MK12 Mod 0 Update and Final Load Development with 77 grain SMK and Tac
Dog 🐶 says hi
I haven't seen the rifle build video yet, but these seem extremely slow. I'm running 2720 fps range with the 77 gr. I'm also running an 18" barrel 1:7. I'm just surprised. Still enjoying the video.
I thought so as well. Especially with CFE223. I’m running just over 2700 fps out of my 18” MK12’s also but this 16” barrel seems to be running a tad slow, at least where it likes to group best. I liked group #7 with Tac which was running at 2683 fps, I just started seeing some stamping on the brass
@hkrifleworks how many rounds do you have on the barrel?
Just hit 300. If if were to speed up, I’d imagine it would have after the first 150 rounds or so
My guy is still building some of the best clone / homage builds on the web! Glad to see ya back brother we need to catch up.
Appreciate the kind words, bro! Absolutely, it has been far too long. There is a 1400yd range being built close to the house. We need to get the 223’s out there! I’ll be down your way here soon as well. Going to take some vacation this fall to do some shootin and family holiday time.
Dog says hi
Mission accomplished 🐶🫡
The rifle needs some more weight. A couple of pounds greatly increases the ability to stay on and shoot follow-up. Also, the chassis is a bit different than the oryx. It is made for this gun for Savage by MDT.
Completely agree depending on the application of the rifle. Correct. Proprietary to the Axis II Precision but very similar to the Oryx. In hindsight, I should have noted the differences. For time and straightforwardness around stock/chassis improvement, I lumped them together. Will make the adjustment in future videos
Why would you go full mass opposed to low mass? Just wondering because mine is on a nomad 30 and I’m about as low mass as you can go and it doesn’t kick at all. I think there is more to do with having a can on there at the correct gas setting rather than the mass of the system, just my thought tho.
Very good point. I look at it as wanting to change the least amount of variables possible. I appreciate the robustness and consistency of a full mass carrier opposed to a low or variable mass carrier. Super cool to tune your rifle to where it almost deletes recoil. For this rifle, I just wanted it to function over a wide array of ammunition and adverse conditions, but not beat up on itself too hard. I bet that low mass option is a dream to shoot though.
@@hkrifleworks I understand where you are coming from. 6mm arc is strange in the way that I feel like it has less recoil on a suppressor than a muzzle break. Most of the time the suppressor has slightly more recoil than the break?
I would also agree that a suppressor has slightly more recoil than an effective brake. I guess it may depend on the specific set up and component selection of the rifle. I shoot suppressed 99.9% of the time, but I will pull my can off next time and see if there is a change in recoil impulse on my 6 ARC rifles
The magazine and retaining system for the original Axis 2 is the greatest piece of rubbish ever made . Absolutely useless
Agreed. I immediately ditch any proprietary systems like that for AICS for that exact reason. With the exception of some CTR mag Tikkas
I did a search today and stumbled across this video. I install my KRG Bravo this morning and was having the same results. Originally I was running the Boyds Pro Varmint and was averaging 1/2” MOA and now with the KRG I’m averaging 1”moa. It’s still early in the game and need to dive deeper into what going on. I noticed this is a year old video, but did you ever resolve your issue?
I was incredibly surprised as well to see accuracy degradation with the Bravo. I had to shim the action screw to prevent the barrel from touching the barrel channel. Changing torque didn’t seem to help much (just shot bad or better, didn’t really shoot great). The Kidd bolt was the biggest improvement in the accuracy department but didn’t really do better than the factory rifle
Great overview, thank you!
