Make Great Photos from ANYTHING William Eggleston
@developingtank Another fine video. I had no idea about Raghu Rai - and how stunning his photos are! These disaster photos are heart-breaking - specially the one with the buried kid.. I know you probably keep an idea log of sorts, but I gotta come and make a recommendation, just in case you're not into it or planning yet: you should look into and make a video about Olga Karlovac. If you're not aware of her work, let me tell you: you're in for something quite stunning...
Thanks for watching and the recommendation. The name strikes a chord, but I’m not immediately aware of her work. I’ll look it up!
@@developingtank I mean she is quite contemporary in comparison with the photographers you mostly cover/covered, but her background is interesting, and the fact she makes quite stunning pictures with a Ricoh GR - and has been recognized and published her work, is quite something these days. With that said: keep developing!
Awesome! Thank you for your work, i'm discovering so many new photographers with you. Please keep going!
You’re welcome. I’m happy to hear that and I hope I can keep bringing your attention to other photographers you haven’t seen yet.
Such a powerful video-thank you for making this! I’m excited for my deep-dive into postwar Japanese photographers now.
Thank you, I’ve covered a bunch at this point, so I hope you’ll watch those videos as well.
Thank you for picking up Raghu Rai
Thanks for your support 🫡
Apologies if this comment appears twice .. This was a lot more than the content of the video. I had a good think about my own photography after watching. I left it 24 hours and then wrote down the purpose and direction. It’s a personal exercise so it’s not for sharing, I was brutally honest with myself and didn’t use the BS we (I) put in our social media. Words like validation and enjoyment show the negative and positive of the process. If nothing more comes of the exercise then it’s still worth while. Introspection can be hugely important in our own growth. Great video, it’s not often any on RUclips prompts me to follow up a question posed from me watching it. Bravo.
Thank you! I agree with a lot of what you’re saying it. I’m glad this video could prompt this kind of interaction. I appreciate this comment very much.
I just came back from a trip to Tokyo. I saw a copy of issue 6 in Tsutuya in Ginza the day before we flew back, continued browsing thinking I'd pick it up on my way out, then when I returned to the photo book section it was gone. Lesson learned.
Oh yeah, they go quick. I think you can still order that one online tbh
Am glad you covering photographers from other parts of the world and not just US and Europe? Pls continue and also look into African togs. Cheers.
Thank you. I will.
Thanks for your work. You’re one of the few people who actually gets this medium.
I really appreciate that 🫡
Man, thank a lot for what you are doing here! It is a treasure channel to explore
I appreciate you 🫡
Really enjoyed this one. Such amazing colour work for someone who went there because magazines started requesting it. Truly inspirational.
Thank you. Yes, his work is fantastic
Thank you for giving some attention to Rai. Even though he is a Magnum member and has been published in the a lot of Western publications in the past, I think his work is not so accessible in the West. For example, fellow Magnum member Harry Gruyaert’s photobook on India is easily obtainable but it’s harder to find Rai’s work on his country in the US right now.
Thanks for watching and I completely agree. It’s odd to me how hard it is to come across some of these Magnum photographers’ work. You would think all of them would be incredibly well known, but so many go under the radar.
I gotta agree, I am rather new to photography, but even as an Indian living in US I only recently learnt of Raghu Rai and then went into a mini rabbit hole about him. Interestingly, I learn that Cartier-Bresson himself encouraged Raghu Rai to join Magnum!
Tbh I didn’t know about him until a few of my Indian subscribers that I’ve DMed with mentioned him and suggested that I cover his work. I’m very glad that I did.
I'm going to keep repeating how amazing your work is for this genre and community. Thanks you, especially for exploring photographers beyond just America and Europe.
Thank you for your support here and on Instagram. I think these non-American, European, or Japanese videos will not do as well. However, I am dedicated to putting out bios of less "hype" legends of photography and will continue to explore those from other regions of the world. Raghu for example should have much more hype.
Wonderful infos
Thank you!

Thank you. Please, share to help change that 🫡
Amazing, thank you!
Thank you 🙏
That first minute share, felt like it was me talking..as I deeply resonate with what he shared. The viewfinder did something to my soul, and surely where I come from lives through my photos made. Thanks again for posting this sort of content. You are appreciated !
