Photographing the Winter Commute - Evening Rush Hour Shoot with Canon 5Dii dSLR - Manchester, UK
A first look at my ongoing project looking at the "in-between time" that divides work from home, featuring still images and POV video.

Can I Shoot the First Snow Day of Winter 2024 in the Peak with ONLY my SLR's Basic 50mm Lens?

I take my camera on a whistle-stop tour of New Mills and the surrounding hills on the first day of snow in England's North West. Will I get any decent shots with a single roll of Colorplus film using just a 50mm lens? What’s the photoshop processor?? :)
Hi, thanks for asking....I've changed it a bit since I shot this video, but I think at the time I was using this action that I'd created... CAMERA RAW FILTER process version: 6 exposure 2012: 1.95 contrast 2012: -9 texture: 10 clarity 2012: 10 sharpen amount: 40 sharpen radius: 1 sharpen detail: 25 sharpen masking: 0 color noise reduction: 25 color noise detail 50 color noise smoothness: 50 transform distortion: 8 invert ...hope that helps a little? As I say, I've improved my process since, and there is another video about my new workflow on the channel. Cheers🙂
Held one of these at thrift shop. They wanted $5 but I couldn't bring myself to buy something that I can't get film developed. It was a hefty piece of kit.
Yes, I've still got my "new" roll of B&W 8mm to shoot, but I can't face the cost of the processing at the moment...I'm holding out for a can't miss opportunity to use it, and until then the camera makes a lovely ornament! Thanks for watching, and have a great week 🙂
Hello Ed, captivating work. You’ve caught the feeling and mood excellently in the morning’s bustle. I particularly like the colours of the 5d mkii here and also from one of your previous videos on night photography, using the same setup. Were any adjustments made to WB during the shoot?
Many thanks! Have a great day 🙂
Very enjoyable. Thanks.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Loved those shots, used to work at the MRI years ago
Thanks Steve. Ah, so you'll recognise a lot of the places...glad you liked it. Have a good day 🙂
@@studioswinden used to commute from disley into piccadilly station by train. Both fond and not so fond memories were had there. Keep up the good work 👏
Thank you for the video! Now I have no choice but to take my camera and go outside RIGHT NOW :)
Great...have fun! 🙂
Nice, agree with your comment on the wet weather adding a lot to these images.
Thanks - I hate the rain, but it does make things pretty sometimes! 👍
did you reset the date on the back? My old T90 had that but it was an optional back called a "command back", which added the date and intervalometer functions. Looking back at my old photos now I find the imprinted date very useful for remembering when I took them.
Yes, I think so. I usually have it turned off as I don't want any info burned into the negative, but sometimes I use it if the date stamp is really important...like a birthday souvenir picture or something. It's good that the date goes all the way up to the present...there are some cameras where the date won't go beyond the Noughties....I gues they thought we'd never get so far into the future! 😂
B&W film photography is so much easier and cheaper to process and print in a home darkroom too. At my age it seems more natural for me having grown up with B&W post cards, photographs, TV and movies.
It is. I've never tried C41 process myself, but from what I can tell it's tricker and more costly too! Thanks for watching 🙂
Tunes ?😉
Ha...thanks for asking! 😉 If I remember now it was a mixture of tracks by The National, the new Cure album, Yard Act and Blossoms...don't hold it against me! Have a great week. Ed 🙂
Thanks for the video. Getting tired of all these photographers telling everyone to always use wide angle and to be very close to the subject. Just do whatever works for you to get good photos! * grabs his 1000mm reflex lens *
Thanks! 😂
Really enjoyed this video Ed. The Plan A and B angle was spot on. An essential consideration to avoid disappointment. New Mills was a great choice, for the reasons you say. Enjoyed seeing the results from the ColorPlus and your EOS 620. I’ve recently purchased an EOS 650, which I imagine will produce similar results, but I’m yet to use it. Really enjoyed seeing your images and hearing your thoughts (always really appreciate that aspect of your videos!) and I completely agree regarding the Parkland Ave picture. It’s a gem. Thanks for your time, effort and thoughts. ATB, Paul
Thanks so much - that’s very nice to hear. I think the EOS 650 should be pretty similar to the 620...if I remember right the one you have was the very first EF Canon andcwas closely followed by the 620. I find the AF a bit frustrating (but it was the early days!) and it’s quite a noisy machine, but lovely results and I can use all my EF lenses with it, which is great. Have a great week, and I hope you get some good shots with your Canon 🙂
Great photos, thanks for getting out in the cold and making this video.
