    All Radius should be 5 pin logic boards. Maxtrac is going to be a bit of a split between 5 pin and 16 pin. All GM300's will be 16 pin. Now you can't always go off the face/control head of the radio as the control heads are mostly interchangible between the GM300/Maxtrac/Radius (I may have put a bunch of GM300 heads on 800 MHz Maxtracs at one point in time to keep customers radios up and/or abunch of Maxtrac heads on GM300s that happened to be narrowband models). Jealous of the B/C revision R2600.

My sons are hams but we want to put up a GMRS repeater as my one son has a callsign for this service and we are trying to find out if we can run a repeater in this service with remote internet inputs.. I am pretty sure it is not allowed but we might be able to separate receive and transmit via a 500 foot long run of private fiber.. But we will have to test and see how far apart at 462mhz the R and T antennas need to be to prevent desense..

    I have the same controller that I bought as non working. Also have one of their interconnects that is the same footprint as the repeaterman. Now trying to get a few parts from Zetron to repair the repeater was like pulling teeth. They did not want to sell me the microprocessor to the unit! After bickering with management they finally gave in and sold me the parts (at full retail, I ran a shop for two way and about a decade before I came across this controller I had purchased one of their high end community repeaters at wholesale, seems they changed management and the new crew changed parts policy). Now the fun part, I was able to find one of the old AT tower computers with a locking door covering the disk drives. Striped it out and mounted a pair of the TK series radios at the top, below the repeater controller went in finished with the interconnect at the bottom. Now considering the old computer case was cavernous I mounted an old Motorola six can mobile duplexer as well as a a Duracom power supply in this tower cabinet. This repeater was mounted inconspicuously under a desk in a little used office at a customers site. Other than the owner and I knew this was a repeater. Later on for myself built a similar repeater with a pair of Icom mobiles with another Repeaterman and interconnect in a mid sized computer case. Compact and efficient reuse of old computer cabinets.

    I was in a GMRS club 10 or so years ago where we had a repeater up on a mountain (had my FCC license), and lots of us had radios in our cars just to talk to each other. Alot had the older UHF 100W Motorola ones. I still have quite a few MTS2000/HT1000 radios in a box and all the programming gear and DOS-based software. At one point I had a Pyramid portable repeater/extender that I talked to the repeater on VHF, which then connected to the UHF radio and rebroadcast. Was certainly fun time, but the novelty of it wore off.

    I bought all the radios from Bartlett TN. Fire, police, sanitation, all the radios😮. The ones that were well suited for ham use sold quickly, and the rest were parted out for the case and volume control, as those two parts sold quicker and for more money 💰 than a complete radio. Before the duplexer is where you would put your amp. The duplexer filters out everything but the receive and transmit frequencies. This will allow you to remote into the repeater over the internet and monitor the repeater and make changes. If you don't have a Motorola account, I would get one. Once you get it going, tell them what you want to excess on the account, like parts, programming software, etc. They are very helpful if you don't see what you want they will help you find it. Another very enjoyable video! Glad I found your channel and subscribed. While it’s not the topic of the video, it was cool to see the 6 meter duplexers behind you. I’d never really thought about how physically big those would have to be. It makes sense, but I’d never seen any in person. Looking forward to seeing you work on those.

    A few years ago, I owned a small radio station and we had some Radius radios tuned to our "RPU" frequencies (450 and 455mHz) for broadcast remote pickup. We had a base station at the radio station and mobiles in a few of the vehicles. They worked fantastic! The radio station was up on a hill and we had a nice shot in every direction. Not sure what output power they were set for but I know we could talk a good ways on them. I have two Motorola CDM-750's and an HT1000 set for MURS frequencies now. It's unbelievable what a couple of watts will get you on a well tuned antenna. Thanks for the video. Excellent!

      Thanks Jeff. You can do a lot with these radios for sure. That's interesting that the station was using them as a remote. I know of a number of ham repeaters that use them for linking. Thank you for the comment.

    Don’t know if you found the nuts but check with McMaster-Carr, they have a great selection of fasteners. For many years I have had to bring my gear up to transmitter rooms to service repeaters and controllers for analogue and LTR repeaters. It’s hard to change out modules in the field but saves me a second trip to reinstall the equipment.

