Underconsumption Core: The Trend to Normalize Normal Spending
Underconsumption is officially in on social media and I think it's because we're all exhausted. Exhausted by being told what to buy, think, look like, and even where to travel.
Uncerconsumption core is a new trend where people are celebrating normal lives and normal spending. How did we get here and will underconsumption core stay a main stream topic?

I don't understand why people need to name something that is normal, it's the world that's mad. We buy stuff we don't need, with money we don't have, to impress people we don't like. Why? Because the media and society tells us to... Time to wake up people..
I’m happy to see it trending and I hope people consider the impact that their purchases have on the world AND their wallet.
Gen Xer here. I have never had any social media other than Facebook. It was great at first, but then started to be a time suck that wasn't doing anything productive for me, so I got off of it. I (obviously) watch RUclips and have learned a lot from it. I do notice that it makes me want to spend more money than I probably would have otherwise.
Hi y’all I’m mexican and earn $ 1,500 USD a month. Nice video 😊
Book suggestion: The Overspent American by Juliet B. Schor from 1997. The author has also written a TON of books about consumerism over the years. Not much has changed to be honest.
Finally I understand why my spending is considered so different- so many people over consume! And normal concepts like wearing clothes until they break down, are not normal for many people. I seriously am disgusted by influencers doing “my husband selects my outfit” where they buy like 5 new dresses every week….
Everyone needs to see this, great video!
There is there is no ma'am. You said that so many times I was stunned lol " There are" many ads my dear..lawd ❤
Badly misinformed lady speaking about the economy Etc
One of the ads that fully made me mad recently was this add for a razor...for your face. I'm not talking about for a mustache or even it's main purpose being for trimming eyebrows, nope, just for regular PEACH FUZZ on your cheeks, chin, forehead??? I just found it baffling that it was such a big deal, one of the other main selling points being "my makeup feels like it adheres better on my skin" like okay??? Shaving makes the hair grow back thicker in most places, tf is this for?
I must be an alien on this planet: I have never been influenced by social media. Or maybe it's because I am an introvert who doesn't have the slightest patience for dumb, shallow people. To be honest, i never liked buying too much staff: when I was a child, i got already tired of being in a mall, my brain felt exhausted by too much visual cacophony. Great video, by the way. A big hug from Portugal.
i just think its funny they think minimalism is a new concept.
This is genuinely one of the best explanations on marketing I’ve ever seen. A lot of other videos focus too much on either the selling aspect or the manufacturing desire aspect, and miss the reality manipulation and normalization aspects altogether (sorry, too tired to remember proper jargon). You did really well touching on the FOMO. I’m shocked this doesn’t have more views.
Simplest solution that seems to elude you: Unplug as often as you can
My boyfriend (older & successful) taught me about underconsumption. It’s been a positive change for me. We get to travel every 3-4 months bc we aren’t wasting hundreds or thousands of dollars in shopping every month. We use what we have and we don’t follow fashion trends. Our rule is: Try to find it for free, if we can’t, we buy it used, if that’s not available… we think long and hard if we really need it 😂 and if so, then we fold and buy it. But usually we get away with not buying it for full price.
Really insightful video 🥳
Underconsumption is what the 80's was like. Then consumerism soared in the 90s. 2007 was the pinnacle of Idiocracy and then it crashed. What followed was a revolution and gradual increase back to overconsumption. Today, people already in debt tryin to live like Celebrities. The End...literally
I love this video! You are very well-spoken, and this video helps me feel hopeful for the future as we learn more about what is going on behind advertising and marketing :)
thank you so much! I'm glad it resonated with you
I’m glad this is becoming a trend because I don’t want my teen daughter falling into the overconsumption trap.
Just thinking the other day about how you very rarely used to redecorate in the past. You just had your decor and stuck with it for the most part, and totally redoing a whole place for a vibe is something that’s just so commonplace these days
I'm in my 60s, this mindset was once just being frugal. Then minimalism, then slow living, and now underconsumption core. No matter what you call it, I'm on board.
different names, same vibe 😎
I went to Five Below today; put a couple of things in my cart, put them back, left empty handed. I know it doesn’t seem like much but I’m recovering from a shopping addiction and I’m so proud of myself for that!
I went to target today. Only got replacement scissors, replacement nail clippers, and consumables. Nothing else. I’m so proud
I so relate to the girl at 17: 50. These days I want to go out and have fun, but every option I get involves some kind of consuming, movies, mall, restaurant, etc. is as if there isn't any option for people struggling financially like myself 😔
I’m 55 and I’m over consumerism. I’m decluttering and planning for retirement. ❤
better to be over consumerism than be over-consuming :)
Can you recommend some Under Consumption Core videos or platforms?
Sorry but crazy to talk about spending money and how exhausting it and and make a short pause for telling about your Patreon. I understand but still:)) crazy
Do you think creators don't have to pay bills and rent?
@@bravelygo do you think that influencers don't have to pay bills and rent?
@@MonaLisa625 No, but they're free to promote things and people are free to not buy. You are free to not become a patron, but it's crazy to come to someone's page and say "You should make things for me for free." Also, this video is about a culture of consumption that is not just about influencers; it's about cultural expectations, corporate culture, and capitalism as much as it is about influencer links.
