Dead in Trespasses and Sins: Total Depravity Reconsidered Pt. 2

What Does "Bought" Mean in 2 Peter 2:1? Limited Atonement Reconsidered

Today I go through 2 Peter 2:1. A vexing verse for the Calvinist view of Limited Atonement and Perseverance of the Saints. I reference Matt Perman's article from desiringgod.org (www.desiringgod.org/articles/does-2-peter-2-1-deny-effectual-atonement). Tune in and you decide? Atonement for all? Appointed to Eternal Life? (Unconditional Election Reconsidered)
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.3 года назад
In this video, I go through what Calvinists use as one of their greatest proof-texts for divine election. Acts 13:48 has stumped scholars for centuries. Calvinists claim it is a slam dunk for their doctrine of sovereign election. Non-Calvinists have offered very capable responses but they are often overlooked especially in today's new Calvinist climate. Today, I offer an even fresher observatio...

I'm not a Calvinist, never have been. Maybe I'm being a little too simplistic, but I don't know that I would want to serve the God of Calvinism. Think about it, according to Calvin, down through the centuries of time, God has created billions of souls and condemned them to an eternal hell, and they have no recourse. That does not seem very loving to me. In fact, that seems to be the height of cruelty.

The term "bought" (Greek: agorasanta) in 2 Peter 2:1 does not necessarily refer to the redemptive purchase by Christ's blood. Instead, it can indicate any form of deliverance. This broader understanding aligns with the context where false teachers temporarily escape the world's corruption through their knowledge of the gospel, rather than true conversion and salvation. Additionally, there is ambiguity regarding whether the "Lord" (Greek: despotēn) mentioned in the verse refers to God the Father rather than Christ. Since the term despotēn is never used specifically for Christ in the New Testament, it can indicate a general deliverance by God, similar to how God "bought" Israel during the Exodus. This interpretation suggests that the "bought" individuals in 2 Peter 2:1 were delivered in a historical or general sense rather than redeemed by Christ's atonement.

  • @user-tl2ed1mt8b

2 Peter 2:1 does not contradict the doctrine of limited atonement. The term "bought" in this context does not imply the false teachers were genuinely redeemed by Christ's atonement. If you want to argue that it does, you have to also believe that Christ atoned for the sins of people who still end up in hell forever suffering for their sins. That is absurd and is blasphemy.

I heard no refutation of Calvinism in this testimony. I believe your problem stems from a futuristic reading of the New Testament, rather than a preterist reading; which takes into account, Old Testament, symbology, audience, relevance, and time indicators. As for Calvinism’s negative effect on the missionary mandate, some of the greatest missionaries in history were Calvinists, including Calvin, Knox, Whitfield, Carey and Patton.

There are so many aspects of Calvinist teaching that run up on the rocks. If God is sovereign over absolutely everything, and nothing is done outside of His will, that means not a single one of our actions or choices we make is our own. He preordained everything...including all the sin we commit. The Fall, the murder of Abel, all of the ceuelty of man, the friggin Holocaust...they were all preordained by God. So God, according to Calvinist teaching, is quite literally the author of evil. And what does that say about God and His justice? If he preordains all the sins we commit, then how can he possibly be just in punishing us for committing them? The whole system of Calvinism makes absolutely no sense. It pains me that so many Christians are signing up for it these days.

Im not a "Calvinist" but have a hard time thinking Jesus paid the price for the sins of "all" but those that do not believe still face the wrath in judgement? That's double judgement.

I have every answer YOU can possibly want in regards to determinism.... You should have asked me.. I am a compatabalist /determinist.... I believe that all things are predetermined by God... yet Man is free to move within the limits of boundaries predetermined by God in order thast God's purposes will be accomplshed... an example of this is Jonah.. Jonah did Not wish to preach to Nineveh.. yet God.. led Jonah to pay for a fare on a cargo ship where he was the ONLY civilian.. and thru Jonah all those seamen came to believe upon God.. THAT was God's will for Jonah... show an example... Jonah witnessed to the crewmen.. 5.Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. 6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. 9. And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land. 10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him. Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. the men NOW feared the God of the Hebrews... before this they prayed to their pagan gods... GOD wins!!..

what is our role in making disciples... aka ...Evangelism? Matthew 28:20 reads Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. notice "teaching"... our role is NOT to ensure.. people are or get saved//.... though I am sure that is the goal of many missionaries.. they want to see something positive come from their ministry... I don't think belief in Calvinism affects. .anything one way or another in regards about sharing the Gospel... it only affects us.. if we believe we are to expect ones to get saved knowing that God has pre chosen some NOT to be saved... with that point of view... then Yes.. that will pour cold water on our wishing to share the Gospel.. but our Goal is to share the Gospel.. regardless if Salvation comes from any of it or not.. It is the work of GOD to make disciples... NOT OURS...