Thanks for watching!
i had been looking for a deer rifle for my wife to use as mine is a 24” 7mag. borrowed an axis 1 in .243 and she liked it (me too other than the trigger.)i kept my eyes peeled for one and soon after came across an axis 2 ss in 6.5cm at walmart for less than $300. i already had a spare prostaff 3-9 laying around. grabbed some cheap weaver “grand slam” rings they had on the shelf (think they are supposed to be shotgun rings, actually) first ammunition i tried was hornady american whitetail in whichever weight was the lightest and that raggedy little bastard shot .625 with it. i know you aren’t talking deer rifles so this isn’t totally applicable to the video. i also realize that all of them aren’t going to perform the same. just sharing to speak towards the capability of the axis action. that is nuts, to me, for a $300 rifle.
Isn’t it crazy how precise some of these budget rifles can be? I’m very interested in testing the Axis II Pro and that 110 Trail Hunter for your reasons above
@@hkrifleworks it is crazy. 20 years ago you’d be lucky if $300 got you 1.5.” i’m actually here watching your video in search of precision rifle info. i’d like to get one to mess around with. started looking at the axis precision, then the 110 chassis model. then the elite precision. then i thought “hell if i’m gonna spend $2500 i also need to consider the tact a1 and the g.a. pinnacle… now i don’t know what i want at all 😂
How did you end up liking the Riton 5 conquer optic? Looking at picking one up.
I like them. Go with the 2023 or newer though. All my 2022’s have broken under very light use. Have seen some inconsistencies with the 2023’s like mag and parallax rings not feel great but they’ve all functioned and tracked well. They’re great if you can find them for a good deal
Did you have that painted or did it come like that because I’m wondering where the magazine tube cover was painted in camo when you got it or you did that yourself?
I spray painted it. It was black originally
I have the Axis II Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor. I added a bolt lift kit, swaped out the allen screws in the cheek riser adjustment for knobs, Cerakoted the forearm OD green to match the rest of the rifle, changed the grip, and added a brake and suppressor system. I had an Arken 6-24 on it as it seemed appropriate for the price range of the rifle but now it sports a Bushnell Tactical Elite XRS 4.5-30 due to how well it shoots. I just finished my load development and ran ten groups of three rounds each at 100 yards. The average was .340 with several in the quarter-inch range. I belive the gun actually shoots better but this is about all I am capable of shooting with just a bipod and rear bag. I have some high-end custom-built rifles that don't shoot as well. Makes me wonder if spending all that money is because it's necessary or just trying to be tacticool.
The creed more is junk and over priced on anything
Isn’t it crazy how precise some of these budget rifles can be? Sounds like you got a great rifle. I’m with you. I appreciate a high end custom rifle but some of these more budget rifles can shoot like a house on fire.
I love the CM class cartridges. 6.5 and 25 Creed have been great. Same with 6mm Creed but the barrel goes a tad bit fast for my liking
@@hkrifleworks doesn't make sensd.. a house on fire..?
@idecidenotyou It’s an idiom meaning “extremely well”
What is the company that manufactures the most premium barrels for AR-10 and AR-15????? I was looking "" DEADSHOT BARREL "" and "" FAXON FIRENARMS ""
Is this the most in unit quantity or SKU?
@@hkrifleworks for Build one AR premium
I call BULLSHIT on the feel of the trigger
Would you care to elaborate further, Patrick?
About crimp I've had alot of experience on that and I don't crimp I have had the bullet jam deeper but I've only had that problem with really high BC bullets with a needle type tip like berger 80gr but my AR's don't care for the real heavy bullets anyway.
Good mention. Do you remember if you had good neck tension on those higher BC bullets? Was it the 80 grain VLD Bergers? Out of curiosity, was COAL over mag length? Setback can definitely be scary
@hkrifleworks I don't remember Exactly which bullet I was having problems with. I have so many different ones. I've even tried the heavy bullets seated way past maximum mag length feed them one at a time and just couldn't get the real heavy to shot real good in my AR's now my bolt gun loves 80gr sierra or berger
Interesting. My trigger is much lighter and smoother than your stock one. I agree with you on the sights, they're great but the height is ridiculous. I run a small CCX can so I can still see over it, but its very close.
