Wainwright's Coast To Coast: Part 1 - Shropshire Hill Walks
Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk is a 197 mile (317 km) long distance path from St Bees (the western-most tip of Cumbria) to Robin Hoods's Bay in North Yorkshire.
Devised by Alfred Wainwright, it was 'published' in 1973, but (surprisingly) only become a 'official' National Trail in 2022.
The highest point on the trail is Kidsty Pike, 780 m (2,560 ft). The longest day was the 20+ mile trudge of relatively wet but flat ground from Shap to Kirkby Stephen (pronounced Kurby... the second K is silent). There were eight of us, and on a couple of occasions the group split to do alternative sections. Any questions, please put them in the comments...
Enjoy!

The Breiddens are three prominent hills in Powys, just beyond the border of Shropshire. Some know only the name Rodney's Pillar when they describe them. Part of Middletown Hill (Bulthy Hill) is actually in Shropshire. They form a very easily recognized landmark between Shrewsbury and Welshpool and are visible for miles around. Moel Y Golfa (403m) is the tallest, the trail is well signposted, bu...

Offa's Dyke is the old border between England and Wales. There is a national (long distance) path, all 177 miles of it, going to/from Chepstow at the southern end to Prestatyn at the northern end. My friends and I did this walk in TWO separate sections. The southern half (Chepstow to Brompton) was done in April 2022. The northern half, Brompton to Prestatyn ,(this film) was done in April 2023. ...

Clee Burf (510m) is the lower peak of the two hills that make up the Brown Clee Hill with the taller peak being Abdon Burf (540m). It's the 5th highest hill in Shropshire, and I recommend the approach from Cockshutford, Clee St. Margaret, SY7 9DY. The lower section is Clee Liberty Common. There is an impressive iron age hillfort to explore, called Nordy Bank, as well as disused mines that used ...

It says on the OS map that there's a cave on the side of Black Rhadley hill. But I know from experience that finding caves isn't easy, and it took two attempts to find it. When I did, I discovered that the entrance is fenced off, and there's warning signs. I was so curious.. I could see the hole, and shining a torch didn't reveal anything. How big is it? How deep is it? The only thing I could s...

Sir Edward Elgar is renowned as England’s greatest composer, and it was the magnificent landscape around The Malverns that inspired so much of his music. Whether you’re a classical music fan or you just like to see the spectacular scenery that is The Malvern Hills, this film is for you, set to two of Elgar's greatest compositions.. Nimrod is the 9th (and best) of Elgar's 14 'Variations'. The be...

Walking the full length of the Malverns (end-to-end) is an achievable ambition for many hill walkers. This video will make you appreciate the scale of the challenge and after watching it a couple of times you will have the visualisation and mindset to begin studying an OS Explorer #190 map in detail. Once you reach British Camp, the task of following the ridge-line becomes easy, but between Cha...

Worcestershire Beacon (425m) is Worcestershire's County Top. It's incredibly popular, and for good reason, as it commands the landscape and has superb 360 degree views. This walk starts at The Wyche Cutting and ends just north of Sugarloaf Hill. It includes Summer Hill and Sugarloaf Hill. A couple of drone shots were incorporated into this film, but the drone took off and landed from outside of...

The most northern end of The Malverns consists of 3 hills, Table Hill (373m), North Hill (397m) and End Hill (329m). A couple of drone shots were incorporated into this film, but the drone took off and landed from outside of the land controlled by The Malvern Hill Conservators, and at all times complied with CAA requirements.

North of British Camp there is an unbroken run of four hills that need to be walked as one. Black Hill (308m), Pinnacle Hill (357m), Jubilee Hill (327m) & Perseverance Hill (325m). This takes us from British Camp car park to The Wyche Cutting. A couple of drone shots were incorporated into this film, but the drone took off and landed from outside of the land controlled by The Malvern Hill Conse...

Millennium Hill (327m) and Herefordshire Beacon (338m) are most definitely the 'honeypot' of the Malvern Hills. The iron age hill fort that encircles both these hills is called 'British Camp', it was constructed in the 2nd century BC and abandoned in ~48AD once the Romans had shown them to be ineffective, the same point that Midsummmer hill fort was abandoned also. Most people reach British Cam...

Many people choose to walk these two from Swinyard car park (Castlemorton Common, Gullet Road, Malvern HR8 1EU) as you can form a lovely loop that can includes 'The Gullet' quarry/reservoir as well as walking over to the Obelisk Monument in ...

Midsummer Hill (284m) is the 3rd major hill as I travel northwards along The Malverns, I skirt close to Hollybush Hill (242m), which is in the wooded hill, but I don't class it as a major hill as it has just a 5-10m drop between it and Midsummer Hill. The hillfort on top has prominent ditches and ramparts, and these have a small southerly extension that go around Hollybush Hill also, in thereby...

As a hill-walking addict from Shropshire, I see my fair share of hillforts, and they certainly add to the character of a hill. The Welsh Marches have lots of hillforts (when compared to other parts of the UK) and I'd like to share the 10 best that Shropshire has to offer. At the end, I provide a small insight into when hillforts were 'the thing' and the reason they were popular isn't really to ...
