58 - HOW DOES TRAUMA AFFECT CHILDREN - IT MIGHT BE MORE THAN YOU THINK - HOW TO SEE SIGNS
People are mostly occupied with their own traumas and cant see how this affect their children.
Children learn with imitation. Especially in their early development they take their parents and the adults around them as role models. This is a good thing if the child is in a healthy environment. But some children are not that fortunate.
The parents might be abusive, they might not be tending the basic need of the child. Or they might be addicts. The children in the house will directly get affected from this environment. Even if they don't show signs immediately it will come up in their adulthood.
The other aspect of the trauma issue is when the child is traumatized. When a young child is a vic...

I was ALWAYS comforting my mum. Even at 10, she would vent to me about everything and all her trauma and cry to me and I would hug her. She placed so much emotional responsibility on me and threw her emotions at me and expected me to do something about it. I felt so unsafe as a child and so empty and had no idea why. That was why. I didn’t have a mum, I had a child.

Thank you for your videos. They all address the aftermath. But in my case it’s been a long time - over 20 years since the disclosure. At the time I was a mess but sadly i did not seek therapy and there was no you tube . I stuffed down my feelings as I had 2 small children and had left my career to care for them and we were living in a new city. I felt powerless. And then I got pregnant less than 2 years after the disclosure when I was still a mess. for the next 20 years I immersed myself in raising my children. Now as an empty nester I feel worse than ever. My husband keeps reminding me I should be over it etc etc and my inability to be over it will be the cause of our demise. I am 62. Not many people know what happened. I did tell his sister at the time as were friends. Well now i cant stand to be in the same room as her as it is so triggering. She told her other friends about it and I felt betrayed again. I feel shame I stayed. Weak and powerless. I dont want to lose all i have sacrificed for yet I feel so disrespected. I wish there was a video that I could share with my husband explaining the long term consequences of unhealed emotional wounds and ptsd from betrayal. He blames me for not getting past it. I am stuck with the shame and pain. Searching for help. Thank you

My mom who is an only child got into a toxic relationship then marriage since she was *15*. She wanted a daughter (me) to be her companion, since she doesn't have sisters. Since I was a child, i was getting emotional baggage from her for example complaints on how she is alone and has no sisters to talk with etc. (Even though she aborted my own sister later. There was no issues with health or anything.) And how her relationship with my dad was toxic which is true. So I always felt like it's on me to take care of her emotionally and protect her. Now I'm almost 30. I'm tired of it. I'm so used to it that if a day passes without talking to her, I feel guilt.

Before my father died of cancer he left me a note to say 'you will be the man of the house' and I felt the weight of that the minute he passed. I was left only with my mother and sister at the age of 12 and expected to counsel my mother for her own child abuse from her mother and to look out for my sister who indulged in risky behaviours to get the attention of my mother which failed. Although I wasn't cooking food everyday, I did have to do all the gardening, mowing the lawn, counselling my mother and mediate the daily arguments between my mother and sister. I still got to play video games and go out with friends so it wasn't a prison sentence. But I live with an ongoing lifelong sense of responsibility for my mother and sister to some degree who eventually went into rehabilitation and AA recovery. My academic studies really took a hit too and I did not perform well at school with all the distractions and worries. I lived by people pleasing and substance taking for many years until I hit 40 and my health declined severely. I've spent 5 years recovering and an still improving each day.

A trust or boundaries respect was never established I hopped from home to home as a teenager adopting co decency issues do to the intense need of approval n acceptance long quest of need a clean slate to prove my worthiness and acceptance new family or environment. By doing all things I failed attempts to prove to my family as an adult no way I can change that I am still living by the affects of child hood trauma with my daughter has been the primary focus on what not to do . I have been searching videos because I suffer from childhood trauma I was the first child of a 17 year mother that wanted nothing more than to be a mother to me to leave home and be for filled by her mother and daughter trauma yet I was not she expected my father and his family suffered alcoholism n mental illness my father was diagnosed late in our adolescence adhd n odd along with alcoholism we were diagnosed as child n myself being a female in the late 80s incorrectly my symptoms were overlooked due to lack of information during that era of adhd so I was misdiagnosed with depression or bipolar disorder. That being said lack of resources impacted on my mother knowing something different about our behaviors especially mine and made unintended serious trauma resulting mistakes. That lead to a world of more trauma in my life luckily I have never directed blame I left home early and make sure I made her know that where decisions on me afterwards was truly my choice so she could not experience self blame being that I also took that weight of blame shame with resulting in the worst of choices n consequences of my adult life I’m 42 I had my first child 1/20/2023 which created a bridge and reconnection with my family I was casted out of my family due to childhood trauma n parenting trauma it led to me running away at 15 and being the troubled relative that we need to learn from my choices as an example of what not to do when you do not honor your parents guidance . Yet till this very day invalidated of the truth of my behavior rooted from parent not having the knowledge of trauma being created in ur child that is already from the start experiencing the family genetic disorder of adhd unexplained in the 80s and 90s . My mother also an amazing mom