Glad you enjoyed it...I enjoyed making it! Have a great week. Ed 🙂
fantastic work and analysis - I've been almost exclusively using telephoto lenses anywhere from between 70 to 180mm on my Fuji body for street photography, nothing beats it when trying to paint more geometric and abstract compositions. Depending on the DOF chosen, either one can entirely isolate or meld the subject with the world around it. Great stuff!
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. Glad the video was helpful! 🙂
thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching 🙂
Why no Chinese budget alternatives in 70-200mm for any brands?
I don't know much about what lens alternatives are available for SLRs anymore as I've not been in the market for one in years, but if you're looking for budget options with a wide aperture then one thing that could be worth considering is a well-preserved secondhand manual focus one with an adapter to convert it...it might not work for all cameras, but you might get a brighter image than with a more modern budget alternative...a new budget lens (if available) is likely to have a much smaller maximum aperture and so the shallow depth of field and ability to use high shutter speeds is lost to a large degree. I've seen a pre-owned Tamron AF 70-300 for sale online at around £100 but it has an f4-5.6 aperture. Alternatively a fast prime might be an idea? They can be pricey too, but their less complex than zooms so tend to be slightly cheaper. Happy hunting! And thanks for watching 🙂
The longer lens is a great choice for isolating subjects and compression of perspective. I use a 70-200 as a choice for landscape & seascape - great to have the ability to pick out details in a wide scene. And thanks for the frame-in-a-frame examples.
Thanks again. Would be great to see some of your sea and landscapes...do you have any online? Have a great week. Ed 🙂
This is very interesting Ed and I like your comment about no point in making pictures if nobody ever sees them. I feel the same way about digital photography, so many folks photos just live on their hard drives and no one ever sees them. They should be printed big and on display somewhere even if your own walls. A photographer once said, (can't remember who), that a picture doesn't exist if no one ever sees it.
Thanks Paul. I certainly respect those who prefer not to share their images, but personally it means a lot to me to share my work and (hopefully) leave a lasting legacy... Thanks again for watching and commenting. Have a good week 🙂
Interesting video - been considering picking up an Ixus for fun, but have been put off by the roulette of APS film availability. Having seen this I may be tempted as it’s relatively inexpensive and can be compared to the lo-fi expectations of Lomo photography. Thanks again for such varied and informative content, Ed.
Thanks again for watching and continuing to comment. I'd definitely recommend giving APS a try with something that isn't "mission critical". It is a fun format, and I think overall my results were (at least to my eyes) better with it than with 110 or 126 film. Though it is horses for courses...there was a shot I got on 110 that I think wouldn't have worked better on any other film/camera. It was just the right combo for the job. Have a great week. Ed 🙂
I have been sorting and scanning loads of old colour negatives recently. I bought an Epson V550 scanner a few years which came with an illuminated lid and film masks. I originally only bought it for scanning documents but now find the other features very handy, I am very impressed with the scans of film especially being able to control the resolution and colour bit depth.
Thanks for sharing your experience...I used a flat bed with inserts a long, long time ago (probably the early 2000s) but my scanner was pretty budget and the results weren't great so I ended up buying a dedicated film scanner, which was a bit better, though more time-consuming to use. I really like using a dSLR now for digitising my negatives as RAW (14 bit) files...though I wish I had a proper copy stand to ensure it was always completely perpendicular...and a decent macro lens. I think the extension tubes add softness to the edges of the scans unless I only use the central portion of the lens...which makes the scans much lower resolution. Whatever works for the job is the right thing, I guess. Cheers 🙂
I see your point on altering photos. I understand your position, and it's a fine take. Not to sound too harsh though, I think looking at photography in such a strict way forgets a key part of it.... Photography is art, and an artist shouldn't be restricted to a single linear thought process... Artists should be able to spread their wings, and soar. I understand of course, photography can be used to document, to memorialize... but that's not all it is. Edit your photos if you want, dodge and burn, use colored filters, create your art the way you want. Develop film, play around in the darkroom. Otherwise, lovely explanation on the use of a ND filter to lengthen the exposure to hide people and moving objects, or distractions. It would save a lot of people, a lot of time to invest in good, color neutral ND filters.
