Antiheroes & Why Are They Better Than Heroes? | Video Essay
As an audience, we love gangsters. We love crime thrillers psychopaths and villainous origin stories. The Hero's Journey has been traversed many times, and watching the same good-guy story play out repeatedly can get tedious. We want a character who does the wrong thing but for the right reasons. We want a character who loses their marbles, commits a crime, makes mistakes, wreaks revenge, contradicts themselves, and changes their mind. These are what are known as antiheroes. To get a better feel for the intricacies of the antihero, we’re going to deep dive into three different examples, and examine ways in which they crossover: Patrick Bateman from American Psycho, Lou Bloom from Nightcra...

Bong Joon-ho is one of the most idiosyncratic filmmakers of the modern era. The South Korean director has been working on films since the ’90s and has become a mainstay of International cinema over the years. That is, of course, thanks to his impeccable body of work, which showcases his remarkable consistency and ability to deliver wild shifts in tone and style. No two of his films are alike, b...
Why Does the Israel-Hamas War Relate to the Zone of Interest More Than Any Other Holocaust Movie?
Просмотров 4022 месяца назад
The masterful juxtaposition of the mundane and the horrific in Jonathan Glazer's Oscar-winning "The Zone of Interest" offers a quite unconventional yet chilling take on the horrors of the holocaust. Mr. Glazer's subsequent acceptance speech at the Oscars stage explicated what his film stands for: how easy it is to dissociate ourselves from the savagery around us and watch the seeds of dehumaniz...

Personally, I'd take The Godfather as his greatest performance. I've watched the movie over 80 times, and I still can't get over how subtle, and yet how exactly right all his movements and mannerisms are. A miracle of a performance. Decades from now no one will believe that Don Corleone, Terry Malloy, and Stanley Kowalski were all the same man.
"A Streetcar Named Desire" as an honorable mention? Wut?!? No one had ever seen fire and sexuality like that from a film actor. Brando changed the game with that performance.
🤡
I haven't watch the "Witches from East", but I strongly believe that "As good as It gets" should be in this top 10 and his Frank Costello from "The Departed", probably one of his last and most fine performances.
Apocalypse Now and even date I say Superman's day in first island were left out. Not even honourable mention here they were given.
Not a bad list. Just watched Young Lions. Couldn't take my eyes off of him. He is brilliant. Of course he was known from the beginning from Streetcar !!
Stellllaaaa!!!!(Ripped t shirt)
YES METHOD ACTING YOU CAN GO HIGH UP BUT LIVING THE PART YOU GO THROUGH THE ROOF LIKE JAMES DEAN AND SPENCER TRACY +
i feel the same about imdb. But not everyone votes on there so it could always be better and imdb dose not have every movie. So there could be really great ones that we well most likely never come across and i feel that is very sad indeed.
I want to have his babies
i want him to have mine
Tom fanboy but its cruise ones
Paul Dano Met Harry Potter
Paul Dano Is The Coolest Dude
Great job! Loved the brief study of some of Brando's best
Another one is Chinatown(1974)
I've done the same over the past year, with only a couple of new entries (since I started), left to watch now. Interesting that you found some similar films a slog, and some similar gems. I guess part of the beauty of the IMDB list is that it's ever changing. Also working my way through the Sight And Sound List, am definitely finding that one tougher going
A practical man. I respect that
Yes food first
He had more emotional power than any other actor I can think of. I know he didn't always want to go the distance with every film and didn't like to learn his lines. Unlike almost all other performers, Brando left nothing backstage, nothing unexpressed. He poured his entire body and soul into his acting while also being able to think about technique, and make technical choices at an emotional peak of intensity. It is like seeing 1000% if such a thing were possible. Later in his career, in the movie "A Dry White Season" with Donald Sutherland, he played a South African lawyer, mastering the accent, and he was mesmerizing in the court scenes. I can understand why he withdrew from acting, possibly similar to why Daniel Day Lewis left acting. The toll on actors of such power and total commitment to what they are doing has to be tremendous. I think perhaps he didn't respect himself enough to live a long and healthy life, so he went to excess in the extremeness and self destructiveness of his life choices. Everyone who admires him should watch "Listen to Me, Marlon" which includes audio tapes he made for himself about acting, how he thought about it, explored it. Nancy Cetlin
The GODFATHER❤❤❤❤❤❤

