I’m Melisa! A mom of five children with only two left at home. I’ve been a wife, an ex-wife and a wife again. Two of my children have spectrum struggles. My oldest has ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and my youngest has SPD (sensory processing disorder). I am a stroke survivor and I love my life.
Erik here! I'm a husband, father, entrepreneur, videographer and content creator, editor and teacher. Melisa and I decided to take a leap of faith years ago when I quit my newspaper job to pursue building Waldorf Essentials. It’s a decision we've never regretted.

@@waldorfessentials thank you! I will look at that
Yes please!!! 🤣 mine never stops. Luckily hes super sweet, clever, funny buttttt ohh my goodness my brain hurts sometimes
You got this mama!
I thought the alphabetical order didn't matter in Waldorf? Maybe I'm confused, I haven't looked at the revised edition of grade one yet.
You are correct the letters are not taught in a traditional abc order.
@@waldorfessentials good thing to know! I'll have one in first grade next year!
Third time teaching it ❤️
What I do, is I have two in the grades and a kinder. So there's enough block pages for each kid to have one section per month per block, even if it's a reoccurring block! So it'll start with the month we start, this year it's August, tab one is blue and is sectioned off for my 6th grader, block is laid out, materials, experiences, trips etc and the next page with the weeks I white it out and label them for weeks 1-4 in a month. We're doing five days a week this year and taking every tenth off so that rounds out to be every other Monday off and the end of the month is pretty open! So we can use that for trips, make up work, wrapping up, documentaries etc.
Sounds like a fabulous plan!
How far ahead do you gather resources, supplies and make artwork? 😊
Great question! This will very based on the amount of time you have available for planning, your temperament and how many kids you are planning for. When you have multiple children you can also keep in mind you can re use that artwork for the next child. Which grade(s) are you planning for?
@@waldorfessentials kindergarten 🤣
How do you establish routines with the older children who may be resistant to chores?
Hi, great question! How old are we referring to? What age range do you have in the home?
One brave parent. My husband committed suicide when our twins were born. What a selfish loaf 🍞
I'm so sorry you've had to experience this.
Absolutely!

Short but sweet. Great concise advice.
So happy you found this video helpful. We have lots more helpful tips on our social media here. instagram.com/waldorf_essentials/
I have found this video so immensely helpful. Thank you so much for posting it. I have recently discovered Waldorf and I am so sad I did not know about it sooner. I have a daughter who will start third grade this fall. I really want to put her in a Waldorf School but have some hesitations and concerns about whether or not it would be a good fit for her. She has struggled a bit academically in traditional school. I worry that if I put her in a Waldorf School she will feel even further behind because it will be so different to her. But I also want for her to develop a love for learning. She does not have that at her current school and very much struggles with anxiety regarding learning. Any advice would be greatly appreciated❤
So happy to hear you found this video helpful! Have you considered homeschooling her? We offer homeschooling independently with our Waldorf Essentials Curriculum. Melisa, Thank you so much for the reminder to have fun! Always take so much value from the wisdom you share! ❤
Thanks for being here with us! Hope you have a great remainder of your homeschool year.
Melissa I need your expertise. I have a 4 1/2 year old with ASD and a 2 1/2 year old with ASD. Both boys. One is a bit more severe than the other but I absolutely love the Waldorf philosophy and would just love for them to go to a Waldorf school but I’m scared of losing their services or for them to regress. I don’t know what to do.
Hi, have you thought about homeschooling them? Would you be able to keep their services?
This was the first video I have watched about Waldorf in the home. I would have appreciated some understanding of the philosophy sprinkled in this video as well to understand the purpose of fluff or general educational philosophy in a home setting. Do you have other videos that go a bit deeper to provide context?
How old is your child (ren)? This will help me direct you to the right material. Excited to hear you want to learn more!
@@waldorfessentials yes I have a 3 year old and 1 year old and we are going the homeschooling route. Thank you
Thank you for talking about this. It's important. These children are shaping their own personal character and we definitely need to be available to guide them. Otherwise, they'll be in danger of following the wrong lead.
You're welcome! So happy you found it helpful and you are doing the work too for your child.
@@waldorfessentials Absolutely. He is homeschooling with me and is doing great 👍 of course, he still has his struggles with growing up but he and I discuss life often and I really appreciate my husband working so hard so I can be here for him the moment he needs me.

