Hi, I'm Matt. I'm a photographer based in Northern California. Here I'll share my behind the scenes experiences of how I make my photos, from early hikes to catch the sunrise in a National Park to a quick bike ride into to shoot the sunset. I'll share my successes, my failures, photography and travel tips, bag reviews (of course), and the challenges of doing it all on a moderate budget. But most of all I hope to connect with you about photography. Thanks for checking out my channel and I hope you follow along.

Snow Bunting in San Francisco?
Snow Bunting in the Bay Area. These little guys shouldn’t be here, they are arctic birds. But this one lost his way and is living the good life near Hayward. I made a little video.

Excellent review! Love the more “human” approach to your review instead of just the same ol’ techno mumbo-jumbo that is prevalent on RUclips. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.
What an amazing sight ! Such rare bird to show up here is truly remarkable.
Matthew, So nice and calming. A beautiful bird. Thanks for sharing this.
Very helpful. Thank you
Fantastic video Matthew :) What a cool bird, huh ? I got 3000 shots of him, so of course a handful of ringers ;)
@@Chris_Wolfgram I know! I took so many of him. What a great sighting!
@@MatthewRaifman hey so keep your eyes open, that same place has had 4 Different Longspur''s too. Lapland are somewhat regular... A handful each year 👍
Nice review, thanks. I have a 70-180 and I love it. I have owned F mount 70-200 F/2.8 lenses and wow I love the 70-180 weight and image quality. Stay safe :0)
Love these ❤
thank you so much
How do you feel the quality of this Z mount 70-180 compares to an F mount with adapter 70-200 on the Z8?
@@DanelleFCG I’d love to comment but I haven’t shot the 70-200 on the z8. I did have the 70-200 f/2.8 on F Mount with the d850 and this lens is comparable but much lighter.
I have a question... After you've calibrated the lens, does the camera recognize the lens after you switch with another lens and put the first one back on?
Yes it does! At least, with the Nikkor and tamron lenses I’ve used. You do not have to recalibrate every time.
Excited to bird now thanks 🎉
Have fun out there!
I think I’m gonna go this route
Great discovery Matthew. Very helpful in the field. Expect few more tips in future. Please suggest for speedy small & big flying bird what autofocus mode do you use with success
I can do a video on this if I get time, but for small birds without a busy background, auto AF is actually very very good. I use 3D tracking or a custom small subject detect box for other situations. I always have dual bbf with a separate single point AF for overrides when needed.
Such a nice detailed video. Thank you for sharing the knowledge. I just got a Pro 300 today and run my first print, a BW photo of my daughter on the luster paper. I bought a package of sample papers that comes with some different variety so I can test and see the differences. Loved the quality and I'm happy with the purchase.
I’m so glad! It’s a wonderful printer!
Place a sheet of glassine on top of the print before you press down on it. You now know, pressing directly onto the image is a no go.
Do you know maybe if build quality is the same like Tamron G1 because I hear that AF of Nikon 70 180 is better than Tamron G1 (different af motor)...optically is the same lens but phisically maybe Nikon better.
I’m not totally sure. Nikon definitely put their own spice into the mix on these remakes, including lens coatings. Wouldnt surprise me but I don’t know.
Tanks for sowing te pasting method. I ave a question, what do you do or would like to suggest to protect the print. Is there some kind of laminate that you use or just leave the prints bare?
Thanks.. it's very helpful.❤🎉
💯
Elephant in the room: What the heck is Gatorboard?
it's a polystyrene foam, kind of like foam core or board, except it is sandwiched between two layers of something else (vinyl maybe?) that give it a more smooth exterior that is a bit stronger and more damage resistent.
@@MatthewRaifman It's sandwiched between manufactured wood chips - which is WAY better and more rigid than standard foam board which uses paper as the bread of the sandwich.
It has become a WORLD of SHIT
Happy with Nikon D 500 but I don't use Video.
Hi, thank you for making this very helpful video. A couple questions: Are you are at all concerned that Gatorboard is not really acid-free, not considered achival, and will release gas(es) that could adversely affect your work over time? Do you by chance have any experience with using it on a print you've had for a long time? Or do you think that for the purposes for which you're using it there's no need to worry about things that might happen at some potentially rather distant point in the future? I'm trying to figure out if this is something I need to worry about. Thanks.
Hey, thanks for the comment. I should probably do a follow-up video on this approach to mounting. I do have concerns about gatorboard for long-term application. Firstly, I don't the adhesive on the self-adhesive version I used is good enough. I have noticed bubbling after long term use, albeit in a relatively humid place in Northern California. Second, I think there are long term issues with the acid and the exposed image in general. For my use, it was all ok. I mounted the images and use them for display, customers buy separate prints that I custom make. I'm not selling the mounted product. However, if you are thinking of selling a mounted product, I might consider an acid free approach and using your own adhesive. Hope that helps! If there are other things you'd like me to hit on, let me know.