Interesting. I didn’t shoot mine much before swapping so it may have gotten better with time. LTT trigger turned out great though so no complaints on my end. Sounds like a solid setup!
Got it in 233 , added furniture,, 300 yrds , brilliant.
Fantastic setup for the cost that’s for sure
What barrel ?
Douglas on this one
I recently build an AR-10 style rifle build on the Aero Precision M5E1 upper and lower receivers plus 15" floating hand guard. For a barrel I'm running a Faxon 20" 1:10 twist with 308 Winchester chamber. I have also built a 243 Winchester. Both are quite different from each other. My goal for the 308 is to go toe to toe or even surpass the Knights Armament M110 SASS for far less money. I am limited by the SR25 magazine for COL of my cartridges. Sierra 200gr Match Kings don't have the super secant ogive of the 208gr Bergers in 7.62mm/0.308". So I won't be able to get the BC as high as with a bolt gun. But I'm still going to exceed what is available from factory loads. The Federal Gold Cup Match and the Winchester M118 Service Grade both use 175gr SMKs. I'm told the Winchesters use Alliant Reloader 15 powder. I don't know if Federal does as well. It will be interesting to compare the two. I plan to load the 200 SMKs to get that little bit of extra distance along with using the newer Alliant Reloader TS 15.5 powder with Federal 215GM primers. It should be interesting to see if I can top the factory ammo with my hand loads. It would be cool to be able to keep up with equivalent priced bolt guns, although I don't expect that to happen. I am running a 4.5lb single stage trigger that I find quite light and crisp. The reticule doesn't move when I drop the hammer.
an if the bolt doesn't close assembled on a bullet it appears the head space is to small and needs reamed some more??
Needs to be measured with a gauge only. Only if it fails to close on a “go” which would indicate headspace is too short
Enjoyed the video, and honestly prefer long form content so don't feel bad about the length for my sake! One thing I've noticed in my precision journey on gas vs bolt action is the difference in trigger timing and movement. Bolt action triggers are usually less moving parts and from break to bang is very fast. On gas guns like ARs, I notice the slightest delay and movement as the sear breaks and the hammer swings and impacts the firing pin. So break to bang takes a bit longer and has more movement in the rifle. My personal experience has been that semi-autos require more solid follow through and natural point of aim from me as a shooter, whereas bolt actions are a little more forgiving for me. That said, I can't stop having fun and accepting the challenge with my gas precision gun.
Great points and totally agree! Lock times can be crazy quick on a bolt gun compared to a gas gun. Not much more satisfying than leaning into a gas gun for precision
looks great, think i'll give it a shot
Thanks for watching and best of luck!

The savior we needed but do not deserve 🤪
thanks for the video, I have this in 308 Win and have added an MDT muzzle break at this point. Looking forward to the bolt upgrades. I have an Arken EP5 on it.
@@karlwaugh985 how do you like that MB so far? I'm thinking of getting one, as well as a bolt lift kit.
Thanks for watching! Sounds like a great rig
Have you done a 2lb spring upgrade aswell as drill out your gas exchange holes
The MB has been great
What comp and supressor combo are you using
Dead air brake with a SilencerCo omega on this one. Very much enjoying my Nomad L for best suppression lately
Can you try it and let me know cause if i cant ghost load it with that lifter im just going to keep the original
I’m a tad late but have seen multiple videos showing that you can. I’ll give it a shot though
Can you ghost load it with that lifter
I’ve never tried it, but have seen others comment that you potentially can do so
Just buy a T2 and no worries on a weak optic
Agreed. Have a handful of Comp M4/5’s and had a few T2’s. They’re bulletproof. A T2 wasn’t in the budget for this specific shotgun but may have to bump up if the new one holosun doesn’t hold up
Nice shot what distance? Guessing 600 meters.
Thanks! I think this was around 800yds if I remember correctly.
