the Esync description is completely inaccurate, esync is just a more performant way to simulate the windows synchronization behavior, to help with performance issues in games that are heavily multi-threaded, but it is slightly inaccurate so they provide an option to disable it if it causes bugs

So the summary is: - Use a rolling release Distro or risk using development repos (Debian Sid or Fedora for example) - Competitve games are a nope because of aggressive anti-cheat - Ubisoft and EA games are a nope because of shitty DRM and/or their own platform launchers - Use protonDB to figure out appropriate launch parameters for a better experience What I would like to add is: - DLSS3 is (still) not supported (proton is working on its implementation but it's still not fully working for all games like No Man's Sky)

I left Windows less than a week ago. I've been using Garuda Linux (Arch based). It's been a great experience. At first, I had the pull to go back to windows because things just work ootb. I couldn't get my xbox one controller working with the dongle. The master branch (xone?) wasn't working. The fix is deep in the comment section to use a different repo. Then Cities Skylines stopped working. I checked it the next morning but it worked. Then that night it didnt' work again. Turns out that "night light" being on is why it worked in the morning and not the night. It really shouldn't have been an issue but it's figured out now. Lots of little things like this to get things really working. I have corsair products and found CKB, which is great, but doesn't automatically switch profiles like ICue does. Some things are sacrifices, but other things work better. My sleep macro works much better in linux, for example. So far, my 1070ti hasn't been an issue yet but I'm just getting started so I'm sure I'll need to come back to this video in the future as I add more games

    • @Trafotin
      @Trafotin День назад

If you left Windows less than a week ago, I am sorry this has been your experience, but I strongly recommend getting off Garuda and moving to something like Bazzite instead. You don't need to use Garuda to play games and Bazzite is a lot less painful and better suited if you are new to Linux.

@@Trafotin It's all working well now. It wasn't the night light. I'm not really sure what it was. I was inspired to switch after setting up 5 raspberry pis multiple times each I'm running qbittorrent, openvpn, arr's, pi-hole/unbound, jellyfin, zoneminder, home assistant on them. 4 of them are headless. So, I am kinda new but I kinda know how to get things going and am a glutton for punishment lol The pi-hole is what really pushed me to switch. After seeing Microsoft trying relentlessly to access my network, I had enough. After being blocked like that for a couple of weeks, they text saying someone is possibly trying to use my account and I have to go click on stuff to stop them from locking my account. What a pain, especially if they were to actually lock me out. Thanks for the tip tho. If I hit a wall down the road, I do have Bazzite on my radar

ProtonUp-Qt is not run by Bazzite's or Valve's devs. They include it because it's a useful way to troubleshoot issues and so people can play as many games as possible. And that icon in the system tray? That's updates for the Steam Deck, which also apply automatically.

2 cents? Use GNOME. I have had more bugs and issues related to NVIDIA come out of KDE, save for a spell last year where I switched to KDE twice last year because of odd bugs in Fedora and libadwaita. Those have been fixed now and NVIDIA is just less polished on KDE. There's also an issue where monitors are forced to be your lowest possible refresh rate, so I have 144 and 60 Hz monitors, and all of my games are forced into 60 FPS vsync on KDE.

Doesn't support Secure Boot because Nobara uses custom kernel drivers to improve gaming performance, which causes problems because they need to be signed with DKMS. Funnily enough I seem to be using KDE Plasma the "GNOME way", since I have found interacting with virtual desktops through Plasma's new-ish workspaces overview. I can't stand base Gnome, since the default theme's padding is way too much for comfortably reaching hitboxes and makes the screenspace feel extremely cramped. Even on my smaller laptop, where I increased the font size and with it the scaling and padding a it, Gnome is too large and space in. The lack of minimise and maximise buttons is inexcusable still. I barely use them, since I mostly use the shortcuts or mouse drags, but at times the explicit click is nicer. Both the massive list of virtual desktops and open windows is way too messy, it's comical how long it's taking you to alt-tab in the given example. I am torn between doing a similar thing with the application launcher (dock) or separating apps over desktops, but even in the former case the compacter layout makes mouse based navigation quicker. So I will not "give Gnome a good 'ol whirl" since I have tried it before but found that KDE Plasma is able to do everything I want from it better. This includes use with a drawing tablets, where the excessive padding makes the hitboxes especially awkward, too large for accurate wrist motions yet too small for arm movements. I've even gone further and went on a libadwaita app purge on my systems, for these design issues. There were more things that bothered me, but the final straw was the Authenticator app having the main button activate when missing the copy button, causing it to show a large QR code with the 2FA key. I've gone on a bit of a rant here, but this stems from Gnome and libadwaita software making my PC experience worse when I use it, despite having taken and applied many of it's concepts elsewhere.

