  • f you have a talker (I was one!) then sometimes you can reach your limit. Even if you don’t have a talker, sometimes as a mama you just need a break - even for just a minute or two so you can catch your breath. How can you do that without being mean or causing trauma? A few things 👇🏼
❤️it starts with helping them know that quiet is safe. Having quiet times in your home is sacred. This does NOT mean you don’t listen to them, it just means that quiet is safe.
❤️don’t wait to ask until you are at your boiling point! Learn YOUR body and know when you need a break BEFORE you need it. You are a grown up, you know when it is welling up in you, you get to slow it down.
❤️fire a warning shot 🤣 “hey my love, have you brushed your teeth yet?” Something that can easily distract them. This works at ANY age.
❤️if the warning shot didn’t work then let them finish their sentence and say kindly while opening for a hug “I love you, Mama needs a break. Will you come back and finish that interesting story in about five minutes? I need to be in my head alone for just a moment.”
If you are new to being firm about your boundaries and listening to your body then this might be hard at first. Make sure you warn them when you are not upset. Let them know that you are trying your best to be a better mama and that means sometimes you need a break. Create a sweet story if needed. Then really work hard on dealing with your shadow! We all need breaks but we need them more often if we let our shiznet rule us. Do the work.
And lastly, when you come out of your allotted quiet time, return with joy, happiness and envelop them with love. Thank them for giving you a moment. Children need to learn boundaries and they also need to know how to have quiet, these are lessons it is our job to teach them.
enjoy this old picture of Sariah and I from years when employing this was so so important. She learned how to embrace the safety of quiet and how to express what she needed to. These are beautiful lessons.