I am so very sorry that your wife turned her back on you when you needed her the most. Marriage is intended to last a lifetime. She most definitely did not what she vowed to do when y’all got married. “In sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, in good and in bad, til death do you part”. She failed you on just about every vow she made. Not sure if you are a man of faith or not, but you need to lean on God now. It’s your only hope. I see you posted this 7 months ago so your heart is still so very raw. God loves you and he sees all. He knows every intention in everyone’s heart. It will take a lot of time to heal your heart and it does not help things with your best friend turning his back on you either. I too was cheated on. I found out my husband was in a 2 1/2 yr affair with a girl the same age as our youngest daughter. We had been married for 38 years at the time. In a few weeks after I found out that he had 2 additional lengthy affairs all in the span of 13 years. So I was dealing with not only 1 affair, but 3 affairs at the same time. Betrayal trauma is very real. It does something physical to our brains. Once a person reaches a certain number of traumas, our brains “break”. It depletes our immune system and results in autoimmune diseases. I’ve had Bell’s Palsy twice and it is not fun. It looks similar to a what a stroke does to a person’s face. I ended up with a droopy eye and a half smile. Some people recover completely but in some cases it doesn’t. My husband’s secret sin life was revealed over 8 years ago and I still struggle very much. My psychiatrist diagnosed me with PTSD, depression, anxiety and eventually had panic attacks and can’t leave my home. I stayed in the marriage but I never could overcome the betrayals. Everyone deals with things differently and every person has their own unique situation. We have been married for 46 yrs now. We have a beautiful family with 3 children and 4 precious grandchildren. I am a woman of strong faith and I chose to keep my family together. I am still angry. To everyone outside of my home thinks I am the one with the problem and my husband is enjoying his life. Church was a huge part of our lives. I have not been to church in years but my husband goes to church faithfully. I refuse to go to church as a couple because that would make me a hypocrite because we are no longer “one”. It’s a very long story but gradually over the past 3 years, my husband is rejecting me sexually. He has had problems with erectile dysfunction for years. He blames me for his condition so he is no longer sexually attracted to me and has said he does not want to have a sexual relationship with me. I was rejected by him for almost 20 years. He was unfaithful for at least 13 years and is now still rejecting me. It angers me because he blames me for the things he has done. It’s really messed up bad!! I want to scream it at the top of my lungs. No one understands how I feel. Until a person has been through a betrayal, there is no way for them to truly empathize and really “get it”. You are not alone. It’s so hard to forgive and move on. You actually had no choice because your wife made the decision for you. She left and divorced you at the worst time of your life. I will pray for you. My heart broke into a million pieces when I read your comment. I pray that God gives you the strength and courage to go on with your life. I’m so very sorry and you most definitely have been damaged both physically and emotionally. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

And I was just like shocked that they could remember that and than they started naming names of students and memories and I was honestly shocked I started trying to think of memories and things of that nature especially with school and honestly I just blanked it was crazy the stress I relate a childhood too. All of this resonates is kind of insane but I mean to an extent I always knew this my mom always says I’m more of a adult than my father so you know.

Struggling with this right now. I’m an SA and DV survivor. I also had a negligent and narcissistic father. Im a daughter of an immigrant father from Haiti from the most dangerous part and first generation Guyanese and Vincentian American mom and we have a lot of trauma because of the slave trade and systemic oppression. I wasn’t allowed to cry or feel my feelings, my dad stopped bonding with me around 11 to 13 year old. I even seen my dad put hands on my mom and serial cheat on her. And his side chicks would fight her and he won’t help my mom and protect her. I was left alone in the house as young as 5 years old and was raped under my dads roof. At 26 I told my dad about what happened to me he was on his phone playing solitaire and walked out on me. He never took accountability for having strangers pick me up from school and dropping food off to me as a little kid… all alone in the house. I begged him for a relationship and told him I needed him and he just walked away and said nothing as I cried in front of both of my parents and confessed my long held secret of my trauma… When I turned 20 I was in an abusive relationship and DV and SA happened for about 5 years to the point I finally got a protection order and got free. But I keep making reports to the police and they do another to the violations… I been so traumatized and I was a psychology major and wanted to be a therapist since I was in high school. I’m 27 now and want to make sure my kids and especially my daughters never go thru what I went thru… I have playlist of examples of toxic behaviors and 🚩 to look for and stories to share with them so they are prepared… I watch so many parenting videos and lives to learn of what not to do because I don’t wanna traumatized my kids… that’s my biggest fear… I still have nightmares and fever dreams about what happened to me… shaking and sweating and even crying… trauma doesn’t go away with time… you live with that FOREVER!!! Trauma is carried through the 🧬 and it affects generations, especially if that trauma hasn’t been healed.

Thank you, it's hard to tell if it's the case being it's your parent, but emotional parentification is real. As an only child it was hard, I went to stare custody more than once. I've always been serious and struggled to play with my own kids because I barely knew what it was. In my 40s, I'm now going to seek some serious therapy.
