I am a photographer based in the English Lake District. My photography is predominately landscape/travel.
This channel is to allow me to share my experiences as I go out taking photographs. This could be a short trip aimed just a getting the photographs or a longer time combining both hiking and photography. I may also put up some videos showing the processing or framing of my photographs.

Using PhotoPills to Decide on a Sunset Location - Landscape Photography

Here I head to a location for sunset having used PhotoPills to decide on it. Being pushed for time I decide to working in the morning and then go out for some afternoon/evening photography. I use PhotoPills to select a local location to capture images at sunset and then possibly some astro photography if the weather is suitable. I also check the weather on Clear Outside. A Chance of Colour and Mist over Derwent Water - Landscape Photography
Просмотров 259День назад
Here I head down to the lake (Derwent Water) as I believe there is a chance of both colour at sunrise and some mist. The previous day there had been quite a bit of mist around. I this checked out the Clear Outside app and felt there was a chance of mist in the morning and also some colour at sunrise. Due to time constraints I just head to my local lake (Derwent Water) to see if it happens. Gear...

Out Again, is it the Walk or is it the Photography - Landscape Photography

Here I go out and discuss why I go out. Is the main impetus the walk in the fells or is it to capture images with the camera. I am a member of The 617 Club. This is an on-line club set up by Simon Baxter and Thomas Heaton. The other night there was a presentation by Eric Bennett. One question that was raised was what would you do if you stopped doing photography and I discuss this for me in thi...
Blending Shutter Speeds to get the Desired Image - Landscape Photography

Here I go out and get images of different shutter speeds and then blend them together to get the desired image. In a recent video (ruclips.net/video/-CQJkgyYk7I/видео.html) one of the images was a blended image. I got questions about the image, what it was and how did I do it. I thus decided to go out to get more similar images and show how I get the final blended image. Gear I use making these...
Autumn Glory at Scaleber Force - Landscape Photography

I head to Scaleber Force in the Yorkshire Dales to capture it in its autumn glory. For a while I have been wanting to go back to Scaleber Force and capture it in its autumn glory. This last weekend I have the time to go over there as it is an hour and three quarter drive for me both ways. I was hoping I had not left it too late and found there was still plenty of colour with all the fallen leav...
Exploring Whorneyside Force (a new waterfall) - Landscape Photography

Given the flat weather I decide to head to a waterfall. Having not been to Whorneyside Force I go and explore this waterfall. The weather continues to remain flat and overcast at the moment. I thus felt that heading off to some waterfalls would be best. I searched the net to try and find some falls in the Lake District that I had not been to. I came across Whorneyside Force in Great Langdale wh...

Slater Bridge & Cathedral Cave, Autumn Colour after the Storm - Landscape Photography

ISO 10,000?? Good heavens! (Pun intended.) My ancient digital camera only goes up to ISO 400, and you really don't want to use that unless you're not bothered about enlarging the image too much. In your image I can see the Pleiades with nebulosity, the Andromeda Galaxy and the 'double cluster' between Perseus and Cassiopeia. I had difficulty finding the constellations, to be honest, as I'm used to viewing the sky from more light-polluted skies. Wonderful!
Thank you so much for commenting. Modern cameras are amazing. I did apply some noice reduction to the images. It is amazing you could see these constellations, it is just a load of stars to me!
@@keswicklimeyphotographyOh, I see. Well, the brightest 'star' in the image is actually the planet Jupiter. It's really prominent in the sky at the moment. Merry Christmas!
Thank you for the info. I should learn what is what if I capture images of it.
I took my first image with my Sony 20mm f1.8 that evening - very clear, but the stone circle is sadly missing and 3-4 hours away.
Thank you for taking time to watch and comment.
@@keswicklimeyphotography My pleasure, no nightshots from Castlerigg in my archives - just daytime images. It would be good to stay in Keswick again soon with my new lens. Enjoy Christmas
Thank you for sharing those wonderful images of places in my favourite Dale that I can no longer get to. Regards Edward.
Thank you for taking the time to both watch and comment on my video.
seemed a bad day overthere ,, i am away upto duddo ,, northumberland for the solstice so hoping i get better weather

