Soul Survivor & its influence on today's Church. The homosexuality lie and safeguarding. A cult? Pt2
Soul Survivor: A Difficult Conversation About Abuse, Power, and the Future
This is part 2 in Rev Robert Thompson and my conversation that took place on 10th January.
In this in-depth conversation, I sit down with Robert to discuss the complex history of Soul Survivor, its profound impact on churches like HTB and the broader Church of England, and the serious allegations that have recently emerged.
We delve into the disturbing accounts of Mike Pilavachi's abuse of power and the culture of silence that allowed it to continue for so long. We critically examine the shortcomings of the safeguarding processes within Soul Survivor and the wider church.
Furthermore, we engage in a frank and honest d...

_Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived_ ... It strikes me the modern C of E no longer believes this. It is deceived and thinks that there are no consequences for unrighteous behaviour, including the failure to live out Christian sex ethics, amongst those who profess to believe. Supposed charismatic evangelicals, who of all people ought to reflect the NT faith, but who don't live it out will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Our children went to SS and they saw it was all total con. They know the music just manipulated people to an emotional state and they saw through the so called "prophetic" words. When 10,000 young people are gathered and someone 'prophesies' that there is someone her with emotional problems they are basically calling out every other one there😂 Nothing prophetic at all. Our children enjoyed it for the music and companionship but spiritually it was empty.

From a Biblical perspective, Soul Survivor was a success because many people became Christians and saw God at work through the organisation - despite it's flaws. And that is the gospel, that Christ builds his kingdom despite our flaws and brokenness. That's what Mike preached. Safeguarding, money and leadership, important as they are, are not ways to measure the kingdom.

Mike preached humility on stage, but in his inner circle he would use emotional manipulation to make sure that people did as he wanted. If you watch the documentary by Matt and Beth Redman, they talk about the ways Mike controlled those around him.

I attended a church over 20 years ago where they did ministry time at the end of every service and it soon became obvious that there was a cohort of people who went up for ministry time every single week. Clearly the ministry wasn't working for them if they were coming back week-in and week out. The danger is that the evangelical church presents ministry time as a quick, almost magical fix to people's problems, without the need for a disciplined, consistent Christian life.

Writing as an older Christian (72) I still wonder why no petition was raised requiring the resignation of Welby, after he ordered the locking of the Parish Churches of England, during covid: something not even contemplated during the 1980s (The Decade of AIDS)? This is a man - plainly lacking in belief - who had the temerity to inmagine himself "called" to occupy the Chair of Augustine. Single-handedly (in a manner remeniscent of Johnson and the Conservative Party; and using the same 'weapon') the Globalist-Communist 'insert', Welby, has managed to take down the Church of England. Not the hierarchy of "career-clergy" of course (they will go on promoting, and paying, themselves, abusing the language of "calling", until the cows come home!), but the Christians who turn up on Sundays, and maintain the churches, who simply want to worship, and remember that Last Supper. You mention that bishops today fail to take responsibility: but bishops ought not to be politicians. Failure to "take responsibility" is the marque of the current Globalist-Communist politician. If you are seeing this in the C of E, what does that tell you about my parallel between Welby and Johnson? Did I mention that both went to Eton? So things are as they should be......Establishment-wise.

Now you have no spiritual leader with the resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury. What’s worse, is that you deny the essential humanity of gay people. Good riddance to bad rubbish I say.

Yes. God speaks in so many different ways inside and outside of church. Why the need to give God a 15 minute slot in a service? Just so limiting and uncreative. I questioned a leader who said before he preached, ' isn't it great when the Holy Spirit draws close?' Anyone in that room who experienced nothing would feel alienated and the leader had elevated his godliness in one sentence.Just thoughtless and unhelpful. Thank God we are not created to be clones of each other.

