Ottawa Swordplay
Добавлен 27 фев 2011
Ottawa Swordplay is a historical martial arts school based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. We teach a system of swordplay based on the teachings of a medieval swordmaster named Johannes Liechtenauer, who lived in the 14th century in what is now Germany. Liechtenauer developed a complete system of fighting for the knightly classes, which included how to fight with the spear, sword, knife and dagger, and wrestling. The longsword, or sword for two hands, was the central weapon of Liechtenauer’s system, so that is the first weapon we teach.
Our curriculum is based on research and interpretation of primary sources. Our core source for the longsword is the Jud Lew Fechtbuch, closely supported by the Ringeck and Von Danzig manuscripts. Our core source for the sword in one hand is Johannes Lecküchner’s Kunst des Messerfechtens. Other core sources include the Gladiatoria series for armoured combat, the works of Ott Jud for wrestling, and the Walpurgis Fechtbuch for sword and buckler.

How to prevent getting stabbed under the neck? My 9 year old was stabbed in the jaw under the mask.
Get a gorget
Many thanks for this class. The follow along format with keywords is excellent - love it! From all of us far from an urban club - Thank you!
Socks difference
I really enjoyed my 5 lessons with you guys. But I am now back in northern Alberta and wishing I had someone to practice with. Thanks to all the instructors, they were all very gracious.
it's interesting that you are teaching about Johannes Liechtenauer, but how about Joachim Meyer? I am mostly focus on his things, maybe a little bit about Fiore as well
Awesome sword, and socks! :)
Thanks Marla!
I like your mask in the wall, It is pretty beautiful
Thank you! It makes for easy access for students for our rental masks.
This film looks amazing
Congratulations and check your email - you're our second winner! Enjoy the show :)
I’ve been so hyped for this film since I first saw the announcement trailer, and I’m also excited to hopefully be starting some lessons with you soon! Thanks for doing this giveaway.
Me too! Hope to see you in the Sword Hall soon - with your head firmly attached ;)
Congratulations and check your email - you're our third and final winner!
I read the green knight for the first time last year, one of my favourite tales of the set we were given to read.
Movie tickets? I love the idea! It is on my to-watch list!
Looks like this will be a great movie to kick off going back to the cinemas since the pandemic started for myself
My thoughts exactly!
A great story and looks like a very exciting film. Will certainly be practicing at the hall in case any mystery knights show up to dinner.
We've decided to postpone the event until the fall so we can do this in person with spectators! Please keep sending in your ideas!
Happy birthday, Craig! I've submitted the survey as well, but I'd love to see you with a longsword face-off against a left-handed, longsword-wielding opponent in a variety of scenarios (defending, attacking, in the bind, etc!)
Great idea!
With regards to balance, where on your feet do you like to keep your weight? Personally, especially with the rotational movement involved in the hip engagement and leaf and triangle steps, I find that driving my weight through the ball of the foot is easier on the knees and the back.
Great question! In my experience, it varies person to person - some people are fully on the balls of their feet with little to no weight on the heels, whereas I personally am split and still have about a third of my weight back on my heels until I rotate for a step. But as they say in the manuscripts, the market will teach you, so do what works best for you. As long as you can easily rotate on the balls of your feet as part of your steps and overall are balanced, you should be good.
Thanks for posting these videos, really excited to check you guys out when lockdown lifts!
Can't wait to have you join us! We're starting some indoor classes in August, and have outdoor ones as well.
Amazing! Your dedication, hard work and obvious love for the art are incredible!
Wow. You all did a great job.
Thank you! We can't wait to have students back in the hall to use it.
Definitely more spacious. Looks very nice!
It's amazing how much bigger it feels with that small storage room removed.
Matthew told me today that the hall is starting to look good. It is.
Thank you! We are very excited to have people visit it soon.
How old do you have to be to join?
We have kids classes for 8 and up, and our adult program is for 12 and up. Teens 12-15 can choose either the kids' or adults' program depending on which suits them best.
It WAS useful, and very much appreciated! Great series!
Great to hear!
One of my favorites when you add the sheet fold in there
That guy is too much cute ;' of course I ain't gay
Interesting- I can't wait for COVID to pass so I can give place a try!
