How Much Do HVAC Techs Make? Not What You Think...
I go over some of the truth about how much HVAC technicians make. It's not always as good as you think but sometimes it's better than you thought it would be. It's not too crazy to make six figures in this industry once you're a little bit established. I also talk a little bit about union pay and how that differs from non-union pay. Thanks for watching.

How To Get A FREE HEAT PUMP Installed - HEEHRA/HEAR Rebate Program Explained
Просмотров 48121 день назад
I explain how to get a free heat pump installed by the government. It's not as hard as you'd think if you find a contractor willing to go to the process of the rebates with you. There are no catches except for the fact that you need to do an installation that qualifies and you have to be within the income brackets to qualify for the installation yourself. This program is a nationwide program bu...
The WORST Thing That Can Happen On An HVAC Install...

We replaced this water source heat pump and the board that came with the unit was bad out of the box. It ended up taking us three weeks to get back out to the job which just barely happened. New board worked perfectly and I'm questioning all new equipment that we buy in terms of quality. I've been doing a track for a long time this is the first time this has happened to me. #hvac #hvacinstall #...

We had a pretty big job here where we add a two zone mini split to the downstairs and then replace and reduct the upstairs unit. The upstairs unit we replaced with a Bosch heat pump and the downstairs mini split is a Mitsubishi system. I'm happy with how the installation turned out. Let me know what you guys think. #hvac #hvaclife #hvacinstall #bosch #mitsubishi #minisplit #heatpump
Watch an HVAC Apprentice Replace His FIRST Blower Motor - Hilarious

Tag along with me and Kyle as we replace a blower motor on a commercial rooftop in the San Diego area. This was a fun little job when we had a morning open I had time to just let Kyle attempt to do the motor pretty much all by himself. We had done the other one on the roof the week before and I had walked Kyle and another apprentice through the steps to replacing this exact motor on this exact ...

