I am only 2 years older than this movie. I have a top ten list of films and this movie is my number 1. Great review from a great fan. Thanks. Sorry I didn't see your review sooner.
I feel like it's almost impossible to watch 'Rio Bravo' and not have it become a favourite. There's nothing else quite like it in terms of the feeling I get when watching it. Thanks very much!
Excellent review, really worthy of one the greatest Westerns of all time. Hope your review of El Dorado will come soon, also a great one. Of course you are absolutely right in saying that Rio Lobo doesn't hold up to the two others, but it was the first John Wayne movie ever I saw at the cinema here in Germany back in 1971 (I was 12 years old). Therefore it is somewhat special to me.
Thank you! I hope to watch El Dorado again soon, stay tuned! Rio Lobo isn't a bad movie, it's just not at quite the same level as the others. I can watch John Wayne in anything, and Jack Elam is fantastic in it.
Excellent review! And not too bad John Wayne and Walter Brennan impressions, also 😃. I like that Hawks quote about the three great scenes, and your choices for them. As you mentioned-- such top-notch acting, dialogue, direction, and pacing in this movie!
An absolutely perfect approach in this review. Why? Because you made it PERSONAL. And that's what Howard Hawks is all about. Relationships. What one person MEANS to another. When the Duke says, "That's WHAT I got," he means that a person has a value beyond what they can produce. When you're all alone, the very fact that someone shows up for you trumps every skill they might, or might no longer, possess. And yes, we gals love that Hawks always affirms that men & women have real, in-depth relationships, based on character & personality, besides all that cooking & cleaning & boudoir stuff! Those can go seriously wrong, as in the one that brought Dude crashing down, the one which has obviously made Chance so wary, too. But they can be enormously worthwhile, as well. So you let someone prove themselves: whether they're a drunk, a kid, an old-timer, or a flashy hustler. What you don't do is throw people away. That wonderful scene in the jail, where they're just waiting, is the equivalent of the scene on the Orca in Jaws, where the men tell stories about their lives on the water. . .singing included! Spielberg knows his film history, so I wonder if he had this decompression scene in mind, so perfectly balanced between threats before & after, so clearly emphasizing why the characters are where they are: because others are important to them, & they must do this job protecting them to keep their self-respect. 🤝🏻 Fabulous cast, but let me just give a nod to one player. Dean Martin deserved an Oscar at some point. Only Bing Crosby had as successful a career across as many forms as Dean. Team member, solo player. Radio, recordings, films, television, live performances, charity fundraisers. Comedy, drama. Musicals, straight roles. Longevity. They both had equal success in every field. The only thing Bing had that Dean didn't was that Oscar. And his performance here certainly proves he could act. And you don't get invited to play with the big boys, unless you've got what it takes! 🏆
Thank you so much! I had never thought of comparing that scene to the one in Jaws, that's a great observation. And I absolutely agree about Dean Martin. He was so talented in such a variety of areas. He would definitely have been deserving of an Oscar, especially for this movie. The movies he made, especially later in his career, might not always have been at such a high caliber, but he was always at least watchable, and usually a highlight of whatever movie he appeared in.
@@HildebrandProductions Thanks for the feedback. This is one of my favourite Westerns, & I'm a big fan of the genre. 🤠 I wouldn't be surprised if the two similar scenes, the one from Rio Bravo & the one from Jaws, aren't both about two thirds of the way in, just as a lead-up to the climactic sequence. A last chance to catch your breath before it all gets squeezed out of you, more or less. Although I think that's a bit more immediate in Jaws, if I remember rightly. It's been far too long since I've seen either film, I fear! 🦈 And yes, Martin really IS that good. I haven't seen the 1958 film, The Young Lions, but I've read that he out-acted both Marlon Brando & Montgomery Clift in that one. Not bad! I'm afraid he wasn't out for awards or very much the swell-headed 'artiste' so he just took what was on offer & didn't worry about accolades. He could have had much better vehicles, more worthy of his talent, if he hadn't been so easy-going. Glad you respect his abilities, as do I. 🎙
Wow! Really good review. Our views and opinions on this film are remarkably similar. This and El Dorado are my two favorite John Wayne pictures. Excellent cast in both productions, although considerably larger in the latter. ✌🏼😎👍🏻
Thanks so much! It's great finding people that love this movie as much as I do. I'm still intending to review El Dorado at some point. The Wayne-Mitchum dynamic is fantastic, and James Caan is so much fun too. And Christopher George! Man, I think I'd better watch it again soon.

Another enjoyable review for a personal favorite movie. I look forward to notification for your new content.

Dropped today
Not only the Duke's best but one of the greatest Westerns ever made
I like your videos. You do a great job. Please think about investing in a lapel microphone. Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work!

Thanks very much! I just love quoting these lines, if I end up sounding anything like the original actor it's purely by coincidence.
Wonderful movie, and fantastic review! Subscribed:)
Thanks so much!
Rio Bravo is my favorite Western. I never get tired of watching it.

Great job
Wasn't the only time Duke and Elvis missed working together. Elvis was supposed to fill the boots of La Boeuf but turned down the role.
Rio Bravo is better. But like both.
I agree about the hat. Shame
