Is This The End For Entry-level Software Engineers? | Current Software Engineer Market Trend
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 месяца назад
Tech layoffs continue, and what does it tell us about the market? Seniority levels can be confusing. In big tech, 'senior' typically refers to someone with 5 years of experience (YOE), but at smaller companies, it could be as low as 2 YOE. Additionally, many companies don't offer dedicated mid-level roles, creating a gap between junior and senior positions. Layoff tracker: layoffs.fyi/ Entry le...

In 2023 Google laid off around 2,600 software engineers. They have 182,502 full time employees in 2024. everyone else that was laid off was non engineer roles. A lot of the layoffs had way more to do with interest rates being high than anything else. Companies like Google and Facebook are still investing in their future and this means they need cash. Borrowing right now is not an option so the easiest fastest way to create liquidity is by laying people off. Consumers may be traveling but they are still spending online, booking their hotels online, booking their flights online, posting their pictures of their trip online, paying for their meals in person from a wallet app while the POS system was created and maintained by a dev from somewhere like square. Everything is programming. Everything. Right now the positions could start to devalue due to people getting desperate. I ended up shifting into digital marketing in the meantime but would much rather start my own business than take less money for the same job. I would actually even take less money for a different job not related to SE.

I think it was about these retard CEOs wanting people back in the office. Ive noticed this too in the past. You see people who graduated from college and their first job is "director" or "senior". I think these people just understood the game. It doesnt pay to be honest in this world. You have to lie about some things that you CAN control. Im not going to lie that I can do python, or Java because I dont do those. I do React, Next, and Javascript these days. But libraries, or other small silly things that really shouldnt be on a job description. SURE, I know PWA stuff and yeah I did it in my last job blah blah blah. Lies.

Software Engineers is changing, AI will take over more and more of the grunt work, there may be less entry level roles going around because one programmer who knows how to utilise AI prompts can produce the output of five people a few years back. The industry will start to shift, creativity and problem solving will be valued more than technical proficiency, there may be fewer overall roles but with much higher productivity, the salary will go up a lot for those who makes it in the field.

I got my 1st job ever in august 2022, a Java developer internship. I had a civil contract for half a year, so it was ending in the middle of february 2023. Pay wasn't great but well, it's totally expected on an internship. The people were great tho, and my mentors were very good teachers. Since the company I worked for was purely an outsourcing company for tech giants - most of which had massive layoffs around february/march that year, we all found out 3 days before end of our contracts, that none of us will be offered a position in the company. Of course I started seeking new job instantly, applying for a couple of offers each day, but nobody wanted me. Month after month I was losing hope, daily applying for new positions was a routine like washing teeth for me at this point. I started tutoring math again to have at least some money, but if it wasn't for my absolutely amazing girlfriend who supported me, I would've been forced to move back with my parents. Finally, after almost 5 months of unemployment, I landed a junior position in another place - it was also an outsourcing company, but I received an employment contract for an indefinite period this time, so my fear went away. Pay was also decent, almost twice what I was making on the internship before. Though I was beyond grateful for having a job, I had my fears since the first 6 weeks were a programming bootcamp from scratch, where I didn't really learn anything new. After the training we joined our company's client and after 6 months, I can say it's an absolutely awful experience - no code reviews, all the team cares about is speed. There are very few people on the team who genuinely care about the quality of their work, but you can probably imagine the frustration of being in the crushing minority of people who care about something. Task descriptions are vague, finding out what are you even supposed to do usually takes about a week. There is no automatic tests, and for manual tests we are not even given a scenario, we always have to figure it out on our own. The way git is used is also beyond frustrating - due to lack of pull requests and very chaotic flow, most branches are so out of sync, that any merge takes half a day to figure out. How do we merge without pull request you might ask? You just merge locally and push onto the target branch - yep, including master, nope, there is no branch protection rules in place. What if something goes wrong you might ask? Well, you usually find out in the middle of the next sprint, when you thought your previous task was closed long ago. I've suggested improvements to the way we work on each retro, to no avail. I started feeling burnt out - which is terrifying, given I'm not even 23 yet. One day, I got a message on LinkedIn, and I thought why the hell not, let's get out of this place. I don't know why, but suddenly some more recruiters started texting me on LI. Let me be honest with you - I didn't refuse any single interview. And recently, I finally made it! Even though I've never touched Kotlin before, and did all the technical interviews in Java, I've been offered to get trained and start a Kotlin developer position. More remote work allowed, better benefits, team seems awesome (pretty long interview process was scary at first, but opportunity to get to know 3-4 people from the time was very nice). And last but not least, they offered me more than double what I make now. The position is starting in june tho, so now I just need to endure the last 3 months here. I'm not sure why I shared all of this, probably a mix of wanting to blow off some steam about my current job and wanting to let y'all know that you are not alone in the struggle. Just do what you do best, don't give up, and always keep looking for new job offers. Don't lose hope and focus on becoming a better engineer each day, and eventually your dream job will find you :)

I quit my business to career change amidst this awful market. I think in the end it's really about confidence and grit. I know that as long as i put in 50 hours study weeks for a long period of time, I will outperform the average developers in the long run. People get stagnant when they have a job, but if you have grit to continue learning even when you're comfortable, you'll do well.

I'm 41-years old and have been struggling to find an entry-level job for the last year and a half in software development. It has been difficult to even get an interview. I'm currently in a JAVA/AWS training program for a consulting company, but it doesn't seem this will pan out as much as I thought it would. I've developed and improved my skills in Java/Spring/Spring Boot/Spring Security/Angular/Thymeleaf/Httpservlets and JSP/ORM/Hibernates/HTML/CSS. But even with all of this, I don't hold much hope as we are done training in a week and I feel like we've only brushed surface level on each subject matter. For those that can't secure an internship because we are not in school and apprenticeships seem to not exist anymore (ex. IBM), what would you suggest? And what fields can I go into with my current skills and hopefully land a job with a tech company? I've looked at Help Desk jobs, but those require certifications and some even are requiring past experience. I feel like I've invested so much time, effort and money into this goal, but it may never pan out. And it scares me to death each day.

Hi, Luca I graduated a while ago and have a Software Engineering Bachelors Degree. However, I pursued my music career right after graduating. Moved to LA and actually have had success working with major artists in the last few years. As I've grown older, I kind of lost the passion for music. More so the business side of it. Thank you for sharing and watching! It sounds like creativity is your passion. Have you ever considered UX design roles? Some of the best UX designers I have worked with all have tech backgrounds (Coding) Modern tools such as figma also favor people who are familiar with CSS etc. I would say def do what you enjoy! Ofc there're software roles such as gaming design or more creative jobs but def don't just settle for any because you probably won't enjoy it in the long term. Hope this helps

I get a feeling that in a couple years people will realize how this God-like Chat GPT will not be as effective as people think- just how Target is removing their self scan A.i registrars. Sure its good to come up with movie scripts and 3-D images but that's about it.

Electrical engineering went through something similar in the 80s... it was super hot and then it just stabilized to a good paying field. Markets change, that's just reality.

For right now - i think everyone needs to become familiar with AI and howto use it. As a DevOps Engineer - you are sitll going to need folks that can depoy models, ensure they are running, ensure that systems that power them are running properly etc. But nothing in the future is certain as AI gets more advanced - we will shift from writing code from the ground up - to simply validating the viability of the code a model presents. TLDR - become an AI Engineer, Data Scientist, ML Engineer etc.