Thank you for your support
One of your best episodes. Thank you.
I appreciate it. Thank you 🙏
Great documentary!
Thank you 🙏
Wonderful video. Will you be doing some more on W. Eugene Smith, mainly his Jazz Era.
Yes, there will be a part 2. I just didn’t want to make a 30 minute video.
great video! just wondering, does anyone know what filmstock smith used? it would be interesting to know how he managed his exposures as most of his images are such high contrast
Thank you. Most photographers I’ve studied at this point achieve that more through pushing their film than using a specific stock, but I’m not an expert on that.
@@developingtank thanks for replying! I think Smith must have pushed his film... I just can't work out how there's such little grain in them!
Hello! I searched for ’Seoul Street Photo‘ and saw your video! The quality and feel of the picture are so good! 4:44 DDP was actually Dong-dae-moon stadium for soccer and baseball etc. After Jam-sil stadium was built, this place was changed to Historical and cultural park. It has become a popular spot for various fashion events by sticking to the stadium site :) Thank you for taking a good look at DDP with such a history!
Glad to see you enjoyed. I hope I can come back to Seoul sometime soon.
Glossy journalism.
😯
Well done!
Thank you 🙏
Thanks for this really outstanding and deep episode in photography. I admire that hard work you put into these. 👍
Thanks for the support. Comments like this help the videos get more views, but also help me to understand if I’m putting out what people really want. I had no idea how this one would do.
@developingtank I definitely enjoyed it a lot and it made me think about my photography in complete new ways. Quite inspiring 👍
Mr Koudelka makes me feel proud to be Czech:)

Thank you for another informative, educational and inspiring video.

Nice to hear a high level of engagement about art. A reminder that the thinking behind an art work is as crucial as the finished product.
Thank you for this comment. I appreciate you 🫡
@ No thank you is needed, keep up the good work.
I'm a museum framer, I'm so fortunate to frame all his original works as my daily job. ❤ He also my inspiration on color photography as well. 😊
Sounds like an incredible job 😯
Love your vision, I'll be here to witness it and participate. I agree and have experienced myself that idea of photographs having to "look good" to be good instead of having deeper meaning. My aim is to follow your journey as well as my own in finding deeper meaning in my works.
Thanks for the support. I hope I can find my own deeper meaning as well through this process.
I greatly appreciate what you are doing with your channel to help motivate deeper reflection on images, image making, and so on. This will definitely lead to more conversations on the subject. Keep it up! Were any of these essays you referred to available online, or were they pulled from the books in your collection?
Thank you. Some were in books I own and online I was only really able to find summaries of larger essays.
In london we had various large exhibitions on Japanese photographers and movements. At the Photographers Gallery. Have you been? Its am essential spot for any image maker / academic/ On our MA course we read, leave leave realism to the camera and the rest, to painting. Its been an on going conversation in academia. On a slight tangent. Brian Duffy also burned all his negatives. One of the most famous photographers in the 60s onwards. He stopped taking photos after this event.
I have not been, but that sounds awesome. It’s been years since I’ve been to London. The rejection of art is an interesting subject I might need to dive deeper into.
homie please keep making these videos i very much appreciate them and learn a lot every time
Keep coming through with the support and I’ll keep posting the vids. I appreciate you 🫡
I had never heard of Nakahira's “Circulation” installation. It is truly brilliant and thouroughly modern - essentially a live Instagram page in 1971! Fascinating. A truly important artist
Dude was waaaaay ahead of his time with that one. I don’t know how he had the energy to pull it off.
Love this one. I am dealing with these thoughts myself right now, what is the point of a photo, a snapshot vs a considered piece, a phone shot vs large format analogue. My gut says all are valid, even though aesthetically I might not appreciate one over another. Aesthetics vs subtext or meaning vs no meaning at all other than representation. There is something in photography that has me hooked right now, maybe because I still haven't discovered how to engage with it other than at it's surface level but knowing there is way more if I can just find the way of expressing it in an emotional vs representational way. Limiting palette in the creation of the photo but then the myriad of ways it can go from there in presentation, being sublimated into other things and growing as a piece other than just the photo. And ,can that live happily beside a simple photo that is just a representation or a freezing of a moment for posterity.? It's exciting to thing about and I'm excited to experiment and fuck up and find things in the failures. These vids are hitting the spot. Thanks a million.
