I found this film a great disappointment. There's no denying the talent involved in the making of the film but the plot is ridiculous, the characters are unrealistic, unfunny and irritating, and the moral of the story is trite. I came expecting Capra brilliance but soon realised that I was watching a turkey. I stayed with it out of a sense of duty but could not recommend it.

Pretty nice review of a film I've loved since it was first on TV--but did you actually do a lengthy review of "Mirage" without mentioning the fantastic score by young Quincy Jones?

On the television series( people periodically ask Lieutenant Gerard whether he thinks Kimble murdered his wife. His response is invariably "the law says he did." Ironically, when the lieutenant's son meets Kimble, he comes away from the experience uncertain of his guilt...and more or less forces his father to admit that if Kimble is innocent, he made a mistake. (There's a two-parter with Gerard's wife and Kimble, but I don't remember what happened there.)

"Columbo" rotated with "Hec Ramsey," "McCloud" and "McMillan and Wife." You can find the Bert Freed "Enough Rope" online. It's very entertaining, but "Prescription: Murder" is much better. I prefer the term "inverted mystery" for this genre. Blame that on R. Austin Freeman and Dr. Thorndyke.

In candidate for crime the firecracker remains bothered me and the bullet to the ballistics lab and then the ballistics report in under three hours in 1973 made me roll my eyes. I guess he really has someone downtown willing to drop every other case just for him to rush back and catch the murderer. This episode was too long and dragged for me at the end. But, I would still give it 3.5 out of 5.

I think that Steve McQueen's FINEST scene is when he says: "You're crazy. You'll kill everybody up there." McQueen's character cares deeply about the people who might be drowned, if the risky flooding plan is implemented. You can hear it in his character's voice.

I agree that the lesbian subplot was unnecessary, but I guess they had to find a reasoning for her murder. And Mrs Goodbody was by far the best character with her I-don't-give-a-damn attitude. Rowena Drake didn't have a single trace of dark charisma that would render all those murders sensible in her head.

A while back I watched this film for the 2nd time then recently I’ve been watching early 70s Columbos. “Keyes” constantly smoked a cigar, was totally obsessive about solving cases, so much so that he was considered unkempt by 40s standards. His boss got on him about not wearing a suit coat once. Something Keyes was too preoccupied to care about. I wonder if the creators of Columbo had this guy in the back of their minds.