Nice. Thanks for sharing
Thank you too for commenting.
Hi David give Ventusky for fog etc and VIEWFINDR for afterglow…..I use the three along with Clear Outside. Hope this helps 👍
Thank you for the information.
Every time I see St John's Church I'm reminded of Hugh Walpole's grave. "Why don't you come along?" - it's great to walk these tracks vicariously. I love the northern Lakes but am only able to visit once or twice a year, but doing so from my chair is the next best thing🙏 Informative videos too - pick up some useful tips and great ideas for next locations. Many thanks!
You are welcome. I was a churchwarden in the past at Parish Church of St John and know that grave quite well. Thank you for commenting.
Today 15th December 2024 - The best sunrise and sunset colours of the year here - Hope that you captured them over water!
Thank you for commenting. I don't know where here is. I can become very blinkered and needed to get the video do so have been in front of the computer most of the day. Not even thought about going out with the camera.
@keswicklimeyphotography Shropshire, but they covered large areas of the country south into the Cotswolds
Having not been out really, I do know it was overcast and damp.
Nice and moody location and photos 🙂👍
Thank you so much, it is much appreciated.
@keswicklimeyphotography 🙂
Well done for braving the rather inclement weather! Loved the pictures of the misty hill and the waterfall. 👍
Thank you for your kind words.
Really like your photos 😊
Thank you for your kind words.
Perfect weather for waterfall photography. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Brave to go out in this weather. Waterfall photos are good! I actually took a panoramic photo in the lake district in the summer and I forgot to take note of which lake it was. I would love to send it to you and see if you can work out where it is (south or south west lakes as we came from Manchester)
By all means sent it to me. My e-mail address is on the contacts page of my website which is referenced on the home page of this channel. I prefer not to put it out in a comment.
Easy explanation of why I walk so often......it's a black short-haired border collie called Jet! Often, when my wife is with me, I get to take a camera ;) Great video David thanks.
Thank you for commenting.
Hi David - great to accompany you virtually on this lovely walk. Fabulous scenery and pictures. I particularly liked the two in which the clouds were catching some colour. How fabulous to be able to walk this 5 mile circuit from home.
Thank you for your kind words. I am very fortunate to live where I do.
This is the first time I've visited your channel. Subscribed! You're so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. I suspect the landscape changes character with the seasons and the moods of the weather. Endless opportunities for photography. That last image looked for all the world like a volcanic eruption! As for walking and photography, for me it's a matter of striking a balance. I don't make photography the reason I'm walking, but I always keep photo opportunities in the back of my mind if I happen across something interesting.
Thank you for commenting, and more so for subscribing.
For me, it's always for both The Walk, and, The Photography. I can always do one without the other but combining them both elevates everything.
Thank you for taking time to comment.
I would do a lot more walking if I lived where you do, but it's the camera that willingly drags me out into the hills (Like 16:18 in your excellent video).
Thank you for your kind words.
Both for me.
Thank you for both watching and commenting.
For me it is the walk, too. But the camera gives me another reason to get out the door. Once I'm there, it's about the walk. But leaving the house is often about the camera.
Yes it is not straight forward. I am the same sometimes. The need to make a video gets me out but being out gives more joy than the making of the video or the photography.
Great video. For me its both 👍🙂
Thank you for taking the time to both watch and comment.
It's easy to decide for me. If I had no camera for photography I would still go out and walk in nature, but if I couldn't go out and walk, then no camera would be needed, the photography is just a bonus of the walking.
Thank you for commenting. Very similar to me then.
21:19 - I've always thought of Newlands Valley as The Shire but it looks more like Mordor in that image😁!
Thank you for taking time to comment. I think I understand where you are coming from.
Just for those that don't know the area, at 10m 30 sec you go from the weir up the path to the right .. over the wall and onto the path that leads to Buckstones Jump, (which by the way on the OS map is Buckstones Jum - some one forgot to type the P :) ) . As you start on this path, a couple of hundred yars in there is a path off to the left that leads you back down to the beck. Once you get to the beck there's a path that leads up to BJ. There are at least 6 really decent waterfalls along this path and one VERy big one. Really loved the video and I'm def going to give this blending a go - many thanks
Thank you so much for commenting. On the day I was there I did not have a huge amount of time before sunset so just headed straight for Buckstones Jump but did notice there was quite a bit of white water on the beck. I must go back sometime and explore that part of the beck. Both the paper OS map I have and the on-line one have the 'P'. Maybe you have an older copy and someone has contacted OS and they have corrected it.
You could blend based on different aputures as well, though I suppose the depth of focus might differ some. Finally you could adjust ISO as well, though it seems many pros don't like to be much above 100 for landscapes.
Yes you can blend images based on any criteria that affects the look of the image, e.g. focus stacking. Note that the images I blended were based on the effect of the shutter speed. However, to get the differing shutter speeds images also had different ISO, aperture or use of filters but those items, in my opinion, made little difference to the images compared to the shutter speed.
Thank you for this amazing video, keep on making them :)
Thank you for your kind words.
Good walk through the blending process. At the first waterfall I would have edited out that tree branch lying alongside the water as it fell, I felt it detracted. Generally a good informative video. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your comment. I find it difficult to remove things that were actually there.
@@keswicklimeyphotography I understand you reluctance, however, I feel that most photography presents an idealised view which is why editing is a thing in the first place. Unless you are documenting reality I feel that a tad of artistic license can be ok which is why you blur waterfalls. Thank you once again for the detailed explanation of the processes.
I am getting there. I am starting to remove somethings but tend to be small and easy to remove. When ever I have tried removing larger things the image has looked worse. I need to start playing around in photoshop with this as so far have only used Lightroom for removals.
good enjoyed watching that

