Dragon Quest II - The right game at the right time | Retrospective Review
Dragon Quest II is a true sequel in every sense of the word - a bigger and better Dragon Quest. But not all of the changes made were for the better, and the game's cursed development cycle nearly ended the careers of series co-creators Yuji Horii and Koichi Nakamura.
But when Dragon Quest II was first released in January of 1987, it was very well received, and many Japanese fans remember it fondly decades later. Because even the game’s most glaring flaws ended up working in its favor.
This is my retrospective review of Dragon Quest II - the right game at the right time.

Final Fantasy VII Remake - More than just nostalgia | Full Spoiler Review

Even though Final Fantasy VII is one of my all-time favorite games, I’m one of those people who never really wanted a remake. But the Remake ended up proving me wrong. Now, almost four years after the game first came out, and with Rebirth right around the corner, I wanted to revisit the first part of the Remake trilogy and find out how the experience has aged in the years since. #FinalFantasy #...
Dragon Quest - The Mother of All JRPGs | Retrospective Review

Dragon Quest wasn’t the first Japanese RPG. And depending on how you keep score, it might not even have been the first console RPG made in Japan. People who weren’t around back in the day often ask what makes Final Fantasy VI (also known as FF6 and sometimes FF3 US) so good. Great info. I've been a fan since DQI came out when I was a kid yet there was some new info in here for me, thank you. I played the first Xenoblade recently. I really enjoyed the story and characters for the most part, and the concept of repairing Colony 6 and filling out the encyclopedia. However it ended up getting very tedious, and far too much RNG. I think I will check out 2 some day, but hope they fixed some of these mechanics and improved the combat a bit.

Nintendo Power was doing some kind of promotional thing, and they literally sent me and other subscribers a free copy of Dragon Quest (yes I know the video mentions this). I have to disagree that the remakes of this game solve a lot of the issues. Maybe the pixel remaster does but my playthrough of the GBA port earlier this year was an absolute slog. I do agree overall with this video in that I believe the designers deserve praise for their risk taking and establishment of series staples. I also had a very similar experience where I had to force myself to stop grinding to go finish the game, though I never derived any enjoyment from that even though I do in other ff games.

I might be one of the few people left in the world who loves grinding for experience and getting stronger, and your description of that part was excellent. I still look for it in new games, but it's not part of the design anymore. I get why people don't enjoy it, but still love it. I think your description was perfect - life isn't like that. I've worked extremely hard on certain facets of life, and it got me absolutely nowhere. But in these games, you do get stronger every time, and that's so rewarding and the perfect form of escape. I love ff6, I played the snes version (FF3) when i was a kid and got stuck right at the final boss never being able to defeat him then I was never able to find it again, until one lone day, 12 years later, I come across the anthology collection at a swap meet. I instantly recognized the game I knew as a kid and didnt care it cost my whole weeks allowance. FF6 is one of the very few games I have played all the way through more than once. I love the story, I love the character, I love the music, and I LOVE Kefka. Thanks for sharing with me your appreciation of this game and putting it into words Ive always had a hard time of describing. Thank you very much for this video. It's my favourite game of all time and this video which describes very well why it's a masterpiece. I was born in 1999, so I didn't know the SNES version, but the GBA version (so for me Dragons Den, Soul Shrine and the new espers will always be key challenges that I don't want to trade for the experience of the original SNES game). But, through this video I was amazed to realise how groundbreaking the SNES version was - some small ideas such as switching between characters with ATB bars filled made such an impact to the extent that we take them for granted nowadays.

    Hey! Nice video and nice analysis on FFXVI (it is as good as all the other FF videos on the channel😊). As a nostalgic long time fan of this series I really find crazy how a franchise once was so good and so powerful to give us stories and games like IV-VI-VII-VIII-IX-X and so many others, now has become this derivative mess of an arpg that only ever thrives when it copies from other once inferior franchises like Devil may Cry or Game of Thrones. Of course this is far from a bad game but I just wish for them to come back to their roots. Stop indulging in copying what works for others and tying instead to regrasp the greatness of past FF storytelling and characters. Maby one day....

