilarious that she finally references the movie "the Christmas story" when she's going to put her tongue on that piece of ice when the obvious reference for me was when she put on the survival suit and then she's like the kids little brother that can't hardly move after the mom dresses him up to go outside in the snow
Thanks Nicj, that gave Cindy a genuine laugh…”I cant put my arms down!”
Oh, I also hiked to the top of Gross morne .. it was June had a beautiful sunny day with waterfalls coming off and still snow
Sounds amazing!
I am from Oregon and I was living in Idaho in 1991 when I made a road trip to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in my VW van with my cat and I went all the way up to the northern tip where you guys went to L' Anse aux Meadows and I would pull chunks of ice out of the ocean to use in my icebox in my van for refrigeration and I did a little bit of "tallying" on small floating iceberg next to the shore, and I found out what Tucker Moore was .. I spent the summer on Cape Breton Island near Mabou great video!
Sounds like an amazing adventure!
Last year I watched your trip to Alaska, it was great. I see you have a new truck for this adventure. I would also like to go to Newfoundland and Labrador. In 2015 we took our 5th wheel to the Cabot Trail and stayed in the same campground as you. It was a great holiday. We arrived in the rain after driving through some road construction with large potholes. In the morning I woke to find my trailer on an angle. I thought the trailer had sunk in the ground due to the rain but found out I had 2 flat tires on the trailer. The tire shop informed me I had broken belts in both tires and they were unfixable. The day before I had a blowout just before the NB/NS border and damaged the side of my 5th wheel.
Thanks Chris! Re Nfld….we highly recommend it. We loved every minute of the trip. It can be foggy, windy or cool…or all 3 at the same time 😉, but so worth it. The scenery in the small coastal communities is amazing and the people so friendly. When we were waiting for the ferry to take us back to the mainland Cindy decided she didn’t want to leave😁 ….we will def be going back….and it was much more affordable than Alaska, even with the ferry costs. Episode 4 should be out soon. And as for your adventure on the Cabot Trail…wow! Just glad they didn’t go while you were underway and do even more damage.
What an amazing sunset!! We visited there in 2008 and are planning on returning next summer. Thanks for the info, its helping us plan where to visit next time around 😊.
Glad it was helpful! Have an amazing adventure!!
Beautiful sunset! I have seen a few vides of Gros Morne and it does look fabulous. Thanks for being real! Really appreciated your videos last year. Too bad you were not able to explore much of Jasper. My favorite place, I am so sad at all of the damage. We live near Edmonton, so we go a few times a year.
Thanks Michelle! We are hoping to get back to Alberta and BC in 2026. We really are looking forward to exploring that area, especially Jasper!
Views are very nice. It seems so cold. May would be to early for me. Also seems very hard to get there. I Watched past videos. I live in MO. USA. Vacations this year have had lots of drama. Person has to do things to go on vacation, get up early. miss sleep getting somewhere late. Fighting crowds and drama with that and boats are bit much. We got left by the boat, no return. Had get small plane to catch big plane. $$$ about 700, extra weight of bags was 165 of that, over 200 for room for the night few hours. The flight in small plane was very nice through and since they stay low you get see a lot.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Ranger is a cutie.
Thanks so much territ, we’re glad you enjoyed it. And yes, Ranger is an amazing dog! We genuinely feel blessed hes part of our family.
Please don't believe them ...Killbear is ONE of the Worst Provincial Parks I ve ever been too!! Rough Geogian Bay ...cramped camp sites...Rattlesnake s . These people are only trying to distract you from FAR nicer parks ! The Pinerys for example..do yourself a big favor and stay away 😢😢
The only thing “these people” are trying to do is share their honest opinions based on decades of experience with fellow campers. But hey, we agree with you, the Pinery is a lovely campground.
Another great trip coming. I love it when I see you stop at things I've been too. We traveled in 2019 from Wisconsin to Cape Breton for the Celtic Colours Festival. We drove across from Sault Ste Marie. We stopped in Montreal, Moncton NB, went to Hopewell Rocks St Park, but missed Alma. I'll have to go back for fresh rolls! We toured Sydney, and we missed out on the Cabot Trail due to a very windy and stormy day. Looking forward to the rest of this adventure.
Thanks very much Jeff. The Celtic Colours Fest sounds awesome!
Thanks so much. We want to visit Newfoundland with our RV sometime. I was another travel vlogger and I could swear they said it was $1000+ one way. They only had a 24' class C, and I know fares are based on length, but I haven't checked it out too much, since we aren't coming for a couple of years. But now I can move that timeline up!. Looking forward to this series since I liked your trip to Alaska so much. Also your visits to Provincial parks. I want to tour Canada as well
Hi Jeff, I'm glad the pricing info was helpful. I do know that sailings to Argentia, near St John's, are approximately double the price so that might explain why the other vlogger reported what they did. You can go on Marine Atlantic's website and get the actual price for you and your rig and crew. For us, arriving and departing from Port aux Basque (PaB) made the most sense for our trip planning and of course there are many more sailings (2 per day) to/from PaB vs only 3 per week to Argentia. Thanks so much for watching!
Glad to see you're on another multi-episode adventure. I had watched Ep.2 before this one. Will continue to follow, and appreciate your letting us tag along!
You are making me quite jealous of your trip adventures! I'll follow along and enjoy the ride.
Thanks so much Jim…and you are most welcome to tag along!
FYI guys that new Ferry and all the marine Atlantic ferries are the biggest in North America. And the new one is huge and is a "green ferry", uses hydrogen, electric and diesel for fuel. Doing our best. Can't wait to follow your visit.
Thanks Candy! We absolutely LOVED Newfoundland. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
Newfoundlander here and you are spot on the ferry. Been using it my whole life and it is what it is. We are an island.
Thanks Candy…that means a lot coming from someone with as much personal experience with the ferries as you ! Hope you enjoy the rest of the series.
I took that ferry some years back but did the night crossing.- the ride was rough due to bad seas.
Love it ❤
Thanks Micaela!
I've watched this twice now and I wish I could give you another thumbs up.
That’s awesome Jack! Thank you!
Ranger is looking good!!!!!
Thanks Ellen. He’s such a great traveler. We are blessed to have him.
Well done, thank you!✌️
Thanks Steve!
Love your videos- best ones out there. Glad I’ve found you. Thank you for your very informative park info - keep them coming. ❤️
Thanks so much Cheryl, thats pretty high praise! We’re really glad you’re enjoying our videos. We’re currently working on a new series on RVing to Newfoundland…hope you enjoy them too!
Glad to see the two of you (and Ranger) setting off on a new adventure. I’ve always enjoyed your videos.
Thanks so much terri!
🎉 ❤
We have a similar setup, Ram half ton and smaller travel trailer and I’ve been getting 7.5-8.5 mpg. I used to be in the 10’s. Any way nice setup. Enjoy the trip.
Thanks very much! Hope you enjoy the series.