We were up there last year, we went to Stainforth Force to get images of the Salmon jumping the falls. Next time I must take in Scalebar Falls too. Another enjoyable Video - thanks.
Thank you for commenting. Have not been to Stainforth Force. Must go sometime.
@@keswicklimeyphotography it's the other side of the road from the carpark in Stainforth. Scalebar looks better for photography from your video David, but if you are parked at Stainforth it's not far at all.
Thank you for the information.
Very inspirational images I love waterfalls 😊
Thank you so much for your kind words.
Great location and very fine shots! Quite busy by the look of it - it's relatively rare in Scotland to have to jostle with hordes of other tripod-bearing brethren .
Thank you for your comment. I think that the most of us there at one time was four, though there were comings and goings. Problems of a well known location. I have had worse at some spots in Iceland.
Very nice place David! Love the photos!
Thank you so much.
I'm kinda favoring the images near the half second shutter time. Nice work. Thanks for sharing
Thank you again for watching and commenting, it is much appreciated. Waterfalls are individuals. A particular shutter speed may suit one at a particular time but not another and not on a different day with more or less water coming down.
@@keswicklimeyphotography I was referring to images in this video. I agree that different conditions and especially distance to the subject can greatly affect the effects of shutter time.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I understood what you were saying about the video but then went off on a general point about waterfalls which you are all too aware of.
Lovely photos 📸 limey lovely place scaleber force

Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment.
Nice photos limey lovely stuff 😊
Thank you so much.
Are you crossing private property to get to these locations?
The simple answer is probably yes but it is not that simple. I England there are two bits that impact on this. Firstly that are public rights of way. These have existed for many years and give people the right to walk over private land but must keep to the designated paths. Then in 2000 the Right to Roam came into being. This covers about 10% of land in England and Wales. This means that if it is public access land you don't have to stick to designated paths even if it is private property. "Access land includes mountains, moors, heaths and downs that are privately owned." So does not apply to farm land etc. I hope that helps.
@@keswicklimeyphotography Thank you for the info.. In the states "trespassing" on private property can cause problems. We have apps available that clearly mark the private property that may be located within a government or publicly owned tract so that one doesn't wander onto it, however of course, some choose to not follow the law..
Here in the UK all land is owned by somebody and this can go back years hence the development of rights of way. Even here in the Lake District the land is owned by someone even the large rugged mountains. A lot of the land is owned by the National Trust, a large charity set up over 100 years ago.
I'm here for the learning. I love the video.
Thank you for both watching and commenting.
Nice .. very interesting

I have to agree David, practically the same shot. When we were there yesterday those leaves had turned yellow and were very attractive, no sky when we were there either, just a white sky :( . You'll see the difference in my vlog on Saturday morning if you watch it :). Thank you for the heads up and sharing :)

@keswicklimeyphotography Even waterfalls need trees
I would think some sunrise or perhaps sunset images from that location would be great to explore the potential. Thanks for sharing
