I used a 1980s ball mouse in competitive shooters.
Is aiming primarily a skill that can be developed, or does our gear play a bigger role than we think? I test a 1980s ball mouse in competitive FPS games to explore the limits of skill, aim, and outdated peripherals.
*This unit is likely a transitional one and not necessarily made in the 1980s. The "1980s" tag is meant to represent the rubber ball and roller technology, which was actually designed even earlier.

This Mouse Just CHANGED EVERYTHING - Endgame Gear OP1 8k Review

Is the OP1 8k really worth the hype? I used to be skeptical of people calling for the importance of mouse shape, and would usually just neglect it and go for the most impressive weight or specs. After giving the OP1 8k a genuine try, I think it's safe to say that shape is very important! If you lift the mouse a bit so that the ball is 100% dropped it becomes godlike. Tips from an OG gamer :D
this is not a 1980's mouse , in 80's we used COM port mouse ( a serial port connector , not a USB , was no USB back than ) this model is USB 1.1 from 1999 ( USB 1.1 was released in 1998 ) just a office model , not a gaming , and it have 360 dpi . also most popular gaming ball mouse in 90's was Logitech Logitech WingMan Gaming Mouse was the most popular model in 1999 for gaming.
Hey, i know it's not an 80s mouse (as a collector of these things), but i recommend you to buy Genius GM-6 with AT/XT switch. You will need an serial connector converter to usb, but it is a true 80s mouse, without scrollwheel :D
So you discovered the inverted trackball!!!
Right a mouse from 1980s with USB.. LoL You know the first USB device was in 1996 right? I've gamed a lot with "ball mouses" in the '90s and not with USB , but PS/2 . Half-Life online, Counterstrike deathmatch online, Sin (online), Doom, etc. No laggy sh..t or stutters on my CRT screens..
Great video. I actually am old enough to remember playing CS 1.6 with a dell ball mouse. I actually preferred it to a laser mouse for a long time because the feel was so different.
Just a correction: this is a 90's mouse. How do I know? I was there and scroll wheels were only invented in 1995. BTW some ball mice were great back in the days. I played Quake and first CS Beta with a ball mouse and it was awesome. Great video!
el campo de practica de valorant es impresionante :O
it's just like no matter how expensive your car if you'r driving method still bad then you are bad. its not because the mouse made you good its the aim, practice, and timing consequence that make you better.
still a good player :D impressive
we used them to play unreal tournament and quake and halo and plenty of pinpoint accurate shooters back then it actually took me until like 2005 to switch to a optical mouse i still run 600dpi with a 500hz polling rate to this day to keep that slower feel . that is a newer mouse tho from late 90s i loved them microsoft ball mouses but that is not one from the 80s wouldn't have a scroll wheel if so lol.
Very good video man, I love it
op1w 4k has the same shape and spdt, and the difference between 4k and 8k is negligible, thoughts?
miss those days when we played quake, unreal tournament and halo with my dad and older brother with mouse like this.
ahhhh cs 1.6 days are back for 10minutes
This exact mouse and Call of Duty 4 were my childhood and teenage years. The thing weighed as much as an actual gun
the first thing i noticed in this video was the omori music XD
Not only did you have to take the ball out to clean, you had to clean the x and z wheels as well, removing any stuck gunk that the ball picked up... it was such a hassle.
Best mouse
Yeahhhhhh
I used to play with a ball mouse until mine broke last year
The Intelimouse ball mouse is from 1996 but this one is from around 1998-99, not from the 1980s, my friend. From 1987 you have Amiga mouse.
What game at 07:36
bo6!
now this is PURE SKILL, not like this decade there where player have no skill except need to buy good mouse LOL, 2012 logitech cheap mouse on CSGO and bad laptop best year because top frag everytime!
i've heard 8k mice can have a hit on framerate -- do you find that happening for you? maybe it's only an issue with wireless 8k?
8k is supposed to be more straining on your hardware, however I haven't noticed much of anything... except from mouse skipping in games that don't support it.
Nice 👌 Btw we didn't have to clean the ball. What got dirty (honestly super gross sometimes) are the two rollers that the ball moves for x and y axis. Those could collect all kinds of crud and even hair. Good times. 😆
Only works whit stupid games
Can u make a similar video with a very bad monitor vs best of the best 480hz oled ect, to see if there is a big difference in performance. Would be a cool vid
Mouse definitely from the late 90s. Ball mice were still common around 2000. No need to exaggerate, that’s still old. They work fine, just need cleaning. Not really a huge disadvantage.
Did u use mouse from space to ? OR pc 0086 to game ? What is the point of video ?
I bought this mouse like two weeks ago and have loved it. I have not had a wired mouse in about 3 years ( I bought the viper mini on amazon for like 25 bucks and used it for a little bit) and it is probably one of my favorite mice I have owned. I got this coming from an x2v2 mini and it took me no time at all to get used to the wire. With mouse bungees it is almost impossible to notice it has a cable. I am hoping they continue this line of op1 and just continue to make the specs better and the weight lighter. Imagine a 40ish gram op1.
This mouse is from the mid 90ies not the 80ies.
What's your hand size?
roughly 16.5 and 8.5 (cm)
I used that mouse back in 2000 when first counterstrike was released and also quake arena
I like how responsive it is but I can’t get used to the shape with my claw grip, the mouse lacks that hump in the back which I’m so used to feeling on my palm - wish I could get used to it though because it performs so well
My childhood at school had dos box and I would throw the ball from the mouse at other kids fun times
1980s mouse don't have usb connector...rather PS/2 port
bro played with the ball mouse in competetive shooters video game. i literally played ball mouse football in my backyard irl when I was 5 years old. 'breaking the mouse and extracte the ball.'
if it makes nois when moving you need to clean the rollers there is some hair in the sernsor of the rollers
Bro between games: "Guys hang on I just need to clean my mouse's ball real quick."
wtf a usb ball mouse i only had ps2 ones
after some time you need to clean the wheels in the mouse
80s we ahere still using them in the 90s beginning 2000s,edit and i rember that the first optical mouses where not that good they would jump will small movement of the mouse the ball mouses where better but after some time the optical ones got a lot better
This mouse got ball(s)!
You got balls
now play on a CRT monitor
You mean a late 90s mouse
Ball mouse with USB? Must be fake...
I played plenty of FPS's with a ball mouse back in the day, in fact using a mouse that was almost identical to the one used in your video. The games were different back then. Look up Unreal Tournmant 99 as an example. Many of the weapons in the game did not require precision, and ones that did often did not dominate gameplay. They were weapons like rocket launchers or flak cannons which had projectiles that travelled relatively slowly and did alot of area damage. Computers actually did have optical mice back in the 80's. They used a specialized hard plastic metallc mat to glide on, and they were not cheap. However, they were used by artists and graphic designers, not gamers. I used one on a Commodore Amiga to play strategy games. Joysticks, gamepads, or keyboard were the primary interface for action games back then. You can still play UT 99 on a modern PC, BTW, and it's alot of fun. It's very strategic compared to a game like Call of Duty. Unreal Tournament is all about controlling the map's power ups, weapons drops, etc., and knowing the best loops to run to do so.
You are wrong. The Computer Mouse was developed between 1965 and 1968 by German Engineer Rainer Mallebrein from Telefunken who basically took the trackball out if their Telefunken mainframe computer and put it in an external box. Yes, Trackballs were invented more than a decade before the mouse, as a controller for British Airforce radar screens. Not everything was invented first in the USA.