Thanks Anthony. I completely respect your point of view. I struggle a lot with deciding at what point the art of photography becomes a different kind of art, and my own early portrait work is full of collage, filters, etc. I think the argument to change a photo to make it more aesthetically pleasing or convey a different message can sometimes be justified, but I still think that it can be a slippery slope in some situations. Thanks again for watching and commenting. Good to hear your take 🙂
@@studioswinden When I first left photography in the 90's, packed away those point and shoots it wasn't that I disliked photography. It was because, at the time, I felt unfulfilled. No readily available resources outside of the library, or a class I could sit and study. Things that were sadly out of reach. Just getting to a library was an ordeal for me then. I think, personally what you, and many other photographers are doing here on this platform, internet forums is a incredible service to the community. I see photography in a whole new light these days, not only the raw beauty of capturing a slice of time, but also the worlds of creativity that you can unleash with just a little effort.
You present beautifully, it's like listening to a friend.
Thanks, that’s really nice to hear! Glad you enjoyed it. Have a good week 🙂
Absolutely brilliant. I agree with you entirely about not changing the photo you took and turning it into something you didn't. That might be great for 'influencers' on social media, but as a true record...not so good! So pleased to have found your channel. Nice camera, by the way.
Thanks so much! 🙂
Interesting technique with the ND filter to get rid of peds. I've never tried that, must do it sometime.
Thanks for watching 🙂
Hi Ed. Enjoyed the video and the aesthetic of the expired film. Good experiment of the little APS camera. I can’t see you trading in the XA2 just yet 😊
Thanks! No, certainly still think the XA2 is as close to perfect as I can find as a pocketable walkaround, though I do now think mine has a problem (film plane out of whack) as there's a lot of softness when there's low light...and it definitely isn't motion blur. Lucy's is way sharper. Might have to look out for a cheap replacement for mine...or "borrow" hers 😉. Have a good weekend. Ed 🙂
I really enjoyed this video, Ed. Great to see some old haunts from my university days (and I can vouch for DSCL myself) and you capturing images of the past before it disappears for good. I’ve never used APS so it was great to share your experience - something you always talk us through in an engaging, interesting and informative way. This is one of the real draws to your channel. Also I enjoy a dabble with expired film, so it was interesting to see how it went for you in the circumstances. I too wondered whether you suffered a light leak? I had such a problem with my Canon A-1 and although in hindsight it showed in the images, I didn’t realise at the time and thought it was just the expired film. I always find your videos so encouraging and inspiring. Best Wishes, Paul
Thanks Paul, that's really kind of you to say, and much appreciated. I must investigate that light leak! Have a great weekend. Ed 🙂
What was the small building with Alan Turing painted on the side about?
I'm not sure...I think it might be a toilet for the bus drivers to use as it's at the bus terminus...but I couldn't swear to it!
@@studioswinden Thanks Ed, that's a great shame to paint an image of Alan Turing on a toilet wall. I am sure that he is there because of his association with Manchester University. As a Computer Science graduate he is one of my heroes, (for his work that is, not his personal life).
Interesting Ed, I didn't know that you could get APS-C size film cameras or film. Also in the shot with discarded Costa cups on the table, the writing on the cigarette packet looks Arabic?
Thanks Paul. The packet is certainly not a UK one as I think they have to be completely plain nowadays...must be from overseas.
Can you reload the cartridge? I like using up single perf 16mm ortho cine film in an old 35mm manual rangefinder.
I don't think you can...the film has a special magnetic coating that the camera reads, odd perforations, and the canister itself is quite complicated by the looks of it. It's certainly beyond my technical abilities. That's the problem with "progress"...things become untweakable and unfixable without specialist equipment and proprietary parts. It's a shame, because the camera itself has potential. Thanks for watching 🙂
Thank you, i did have a aps camera years ago. Lost in the time warp. Interesting results seen from you
Thanks Steve. Have a good weekend 🙂
@studioswinden thank you just drove back from Scotland, now home in gloucestershire. Spent a week taking landscape photos.
Lovely! Hope you had a good time 🙂
@studioswinden yes it was lovely, but was a long way. Drove 1400 miles in one week. I must say I prefer north wales, snowdonia. We were there this time last year
Looks like a slight light leak in the lower parts of the frame. I shot with AGFA FUTURA, FUTURA II and STAR and got better results, so you might want to try those or FUJI. KONICA MINOLTA does not hold up as well, so you know.
Thanks, that's really interesting...where do you think the leak came from? The camera was "brand new" from what I could gather but would it be worth taping up around the film door next time I shoot with the IXUS? Or could the film have been fogged prior to me getting that? Thanks again, and thanks for watching 🙂
@@studioswinden It could be fogging too, somehow in the same lower corners, but when I used the Viewfinder Shutter on an older APSs camera I was using (I now have a CANON ELF that works nice) to block light from hitting the film when not in use, I got light leak on two shots that got to the edges of the frames. Since these cameras too have plastic parts, who knows what might be getting slightly separated or slightly off from slight decay inside where you cannot see. I did not know that would happen, but did that in the middle of non-use. Also, if you get original FUTURA, it is very hard to expose via its age and the way AGFA made it, so treat it as a daylight-only film and you'll get amazing results. Thanks for another great video!
