3 Overlooked Tips For Better Travel Photos
As a new photographer I really liked this way of explanation, espcially the layers of light. I have all the other f stops, I want to learn to use them, and looking at my photos and recognising where I could have perhaps done things different is in part down to this video. Moving forward now into filming this has also added more thought about my lens shopping list. Thank you man.
Love your F 1.8 Footage
It is solid advice. The wide open aperture can definitely be a crutch and relied on too much. I use it all the time, but I started using it when it was not necessary and it just made me miss shots or not really think enough of the entire composition. People getting offended and not understanding the message are just not critical thinkers.
Was gonna click on this anyway but jumpscared by Aberystwyth when I moused over
😅
We all suffer from Toneh addiction, right Casey?
I got my film in an old car that was about to get crushed
laughs in bmpcc which gives me at best F10 on my kit lens haha (2,88 Crop x F3.5) But as you said, I get a lot of clean sharp images even with 1080p
I totally agree with the second and third points. I think, especially on youtube and other blogs this obsession with chasing down the perfect film camera and there seems to be a lot of people feeding this idea. I'm getting close to not reading blogs and watching RUclips because I'm tired of hearing about Leicas. Honestly I don't think it matters what camera you use, it has way more to do with the film and how you process it. As for Instagram- it's a big flaming garbage heap of uninspiring crap. The artists have all left it and what's left is a community of idiots blasting their crazy. Instagram inspired me to permanently leave all social media platforms and I don't miss it.
I think one of the largest sins here is the lack of two things: technical knowledge and artistic vision. and honestly, social media is the main cause for that, I think. you see people just wandering about, taking lots and lots of snaps while waffling on about how their photos are like a painting ("the tones!") and this and that when in reality there's no discernible vision and a clear lack of knowledge. everything goes as long as you can market it. instead of focussing on skills, the focus often lies on gear. this expensive camera, that brilliant lens, etc etc. it's as if you would say to a restaurant chef "the food was excellent, which pans did you use to cook it?" - no one would say that, the food is not dependent on the pans but the expertise of the chef. those who actually promote proper skills rarely reach the popularity of the formerly mentioned, staying at anywhere between 100 to 5000 subscribers here on youtube, for example. it's a shame, really!
Here speaks the voice of reason - I also see a lot of content from photographers who have something interesting to say, own interesting gear, travel to exotic locations and take pretty ordinary photos. I often think their best images are on their video feed rather than on the stills.
On my way to work two days ago, the moon was in perfect position behind the local church - didn't have my camera. Brought it the next day for this one shot but the lighting wasn't as interesting. Lesson learned, always have my camera with me!
I'm reminded of an exchange in the movie boyhood. I'm a musician, not a photographer, but it stuck with me. Mr. Turlington : Who do you wanna be, Mason? What do you wanna do? Mason : I wanna take pictures. Make art. Mr. Turlington : Any dipshit can take pictures, Mason. Art, that's special. What can you bring to it that nobody else can? Mason : That's what I'm trying to find out. Mr. Turlington : Try harder.
I agree with a lot of what you’re saying. I started studying images that I admired and they all had deep depths of field (expect portraits) I shoot a lot of film and I think that medium thrives with deeper depths of field.
I’ve been a digital shooter and this year I really returned to film. Shot an estimated 20-30 rolls this year from 0. I look at film like I look at the rest of my gear. They’re al just tools. I don’t think any photo is better or special because it’s on film but film does have its own unique characteristics. Call me crazy but I love the photos I’ve taken. That won’t stop me from being hungry to improve… anybody who things they have nothing left to learn is deeply mistaken. That said, I don’t think a hard and fast rule that if you think your photos are good you will stagnate and be a bad photographer
You can NEVER see a FILM photograph on RUclips or any computer! Period, full stop, NEVER! ALL photographs you see here are DIGITAL! A photograph that was originally taken on a film camera has been DIGITIZED for you to see it here on RUclips or on any computer.