I have a CZ-457 Varmit MTR. Wonderfully accurate with the right ammo. With the stock trigger, 2 lbs 14 oz was the best I could achieve. With an Amazon compression spring assortment kit for about $10, I was able to find one that fit. Mine now consistently breaks at 14 ounces. All I replaced was the trigger spring. Nothing else. Considering all the springs that I received from Amazon in that kit, my CZ-457 received an upgrade for about 20 cents. You think Yodave wants you to know about this?
I have a few buddies that have done the same in terms of finding the optimal spring rate. You can absolutely get these for pennies on the dollar compared to the yodave etc…
Weight difference?
Just shy of a pound maybe
Would you suggest an appropriate scope or two for this rifle? Thanks
Of course. Fitting the full featured but value trend. I think the Arken EP5 5-25, Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25 or the new 2023 and newer Riton 5 Conquer would be great options. Let me know what you go with!
If your rifle is of the 6.5 CREEDMORE chambering PRIMARY ARMS has a series called APOLLO. Wicked fast ranging/hold over to 1,000 yards.
Question for you. The Butt stock adjustment screws. There's 2 screws on the back to loosen and remove LOP spacers. But the upper screw is to long when the spacers are removed. When the screws were reinstalled, the screw pulled the upper brass insert out because the screw is to long without the spacers. Do you have any suggestions for fixing this problem? Thanks
That happened to me also on my top insert. I may just epoxy or bed the insert back in. My bottom one is holding though
@@hkrifleworks update. I contacted MDT and it appears they are sending me what I need to take care of this. I'll wait and see what happens. They have been responsive, which is great.
@@WA-eg7ft the same thing happened to me, there is a shorter screw supplied in the bag with the manual.
@@karlwaugh985 well first off thanks to MDT for sending me the shorter screw along with an entirely new part that the brass screw receiver. Excellent customer service. Truth be told I bought it off consignment. Excellent overall condition, but didn't get the instructions or the shorter screw.
Do you have the links for the bolt lift kit and handle?
So I just purchased a axis ll precision, pick it up this Saturday(2 days away) and was wondering what I could do to it to improve it even though I’ve been told it comes stock as a very dependable accurate rifle and your video was helpful. I will be doing the lift kit and bolt handle after I shoot it and get a good feel for the rifle. I will also be doing a supresser as well. I’m very excited, this is my first bolt action and can’t wait to get out to the range. Thanks for the info and thanks for the informative video!
Right on and thanks for the kind words. I would definitely start with the bolt lift kit, trigger, capable optic and you’re set! Always like to have a good front bag/bipod and a rear bag for support too
So as for the optics I purchased a vortex venom and for the bipod I went with the magpul. I bought that stuff on Friday before picking it up. I still need to get a couple of those sand bags.
Got a savage access II. Got it at Walmart in Naples, Florida for $388 out the door. As you know, the trigger sucks. I ended up getting a Jard trigger. After playing with several spring loads, I ended up setting it up at 11 ounces. All my 700 style rifles run a diamond trigger from trigger Tech at 10 1/2 ounces. I am very comfortable with a pool. We never had an issue love the Jard trigger for my savage. It cannot be compared to a trigger tech, but it runs good. Usually I only buy 700 action rifles. This one when I bought it for my kid when he was very young it was a good price.
Likewise and appreciate the comment. I’ll absolutely have to give the Jard a shot. Have heard great things
Couldnt be happier with my Axis II. I bought the 18" heavy barrel 6.5cm and dropped it in the oryx chassis. Desh bolt lift kit and anarchy bolt handle and knob. I love it and its shoots very tight groups. I cant understand why so many people hate on the Savage Axis line? Everyone ive shot or seen shoots very well
Agreed! A little tweaking and it’s extremely solid for the money. All the ones I’ve seen have been shooters that’s for sure!
I put a few of those Desh bolt lift kits in my Savages 👍. Also installed the extractor/ejector upgrade kits. Soft bolt cycling no longer drops cases in/on ejection port or mag. Even loaded cartridges fling out nicely. Got my replacement tactical bolt handle (O.E.M.)from Midway USA for $25. First one I got was from Glades and stuck me for over $60. All upgrades combined (less Glades) ran just under $100 per bolt. Quite happy with results.