Nitrogen Pressure Test Basics. Find Refrigerant Leaks EASILY. Example System With Leak Found
Are you guys brazing?
Yes
Im a 29 year old Union HVAC technician in so cal at 42.00 per hr about to get a journeyman position in a few months with pay raise to 53.00 per hour with 10 years in the trade , doing installation and service of residential and commercial units not to bad
Watersource heat pumps usually fail due to refrigerant leaks in the coax coil I would have definitely replaced the hoses and added ball valves and strainer
I had to fix a leak in my condenser on my mini split Diakin. Winter freeze compressed the bottom copper tubes and developed a pin hole leak.
Deferred maintenance is a fascinating subject
The best explanation of a stat I’ve ever heard Love you man
EXPAINED ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING in a way that anyone would learn anything! Explained absolutely nothing about basic anything. Welcome to California!
Good to have you back here old man
I have worked in hvac for 18 years thinking about opening my own business
Allow me to talk you out of it. Jk it's not that bad. If you are looking for advice on it you can call me
I started at 9 an hour in 2010. Minimum wage was 8. I had gone to trade school so i had a head start. Now people are getting 15 an hour for minimum wage and it grinds my gears. Im making enough but looking at 15 to nuke burgers at McDonald's makes enough less and less. I don't have a plan to combat inflation but feel like lots of employees ask for alot they haven't earned and some companies gouge customers just as bad. If people wanna start their own business and put the effort in thats great. Im not selling stuff or managing people and don't want to.
Yeah I start people with no experience at $25 here. I am in California but prices of everything is going up
Bosch are now comprised of mostly or entirely of Chineseium alloy parts. If you are going to sell and install them, stock up on parts because they will take time to get. Think “Slow boat from China”
I've only been installing them for a year and a half but I have yet to have a single part failure on them. I mean it's bound to happen but it hasn't yet
to add in on this. I have a coworker in a hvac controls company. lead tech or close to it, he makes probably around $57 an hour. his role is service
My electric/hvac guy does 32 under a big franchise. No BS I'm interested in real numbers
I’ll be 25 next month been in the trade since I was 19. I’m in central Cali, I’ve been tenpted to get out of the valley and go to the bay or southern Ca 👀 I’ve always done purely service/ maintenance very little install.
I love this trade and I’m always looking to expand I’d be willing to relocate but I can only imagine how expensive cost of living is out there 😅
If you're seriously considering it feel free to call
Does this mean they won't install if you have a gas stove?
Need to go to commercial , residential pay sucks no matter where you go .
I mean yes and no. Commercial in general typically pays more but residential can pay just as good from my experience. We do both
You don't have to rob people to make good pay. Learn the trade and get your journeyman and master license.
At 4:16 - are the fresh kids entering the field that are 1) highly intelligent, 2) good communicators, and 3) motivated towards success the ones making over 6 figures after several years into their career (assuming a HCOL city)? Will these same success-driven kids make close to $200k after 10+ years into their career assuming a regular 40 hour week? I only ask because intelligent and motivated kids like these are highly sought after by employers and have many career choices, including going to college and working a high paid office job (in a HCOL city) with additional benefits that might be less common in the skilled trades, such as 401k matching, more generous vacation and sick policy, hybrid work week, flexibility to easily take care of a sick family member and lastly (partially) paid time off for the birth of a child.
I make $28 an hour as a slot technician in Las Vegas and work full-time four days a week.
55$ on the check union in Oregon , full benifit are around 89$ truck and power tools provided dues are only 40$ a week and one 60$ monthly payment
Nice
I make 39 an hour non union. Was union however wasn’t feeling the brother stuff. very weird stuff had to put my hand on the union bible and say I wasn’t here to overthrow the government. Only legal monopoly allowed.
Been working for the same small family owned company for almost 40 years.we have been a Carrier dealer since 1952. The quality of Carrier has gotten so bad.installing 25 SEER infinity heat pumps and the inverter boards bad out the box.ordering parts is outrageous also.
I knew carrier entry level equipment had experienced a big drop off in quality but I hadn't heard bad things about their infinity systems
20y old, got a year residential experience, NC starting pay i got into was 20/h. I'm wondering how ppl make 6 figures, the way I'm seeing it if you're not a owner you ain't making it. Was looking into commercial but i like how residential is besides pay and so much sales depended.
There's good companies out there you've just got to find them
If you pay those two almost 30………. Let me put in my application with a minimum 50 starting point
I would pay the right person $50 an hour
How much do you make now?
Im in Hvac School right now. Is there any advice?
I could write an essay on advice I would give somebody that's just barely getting into HVAC. You can call me if you'd like
@SurfBrosHVAC Ill have to take you up on that offer
Union Gig is really pretty solid. They cram left wing political crap down your throats sometimes but unions definitely help workers rights overall in the area.
The union seems like a good gig. I would recommend it to people new to the trade especially if they are a little older and planning on taking it serious as a career
If you think your guys will stick with you, give them a percentage of profits a year! Keep them happy and consistently making more per year. Send them to training. I started in resi non union most I heard someone getting paid was $50-60per hr with 401K health and a few other benefits. I def didint know my worth and topped at $29 but was offered more to work at other companys. Just wasnt interested. Now im over $50per hr ,union, great benis, and will top out over $70 as Journeyman. Benis and pension make it more per hr when you think about it. Really helps as sing father. BUT charge for your work bro ! Yall can kill it non union! And should!
Profit sharing is in the near future. Just need to be established enough to turn some legit profits then the plan is to start that
If you do residential you won't make much being an honest tech. Commercial, industrial, refrigeration are where it's at. Residential is pretty much all sales now.
While you are generally right I don't think that has to be the case. I am trying to grow a business where we can get paid for being honest and it is slowly coming to fruition
@SurfBrosHVAC I'm sure not every company operates being dishonest, but most residential companies now are going towards more unit change outs and upgrades. The technicians are more salesman than techs. I'm constantly fighting with my manager about pushing the up sells. Convincing Ms Jones who makes $1200 a month to purchase a $1500 air scrubber. It's Soo annoying