For me, going back to film has improved my photography in both mediums. I am more aware of the light when ISO isn't auto. My 135 compositions aren't necessarily better than when I shoot digital. But my indoor shots of people come out much more to my liking, just on account of the way HP5+ looks when pushed. And that feeling when you're hanging up the film to dry is a huge motivator to go out and shoot, while the cost is a motivator to slow down. Both factors triple when shooting slide film. 1/6 good pictures on a roll of 135 1/2 on 120 9/10 on 4x5 1/20 digital That translates to 6, 6 and 1 good images for the same film area and cost, and an hour sorting through garbage on digital, which I don't enjoy, compared to an hour developing and an hour scanning, which I do enjoy.
you forget, I am using an antiquated medium with expired film, expired developer, a barely functioning development tank, and a camera with no automation, and for my medium format camera, literally no settings. All of these make my film horrible at every step, so its not my fault all my images are horrible (yes it is)
99% of my film photos are crap but they can't really be deleted like you do on your dig (if you even need to).
...also good photographers generally don't publish their shit photos
Film offers the ultimate deletion option, if the film (negative or transparencies) and any prints are deliberately destroyed there is no software solution to recover those deleted images.
True-even with me. I’ve made crap images, as well as good images, on both film and digital. It’s not the medium, it’s the photographer.
Having tried a few rolls lately, I can assure you that film does NOT make for better photos by itself. My pictures are crud.
Ah Conor, it’s a bitter pill to swallow
That is, they are both compositionally and technically bad, with terrible exposure and focus.
@ sounds like you nailed film photography 😅
If you want to be interesting or artistic, especially for yourself, break the rules. Doesnt guarantee you will make money, but it can also be the most rewarding thing both on a monetary (if you're lucky) and satisfactory standpoint. Rules are meant for making money with your art. At that point it isnt even your art, just the most accessible and standard things, but thats the easiest to consume. Again, you can get lucky, just keep trying.
I am old and got my first digital camera in 2000 at the age of 42. When I look at film photos on Flick I see wrongly exposed photos, photos with light leaks, half photos from start or end of a roll with no clear subject, and I wonder why they are posted. I would discard such images. Like film photos are good, just because they are shot on film. I think the same rules apply to analog and digital photos. I remember how I used to drool over the gorgeous pictures in photo magazines when I was young and knew nothing about the internet or digital cameras.
Good vid bro!
🔥
I love your channel and videos, especially this video. I began taking photos during the pandemic with a camera I inherited from my mom a few years earlier. It was an old film camera (Pentax k1000) with a 50mm lens. I had nothing else to do in lockdown than take photos and send them out for developing. I just took photos of my wife/kids/plants/whatever I found interesting on walks. I really had no one to show my photos to except my subjects (wife, kids, and other family who I ran into). It's only been in the last year or so, when I began watching RUclips videos on photography because I wanted to learn how to take better photos. The price of film is really a detriment to taking more photos. But, I like the "feel" of an older film camera. They are kind of heavy, and they have all the fun dials to turn and settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) to learn about. I guess, what drives my photography, is that I like to take pictures of things that interest me but may not be interesting to other people. But, just as with any hobby, I strive to get better at it and I hope I do get better at it.
Thanks man! I’m glad you love shooting! I hope you can keep shooting, because it is so expensive now for sure! Keep it up dude 🔥
Thank you! So many people need to hear this! This is exactly the reason why people put fake film borders on their digital photos (maybe my biggest single photography pet peeve), as though there were something magical about the process of film that makes composition or storytelling better, or somehow suddenly gives the photographer a clear and distinct voice.
damn, GRE level of difficulty to understand this sentence.
Another great video! One thing I found on my journey was taking pictures for the sake of taking a picture, especially when starting out. The process was fun, but I’d be disappointed with my work, now I take my time, and more often than not I chose to not bother taking the picture unless I feel like that it’ll be a good photo or worthy experiment. Far cheaper too.
A big thing that I learned was how to take the picture in my minds eye or frame it and see if it’s worth it or not. Obviously when you shoot digital you can just see how it is, but personally, that makes me a more lazy photographer. It’s much better if I’m really thinking about what I’m shooting and what I wanna get. 🌞🌞🌞
massively agree!
