    always use a spraybooth when airbrushing to suck away most fumes to outside, not recirculate. inhaling paint parts, dust or thinner mist is never a good idea. it might not be harmful instantly, but builds up over times. you could also wear a paint facemask with filters, like most common 3m facemask. If you consider all paints as unsafe/unhealthy and take precautions, you're safe 👍 but maybe that's because most of us are old scalemodellers that started with thinner based paints.

    You are not totally off but you are seemingly lacking the background knowledge to correctly interpret the data you have shown. The safety data sheets mostly report information about hazard, i.e. if it says compound X is harmful when inhaled then this is a general property. However, what is actually important is the risk which is the combination of hazard and exposure. Just ask yourself if the acute or chronic effect thresholds are met in your case: if you spray a few drops of thinner per week in your basement, you will most likely be fine because the dose is just too low to do anything. If, on the other hand, you take up sniffing airbrush thinner as a recreational past-time, then this might be bad for your health in multiple ways. The same goes for pigments - if there is too much in the air, then it's bad. The same goes for all other things, of course. Just as Paracelus said: "All things are poison, and nothing is without poison; the dosage alone makes it so a thing is not a poison." Hope that helps.

    • @loginalreadytaken_
      @loginalreadytaken_ 7 дней назад

      Example exposure calculation for the airbrush thinner: Long-term exposure limit for workers is around 100 mg/m³ of air for inhalation. Assuming the room you are in has a floor size of 10 m², this represents an air volume of ~25 m³. There is up to 10% of 2-butoxyethanol in thinner. If the room has NO ventilation and you begin spraying, one would need to spray at least 25 g of thinner to reach the occupational limit value. Probably considerably more under realistic conditions, because the thinner will mostly land on the model with the color and there will (hopefully) some kind of ventilation. Also the long-term/chronic threshold may not be the right value to look at, but acute may be more relevant. Anyhow: taking care of ventilation and redirecting or filtering aerosols is ALWAYS a good idea.

    Good research. Let me help you understand the translation from English. It can be ACUTELY TOXIC...this means harmful and can lead to death, it is not just toxic it is ACUTELY ( this means VERY) TOXIC. So the info says it is harmful to breath. It goes on to say it is NOT mutagenic, this means it will NOT effect(mutate) your genes. SO you may die but it does not alter your genes. It is also NOT carcinogenic, this means it wont cause cancer. SO overall, it says, you are safe from gene damage and cancer but breathing it in can be very toxic(fatal). Wear a mask....you will thank me later.

    As a biochemist who has worked in, and run, research laboratories for around 40 years my advice is always assume a chemical maybe dangerous even if it isn’t considered so at present. Toxicity information changes all the time and things that were not considered toxic can eventually be considered so a few years later. Basically, when I paint my models, I use a booth and wear a respirator. After finishing a session I then remove all the residues from my workroom and open the window for several hours. Better to be safe than sorry.

  • @gallahant
    @gallahant 8 дней назад

    The term acrylic paint is misused in the modelling community. It seems most people think that acrylic = water based = non toxic. This is false. Tamiya X-XF paints are acrylics, just not water based but alcohol based. Both types of paint contain acrylic resins and having a different solvent does not change this fact. We should handle any paint as dangerous and take necessary safety measures. Health > modelling. Even when hand-brushing enamels/oils etc, we should not leave thinners/solvents open in a closed/non ventilated space.

    • @chrisveya7556
      @chrisveya7556 8 дней назад

      I agree. I still use a spray booth and a 3M mask with cartridges. One day, I forgot to put my mask back on after cleaning my airbrush real quick for a color swap, I got such a bad headache afterwards and for a good part of the next day. Did not feel good. Sure, it could have been due to something else, but most likely due to forgetting the mask. Just wanted to add I use all Vallejo and a brew made of their thinner, retarder, and flow improver. Thanks for the video! I'm currently planing on buying an airbrush and was thinking about chemicals in some of the used substances. As a former biochemists, I'm a little bit shocked how hard it is to find any SDS sheets from Vallejo (and also other manufacturers). I just found out that Vallejo might reformulated their thinner (and maybe the flow improver too) but I cannot find any current SDS sheets. The one you are showing is from 2015. I wil lreach out to vallejo and aks if the can provide a SDS sheet for the thinner. And (as already mentioned by another commenter): the chemical in the thinner and the flow improver is the same. water is not toxic. but you breathe it in and you drown. non-toxic does NOT mean safe to breathe in! if you have a substance that is non-toxic but harmful, that's not much better. and a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of stuff is non toxic but harmful if breathed in. SILICOSIS is caused by just breathing in a ton of rock dust. read up about a guy who got "popcorn lung" from having an evening snack of microwave popcorn every night where he started by opening up the package and breathing in the popcorn aroma. acrylic is basically a kind of plastic. and the concern with breathing in particulates is that you are sucking up fine plastic particles into your lungs. that can't be good. please don't think that because acrylic paint is non-toxic, that it's safe to work with without some way of keeping the particulates out of your (and your children's) lungs. same kinds of concerns come into play with 3d printing in case you decide to get into that...