Thank you! This is exactly the type of information I've been looking for and haven't been able to find. I'm wondering if it's because Waldorf is a patented method, unlike many other homeschooling methods. I'm currently in my first year of homeschooling using a Charlotte Mason approach, which i feel like is a great balance between some of the Waldorf concepts and a more classical or traditional method. But I'm curious to try a few weeks of Waldorf style lessons and see how it works for us. I've always thought that Waldorf was more difficult to implement and it seems like that is the case, but there are benefits in that as well!
Come join our Office Hours in March! We will take the difficulty out of the idea of Waldorf homeschooling and inspire you to try the full experience! www.waldorfessentials.com/support
I really appreciate the information cup metaphor and the reminder to be teachable.
So happy to hear! We are always here for you to reach out with questions.
Thank you Melisa!
You are so welcome!
Hi Melissa! I would love a video about how you fit in multiple main lessons and skills practice lessons (if you do them separately like in a Waldorf school) Also would love a hypothetical run down on how you would do say a two child family homeschool, for example how long would you spend on each child and would you do skills practice together or separate I'm a picture painted for me kind of girl (even if it's just an example) Thank you! Love your videos

Is there a reason you have to replace Crayola, for example, with specific brands? I understand quality but I feel you could get similar results from a variety of sources? I'm just trying to learn the 'why' behind specific brands
In Waldorf Education we recommend specific block crayons and stick beeswax crayons. It's not a must to homeschool. They are high quality tools to create meaningful art with the child. We recommend the Stockman set here: amzn.to/3Shks0T Or the Filana set here: Blocks - amzn.to/4aSyGwk Sticks - amzn.to/3U3xPTH

I've never seen one of these- I absolutely love it 😍 As an adult who 'fell through the cracks' with math very early on in my public school education... something I continue to grapple with as an adult... I even feel this would be helpful to me. Are the sequences written out within straight from your curricula? They look very precise, simple, and clean... something I struggle to find within math resources even for my own adult eyes. Feeling immensely inspired by this: thank you, I think we'll start one with the new year!

Your journals are beautiful, Melissa
Thank you! Do you create your own?
I used to journal daily. I burned all those. Then I just kept a scripture study journal and journaled through every chapter of the Bible. The last couple of years, I haven't written but I have been trying to get back into it lately. Random, but are you still LDS? You're one of the few women I know who is (was?) and head covers. I used to wear them but got headaches.

I'm a Black parent and educator, currently in my first year of Waldorf teacher training. I really appreciate this conversation as it really shows the deep thinking and planning that goes into the forming of every student's educational experience. I agree that we do not want to wake up children too quickly, however, 7th and 8th grade is far too late to begin talking about the transatlantic slave trade. First of all, there are ways to talk about the history of African Americans without waking the child too quickly, just as we talk about all things in Waldorf in a developmentally appropriate way, through myth and story. The danger of waiting until 7th and 8th grade to talk about such things is multiple. First of all, children who don't know the reality of the world are often ostracized and exploited when in communities outside (and sometimes inside) of their Waldorf schools. In other words, my biracial children are not safe and will not be seen as part of the Black community without this knowledge. Second, because Waldorf introduce subjects developmentally appropriately, I would rather have a Waldorf approach introduce these topics than students be introduced through their peers in a way that is not appropriate. So I encourage us all, with the same care and intention that we approach all curricula, to also approach difficult subjects and topics in the same way.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! Wishing you the best in your Waldorf training.
Yay!

One & only Melisa 💜 I type with tears stacked up high in my eyes- the residual tones of your spoken message here rippling through me. Mostly: I just learned about the health experiences you have recently navigated last week- I had no idea and I really, really hope you are thriving. What I mostly long to convey is that for a split second instance, I imagined you not being here for me to thank & extend gratitide for you being you as profusely as my heart ongoingly longs to do. I have been a mama for 11 years and a Waldorf inspired home educator for going on 6. I have been caring for my father here at home (who struggles with dementia & other profound issues) for a decade, and I have been in varying real degrees of MMM for the same. You are the OnLy person who reaches me on this matter. I have tried as often as I'm able in connecting with you to try and let you know that 'your voice' reaches me... through all the echoes and cacophony of the social medias... the overlapping voices & opinions... your voice reaches me like a bird singing or a church bell in a favorite neighborhood- I have always heard your messages and you have helped me just profoundly over the years, on all the levels a woman can be. I want to thank you, for giving so freely... for your wisdom... for the support you lend tirelessly. You are in service light years beyond creating & selling curriculum. You are a guiding light. I'm irrelevant, but you matter to me very much and I guess I just want you to know there's a heart here on the west coast that has been grandly touched by you being who you are. I remain in MMM, but I feel increasingly aware of the work that needs to be done. Thanks to you, the fire gets bigger beneath me to relieve how much it matters. Thank you, Melisa... this big ol novel comment is because I felt a surge of needing to express my gratified for all you've been across the years. I wanted you to know. Hoping you folks have a blessed weekend- I'll be ruminating on this message myself, gaining momentum ❤️
Thank you for this very kind message. So thankful you have been on this journey with me. Sweet messages like this remind me of my purpose and keep me going.

Let them cry, struggle, and learn to figure things out for themselves at an early age. That's what I loved about home schooling my kids.