The feeling is normal and it never goes away. I've been making a living as photographer for 20 years. Every few years I look back and my work and I also think my past work is "sh*&, even when my clients rave about it. 😂 I think when we seek to evolve and learn, we will always feel that way and that's OK. Is what keep us inspired and hungry for more.
Yeah I agree! If you don’t think your old work is shit then you’re not progressing! It’s a good sign!
Got priced out. Portra 400 in 120 is over $1.25 a click and that doesn’t include developing/scanning/printing. Instax wide is $0.30 cheaper for god sakes 😞 Went to a used 50R for $1400 with some adapted Pentax 645 lenses and with a few presets I'm quite delighted, and after just 500 digital clicks, you've broken even with Portra 400.
Yeah, pricing is definitely a big barrier now which sucks! The main thing is finding what you can shoot regularly and enjoy 🔥
that's certainly true but I think that this offers an opportunity to learn: don't just snap, take photos that are worthwhile to take. then, it'll take quite a long while to break even with a digital (still, it will happen!) if I'm not willing to set up a tripod, take out the spot meter, etc etc, the photo is simply not worth taking, that's how I'm working. I can easily get by with 2-4 sheets of film for a daytrip and, regarding the price of portra: look up the price of velvia...
not a photographer here o/ But I just like taking 'purdy' photos. To me I just like to 'capture' the pretty things or maybe views, I usually want to take a still of the thing that I am seeing, sometimes it just happens that it follows some photography theories.
I take photos not to show off or share with anyone, it's my own personal recollection. I will take the photos in a way that embodies how I feel in the moment.
You can 'home in' but you can't 'hone in'. 'To hone' is to sharpen. You can hone an axe or a chisel or a Knife but you can't 'home' them. It's a common malapropism. You can hone i.e 'sharpen' , your photography skills. However, aside from your repeated use of 'hone', an interesting take on your photography mindset. Thank you. You have quite a collection of interesting images. One thing I would add is when revisiting a familiar place consider the light and ask yourself 'How would this look in different lighting conditions?'
Uhm actually it is "sherpa" your skills as it is like climbing a mountain and you become better at it.
solid vid <333
being original is the best trait, not only in photography
do you have these photos on your website? 3:02
1. Subject 2. Time of day (10AM-3PM; generally garbage light for photography) 3. Color (or for b&w; contrast) Those are the 3 most important. And to quote my old man, “you want a better photo, put someone you care about in it.”
I like landscape photos because they don’t have people in them.
Awesome video mate. Really relatable and some solid recommendations to help. Keep up the vreat work
Cheers man! 🙏
I don't F8 this!
Great stuff Max. Couldn’t agree more on some of the points you make about how to get out of a rut and see things differently.
Thanks Chris! Good to hear 🔥
Great video!!!
Thanks Jay 👍
great video its GOLD for me.
1:29 My parents will tell me my work is sh*t af no wonder how good it is 😂😂😂
Thanks for this!! Great inspiration 🙂
If you actually like taking "nice" photos, I don't see nothing wrong with that. Yes, you shouldn't feel compelled to make them but that goes both ways. You are the artist - you decide.
That’s it 🌞🔥
This last 2 years I’ve carried a camera with me everywhere I go. Sometimes I won’t even take a picture. But I do there literally my favorite
Yes mate! It just takes away that barrier to shoot for sure 🔥
So real
Love the video and the advice! Thanks so much for sharing! So easy to get lost in the algorithms and social media these days. Turning photography into something more concrete and less online really made it easier to take the kind of pictures I want and finding my own style.
🔥🔥
As much as I love the background being “a mess of nothing” for portrait-style shots of people and animals… filling the frame, with the rule of thirds for eyes and a bokeh background kind of is photography in easy mode. I have noticed that I find shooting like that easier than larger scenes and have been making an effort to shoot with more backgrounds. I love how you explained the shadow-side. It pairs nicely with an idea from another video about how “light should wrap around objects to create depth”. The whole wrapping idea has been a game changer for how I understand lighting (as I simply didn’t get it at all before that). Thanks for these tips!
I like how it's suitable for almost every art and non art work
“Is Nikon making subpar gear, even the cheapest ones? 😂”