Thanks for the extra info...I'll definitely bear it in mind 👍
I’ve got this camera and it’s cracking!
Good to hear (assuming you mean cracking as in great....rather than crumbling😂). I'm really liking it so far! 🙂
@ haha! Cracking as in it’s great!
Phew! 😀
I’ve tried this for the millennium falcon at Disney. But always a group of people not moving or in a spot that just can’t get AI to remove them properly. One day!
Good luck with it...and thanks for watching 🙂
Your video appeared in my feed and I loved it.
Thanks Chris, really glad it was enjoyable. Have a great week. Ed 🙂
Thanks Ed, that was interesting to watch, in a way it was quite nostalgic bringing back memories of the countless B&W films I have processed in the past. If I was hard up I would often cut corners by not bothering with stop bath nor wetting agent. Instead of stop bath I would just flood the tank with water via a hose from the tap before pouring in the fixer. Then instead of wetting agent I would use a very dilute solution of washing up liquid consisting of just one or two drops of washing up liquid in water. There was a time when I mixed up developer from the raw chemicals, Kodak D76 or Ilford ID11, pretty much the same formula as I remember. The good old days!
I don't have this camera but I do have my old Canon T90 which I bought in about 1986 or 1987. The T90 is manual focus only but it was very interesting to see how similar the controls are with your EOS 620. I wanted to keep one film camera but I don't use it much now because of a problem with the battery chamber. The one and only time I ever used non Duracell batteries, they leaked and corroded the contacts in the battery chamber! Can't find anywhere to get it repaired now. However I can't part with it as it accompanied me on many travels including the Middle East.
Thanks for commenting. What a shame about the camera...I think I've been very lucky not to have had battery leaks after leaving alkalines in cameras and accessories for years! I'm a lot more careful these days. I'm sure it must be possible to clean/repair contacts but not sure how easily. I recently bought a "spares/repairs" old Fuji Finepix which has a badly corroded battery compartment and I may try reviving it. Will keep you posted. Thanks for watching. Have a good week 🙂
@@studioswinden Thanks Ed, I would like to get it back in working order if possible. I had thought about buying an old defunct T90 for spares and maybe having a go myself?
@@studioswinden I have got the T90 out of the loft, cleaned it up and determined to get it working. Your channel has got me interested in film photography again. What clinched it was the nostalgic sound of your EOS 620's shutter followed by the auto wind on, sounded just like my T90!
I'm wondering why people would use a cheap point-and-shoot camera when they could just as easily use a cheap digital camera. They both have similarly poor lenses, and with a digital image, you can always achieve a film-like look. I’ve proven this many times with the cheapest digital cameras and phones. If I personally were shooting on film, I’d definitely want the best camera available, with the best possible lenses. And in the end, you realize that even if the gear is 30 years old, it’s still costly because everyone today wants the best. It’s true that you can make good photos with subpar equipment, but as a perfectionist, I’d want the best and would also want the best scanning, which is an issue nowadays, and that's why I’ve abandoned film. I still have about 20 rolls of film in the fridge and a decent SLR camera with top-notch lenses from that time. But I now use them with a digital camera because, ultimately, it’s the same thing. I’ve realized that it’s more important to change location rather than equipment-just the location. When I look at your wonderful city, I feel a bit envious that I’m not there, walking around and seeing it with my own eyes. My city, which is equally picturesque, already knows me too well, and it doesn’t excite me anymore. I don’t see anything new, and I need at least six months to a year to walk through it again and feel like there’s something worth photographing. There have been times when I’ve walked around the city and didn’t take a single shot, even though I always have a camera in hand. But when you go to another city, especially in a large foreign country with a different culture, everything becomes interesting-every little mound, every unexplored plant, every graffiti, every small detail, every pole, every unusual part of the city becomes a reason to take a photo. We should switch places-you come here, and I go there. Instead of swapping cameras, it would be better to change location, to switch cities. In the end, equipment doesn’t really matter; it’s just an extension of our hands to convey our vision, our thoughts onto an image. I truly want authentic analog photography, where the photos are developed, enlarged, and printed analogously, but that’s nearly impossible today. I wish for it because when I look at color photos developed in the old days, there’s simply no comparison. In short: the only aspect it really became better in photography is "contrast". We have now contrast from 0 to 100%, not only from 20% to 80% as it used to be.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I hear what you say about how your home city starts to get boring and hard to make pictures in...for me it's particularly because the light is so flat most of the time. When the sun shines I find everything looks different from day-to-day and hour to hour and I feel a lot more inspired. When there's no sun I really struggle, even though there are opportunities to be found with low contrast and "dramatic" skies. And I think you may well be right about the importance of analogue developing...I wish I had the skills (and money) to produce some "proper" colour prints. Have a great week, and thanks again 🙂
@@studioswindenyes light makes or breaks the image. Grey walls can look particularly flat and boring without shadows. Keep your great work.