    • @AltercateTV

      Whatever FF17 ends up being, I just really hope it's going to be one cohesive vision, and that they have the courage to just do whatever they want to do, without worrying about what the market wants. But I suspect Square Enix and Final Fantasy are too big to think like that these days. Too much money at stake.

    Can't comment on this game specifically since I haven't played it. I was oversold on it, but asked for a refunded immediately as the reviews came out, and it has nothing to do with gameplay. It's a really tall order to be proclaiming one to be a CT successor, I didn't followed it closely so I don't know if the studio claimed that or the fans did. Mimicking the visual or presentation aren't enough, which is why Chrono Cross is a great game, but isn't one of my favorite game. CT has soul, but for me it was the unforgettable characters and their relationship, that's what made it special for me personally. The reason why the adventures in CT was fun for me is due to the characters.

    • @AltercateTV
      @AltercateTV 17 дней назад

      I think when it comes to the CT comparisons, it's a bit of both. Gaming media blew it out of proportion, but the studio definitely welcomed the comparisons, even going so far as to reach out to Mitsuda to compose for them. It's pretty much inevitable people are going to compare the games at that point lol.

  • @erikahuxley
    @erikahuxley 23 дня назад

    I'm playing the game now, 40hrs in, and it's alright, but didn't amaze me like I thought it would. I will beat the game, but the gameplay is not inspiring and can get tiresome with the grinding. The decision to cap the experience points from the monsters after a few level ups made the RPG aspect completely pointless. It's bad enough that you have to spend so much time grinding, but it's not even rewarding. I guess I am more used to the old Squaresoft's jrpg trope of having an overworld and epic heroism, and slightly more serious overtone. Actually I like the light hearted dialogs in this one, the unique recurring NPCs, and the watching the growth of the two protagonists. The game is padded to stretch out the total playtime, but I already experienced enough of the gameplay so it is now just a chore, and is continuing playing just to finish the story. I read that the later series from this franchise become more childish and animoo like, which is enough to let me know I'm not in the right age and demographic this franchise is meant for. So not sure if I want to bother playing the second chapter after this one, and not likely will be play any newer games from this franchise. edit: just beat the game, disappointing and waste of time. read some reviews of second chapter and it seems more of the same. i'm done with this franchise.

      Great question! I think the main thing would be to just add more detail. A treatment similar to how FF7R has reimagined the original game's world and story with lots of added texture and nuance would probably work out really well for FF6. It'd be super cool to spend even more time with the different heroes and learn more about their past, see them interact with each other in various side quests, etc. The main story would probably benefit from introducing more freedom in the World of Balance while slightly pulling back the leeway given in the World of Ruin, to make a tighter, smoother experience and give the game a stronger narrative thrust after the Floating Continent. Combat would also need a total overhaul to make something with more depth to it. I'd also love to see what they'd do with the Magicite system. Lots of potential there!

    Thank you for this video, Altercate! It was a pleasure to watch, as always. I have a love-hate relationship with this game. I appreciate everything it did for the JRPG genre as a whole, and it is fundamentally a good game, but the unbalanced battles and the cryptic puzzles certainly don't show the game from its best sides... DQ2 is one of those games that I'm happy that I played through once (I played the NES version), but probably wouldn't want to ever touch again. Fortunately, the next game is Dragon Quest 3, a much much better game. I'm looking forward to seeing your video on that, once it drops! On another note, I think I said (or hinted) this on another video, but I would love if you would cover the original Phantasy Star series. It would be lovely to see videos on the original Phantasy Star on Master System, and Phantasy Star 2, 3 and 4 on Mega Drive/Genesis!

      Hey, nice to see you again! I remember your comment about Phantasy Star. The Phantasy Star series is definitely on my "to do" list for retrospectives. I'd love to go through the four original games at some point. Sadly it'll probably takes a couple of years before I'll be able to get to them, given how slow I'm able to put these videos out lol

      @@AltercateTV Thank you! And no worries. Seeing that I have clearly commented a lot about Phantasy Star and that you have the games on your to-do-list, I'll stop nagging you about them now. XD
