Q&A: Why do Shimano SLX, XT, XTR (Micro Spline) hubs CREAK and FAIL?
Different chains have different pins widht...
thanks for the video. Im gong through this now. Is Shimano MT501 MicroSpline effected also? As it has the microspline too? Im trying to do a quick fix away from the xt hub. The newer one is the m8120. Not sure if this is bad too. Cheers
Hi! MT501 is completely different design inside, so it doesn’t inherit the XT flaws. At the same time, it has absolutely the same outside dimensions. Meaning, you could easily replace XT and relace the wheel even with your old spokes! 😉
If you live in Estonia you need them.
Is it problem only with shimano hubs ? I want to buy Novatec d902sb microspline, I hope it has different construction
My lock does not have the holes to enter with the pliers. Its just a black ring with no openings or holes. How to remove it?
I died. I know it has been mentioned before. I ride this tube with 4 patches. He says it so proudly.
Диаметры роликов цепей Компаньоло и Шимано не одинаковы, это при измерениях надо учитывать.
You got the same weird deformation of the TPU tube I did. Thanks for double glue suggestion.

Thanks for a detailed and friendly mannered info!
Welcome! Hope my experience makes some use for you also 🤘
Um verdadeiro LIXO da engenharia Shimano, substitui um XTR por Arc que custa 5 vezes menos e estou muito satisfeito
una pregunta cada cuento se le hace el mantenimiento normal para que no se dañe el Micro Spline...saludos
Rule #1A - the DRIVETRAIN must be perfectly clean. Otherwise it will simply transfer its grease & grime to your freshly waxed chain.
Dont tell anybody, but I used Gorilla Tape cut in the shape of a patch. A generous sized patch. Stuck it on the TPU tube and it stuck tight. I used an old hairdryer to heat it really hot and it is really stuck. I have 3 patched tubes inflated and hanging up. I think it works.
I bought myself the Pedros and checked my 12 speed shimano Deore chain after 4000 km and it reads .75%. Regardless what the say that 12 speed needs to be .5% I am changing mine regardless. Why do they recommend higher percentage for 1 and 12 speed given they are narrower and lighter chains?
I used some tpu glue (branded tpu glue but it seemed more like super glue) but it didn't seal. Maybe my mistake was to use the Cyclami supplied patches that already have some glue on them. Doesn't the preapplied glue on the patches interfere with the glue you're adding on? Also, has anybody figured out what this tpu glue actually is? Thanks.
Very helpful. It appears Garmin sepearted the US from Canada and grouped Canada and one US state.
I had the deore group set of the same version (that they discontinued because it was somehow even worse than the SLX ones) and I didn't know that it was broken so I rode it until it literally destroyed the entire hub. Took like 4 years though
I have yet to see any GP5000's that dont do this. I tried to sell a pair on ebay last month and had to expect a return because the guy thought they had perished.
Hello, I have the Shimano FH-MT401 Center-Lock Rear Hub 135mm and my question is, is this freehub affected too?
No, yours is completely different design inside
You’re taking your life in your own hands, especially if it’s a front wheel. Get a new tire.
Yup
I appreciate the detail. Will try this soon. Sorta embarrassed not to have thought of this myself. Cause, over the years, I must have spent $100 or so on chain checkers while my caliper just stayed in the tool box.
Thanks! great info. Used to patching butyl tubes, you need to wait till the cement feels dry to to the touch, while with Tubolito instructions you just wait 1 minute, but the minute will vary with the amount of glue, air temperature, etc, and if I wait too long with Tubolito, it does not glue at all, its hard to wait too long with butyl, patches fail to stick more often if you wait too little than if you wait too long. So my question is how long do you leave the glue to set before applying the patch, and how do you know you have waited enough?
FWIW, im at 7000km on a slx hub, and its doing just fine. Riding on a Rocky Mountain Altitude powerplay, which until recently with the launch of the new DJI motor was the most powerful EMTB motor out there. So the hub has to endure quite a bit. I did grease and oil the hub from the start because it was noisy (i figured shimano forgot to grease it or whatever...), but not with any special shimano kind of grease. I just used SRAM butter on outer teeth, and basic sewing machine oil on the inner teeth. It has been working flawlessly for me so far. Just yesterday i had to regrease it because over time it does start to make a bit more sound. But after regreasing / oiling its completely silent again. And i have to say, i like it very much for that reason. I would never go back to a noisy freehub again. After these 7000km the teeth all look like new and the plastic spacer shows no wear (it did came with the black one, not white).