I am not a bot Ed, I am a real person who enjoys your videos 👍
I appreciate that! Thanks 🙂
Lovely to watch
Thank you 🙂
I completely agree about the safety aspect, a few years ago I was standing on a level crossing waiting to get a good shot of a train as it came through. My wife yanked me out of the way just in time as the barrier came down without warning ! Always take the wife with you! 👍
Phew! Sounds like you had a lucky escape there...and yes, always good to have the wife around in my experience! 😂 Have a good week 🙂
Happy one hundred videos. Always enjoyable and informative. Always appreciated.
Many thanks, as always. Appreciate your continued support...makes it worth the effort. Have a great week! Ed 🙂
Don't think I've ever done number one, but I don't necessarily agree with number one. Recently, at my wife's nieces wedding, she had rules in place with no photos during the ceremony. But she came up to me and gave me permission to take photos. But the hired photographers had it throughly covered with several cameras on tripods and were taking photos remotely so they didn't disturb the ceremony. We were in the front row, and my wife was bugging me to take photos. But I decided if people noticed me, I would be taking away from the ceremony and didn't take any. So I absolutely agree it's not about me.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Weddings can certainly be a real minefield when it comes to working out the right thing to do. I'm happy that it sounds like you managed to navigate successfully! Have a great week. Ed 🙂
Another enjoyable outing Ed and some valid points made. Particularly in being a decent human being. You also touched on my pet peeve……. taking photos to only get likes or attention from others. All the best Richard
Cheers Richard, glad you enjoyed it. I was just freestyling my thoughts while I was out and about so when I edited it all together I was worried I might sound rather preachy...I'm really happy at least some of it resonated with you. Thanks again, and have a great week. Ed 🙂
great idea.
Thank you! Cheers!
So, is there anything we CAN photograph that doesn't fall into your cliche category?
Exactly!😂 I remember being told once that there have only been about six original ideas in the whole world ever, the trick is to repeat them, but better! Thanks for watching 🙂
The double act returns with an Impressive portfolio of cliches 😅 Loving the compositions and colours here. Encore!
Thanks again! And Lucy says thanks too 🙂
While I’m disappointed that you didn’t include our examples of the biggest cliché of all - cat photos! 😂 - it was nice to look back on a great day of photography in one of my favourite places. Thank you!
Thanks! Yes, I had to miss quite a few of our top cliches out of the video as there just seemed too much to pack in...but maybe we can revisit them sometime. I could do a whole video on street cats!
Now I want to go do a day of cliche
Thanks for watching...go do it! 😀
Interesting to see this, we went to Arles but unfortunately just missed the photo exhibitions by a week. However we did see a display of photos in our hotel lobby. We also found the crossing button that didn't work! It was good to see how serious they take photography and new college facility for studying it.
Thanks for watching...it's definitely worth going back for the photography one year, if you can...some really interesting stuff. You weren't staying at the Atrium by any chance were you? Because we had photos in our hotel lobby (and a pool table :) ) and it was next to that crossing and the carousel? 🙂
@@studioswinden Yes, we were at the Atrium !! Unfortunately the carousel wasn't working as I would have liked to have got some photos of it in operation. However we did find a working carousel in Avignon.
@@paulmoss4199 Great! I've stayed at the Atrium a couple of times...love the rooftop pool! Have a good weekend 🙂
not realy a photo related thing ..but the building behind you in the opening few moments used to be a fruit and veg shop on the upper level on market days and a cafe on the lower level the rest of the week...they did a very nice peppered pea soup ..particulary in winter...mind you this was in the early 60s ...just thought i would mention it..
Thanks for the info...always interesting to hear about the local history. I like watching videos of olden-day Stockport and finding out about stuff. I wasn't around in the early 60s but I was in the 70s...can't remember what it was then! I think the underneath may be part of the dungeon museum now...or is that on the other side? Thanks for watching 🙂