Same here! We can't wait to welcome students back into the hall :)
Looks awesome! cant wait to come back
Us too!
It’s beautiful! You’ve put so much into it, congratulations!
Thank you so much!
Looking good.
Thanks 👍
Looking great. I really can't wait to come back in!
Us too!
Unfortunately, the sound in this one is really poor. The speaker is too far from the mic and the low volume plus echo makes it very, very difficult to understand.
Thanks! We're looking into better microphone solutions, hopefully we can improve it soon.
Great work guys. Keep.them coming
They can't have my spear either lol!
Hahaha nice low tech solution to keep buckler on belt.
Oh damn look at all the flooring! Excited for when you guys open again
Makes me wish I still had access to a work shop.
Excellent idea. I shall have to make one myself. If you place a 12" disk in behind the arm and drill a series of holes around it's circumference you will be able to pin the arm at whatever angle you would like.
Let us know how it goes if you do make one! That is a great upgrade idea.
@@OttawaSwordplay I made one...sent pictures and video to John Enzinas so he can post them for you
In hindsight, I probably should have tucked the strings from my hood inside. That's clearly an accident waiting to happen.
I was having trouble grasping this move, especially the offline version, but it seems I was just thinking too hard about.
Got my wooden practice sword in the mail! Going to start classes this weekend, thanks so much for posting these.
Many thanks for showing this, I will try it. Which sources is it based on, or is it an own interpretation? Does it work in full-speed sparring? If I may make one suggestion, it's perhaps good to tuck the elbows closer to the body in vom Tag so they don't get sniped :)
Hi thanks for watching! Yes, this works well at full speed sparring, and it's based on Liechtenauer's fencing tradition and sources. This is a pretty old video, check out this recent one for more details on the 5th winding: ruclips.net/video/AbgAThXZCb0/видео.html .
Very interested in your rules. I like the idea of encouraging defensive offense.
Literally all the plays from Fiores Longsword (except perhaps 1) start from the bind - so Fiore does not avoid it. Fiores plays are determined by the bind situation. The blade binds in the manual are symetrical and normally show the master with the left foot forward. These two are just facts. Now comes the pure opinion part. Fiore will just use his strikes after which there are two possibilities - you are dead, which is great or you are not in which case you are bound. The left foot forward to me implies that he will let you advance and prefers to counterstrike. Stepping with the strike which turns into a holy law with some people that do Liechtenauer seems not so important to him. Fiores blades seem to be slightly shorter than Feders or later longswords and he is a grappler these two factors actually make him what he is.
My first caveat on Fiore is always that I'm not a Fiore guy. Anything I say about him is based on what I've been told by Fiorists, so I'm not in a position to discuss Fiore in depth.
Second camera view starts at 3:30. : )
So if you wanted a reply you could at least name the folia you are referring to. Not that you have ever replied to anything written in the comments, all the while "inviting participation". Zornhau is 7r to 14r. Lehmstück is 184r and is explicitly not part of the Zornhau play. 4r and 4 v are counters to the Zornhau Ort. 5r does explicitly not mention any of the plays in 4 t or v so it is not the counter counter but simply the continuation from further displacement. Are you considering 5r the counter counter? Why? Everywhere else he explicity will mention that this is a counter to something ( look 4r and 4 v). If your bind happens in your weak angainst the middle of his blade all the winding in the world will not gain you an advantage. I consider this the irrefutable measure for the Zorn plays.
Hey, I took a quick look and I admit that I conflated the response to the abnemen on 7v (Munich version I) with the strike to the right on 5r. That's due to my preference, but it doesn't change that if your opponent becomes aware, you are supposed to change your point through and engage on the other side. This immediately follows the counters or 4r (cut the wrist, which is what I am trying to counter) and 4v (stab him as he closes), and that's really the entirety of what I am talking about. If I "wind again to his left" and he goes for the wrist cut, if he can reach my wrist without stepping, I cannot change the point through fast enough to protect my wrist, regardless of what follow up I then do. Everything is from 3v-5r, with an unneccessary Wecker thrown in because I really like them.
This dude looking spoiled...
Obligatory swordplay Dog.
i find einselstuck neither on wiktenauer nor on grimms deutsches wörterbuch, so in case it is your own creation and not a quote from a source might i suggest to use the german word Einzel.