    Motorola will sell you a copy of the programming software if you are a licensed ham and you need to program it for wide band coverage before the narrowband stuff came into law. You have to declare and prove you are a licensed ham by probably sending in a copy of your ham license. Yup it’s a good practice to clean up these units that have been in the dirt for a while. Hopefully each module is sealed against ingress of dust and dirt. This kinda reminds me of a modern day Desktrac repeater. Are these power supplies dual voltage for use in 220 volt countries?

      I haven’t had any luck finding any information about being able to buy the programming software from Motorola as a ham. Every Google search link I’ve come across seems to land me at a spot that wants me to have or create a business account with Motorola before I can go any further; and I don’t have a business license number, which (at least in the links/sites I’ve found) I don’t have. Subgunman, if you know where to find the correct Motorola site to sign up to buy the software as a ham/non-business customer, and can share that; I’d really appreciate it.

      You can setup an account with Motorola pretty easily. I have a business account and a personal account. Just give them a call and let them know you want to open up a customer account. On a couple of pages on the site, it directs Ham Radio operators to open a customer account. BTW. They no longer charge for CPS software.

      @@Darrell_CoquilletteOh. That’s good to know. Clearly I have not been finding the most current info in my Google searches. I’ll wait until after the new year; and try a few phone numbers. For some reason, I think nowadays nobody wants to talk on the phone and everyone wants stuff done online. Maybe old school phone calls are more productive! 👍

    Thanks for posting this content. My buddy and I run a mix of Motorola XTS, XTL and XPR radios. And while we really appreciate the Moto gear for it's quality, reliability and audio qualities, it is (as you know) a bugger to program and manage. This has lead us to use Anytone for our DMR activities. That said, I do have a desire to find a decent UHF XPR 8400 and stand it up for a local DMR repeater. Again, great content and keep it coming! I have a few of these. My grandad used to use lowband vhf for his logging company. His frequency was 48.660Mhz. He had 2 channels, one for his repeater, and one for Talkaround. His old tower is still there along with the old antenna. I flew my drone up and it was about 170 feet high. He said on a good day he could get into his repeater from over 100 miles away. I plan to get a new building at the tower and put some of my own repeaters on that tower and maybe see if we can find the old paperwork for his license and possibly renew it. I saved the duplexer as well, its an old sinclair model. It has some damage but i can fix it and retune it possibly to the ham band if im able to and use 2 of the old radius's to turn into a 6M repeater. Unfortunately its the 5 pin connector and not the 16 pin, but i can make it work.

    • @Darrell_Coquillette
      @Darrell_Coquillette 28 дней назад

      That sound great. 170' tower would be a great site for your repeaters. The 5 pin radios can still be used, but not has fast and easy as the 16 pin radios. I'm sure your Grandpa would be proud that his tower will be used by his grandson. Thanks for the comment and 73.

    Plenty of them get used for simplex repeaters with the addition of a talkback box.. A spaced repeater where one is receive and one is transmit spaced a mile apart and linked through the internet so you don't need a duplexer.. And of course they could be setup for use on two local repeaters which quite a number of people do who just use the club repeater.. The biggest problem I see is just like the idea of a "free" cat, they will cost someone to pay to have them programmed.. Around here that can be anywhere from $75 to $150 and this is why you see piles of them at local hamfest's that sellers can't give away.. It is just better to buy the used Kenwood, Icom or Yaesu mobile for $50..

    Nice find! I was a mobile FM radio technician and serviced mainly the Motorola Motran series VHF 100 Watt rigs and the GE Master Progess line operating in the VHF and UHF bands. We had three mountain top repeaters that gave us extended range from El Paso, TX to Blanding and Green River launch complexes. The Motorolas and GE's were solid state from the front end on the receivers to the audio output. Same for the exciters in the transmitters. Both brands had tube drivers and P.A.'s. I had many a chance to take copies of the maintenance manuals. Both brands had very detailed serviceman's manuals. I worked with two other mobile FM geniuses and together we installed, repaired and PM'd around 300 mobile units, around 10 base stations and 7 repeater sites. We lived out in the field with all our equipment; frequency monitors, signal generators, scopes, RF power meters, spare parts and tools. I did all this from 1972 to 1978 so, my info here might need some tweaking. I'm also a Technician grade Amateur Radio operator call KB5ZDW. 73's
