I've been in that boat, too-French Dragon Quest wiki, admittedly small potatoes, but left FANDOM and never looked back, and now we have a tiny but close-knit community and we do our own thing, fully independent. The website is hosted by an admin of Poképédia (French Bulbapedia, also independent and ad-free) for 7 euros a month-the price of hosting a site definitely decreased since 2010 lol. And we've been preaching independence to all who can hear us, and trying to make connections with other wikis in the same boat, though sometimes it admittedly turns a little independanter-than-thou xD I also was a community member on several other Wikias and maaan, the shit that I saw go down. The big dumb rush towards making things mobile friendly resulting in a worse experience for everyone, the irrelevant FANDOM-written articles at the bottom of pages (for a long while there was something about the 50 shades of grey on the Animal Crossing wiki), the autoplaying videos on top of articles with STOLEN footage (I isolated some gameplay footage and also someone's original animated video, and tracked down the authors, who confirmed didn't give permission). Paid employees behaving cattier than the unpaid teen laborers they were meant to help, the works. Find any contributor of years on this hellsite and the stories they'll have to tell, I swear. Independence now and forever. And also, eat the rich

tbf its not that surprising to me that weird gloop was chosen. being a osrs player i can honestly say its the single best game wiki ive ever used. It has virtually everything and is linked together so thoroughly that it makes using it a breeze. Hopefully they keep expanding their reach with other games because itd make a lot of games easier to get into if they had a wiki as well done as runescape's

I can highly reccomend Indie Wiki Buddie which redirects to indie wikis instead of fandom or if there isn't an indie alternative, it can redirect to a better frontend for fandom sites

Unrelated to most of the video but I think it's incorrect to say OptiFine is a joke right now 4:14. It's exactly as good as it was, the only difference is that baseline minecraft is better optimized nowadays and the average PC is more powerful, so the difference between OptiFine and no-OptiFine is not as big as it was. Plus, yeah, there are now new mods that boost performance in much better ways now by modifying the game more, but OptiFine is the closest we still have to a better performance while keeping the game as Vanilla as possible.

This problem actually goes way farther than this. Fandom is owned by the president and ceo of Wikipedia, who pays for this service to exist. Fandom has zero costs, and generates massive profits.

When I think Minecraft Wiki, I think of the old wiki.

What I find most suspicious about optifine capes is that if I don't go on Minecraft for a while, my cape is gone. I log into the optifine cape interface, and it's now under a different username, almost as if they're reselling cape keys on something like ebay or whatever. My passwords are strong, all different from each other, and I have no issues with anything else in terms of being hacked, but without fail I ALWAYS have opticape issues every time I come back to the game after a long hiatus. Even after changing passwords, it seems to happen without fail on both of my optifine Minecraft connected accounts. Suspicious. Either they're reselling them, or their site is so goddamn awful in terms of security. Noticed with a quick google search that others have this problem too. A lot.

The problem is that there's something called sword swapping making the mace deal the swords dmg with the effect of the mace so cool down isn't a problem Yes the mace can get countered by using slow falling or a bow but if you're fighting against multiple ppl and they're hogging ip on you it's very easy to at least hit once especially if they're holding totems

i remember making packs around the time people transitioned from using mcpatcher to optifine. I guess I just assumed everything was above board at the time bc like, how could it not be? with how obviously the same they were in the texture artist side as you said, I never would have imagined it was just ripped without permission. also i think i always read the "mcpatcher not needed" as genuine instruction not ill intent bc from a player's perspective at the time, installing mcpatcher was just what you did, so clarifying it wasnt required as a prerequisite (or later even compatible) makes more sense in context to me. it's like clarifying something doesnt need iris if its shader related today, because most players would just naturally assume. That said, YIKES!!! Hard to imagine good faith elsewhere so who knows really, maybe my assumption of that statement as a teenage texture artist was just naively optimistic.
