I actually gave Gnome a try and went back to KDE only for me to be missing how easy it was for me to open apps and not have to remember which Desktop a particular app is. I finally made the switch and I'm much happier. 🥰 The extension that shows the name of the app you're currently using, what is it called? I need that to complete my switch. When I work at my desk, I organize my pens and supplies in cases and drawers, and I store my documents in folders as well. I don’t leave everything scattered on the desk, nor do I switch desks when I need to perform a different task. The Gnome approach is terribly counterintuitive and the reason why Linux has fallen so far behind other operating systems in adoption. Stubbornness is not a virtue.

I got to the manjaro part and just though who the hell uses manjaro. I started on manjaro and borked it instantly. If you want a easy rolling release distro use opensuse tumbleweed. Also i like arco linuxes config files for i3/sway. It was a great base for me to start my window manager customizations

You have no idea how happy your review made me. I got an unexpected but very much wanted proof that you can run DaVinci Resolve on Leenux. I been using it on an old Mac I have, and fell in love with that editor (though I hate with a passion it does not accept WEBM video as source..... and perhaps h265 MP4?). Something I've been worried about is now gone. Another thing is of course honesty. Though I will probably never be on the receiving end of those flaws. My perfect screen is a matte 144 RGB 1080p. I only wish when I pull the trigger, they still have a 17 inch model with such a screen.

I used gnome. The workflow is nice, but it needs too many extensions to have the functionality that I expect out of the box from a DE. I switched to KDE6 and it’s been amazing. A few things could be better but atleast I don’t have to hunt for extensions for some basic functionality. Gnome developers have a really good product, but for some reason, they are hell bent on making it worse🤦‍♂️

The only thing I use LLMs for are unhinged text adventures. I recently had one where eating Yog-Sothoth teriyaki style lead to the creation of a flavor-based hierarchy throughout the eldritch realms. In this new hierarchy flavors and textures take precedence over traditional concepts like power or knowledge. It's been a wild ride. If I require that amount of brain rot on a phone I could just install TikTok instead.

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed runs great on my 2011 HP 8200 Elite SFF with a 1050 ti, 20 GB of RAM, and an i5-2400, including with Wayland on the 555 Nvidia driver. It's not my main machine but sadly my Acer Nitro 5 which is a whole decade newer gets static shutdowns when I use Linux on it so I have to perform a power drain, especially on the Windows SSD but the second instance was so bad that the laptop would even hard shutdown on the Linux SSD. For that reason, the laptop runs Windows 11 and the old desktop runs Linux. I am very excited to build a beefy new AMD system and put Linux on that.

I have the same Mac and I installed Debian 12 on it. It works very well. I previously checked Fedora 40, but there was a problem with the Wi-Fi card driver. Mac did not see any network.

nice to see "the code book" it's a good read, and if you're a massive nerd it's pretty fun to work through the excercises. i verify downloads, at least for large files, because i do things a bit odd. i split up the file with curl using the range option and download it in multiple parts, then reassemble it with cat, and check the hash. if something goes wrong it's usually obvious which chunk caused it, and it's nice to download like 100MB instead of several GB

On linux, if using KDE, or just Dolphin for that matter, you can right click the file and select properties, click on tab "Checksums", paste the expected checksum in a field and just click the algorithm button you want. :)
