Bicycling Minnesota's Lake Wobegon Trail's Northern Spur (August 8, 2024) Beautiful and Remote
We headed up to Walker Minnesota for a couple of nights (at the Country Inn Walker, a good place to stay) for three days of riding on three different trails. Our first stop was the northern spur of the Lake Wobegon Trail. The plan was to ride from Bowlus to Albany and then back past Bowlus to check out the Blanchard Dam on the Mississippi River. Unfortunately, rain showed up sooner than forecast and we had to cut our ride about 12-15 miles shorter than planned. We had heard this was a great section of trail and it is, definitely worth checking out. Nice and remote.

Bicycling Milwaukee's Hank Aaron State Trail (August 19, 2024) What a Great City!
Просмотров 170День назад
After hosting our granddaughter for a week and celebrating her brother's first birthday we needed some "us" time and decided to spend a few nights in Milwaukee. Over the years we had heard many disparaging things about Milwaukee that we were unsure of spending time there. These warnings turned out to be false and we found Milwaukee a wonderful city and the Hank Aaron State Trail (along with the...

      None along the Hank Aaron Trail. It is a sad reality that many bicycle trails have encampments along them. We encountered many encampments bicycling the Pikes Peak Greenway in Colorado Springs a few weeks ago. Nobody bothered us, but it does make one wonder how we can do better. Which trails in California do you ride? We are originally from California (Chico State Graduates), but have not ridden many trails in California. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Richard-nice to see this video drop :). I recall biking the Luce Line to Watertown a few years ago and that there was a grocery store close to the trail where I stopped to get a beverage, so I think you are right that you missed it (unless it went out of business :). Haven't done the Dakota trail this season but it is definitely one of my favorites. As I mentioned in video #1, I was at the Carver bike site over Labor Day weekend so nice to see the "tour" in the video - and less traffic noise than Baker for sure, as I recall (stayed 2x at the Katrina group camp site at Baker). We are indeed lucky with all that is available in the TC region :)

    That stretch you rode from the "wrong turn over the bridge" to the end of your ride was the river, but not in its original channel. Sometime back in the 50's (I think) they channeled the river as part of a flood control project. Essentially, it was a very meandering, slow moving river that flooded easily in the spring. They made it a straight shot so that water could move through faster. I don't know, but suspect that they made the diversion channel that you rode alongside in the first couple of minutes of the video at the same time. You are correct it is a marvelous trail. If you know where to look there are a couple of public restrooms and water fountains. The tower that you saw, but didn't comment about, at Falls Park is a free observation tower with great views of the falls.

    • @RichardMooreAndJulieMoore
      @RichardMooreAndJulieMoore Месяц назад

      Thanks for the info on the diversion. I wish I had known about the observation tower on a clear day it would have been a great view. Thanks for watching and enjoy the loop.

  • @StevenDietrich-k2w
    @StevenDietrich-k2w Месяц назад

    That stretch that you rode from the larger dam up to the spillway at 2:46 wasn't the river. It was the diversion canal that takes much of the flow of the Big Sioux river around the north edge of the city. It rejoins the Big Sioux at the bottom of the spillway and then continues east, out of town. From the spillway onwards you are riding along the actual river. I've walked the loop three times and ridden it on my bike a dozen times or so. It's a nice urban bike trail that goes through a dozen, or so, different city parks.

    The rowing teams were not on a river, but on a canal, a very old canal built in 1912, but was on the place of a Roman Canal.

    Thanks for the video, I live in St. Paul and was curious about riding in that direction, this gives me a better idea of what to expect.

      Glad it was helpful! It is a nice trail and by next year the trail will continue to spring lake park and allow us to ride on a trail from St Paul to Hastings. Of course from St Paul you can take trails to Minneapolis and beyond. Thanks for watching!

    I want to take the opportunity to say you showed in all your videos great natural scenery. I seriously consider traveling to a few of these places myself on my bike

    Thanks for the vid and info. Have you ridden the gap before? If not, any idea how good/bad the roads are in the gap? We're planning the KATY from KC this fall. Trying to decide if we want to ride or shuttle to a KATY trailhead from KC.

      You are welcome. We have never ridden or even driven the gap between the end of the trail just southeast of Lee's summit to pleasant hill. My research seemed to indicate it would be rideable depending on your comfort level on roads. We are not very fond of road riding. Another option would be to do the full Katy from Clinton. We did that back in 2021 and it was a great ride. Thanks for watching.

    Thank you so much for your video! My husband and I plan to bike this same route on our upcoming trip to Ely and it was great to see a preview of what’s to come!