YES
Ronin really screwed over the Chings by giving Dodo that pineapple.
it really scared me when the temple gods turned their backs. kinda says that "you're on your own now, dipshit"
Rename it “antivillians”
Not a single antihero was discussed
I am pretty sure we discussed a total of three anti-heroes after an extended intro.
Dude put Patrik Bateman and deniro in Taxidriver on the tumbnail of a video on „anti heroes“….my brother in christ
They are, in fact, anti-heroes. Not every anti-hero ends up doing good at the end of the day. Some of them are morally corrupt, like Patrick Bateman or Lou Bloom, and some of them are more tragic, like Travis Bickle.
I wouldn't call Patrick an antihero. He's a murderous psychopath, and hasn't exactly done good. The Punisher is an antihero. Patrick is just a murderer.
I believe there are more classifications to an anti-hero than, ultimately, whether they do good or not. Lou Bloom and Patrick Bateman are obsessively high-functioning, morally corrupt anti-heroes. Travis Bickle can be called a tragic anti-hero rather than a morally corrupt one. This use of 'anti-heroes' is also in tune with them being the central character of a film.
I tend to agree. Patrick Bale is the protagonist of the story but that doesn't make him an anti-hero. The anti-hero must still have some characteristics of the hero. And there must be a possibility of redemption. So the protagonists like D-Fens, Michael Corleone, Scorsese's mobsters and so on. Are not anti-heroes. But we can't really call them bad guys because they aren't antagonists. I don't know if there is a name for an "evil protagonists"? Villain protagonist? On the other hand, the characters in Clint Eastwood's films (Gran Torino, Richard Jewell,...) are anti-heroes. Walter White begins as an anti-hero but gradually becomes a villain.
Proper title should be: "Video Essays and how they have fallen as a medium" This one is a great example of that.
eggers miles above are and peele
Incredible that A Streetcar was just presented as an honorable mention when it should be in Brando´s number 1 performance.
Excellent compilation!🩷
Thank you!
You forgot Colonel Kurtz.
13:47 No explanations 😂😂 lmao ,RRR is the biggest release in India in 2022,It came after Bahubali2 and even it was a huge success people still feel it is not bigger than Bahubali 2.Thats what Rajamouli said after Magadheera I have to lower people’s expectations so he did Maryada Ramanna an action Comedy good but not larger than life movie like his previous films
Last time he made a movie was around 2010.. crazy that he is retired..
me when paul dano. ((*))
'Tea house of the august moon ' was a great movie and terry malloy is the greatest portrayal in cinematic history ,last tango in paris do me a favour
Love & Mercy is hands down his best I think.
Great vid but background music a little distracting as it's a bit loud :)
Timothee Chalamet’s best performance is as “Timothee Chalamet” the sensitive, feminist, articulate, intelligent, genuine New Yorker. He is after fame and fortune like every other Hollywood parasite. He claims to have donated his salary for a Woody Allen movie to a Women’s Rights organization but he lives with one of the most blatant anti-feminists in the country. Can you judge a man by his friends (Armie Hammer, the rapist cannibal) or the woman he lives with, a vacuous, talentless, soft porn, plastic, fraudulent influencer (Kylie Jenner)? Obviously yes!!
1. Last Tango in Paris 2. On the Waterfront 3. A Streetcar Named Desire 4. The Godfather 5. One Eyed Jacks 6. Apocalypse Now 7. Julius Caesar 8. A Dry White Season 9. The Missouri Breaks 10. The Freshman
DON JUAN DEMARCO, ESPECIALLY LOVED DANCE WITH FAYE DUNAWAY