    I worked with PPG water borne paint for several years. Although they touted how environmentally safe and non-toxic they were, I consistently wore a respirator in the paint booth. However, many individuals I worked with did not. Now, some years later, many of those same employees have developed cancer, impotence, infertility and are suing the company. According to a ex plant manager from that facility, PPG water borne paint was directly involved in the occurrence of cancers and other life changing conditions.

    Let's be honest, everything in our hobby is pretty much bad for our health and our environment. Microplastic and resin dust from sanding, cement fumes, IPA, putties, pigments, enamels, oils, lacquers and the list goes on. Of course these are toxic, but there is a difference between being exposed to these things 7-8 hours a day via work for example, or 1-2 hours via hobby on an irregular basis. The amount and the length of exposure matters. Keep in mind the concentration as well. The thinner has between 2.5-10% concentration. That means that in a 1ml of thinner there is 0.1ml of butylglycol at most. I do agree with you that Vallejo should have it on the bottle, but not even Mr Hobby Lacquer thinners have text saying, don't inhale the fumes, while that stuff is literally killing your brain cells and can make you blind if it gets in to your eye. When I know that I will airbrush for an hour straight, I will put a mask on just in case, if I just do a quick airbrush work like 5 minutes on some pieces, then I think it's fine. I use Mission Model, AK 3rd gen, Ammo and Vallejo. All water based. If in doubt, take precautions. It's never going to hurt you being careful.

      @@rogueplastic yes youre absolutely right. The lenght of exposure is decisive. I totally understand why Mr. Hobby has no declaration on any of their products, the stuff is made in China right? They dont care about anything concerning safety of the people. But i thought it could be different in Spain... Thanks for the feedback!

      @@chrisveya7556 Mr Hobby is Japanese. Even if their local laws don't require any of these labels, for these products to come in to Europe they have to follow European laws, so you want to question why the EU doesn't have it as a requirement. Usually companies will always do the bare minimum to comply with laws to stay cost effective, etc... I also understand why it's not a requirement. Literally everything surrounding us on a daily basis has toxic components in certain levels. If over time it turns out that something is very toxic and damaging even in the smallest amounts, it will be banned. Like asbestos. Until then it will be observed. Another way is for the consumer base to force a business to do things like that. As always, money talks and companies will do everything for more sales. It's good to keep each other in the loop within the community about potential dangers and hazards, because a lot of times bureaucracy and companies wont do it for us.

    I remember when Vallejo Model Color had natural pigments in them like cobalt and such. They had to have warnings on the bottle, because it was in it, but it was such a small amount that you would have had to ingest about a 100litres or more of it to be of any minor nuisance You are still only using a very small amount of Valleo thinner. But with any paint when you are spraying, should be in a spray booth, and wearing a respirator, regardless of the the type of paint used

      @@chrisveya7556 I think if it is proven that it is under acceptable thresholds, than legally they don't have to, right or wrong is just a matter of personal opinion at that point. Could just be a matter of time before it too gets reformulated, if the EU keeps banning the chemicals used in paint manufacturing. Hence why Vallejo has had to reformulate both the Game Color line and the Model Color line, as well as other paint manufacturers having to reformulate their lines

    I know from hauling these type of paints from coast to coast. When I had to pick up a load of paint,I had to plackerd the load as dangerous and flammable. This depended on the amount and there containers. I know that when I had to haul it I had to carry msd sheet as well as placking the load. So in my mind this is toxic to a point. In the amount that a modeler uses it is not according to epa or ohsa due to part per million. 😊