2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. Now I will explain this passage to you... these "false teachers"... were UNSAVED individuals.. 1 John 3:9 states,.. "Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for His seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God." preaching heresy is "sin"... and 1 John 3:9 tells us one born of God.. or aka ... SAVED... cannot sin....

I fought calvinism for years, decades even, but could no longer deny the biblical truth of election which permeates redemptive history cover to cover. A quote from Spurgeon broke one of the final barriers against it when he reportedly said that election is the most pride crushing theological doctrine. The final one was a thorough study of Romans, helped by the obvious mental gymnastics many commentators go through to deny predestination to support their bias against election.

God used calvinism to bring me to Christ it put the fear of the Lord in me like nothing else. What if im not elect i asked. It definitely humbled me and absolutely left me with nothing but the sheer mercy of God. Then God gave me the scripture when Jesus said... if anyone one comes to me I will in no wise cast out. Thats where I clung. And God has kept till today 12 years later. I landed in a local church that preaches free will, haven't tried to proselytize anyone but a couple mature christians including my pastor know even though some of those disagree. I dont believe its a matter of division. God has given me a love for the people in my church inspite of our differences. We can still preach the gospel and repentance together. In regards to the blaming of calvinism for coldness in witnessing is definitely not the issue. From experience of being in a fellowship that doesn't hold to those beliefs is still a common struggle. People on fire in the beginning usually and then dissipates... calvinism is not to blame but forgetting we are leaky vessels and need the fullness of God’s Spirit on a day to day basis. Usually its prayerlessness to blame

To be honest it seems that you had a really strange experience with radical Calvinism. So far, I found that some reformed concepts can't be avoided as they are derived from new testament writings. I personally can't say about myself I am a calvinslist but I can't ignore passages in bible speaking about predestination - Ephesians - or the attitude of the rest of the apostoles related to a sovereign God who calls people to salvation and saves them through grace giving them faith. Regarding the passion for the lost, you should focus on the apostoles attitude in speaking the gospel to the nonbelievers and do as they did. And they preached it but didn't ask themselves if God predestined or not, the affirmed God's sovereignty in people's salavation. I would say it's inappropriate to put your desire for rhe lost above how the apostles and disciples preached. It seeem that you are pretty much preoccupied by your feelings in this matter rather than the bible guidance - I only want to say that having passion for the lost doesn't exclude God's plan in predestination. I also wanted to outline your focus on your desire versus Calvinism that might be like cold water over your fire - but the most important thing is to see how bible teaches in this matter. Even if you choose to be or not Calvinist/reformed you can't avoid the passages that speak thematically and clearly avout predestination and God's sovereignty. I personally can't avoid them and I am not a calvinist. Peace

“Why I am no longer a Biblical Christian” “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.” That’s ^ NT Wright. Thomas Jefferson was right on-point when he said the following: “His [Calvin's] religion was demonism. If ever man worshiped a false God, he did. The being described in his five points is ... a demon of malignant spirit. It would be more pardonable to believe in no God at all, than to blaspheme him by the atrocious attributes of Calvin.”

And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. John 6:65-66. "Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.” Revelation 22:11. If these Arminian Provisionists persist in their unscriptural ways, then let them simply go their way. That is better than they stick around and metastasize the falling away that is already infecting Christ's church.

I’m glad you didn’t abandon the faith altogether and anathematize all Calvinists like many synergists do. For me, I came to Calvinism after reading the scriptures and seeing an all powerful God who does as He pleases. His wrath is real which made his grace and mercy that much more AMAZING to me. He alone saves and he uses his people to accomplish his will. I never shared my faith when I was not a Calvinist. Now I can’t shut up about it 😂. It has zero to do with “obedience” and everything to do with wanting to share the truth and see people saved. In my system, I give the good news and the rest is up to the Holy Spirit. It’s actually an extremely freeing thing. An issue I see with synergists is they think they can figure God out. I know I cannot. He’s God. I’m a finite creature. I believe his word which clearly teaches - He has chosen a people to save. People who are not saved are responsible for their sin. As a Presbyterian we have an a see for apostasy passages - people get cut out of the covenant. ”In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,“ ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1‬:‭11‬