Could you tell me the serial code? It's the two big letter on a round sticker
@@Psi-du2lw The sticker says "swc TJ" Not sure if that helps?
@@_S13_ Thanks, yours is made in 2021. Could you confirm what you meant by inner teeth? Is it the one that says "DO NOT DISASSEMBLY"?
@@Psi-du2lw That would make sense, the bike is from early 2022. Yeah with the inner teeth i mean those 45deg angled teeth that mesh in to each other and provide the clamping force of the ratcheting mechanism when you pedal forward. It is indeed next to that warning you mention. Though i think it says "do not grease inside" or something like that. Which is supposed to mean: dont grease the inside of the axle hole, otherwise the bearing race might slip and cause damage over time... You should still grease or oil the entire ratcheting mechanism. So that warning is very confusing!
@@_S13_ Got it. I'm very intrested in silent freehub myself, that's why I'm still planning to use Shimano freehubs despite being known as problematic. Later generation and greasing on the right spots should hopefully fix the issue. The warning "Do not oil, do not grease" is very confusing indeed! But of course it's make sense for that part to be greased. Thank you for taking time answering my questions!
They don't fail on me ... not on my bike.
This free hub can't last forever in the same time
Thank you very much, Brother!
Welcome 🤜🤛
Thanks for sharing your experience
Welcome 🤜🤛
Same scenario here, have been using TPU tube over a week, it will strangely 100% deflated after 6 hours…try to find the root cause but no luck…at the end decides to go back to the conventional tube.. TPU, lightweight but the practicality sucks…
The worst tubes in the planet. Save weight with titanium spokes and carbon rims …. THIS IS NOT WORTH THE HASSLE
I’m having this problem with a Yunscm 28-35 in a 32mm tire. From 50# to 40# in 24hrs. My first experience with TPU. Yah, i too know how to find pinhole slow leaks. So what to do? Try another Yunscm? I have 2 more new ones. Try another brand TPU? Ride the slow leak tube & hope for the best? Give up on TPU??
BTW i decided to try the Yunscm for two reasons. They have metal valve stems. They come in 28-35 size. I use 32mm tires & felt better about the tire bring mid-range in the tube spec as opposed to at the extreme with the far more common 18-32 speced tubes. I see the Cyclami tubes recommended here in another post are reasonably priced. Maybe will give them a try. Any opinion on using the 18-32 vs the 32-47 on my 32mm tires?
I bought 10 TPU from AliExpress. But 3 of them are leaking at the valve between the valve core and the black tube. If I screw the valve deeper then there is not enough valve for the pump adapter to hold on. I tried to reinsert with E6000 glue on the valve threads but didn’t help. I think it is hit or miss, good batch or bad batch. What bothers me the most is I don’t feel to have to mount a spare TPU to be sure it is OK. To see the leak, just mount it, pressure to 120psi apply soap and water on stem and watch for bubbles or wait overnight.
WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME!!
I have this hub, it's been squeaking like this since yesterday, I'm pissed! because I have to take the bike to the service center now. I have some kind of SLX hub on my old bike, I bought the wheels used, and it's been working since 2018, and here's the new super hyper one and it's gone crazy... 😩
As a commuter rider who encounters lots of glass, every tire I have gets at least one like this at some point during its life. I just keep an eye on it for bulging and if it bulges more than a couple millimeters, I replace it. I use tire liners, which kind of function as a continuous boot, and reduces the bulging.
What is your tire favorite as a commuter? I have used Schwalbe Marathon Racer for commuting and cannot imagine something like this happening. They seemed almost bulletproof (and heavy).
@@ZavyalovCycling When the GP5000's came out, I bought a bunch of GP4000's cheap. I'm finishing off the last one. I hope the GP5000's are about the same as the 4000's when it comes to doing this. That's my summer tire. For winter I use the Continental GP 4 season. It doesn't do this. My flats are mostly from metal things like wires from steel belted radials or staples. Both tires, used with tire liners, provide good protection against glass. I usually get more than 1,000 miles of urban riding between flats. I don't make a lot of power, so I appreciate the lower rolling resistance of a sport type tire.
Thank you! I'm here in the United States and ratatou the same problem. I thought I'd try this before calling Garmin and your solution worked perfectly! Thank you again!
Thank you for the feedback! Now I’m curious how long it will take Garmin to firmware fix this 😂
How do you find chain life with a waxed chain
Check before new application
I do NOT recomend CYCLAMI. I bought a pair of cyclami tubes with metal valves, put them on the wheels and rode about 2 months (60 PSI). Everything was fine, so I bought 3 more to spare. After a few days, one of the tubes started to leak at the connection between the valve and the tube. So I took the 1st spare, put it on the wheel and after inflating it started leaking at the same place. The exact same thing happened to the 2nd spare, so I went back to butyl. Didn't check the 3rd spare cause I was tired of changing tubes at that point. There seems to be a problem with bonding between metal and TPU. I didn't test the ones with the plastic valve though.