@@bravelygo i know. I just find it crazy, that's all :) I'm not judging you
@@bravelygo I didn't say you should do free stuff for me. You are overreacting. I just found it crazy and hilarious. I understand that it's your job. But we can't hide that it's hilarious. We can't pretend just for you to not feel attacked
❤❤❤
I don't know about underconsumption core but I like to see people make something or actually do something that's not buying things. I tend to follow art and craft blogs or maybe some relatable travel or daily blogs of people doing stuff I am interested in such as organizing but without the damn container store.
I've had some of my youtubers basically turn into totally sponsored content and then it's like watching an ad for that company instead of the original content. I understand needing sponsors but it became disingenuous. :(
My stuff is currently causing me stress . I am packing and shipping my stuff and am wishing I didn’t have so much. Unfortunately I paid for it all and feel attached to everything. I have a hard time letting stuff go 😕
cute
The sheer number of ads on Pinterest has ruined it for me. It used to be one ad every 10 or so pins, now it's very close to 50% ads. It's just sad now and it's just garbage to scroll through 😔
Gone are the days where you could look up something online whether you're interested in purchasing it or just doing research on it and less than 5 minutes later you're constantly being bombarded with advertisements about it everywhere for the next 6 months until you get sick and tired of the ad and just block it overall and don't have the desire to purchase or research that topic anymore. Does this happen to anyone else too? Like we've used to have privacy with that and now it's become a breach of privacy and in turn I no longer desire to purchase online as much anymore. Like these days anytime I research something or am interested in purchasing something, I just expect to be bombarded by ads on that said thing and all it brings is dread. Ads are supposed to entice you to purchase what they're promoting and instead they have the opposite effect of repelling and resisting the urge to even want to look at that thing anymore.
I’m doing home renovations right now and I’m so sick and tired of spending money. Fortunately we’re almost done. Maybe 2 more weeks max. I can’t wait to just be done and stop spending
Restocking and collecting is hoarding and gives me anxiety.
I generally resent trends by I'm excited to participate in this one!
The pendulum of consumption predictably swings back and forth, generation after generation. It used to be, "unplug the christmas machine" (that's a real title, btw). Now it's, unplug from social media. An economy that relies on consumption is doomed by design. There are other concepts of how to build an economy. Let's require that, instead of pretending the one we have can be "fixed" --oh wait, it was at its inception.
Melbourne Australia sooooo expensive to live.
Preach. 🙌🏼
Absolutely 💯 % spot on and love this trend and I’m praying it completely stays and restores balance to our currently, out of balance culture of consumption
7:20 I've literally been telling people this for the longest in regard to overconsumption. The mere *suggestion* of doing stuff in less excess (drive less, eat out less, buy less, etc.) is enough to make any American - regardless of social class, race, sex, political leaning - to lose their mind.
The older I get, the more I appreciate the idea of living within your means. Underconsumption core sounds appealing. Much more peaceful than constantly searching for the next great thing to buy!
This is the best commentary video on this subject. @Dramakween completely missed the mark as usual
This is so refreshing. I also feel overwhelmed by social media in general, there is so much noise online! Underconsumption + digital minimalism is the way to go for me.
Isn't temu child labour and that's why it's cheap? That's what I have heard
Definitely into the underconsumption thing, but can I point out the irony of starting this video with an ad for your patreon? It's kind of undermining your entire point, or maybe underlining it.
do you think I pay my bills with good vibes? Is it ironic that creators also exist under capitalism?
lol yeah, these RUclipsrs talking about overconsumption and how people are buying things they don’t need yet partner up or do sponsorships with brands and ask us to buy some random service, subscription or product by using their code 💀 they only want overconsumption if it involves them getting paid
@@rachelesmith3342 "Overconsumption" doesn't mean "spending any money at all, ever." You're basically saying that this RUclipsr should be responsible for your budget and judgment when it comes to your disposable income. Are you an adult or a child? This is her job...
I totally agree with what you're saying about underconsumption content being a relief. The constant treadmill of buying more things thinking that each new product is going to make you the person you're supposed to be I exhausting. It's awful! But it can be hard to realize that while you're still on the treadmill. I've had to budget very tightly lately because I'm in my last year of law school, but, even though I look forward to a time when I won't be budgeting this tightly, not being able to buy a bunch of new stuff has given me space to consider whether I even like buying new stuff. I never even stopped to consider it before, but I've realized I actually hate the consumption treadmill, and it's such a relief to opt out. I've been reframing the way I view the things I own, not as part of my identity, but just as tools. Thanks for the video! It really made me think. I'm new to your channel so maybe you already have a video like this, but if not, I'd like to se a video going into more detail about how products have been conflate with identity and how that affects us.
Ugh, yes, you're saying everything I've been feeling and are putting it into words so perfectly.
The irony of having to see once again the adverticing of "shop like a billionaire" by temu before This video
As if billionaires shopped on Temu 😂 the irony of that slogan - and their playing it completely straight - is incredible.
My whole life has been underconsumption core 😅 hope it goes beyond a trend, the more the better