Lovely. Thank you.
Matthew, Just wondering how you are feeling about the 600 pf. I do some small birding here on the east coast. Tried the z100-400 on my apsc Nikon, but still didn’t give me enough reach. Added the 1.4tc but was disappointed with the image quality. Reviews of the 180-600 seem to agree its a bit disappointing at 600mm. I’ve never used a long prime lens…have always had zooms. Do you find you miss the flexibility of a zoom? Thanks
Sorry, just seeing this. The 600pf is crazy sharp and has fantastic VR. It’s fantastic as a daytime walk around lens. It takes the 1.4x TC wonderfully as well. The elephant in the room is the aperture. Now I absolutely have gotten higher iso shots that I can denoise sufficiently with software. But as a solo wildlife lens I’m struggling with it a bit. I photograph owls often and it’s just not bright enough for those situations. I’m routinely at 20,000 ISO around sunset and very slow shutter speeds to boot. This much is predictable, but if you’re going to stick to daytime, I don’t have faults. I don’t miss the flexibility for birding because I never fill the frame but for mammals like bobcats it could be an issue. If you need 800mm you might consider a used 800 pf though because you won’t lose the stop of light with the TC
@ Matt, Thanks much for that additional info. I ‘hear ya’ on the challenges of relying on it as one’s sole serious wildlife lens (for me, almost all little birds). Best regards, Craig
Berkeley resident here: love it!
Wonderful! What's the last third of the video supposed to be dark nothing there?
Weird export error. Will try to delete that in RUclips. Sorry!
The Ruddy Duck was super cute!
I’m a sucker for them. They always look so cozy.
Looking to get my kid a camera....she played with a friends camera some and I'd like to give her a chance to try photography as well as making some videos... From the time she had with my friends canon, and my old DSLR, we have decided a viewfinder is necessary. A year later after posting this video, do you think this X-S20 is still a good idea? I do like the form factor, the fuji film simulations seem cool for someone getting into photography maybe avoiding the keed to learn a lot of editing and post processing right away...and the lens options seem to have affordable choices to fill the needs... like a wide 10-18 2.8 zoom and 18-55, from Sigma...affordable and also pretty small... lots of nice primes available, etc... Thanks again for the video, any input would be greatly appreciated...
Excellent dissertation!
don’t use live view!
Hey, look what video I found.😊
Haha, totally forgot I did this review. There you go! My first impressions.
@@MatthewRaifman It was actually very helpful and honest. Not sure how I missed it before. Now to decide on a camera.
I have a Z8, 24-120, and 400 f4.5. It seems like this bag will be a great fit. Can I also ask what lens sleeve are you using for your 400 f4.5 lens? Thanks!
Yes, you should be fine. It's a pretty solid choice! It's on sale now too. That is the RolandPro sleeve. I love their products. Buy from Aliexpress and it'll be a lot cheaper, but will take a few weeks to arrive.
Clear concise, super job..Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
I've followed your video instruction precisely several times and can not get my D5 to fine tune a Nikon 50mm f1.4G lens. Frustrating. Any thoughts what I might be doing wrong?
I’m wondering if the D5 has a different approach than d850. Are you able to get to the fine tune menu but then cannot activate the auto fine tune?
@@MatthewRaifman I believe I've figured out the problem. I opened up the lens to a full f1.4 and the AF fine tune procedure worked immediately. What a relief! I also discovered it will only work when in AF-S mode, and won't work in AF-C mode. Thank you for getting back to me. I appreciate your work and willingness to help. 👍
Where do you print your photos, or what kind of printer do you use
I print these myself. I use a canon pro 300 printer. You can see a more recent video where I walk through the printing process. I’d look at the pro 1000 or pro 1100 too.
So useful ❤. Is there a link to lens skin?
So glad! It’s the Rolandpro. Love these for long lenses. Cheapest from Ali direct from china but takes a few weeks. Also on Amazon. www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804362161454.html?gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt&_randl_shipto=US
So how did you do the actual adjustment
Very nice pictures! I want to photograph this bridge with clouds around it from mount tamalpais peak.
Hi Matthew, just wondering how can I calibrate AF Fine Tune in Nikon d750 with a tamron 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 and a Teleplus (teleconverter) HD Pro 2X DGX. Is that something you can help with??? Please . I would like to have very sharp telephoto in auto mode and and also in manual mode 🙏 thanks . By the way, you have good content!!!