Thank you for the feedback! Have not tried Cyclami tubes yet - just the patches.
mine leaked intermittently at the seam. careful inspection at the seam will show significant delamination
Funny how it is always the gp5000 when I search for this. And guess what, I have a gp5000. 😂
haha I came here after getting a 2cm slice in my newish GP5k. I think it is too big of a cut to patch though
"The required deep cleaning doesn't happen for free" Nah mate, that's called price skimming. Like sure it's not even close to free, but it doesn't cost $70 at scale, absolutely not.
Garmin Edge 840--the problem remains, but the solution provided in the video works!
Thank you for the feedback! I was 99% sure that Garmin has fixed this via firmware updates by now 😂 Naive 😂
I'm late to the party on this one. I wonder if the important point of chain wear is not so much that the chain is .5% longer than new, but .5% longer than the intended spec. You allude to this somewhat around 4:45 point of the video. Possibly because of initial slop, the chain you measured will exceed the .5% chain checker limit after only .34% wear. That implies the chain has an initial .16% slop. As I understand it, the important point of exceeding the .5% isn't so much wear of the chain, but the effect a longer chain has on wearing out the cassette gears and the ring gears, and the degradation of shifting by the chain jumping and so on. So, maybe the initial new measurement is interesting, but the chain quality and initial slop determines how much wear a chain can get before it exceeds the .5% limit, and when .5% more than spec is exceeded is when the chain needs to be replaced. Does that make sense?
I had the same experience with these tubes along with WTB's tpu tubes. Thie first time, I threw in a Ride Now on my gravel bike in the middle of a race. It held great for the remainder of it. When I went to clean my bike the day after, that tire was completely flat. I reinflated it and it lost a lot of air in a couple hours. I checked for leaks and saw none at first. I checked again the next day and discovered a bunch of really tiny holes. Very very small. About 7 of them. I wondered if it chemically reacted with the residual sealant or if the friction between the tire and the tube was the cause. The WTB's did the same thing. I bought them because they were cheaper than the Aerothan's I ran. I compared the Aerothan tubes with the Ride Now and WTB's. The Aerothan tubes are thicker and feel much more durable than the alternatives. But at a cost. I've never had mystery leaks with the Aerothan tubes.
Thank you for the feedback! In particular, for mentioning the residual sealant fact - exactly my case. Even though I did my best to clean the insides of the tyres, some tiniest bits were surely left. Some TPU tubes might not chemically stand it, indeed (though they should).
I've had good luck with RideNow tubes. My only problem came when using 36 gram tubes with 32mm cyclocross tires. One tube ripped at the band that connects the tube together and the other had stretch marks at the band. It was clear they had stretched too far. I switched to 45 gram gravel tubes and have had no problems. My experience with 25 and 28mm tires with 36 gram tubes has been great over more than a year. Also no problem with 45 gram tubes in 38mm gravel tires. For me, they hold air much longer than butyl. I had one puncture with a small thorn and the supplied patch developed a very slow leak after a few days. The patch peeled off easily and I applied a tiny drop of gel super glue to the hole before applying another patch and that has held for months. All of the tubes had the clear, rather than older black stems. They just introduced new 39 gram all-road tubes for wider tires. My advice is to go as heavy as will fit in your tire, because TPU does not like to stretch.
I bought the gravel version (claims to go up to 47mm) for a 47mm tire and they lasted less than a week. I have the same suspicion as you do. I will probably try the MTB version so they don't stretch as much.
So what should we buy then 😂
This issue prompted me to try Hope hubs on an alternate wheel set. Not a single issue. Several times more expensive though 😉
i like how you present this annoying issue with a big smile on your face 😄 I've used both 24g and 36g road tubes and never had this issue. just the problem of easily puncturing from the smallest of thorns
Hi! As I’ve mentioned earlier, none of my road RN tubes has been affected by this issue either. Even after a year of use. But all of MTB ones have failed exactly this way 🤪 Lottery!
I had a complete failure in the free-hub body of my 12sp SLX - lasted 2500+ miles, I went SLX after my XT 12sp failed. Replaced 12sp xt derailler and shifters too way too early too, SRAM 12sp NX is even better
Does it work for sram gx which got bigger pins