I wouldn't say not to use Nobara. Yes they replaced selinux with AppArmour but so does Ubuntu and openSUSE, it's not like it's a super massive security flaw, SElinux is better yes but using AppArmour is not as big of an issue as its made out to be, as for secure boot, most distros don't support Secure boot to my knowledge it's only Fedora, Ubuntu, openSUSE and rhel that support it out of the box and most distros advise against enrolling your own keys. Rolling releases are also not required for gaming, Debian is ridiculously out of date, Ubuntu is not (it uses Debian testing as a base), unless you have incredibly new hardware then you don't need a rolling release, the distro you recommend, bazzite is not rolling release, it just moves a little faster. I can agree with telling new users to avoid arch (and Manjaro in general)

Strongly advising against Ubuntu / Debian based distros for gaming might be a little harsh. At least from my experience most games just work day one without any noticeable issues, could've gotten very lucky with the games i played of course. Still the likelihood of a linux newbie figuring out manual driver updates or them just waiting it out is more likely then having them deal with potential rolling release issues imo. That aside neither Fedora or Bazzite are rolling releases for all i know so uh odd choice going by your own advice. Don't get me wrong here Bazzite is no doubt a solid gaming distro. For AppArmor vs. SELinux idk if that actually matters for the average gamer. If either one of them works, great, if not they are probably not gonna get it fixed anyways. SELinux is preferable imo but same time AppArmor is less of a struggle if intervention is required and could therefore end up safer'ish more easily if actually dealt with.

I've haven't tried CachyOS myself yet as I've heard a fair amount of complaints about its performance, booting issues, hardware compatibility and failed installations so i would highly recommend additional research. I myself aren't particularly bound to a single distro atm. Having a x670E Gene as my MB makes swapping drives with different installs very fast and effortless so i make plenty use of it. The ones i frequent the most are Mint as most used, Fedora and Arch for more specific needs, PopOS for keeping an eye on Cosmic and very occasionally Windows for stuff that at least currently cannot be archived under Linux. Before i get into what i currently play have a short list of my hardware, 7800x3D, 7900 XTX, 2x16GB 6000MT/s Cl30, 2TB 990 Pro with Mint. Although i mainly rely on Mint for everyday use i usually go for either Fedora or Arch if i feel like I'm missing out out performance i should be getting or actually require newer drivers. More than often enough using the right version of Proton / GE and or other tweaks is more important than the distro / drivers used. Other compatibility layers and games that offer native Linux support will likely wield different results. The last demanding game I actually played at release is actually already older than i anticipated. Ghost of Tsushima, i also compared it against Windows and actually ended up with a slightly better performance on Mint, PlayStation login / multiplayer hasn't been available via proton at launch but had been accessible by logging in over windows and that carried over... so some workarounds where needed for full functionality. That aside i mainly play soukslikes like the Dark Souls trilogy, Lies of P, Elden Ring, some RTS with the different Supreme Commander entries and Star Wars Empire at War, some shooters: Armored Core 6, Heroes of Valor and also some more relaxing games like Stardew Valley and Celeste. One solid advice i can give is checking if your desired distro plays nicely with your hardware beyond the surface. As example people often forget the importance of stuff like checking if Rebar is actually enabled and set at a reasonable size. If Rebar has a positive effect or non at all can of course vary on a bunch of different factors.

I've only tried CachyOS-deck on my Rog Ally and on an old Thinkpad. It's very fast to install. I had issues so I did not use it for long, a few hours. Arch is great if your time is worthless. I never had time for it. "The Ubuntu's" are great, used them for almost nine years. Not great if you want new stuff. I want the new RX 9070 XT (if it's good).

@@GottKrampf Saying to avoid Arch-based distros in favor of Arch is bad advice for a new user. The amount of tweaking you have to do to Arch to get anywhere near CachyOS is ridiculous, and comes with next to no benefit besides learning. Think about how daunting that would be to a new user who just wants to get rid of Windows and have their games work: a great way to scare someone away from Linux. I've been on Linux exclusively for over a decade, used just about every common Debian-based distro, Manjaro, Arch, NixOS and many more. CachyOS is one of the only distros that feels good for gaming out of the box and it's still very lightweight compared to a lot of "just works" distros. Performance on Fedora is awful, Debian has old drivers, Arch & Nix take a lot of tweaking, Manjaro is unstable. Cachy comes out of the box with the drivers you need, configured themes, a high-performance kernel and a few tools to play with your system sans-CLI. Even though I have no issues configuring Arch, Cachy is my #1 gaming distro. Nix will continue taking the spot on all my other machines though

Please don't actually rebase bazzite from gnome to kde or vice versa. It will mess with your user config files and cause unexpected issues down the road. Make a fresh user first and then rebase and use that new user for that new DE.

@@PengWingAtomic It is fine if you rebase within the same DE, Vanilla Fedora Kinoite -> Aurora -> Bazzite (KDE) etc. So deck image to non-deck image with the same DE is also ok.

This is half-true. I have moved fairly seamlessly between the 2 with no discernible issues aside from the NVIDIA related ones. The process is exactly the same on normal distros and absolutely nothing to do with atomic desktops.

Back when I first started Linux. The Linux community used to be so chill. Now it's toxic af. I use Arch btw. But just because I use Arch im willing to help people with Linux. Including Arch however I only have a limited time to help people. Toxicity takes more time than being nice.

The process is simple enough, but the partitioning involved in setting up a dual boot system is a nightmare. Alpine out of the box doesn't even recognize existing partitions, it only perceives the drive as a single block. I love Alpine, but run it in a container because of the desktop installation issues. I know these issues can be overcome, but it isn't trivial.

One of the best tutorial tech videos I have seen. Easy to understand commands (and not at GHz speed like many videos out there), very good use of animation (so I do NOT have to see the 500lb snot nosed nerd in their mother's basement), good use of the screencast facility. Who needs full studio style YT vid production? KUDOS.