Right on! Just a little tweaking really does make the difference in these rifles. Wonder why savage doesn’t start using (or design) a similar setup to the Desh from the factory
Why close dust cover?
Habit I guess?
I just want to confirm that this mod is functioning with out malfunction. I want to do this on my A300. But I am in contact with Beretta support but they do not concur that the 1301 lifter is compatible with the A300. I am doublechecking as they may not understand that I am talking about the Beretta 1301 Tactical Carrier, Pro Style lifter/carrier.
It has been working without issue for me. Beretta actually suggested this to me and let me know the parts are interchangeable
@@hkrifleworks Thanks for the response. I was able to get in touch with Beretta Support and they confirmed compatibility as well. The part is on its way.
Is that an Anarchy or sterk bolt handle?
Sterk on this rifle but I have an Anarchy on another CTR. Prefer Sterk but AO is pretty solid too
@@hkrifleworks does the AO stick out further from the stock than the sterk? Or are they swept back at the same angle and same distance from the stock?
Sorry for the late response. So they’re pretty comparable but they are in different chassis. Sterk definitely has that more AI look but Anarchy is definitely close. Similar sweep and length. I prefer Sterk but definitely not upset with the Anarchy. Very close
Please comment on your bullet seating depth regarding maximum mag length. I ask because it appears your bolt action has a detachable magazine that maybe also maximum cartridge length limited. Unless you single feed only. Good discussion.
Thanks for watching! That’s correct, my gas gun COAL is at 2.245” where my bolt gun is at 2.270”. Both 108 grain ELD-M’s. Gas gun is at book length and bolt is .020” off the lands in my rifle. The detachable mag is a modified AICS 308 based mag with a spacer kit and I have adjusted the feed lips to feed PPC cartridges. I also have some specific MDT 6ARC AICS mags that work well.
I prefer a bolt action for precision shots.
I tend to also
How do i make my rifle cycle that smooth and not being so hard to bring the lever up
The desh bolt lift kit has been the best 20 bucks I’ve spent to help out with the stiff factory lift
I’m waiting on my parts but I’m building and AR-10 with a Creedmore 6.5 24” carbon fiber barrel and match set trigger and receiver, adjustable gas black and PRS buttstock, once it’s built and fired, I’ll come back and tell you how it felt. 😊
Sounds like a great setup! Excited to hear how it shoots!
@@hkrifleworks it’s built
@@hkrifleworks I was planning to go out and shoot the last 2 weekends, but of course it’s rained everyone of my days off.
Always the case haha. Hope you were able to beat the rain and get it out!
With all the additions might as well get. Different rifle. No?
I generally agree. However the base rifle is fully serviceable and very feature rich for the price in my opinion. Some of these upgrades are also not very cost prohibitive. Base rifle with the 20 dollar bolt lift kit and potentially trigger would be awesome for the cost
Some folks do it over time. Can't drop 4k at once.
They definitely do purchase over time. This rifle was just over 1500 bucks fully complete minus the suppressor and bipod
Hey, what tape do you use to wrap the scope?
This is a self adhering camo ace bandage or vet wrap. I think it’s the mcnett camo form specifically. It’s nice because it doesn’t leave that glue residue and only sticks to itself
Forster says if bolt closes on No-Go, but does not close on Field gage,,,, The rifle is still serviceable.
That is correct. I look for all my new rifles to pass go and no-go. Field gauge is absolute max and would be considered unsafe if failed. As a civilian that isn’t keeping service rifles functioning as long as possible, I have field gauges but do not use them unless it is a well used or collectible item. Personal preference but I don’t like excessive headspace between no-go and field lengths.
@@hkrifleworks safety first, makes sense to me. Thanks for video, well presented 👍👍
