    80% of the heat is gonna leave off of the face of the panel. Vacuum tubes are up to 95% efficient at extracting solar energy from the sun. You may need more volume in form of water or oil to store that heat but the trade in efficiency i believe is worth it.

  • @marekzaleski7407

    • @texasprepperprojects
      @texasprepperprojects 10 дней назад

      Its because I can't. What you need to do is get a Kila watt meter and plug it into your fridge and let it go for 24hours. Every system, every house is a little different. I know that my chest freezer in my garage needs 1kw for 24 hours because i tested it. So, this thing will run my chest freezer for 4 days. But if you have a newer model or a bigger one your number might be different. Watt hours is a great universal measurement but I can't and won't say 'this will last this long' because there are too many variables. Spend $30 on a watt meter and test some stuff!

    Nice introduction. I recommend looking at Anderson SB50 connectors (or the generic "50 amp connector" version) and use those. For example, with one on the battery and one on the charger you remove the error prone connect/disconnect process with a quick and simple plug/unplug. That tiny inverter could also connect the same way. (The Anderson connectors are rated well over 50amps continuous with 6ga cable and etc. so probably even a 1000w inverter could be a reasonable connection, or add an SB120 connector for higher current.)

      Did you watch the whole video? Bluetooth let's you watch the status of the battery in real time. How much current coming in or going out so you know the state of charge. A stand alone bluetooth battery monitor runs about $80, so you are getting that ability for less. However what you also have to think about is that if you have a stand alone shunt or battery meter, it's more wires and terminals you have to connect. So things get even more expensive and complicated. When you have that built into the battery, the build is simple. Check out my other builds to see where and how the shunt is wired

    Have you considered powering the sand battery with the trapped heat from a greenhouse?

  • @fgbhrl4907
    @fgbhrl4907 14 дней назад

    Water is much better than sand at storing energy. Water can store about 1 BTU / lb*degF vs sand at 0.2 BTU/lb*degF. What this means is, if you heat the sand from 75 - 600degF, and the water from 75 - 205degF, and you had 50lb of each, the sand battery would store 4180 BTU, and the water 7250 BTU. Sure, you can heat the sand higher, but at a certain point stuff gets dangerously hot, and you have to deal with more expensive materials to store it safely.

    • @texasprepperprojects
      @texasprepperprojects 14 дней назад

      But then everything has to be waterproof

    • @fgbhrl4907
      @fgbhrl4907 14 дней назад

      @@texasprepperprojects That's true. But they also make 200-2000W immersion heaters that are designed to be dunked into water for $20 on amazon. Yes, most are 120V, but you can put two in parallel. That in a 50 gallon drum will give you a lot of thermal storage, and it's easy to drain / use the water.

    • @texasprepperprojects
      @texasprepperprojects 12 дней назад

      but then you have to have an inverter. In this design, it's very simple. just dc to dc. You can't cheat heat

    • @fgbhrl4907
      @fgbhrl4907 11 дней назад

      @@texasprepperprojects I'm not suggesting doing MPPT -> 120V. Do a similar thing to what you're doing, just run more in parallel. There's a 120V/2000W immersion heater on amazon that includes a temperature probe(!) for $21. Two of those in parallel would get you 1000W at 60V. (If you wanted 2000W you'd need 4). I'm also seeing 48V immersion heaters. 50 gal (400 lb) 'free' water vs $5 * 50lb *8 = $40. A steel 50gal drum would probably work for either. The nice thing about water is you can pump it through radiators if you want to speed up the heat dissipation. Another pro or con is that it's more thermally conductive; that's a pro if you want to get the energy out quickly, a con if you want to store it for a long time. And again, if you have to move it, it's much easier to drain 50gal of water through a hose pipe than it is to move 400lb of sand. I think both have their uses, for sure. The nice thing about sand is sometimes high temperature might be useful -- if you want to run a peltier / stirling generator for example.

    • @texasprepperprojects

      In this case wattage is not relevant. That 435 watt panel is PROBABLY 37 Volts at 15 amps or so. I have 12 volt 200 watt panels and I have 37 volt 250 watt panels. If something happens and you no longer have to worry about needing a ham license you'd better worry about upholding all the ham rules 100x. Those hams that go hunting for rule breakers aren't going to have as much patience when you trample all over them and they have to track you down!

You mentioned that some prep'ers think they will use ham bands and never worry about a license because society will break down and there will be no one to care about their licensed use of the spectrum. I think that after society breaks down ham radio self-regulation could get more intense.

    Most 12v compressor refrigerators can be switched to run on 24v. For system design, I think 12v is fine as long as you are normally under 1500w or so, and don't need to surge over 2000w. Double those numbers for a 24v system (3000w/4000w). If more than that, go 48v. Maybe someday we'll start seeing higher voltage than 48v systems readily available for DIY.

      Agreed on the DC fridge. It's just nice to use smaller wire and get more power out of your solar mppt

    Thank you so much for the information, so even with the 48v Inverter I will have to make sure that the input voltage from the solar panels do not fry it.

  • @Cris01121
    @Cris01121 18 дней назад

    I agree. 48v systems require too much panel voltage for a small backup system. 12 or 24v systems have less arcing problems and safer to work with from my understanding. My fridge and furnace blower surge to at least 1500 watts. So largest inverter I need is 2,000 watts which is just fine for a 12v system in my research. I might go with a 24v system just for the fridge and furnace if my delta 2 ever poops out. I'm working on a 12v dolly system as well and will have lots of usb devices like aa battery chargers and such. I'm also going to use a relay with a piezo buzzer to go off when the load terminals on the scc shut off as a battery monitor.

      Always go with a low frequency inverter, not those cheap Chinese high frequency ones like he is showing you, the battery is fine altho there are cheaper ones just as good. So do you need 200amp bms on your battery? 1500w ÷ 24v = 62.5 amps so you only need 100 amp BMS on the battery. Let's say later you want to run a 3000w inverter, add another battery with a 100amp bms, now you have 2 x 100amp bms batteries, drawing 3000w ÷24 v = 125 amps, being pulled from 2 100amp bms s sharing the 125 amp load, basically 62.5 amps each, if wired correctly, not wired correctly 1 battery will pull more than the other

    The only issue with 48v is usually the initial upfront cost . Unless id you building 12v or 24v system comparable to 48v size wise . The 48v will be cheaper. The disadvantage of 48V u mentioned only applys if you using high PV mppts like 500V . I've seen people build 48V system with a victron 150V 35A controller with only 2 panels in series

      @texasprepperprojects check out Brad Cagle channel, he built a small 48V system using a victron 100/20 charge controller , victron 1200W inverter and a Litime 48V 60Ah battery charging with 4 100w solar panels in series . My point here is u can build a 48V system which doesn't require 100-120 minimum. Yes it works better with 100V and above but it's not a requirement unless if you using those high voltage all in one systems.