One man and a van can easily bring you 6 figures, but you need to be able to make that jump
Yes easily. If you can manage your schedule well then you can make over 2k every day you're in the field. Fun times when it's just you on your own too
I want to get there in the near future. Been a residential tech for about 5 years now and I'm tired of working for other people.
Union here in DC is $55 an hour
Before benefits? Yeah I have no hate on union at all. I think it's a better fit for some than others and for me I don't know that it would've worked when I got into the trade. If I was just getting into it now I would start in the union for sure
In residential, your pay depends on what kind of calls dispatch gives you. 🙃
Yeah that is sometimes how it goes on commission. I remember being pissed all week when other guys are making bank and I'm getting two year old maintenances where they want you to sell air scrubbers and surge protectors
@@SurfBrosHVAC Worked for the Ontime experts and they were just sales techs all commission based. Got rid of that and now with an honest company now and the ability to actually learn the equipment and service with an actual hourly wage with more pay. Don't regret it at all😄(residential tech)
How’s your quality of life after transitioning to an owner from an employee. I’m in Florida and you are right, pay down here is shit, working towards buying fathers company when the time comes. Don’t want to sell my soul for lead tech position at 22/hr. Been in trade for 5 years now.
I think maybe taking over an existing business would be better if it is already operating smoothly. My work life balance is horrendous and if I had a family it would be borderline not doable unless I had a very on board spouse that was down to handle all or most of the back end stuff. Meeting with suppliers, brand representatives, clients, prospective employees, other companies, etc. Just a whole lot of things that eat your time away. For me I still prefer it but honestly if I had found a solid company before then I would've preferred to keep working for someone else for a little while longer
Florida is bad for pay , but the cost of living in socal is very high. Hopefully Salt Lake city is better than FL
You moving to Utah?
@@SurfBrosHVAC yes , at least there is mountains to snowboard there lol. Have an interview today with the company
I was gonna say the same thing. I was an HVAC tech in FL and was paid low. That has been my experience too. I moved on to building engineer and get a more respectable salary in FL.
Great video! Real talk is always appreciated
It would be pretty funny if I was the replacement Jonny😅
I would die
i really like the content made for hvac guys. I personally like how you show things like rebates programs and how you advertise into things like yelp and reddit. Im also a small hvac business owner trying to stay consistently busy all year so i can be more hands off. Keep up the good work
24 years in business. It’s been very slow since May. Slowest year other than year one. Booked up 1-2 days out. Plenty of hvac school graduates, jacklegs and DIYers. People blow money on food, vacations, ATV’s, 4wd lifted trucks with balls hanging from the hitch. HVAC - not so much. Our China/Mexico sourced equipment prices are up 100% in four years. The quality sux. Distributor customer service sux.
We have six figures of work waiting to go in and likely a few hundred thousand of work that will close in the coming weeks. I did not think we would be as busy as we are so I was kind of gearing operations down and then bam. The rebate that just went live in California is definitely helping
We have had trouble hiring people in San Diego especially with experience.
I was slightly compensated for relocation when I came to San Diego as a service tech. At this point I would be open to that if I had to
Super helpful! Thank you
I get where you're going with this, but there is always the "X" factor. Service isn't hard... it is always about logic.
great info, keep the videos coming, got my c-20 recently and love ur videos!
Hey you finally got some proper shirts!
Only 5 cause I had to. I wear them on sales calls
new office?
I think like 4-5 months ago now but it hasn't been in videos much
New spot? Badass.
Been busy
@SurfBrosHVAC that rebate is a great sales point. It's pretty much free for low income people. Great info, brotha.
let us know if you end up selling one of these and be sure to show us the process would love to see it. also who does your embroidery? looks very clean
We have sold 6 HEEHRA jobs so far just waiting on claim approval. I ordered these shirts through Mitsubishi but it is a third party vendor I think. I'll see if/how they do orders apart from Mitsubishi
@@SurfBrosHVAC how long does it take to get paid? do you collect rebate or home owner?
@@revoevom1490 It is all done through the same portal as Tech Clean. So hopefully 3ish weeks after we finish we will get paid. We have not finished an install yet so hard to say
Great channel. Enjoy the straight shooting no bs approach. I’m trying to teach myself about mini splits and I’m slowly getting there. Quick question. Say you had done this the “book way” and recovered what refrigerant was left in the system. After doing that, you would pull a vacuum before weighing in what the data plate says. What I can’t find, is do you pull the vacuum on the empty system with the service valves open? If so, is there anything special you have to do with the EEV or anything in the outdoor unit?
If you do it the "book way" the catch is that you would 100% have to fix the leak. That way it's even capable of vacuuming down. I don't think there's anything special you have to do on single zone units but on multi-zone units some of them have specific pump down
Appreciate it. Yes definitely pressure test with nitrogen. If anything my RUclips hvac education has taught me, is that most of these give problems due to poor flaring technique!
@@salvatoregiovanni8967 If joints are accessible then we always recommend just biting the bullet and paying us to check all flares when one is leaking. The big issue is that a lot of contractors bury the joint in the wall and leave them inaccessible. That's what happened on this system
you ever use a fieldpiece SNCV1 24v ncv tester (or comparable) tester to do it quicker without having to poke leads down in the wire nut not knowing if your in it or not ? just a thought you might have to pull other wires out of way a bit with your fingers so it don't pick up them. maybe I'll try your hopscotch method with ncv and poking and see what happens
The fieldpiece multimeter I have does have an NCV mode which I have used on occasion but I prefer to see the voltage with my own eyes
Thank you for the information
Nice
Clueless......
I thought the same thing. And then we installed one. It was dead quiet. Super easy startup. Now I don’t want to install anything else. Had 37 🔼T with outdoor temp 62 running just heat pump in test most. That’s gas level heat.
Thanks for the insight. We still don't see them around here so feedback like this is awesome
