That river is a canal from Roman times that was the inland and pirate free connection between the Roman castellum at Leiden and the naval base at Naaldwijk. There was a large regional market in Voorburg.
1:44 The river with the rowers and river barge is a canal, the Vliet. 7:13 "Mooi hè?" (Beautiful, isn't it?) "Nou en of!"(You bet) Nice video. Glad you enjoyed the ride, despite the traffic in Delft and Den Haag.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed them. We really enjoyed our three weeks in the Netherlands, both the bicycling and just touring the many beautiful cities.
My family's roots are there and I spent my childhood there. The area has a rich past, oh and the entire area where you cycled is 3 meters or 10 feet on average below sea level in case you're wondering where all that water comes from.
It is amazing to realize that most of the areas we bicycled in were once under water. Such an incredible engineering feat. We absolutely enjoyed our 3 weeks in the Netherlands and learning about the history. Thanks for watching.
Nice series you made, my compliments. You had great advise planning the cities, the routes and also the season. Generally speaking best periods for this kind of bike trips in the Netherlands are in spring end of April until early June or in autumn end of August until mid Oktober.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the videos. We have had very good luck with European trips (hiking or biking) in the fall. The weather we had for most of our three weeks in the Netherlands was exceptionally nice and warm. The rain finally caught up to us during our four days in Amsterdam. Thanks for watching.
Same here, I really enjoyed the whole series and the two of you really entered the spirit of the Dutch cycling. It looks like Tulip tours were a good partner in the experience, did they move your luggage between your overnight stops? I can't wait to get back over, the Netherlands is a great model for how 21st Century living should be.
5:34 I can imagine this specific moment must have felt quite liberating after some two days through ports, alongside industry, through a bunch of towns, cities, and agro-industrial areas.
@@RichardMooreAndJulieMoore The Hague is indeed pretty dense and quite big. It has some wonderful parks, though and beaches and dunes nearby so it’s luckily still quite livable. I don’t like traversing it by bike (nor in a car) either: I always arrive by train and take one of the trams into the city.
No, only when there's an extra sign (Blue with white text: 'rechtsaf voor fietsers vrij' ) but going thru red is very 'Dutch'. Especially in Amsterdam ;)
Although I only live 4 miles from where I worked, the bicycling infrastructure was so marginal it felt like your life was in peril when I rode. I wish for wonderful infrastructure here so I can do more of my daily tasks by bicycle in safety. Thanks for watching.
I always smile when Americans use the word ocean when in fact they refer to the North Sea. Their own shores are invariably overlooking either the Pacific or the Atlantic Ocean.
7:12 Mooi heh? Indeed :)
Absolutely, I had been wondering what he said. Thanks for watching!!!

It always amazes me the depth of history when visiting European countries. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the info! We really enjoyed our tour in the Netherlands and the Delft to Leisen ride was so beautiful. Thanks for watching!
Richard, this has been a great series !
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed them. We really enjoyed our three weeks in the Netherlands, both the bicycling and just touring the many beautiful cities.
Leiden is pronounced a bit different. The 'ei' sounds quite like the English 'i' in bike. Glad you enjoyed our little country.
Good to know! We did indeed enjoy our three weeks in the Netherlands! Thanks for watching

You are right it did, especially after going through The Hague which was a bit congested and busy. A good way to end our tour. Thanks for watching!

The rowing teams were not on a river, but on a canal, a very old canal built in 1912, but was on the place of a Roman Canal.
Nice tour.
It was a wonderful time, the Netherlands is great. Thanks for watching!
Dutch famous painter Rembrand was born in Leiden.
We tried to visit the museum in Leiden but it was closed 😞 We still enjoyed Leiden immensely the windmill museum was wonderful. Thanks for watching!
2:44 that light was red… 😂
No right turns on a red light in the Netherlands?

A tour?, this is about my daily to and from work ;)

11:12 I live on the other side of road

You are blessed to live in such a beautiful area with wonderful biking. Thanks for watching!
3:36 min. standing on what once was called "het groene zoodje", here people were executed in the middel ages.
Wow! Thanks for watching!
7:37 that's called dunes not hills 🤣🤣
After bicycling in the Netherlands for a while, they seemed like hills! 😅 Thanks for watching!
If it ain't Dutch, it ain't much !

Habits are hard to change 😊 thanks for watching!
There is also the Gulf of Mexico. :P