Hell yeah! I am in a very similar place right now with my own work. I see so much meaningless work (or work that seems meaningless to me, including my own), that I’m having a hard time shooting just for the sake of it when it doesn’t have any defined purpose. The more I research photographers who have created great long term projects/the more I want to find one to chase after myself. Thanks for this comment. This is the kind of dialogue I want to experience more here.
@@developingtank Yes, I am in exactly the same spot. My only answer at the moment is just to push through and keep the camera at hand, because i'm learning what i want (or being honest, getting a vague as fuck glimpse of it in me gut) through what I find disappointing or pointless. I think right now i need to turn my brain off and let my gut take over when shooting , and also countering that by analyzing and thinking when I am outside of the act of taking a photo and away from a camera. Both paths will hopefully meet in the middle.
“What size do you print to?” My most common question I ask a photographer upon meeting them as to me, the enduring image speaks whereas the temporary image is mere transient commentary into a great and rushing wind.
All we are is dust in the wind 🎶
I have been working on straight documentary of untracked Northland NZ bush. One comment early in your narrative caught my attention, the fact that memory of experience is very vague and based on the emotions of the experience that, where the detail is so chaotic, only an image can restore the reality, and therefore becomes worth taking time to study. (Confirmation of the direction I have been heading in - the final work will be printed to be held in the hand.)
Love to hear it 🫡
thanks for bringing japanese photography (both by women & men) to the western public!
Of course, I love it 🫡
Love this one. Thank you for pushing the discussion in an artistic and cerebral way rather than technical. Keep going!
Thank you, I hope I can spark that discussion for some
Great work your doing!
Thank you 🙏
Isn't it interesting that Nakahira seemed to work even better once he declared an "enemy?"
That’s true
OH MY GOSH! The daily thing. Oh wow. Printing like that. That's just astounding. I'm looking over at my Canon Selphy CP1500. I can't even imagine it from the old days doing the chemical process. 2000000000000? 200? WTF? That's insane. I love to death how he arranged his photos. I can't tell if it's my artistic sense or just that I'm kind of lazy and I don't want them to narrate that way. I like the concept more of the live draft. (Damn, "live draft" is a really cool concept.) You make my brain think so much. We're in it. It's 2025 already. What the hell. It'll be 2030 next week.
Looking over Nakahira’s work really got my wheels turning too. It’s a good way to start off the year looking over some work from someone who really thought outside the box.
Good luck with you efforts and the channel! But don't burn yourself out.
Thanks 🙏
❤ Thank you for yet another great video! Happy New Year 2025!
Thanks for your support as always! Hopefully, I’ll share some photographers that are new to you in 2025!
Where do you stand on Nakahira’s photography? Has your photography changed dramatically over time or evolved within the same style?
i have no style
How I’m feeling every time I go out and shoot lately. @chriscard6544
My style, if that isn't too strong a term, has changed as my mental health has worsened and my faith in humanity has plummeted over the last couple of years. I started out aspiring to street photography but I now have barely any interest in photographing people. I tend to shoot the built environment more these days, and even that I often do in a spirit of despair at how ugly and joyless so much of it is where I live.
@iamandrewpatterson if it’s that bleak it might make for some good art
@@iamandrewpatterson Try to get out into the countryside more Andrew, not necessarily to photography but to get back to nature, it will help. Also I find changing the medium like moving to film from digital or vice versa helps to instil some change and variety in your photography. Hope this helps.
Another great Developing video. Thanks!
Thank you!
Photography is the artful convergence of technical precision and creative vision, enabling one to distill the essence of a moment, subject, or emotion into a timeless visual narrative that transcends language and culture.
Do you believe this is true 100% of the time or is there any case where it isn’t?
@@developingtank While the statement holds true for photography as an art form, there are instances where photography serves functions beyond artistic intent-such as surveillance, documentation for purely factual purposes, or utilitarian imagery-where the focus may be less about creative vision or emotional resonance and more about accuracy, utility, or evidence. In these cases, the artistry may be secondary or even absent altogether, depending on the intent behind the photograph. Everything hinges on the moment.