This video should get you to the process, but because you can only enter one adjustment per lens, you have to choose which focal length. I would probably calibrate at both focal length extremes and then split the difference. Or just calibrate for the middle of the image: 200mm. Hope that helps
Very Nice. Thanks. Apparently you have prefered the Z8/600Pf combo vs A7V 500/5.6 Sigma over the long term ? Probably because of image stabilisation and teleconverter possibilities ?
Wish they made this in f mount DX lens with vr iii
500 7.1 is crazy 😭
It’s better than you’d think. I have a number of portfolio images that were made with that lens.
@@MatthewRaifman I used to own one back with an R3, it was ok but not enough in UK weather.
@@frostybe3roh yes! I can definitely see that being an issue. Honestly I loved the 300 f/2.8. Not a lot of reach but such a great optic.
@@MatthewRaifman pretty sure the 300 GM is significantly different from the old canon one 🤣
Amazing! Great images! Makes me feel and remember how moving is to be in such beautiful kind of nature.
I'm still undecided about which mirrorless system to buy. I'm only a hobbyist and I have Nikon and Canon DSLRs and lenses. I like the full frame look and colors with my old Canon 6D. But having smaller camera and lenses may be a bless. Fuji seems tempting, small, good IQ, third party lenses...
Fuji has a lot of great class. It’s definitely different from full frame so you have to consider your options. I have crop, full, and medium format cameras and each is a bit different.
@@MatthewRaifman good thing it's there are more options, I'll wait until the next year. I'm between Fuji, Sony, Panasonic L mount and Nikon. But Fuji and Sony have the big advantage of being open mounts with third party lenses, and being the smaller bodies overall.
Hi Matthew, thanks for the considerable amount of work you put into this review. As a result of your review I have purchased a used 400 DO ii and after a few days of testing, I am delighted with the lens. I can’t believe how (relatively) light and small the lens is and I am very pleased with image quality and bokeh. I can confirm your findings, image quality at f4 is pretty good but improves greatly at f5.6. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the lens works on my Canon R7. Various reviews are not very complimentary of this lens/camera combination. Once you start pixel peeping you can see that the image quality is not as good as on the R5 (which is to be expected) but it is quite acceptable and hardly noticeable until you zoom in to 100%. I also have a 100-500 lens but find the 400 DO is a decent step up in IQ and bokeh is far better. That said, you do of course lose the flexibility of the 100-500 range and close focusing ability. However, IMO the 400 DO ii is still a good lens in 2024 and an excellent used purchase!
Wonderful! I’m so happy the video was useful and even more so that you are happy with your purchase! Get out there and put it to use! Happy shooting
Thank you for this info 🙏 ❤👍
The idea that the mechanical shutter moves the sensor and affects image sharpness on the Canon R7 seems to be a misunderstanding. Here’s how the mechanical shutter works in general: In cameras like the Canon R7, the mechanical shutter is a physical curtain that covers and uncovers the sensor. When you take a photo with the mechanical shutter, it opens to expose the sensor to light and then closes again to end the exposure. The key is that while the shutter is open, the sensor is completely stationary, and no movement happens during that time. The image is captured when the shutter is fully open, so any movement of the sensor would occur either before or after the image is taken. As for the electronic shutter, it has no moving parts. The sensor is read electronically row by row without the need for a physical shutter. It can, however, be more susceptible to rolling shutter distortion (especially in fast-moving subjects), but it doesn't involve any mechanical movements. In summary, the mechanical shutter shouldn't cause any significant sensor movement that would affect sharpness. If there are reports of images not being tack-sharp with the mechanical shutter, it could be due to other factors like slight camera shake, shutter shock, or other external influences, but not sensor movement.
Thanks for the detailed description of what’s going on with each shutter option but the idea of shutter shock is that there is residual shock have a large mechanical shutter movement and it is definitely a thing that is observable on most cameras.
Yes, understand. The thing is that I tried steady shot samples in all 3 shutter modes but I myself could not see any significant or even small differences in sharpness when pixelpeeping. 1000 on the shutterspeed. I can however imagine Shutterstock being introduced at lower speeds.
Looks like you went with the 600 instead of the 800. It can be a lot too chew but the 600 looks like the big brother to the 400 4.5. Enjoy the new toy!
Yes I upgraded. I think it was the right call because I was cropping constantly on the 400
Thats amazing video. I just got r7 and i have sigma 150-600 mm and i do aviation photography I used to use 6d mark ii with 150-600 Any tips for r7 and sigma 150-600?
Will look forward to hearing your thoughts on it as an edc. I rented one for a week, but didn’t have a great time getting on with it. In the sunshine, i found the images on the lcd hard to see. And i couldn’t figure out how to change settings on the go. Maybe i didn’t give it enough time?
The GR has a very hard learning curve to manage settings, but once you got it, it becomes super agile...