One of the biggest problems with manipulative, dark triad types, is that they are either attracted to toxic cultures, or they change the culture gradually to suit themselves and become untouchable. I’ve heard of great groups or churches getting one toxic person and it all goes down the gurgler. Sometimes the first sign is that they begin pushing your boundaries to see how malleable people are and how much they can get people to compromise on their values. The weak people will accommodate the toxicity, and the people with strong principles will start leaving (either quietly jumping ship, or finding themselves the target of conflict and hate campaigns).

Pray for God's discernment, that's how you spot them. Google uncanny valley as a start, what's the film "Get Out" that parodies HTB, all those plastic smiling faces. There's a good start for you. More importantly, as God for Guidance and wisdom to navigate this weird world of the Coalescence of Psychopathy. God will never steer you wrong. I have warned you about this subject since you started re-uploading again. Look at all your old comments and see the ones I made. This is just the reality of life at large. Forgo getting involved with the church. Christ's body on earth (the church) is broken, it clearly states this in Scripture. You can reconcile yourself with the church through that. Paul wrote about being aware of "those without conscience" and Jesus wrote about "Wolves in sheep's clothing". I his is hevel, nothing new under the sun. From the clerics to the laity, all their church dealings are, are a veneer to make them more acceptable in society, they are not with God and God it not with them (he may love them, but vengeance is God's alone). Anyway, church hurt is a real thing, those who perpetrate it are more numerous than those who are truly for God. They all do weird shit behind closed doors. You're an innocent lamb, you meet people and assume that they hold the same level of decency you do, they don't! Everything's a learning curve. What you're doing now with this video series is conducive to God and his people. Take astounding pride in that. You are shining light into the shadows and that's more than admirable.

Hey Sam, glad you are making the space to have some of these conversations. Something you said resonated with me about churches generally not fostering agency but unhealthy dependence. I was listening to a worship song the other day that had the line “I’m not enough / unless You come” and it struck me that this isn’t very biblical but could be effective in making vulnerable people dependent on a weekly hit of worship experience at a church. Not trying to be overly skeptical, but it did get me thinking about what effect some of these songs might have on people.

From a biblical point of view, I think God is far more concerned about the holiness and servanthood of his worship leaders than the style. This doesn’t really get a mention here but I find it to be the most important thing. Churches whether they are appointing a celebrity worship leader or a brilliant musician or just whoever is available seem rarely to look for a character of personal holiness and devotion to God. Were they to do that then many of the problems that dr Mark Porter discusses would not be a thing. In the 1980s for example when David Watson had bought a profound renewal to his congregation in Saint Michael Le Belfrey, were you to go to a service you found an incredible breadth of culture and worship music. It was the natural outworking of the care that was forged in the struggle for holiness and discipleship that was a hallmark of that movement in that time. One can see this at work today in rare churches that share this common denominator: the seeking of holiness. Which leads to care across the congregation above the ego of the leader. I think it is significant that where churches have profoundly sought God in humility, with even a modicum of skill there can be a wonderful variety in the expression of worship. I do not believe this is achieved by the democratisation of anything. I can’t see a biblical call for that. The principal call is for humility and God-fearing in all leaders. The church definitely comes unstuck when the celebrity becomes a thing that is a higher priority than that of personal holiness, but it is a grave mistake to discount celebrity Worship Leaders because they have every opportunity to walk well with God too, and there’s nothing wrong with achieving on a scale. Although such achievements come with a health warning that it becomes harder to walk well with God in those circumstances. I have spent my life discipling and encouraging brilliant musicians to get close to God and offer themselves in humility for his service. Their own journey as musicians is all about what they do with the applause that their gift generates and not about suppressing their gift. We should not be quick to accuse people who are super talented of being wrong footed. Otherwise, we’d have to censure Eric Liddell when he said “God made me fast and when I run, I feel his pleasure”. After his Olympic triumph, he went on to live his life as a missionary in China, demonstrating his humility which I believe was there at the start. There’s nothing wrong with seeking excellence. We simply need incredibly holy leaders of integrity whose character and lifestyle will open them to care for the peoplein their midst. This should definitely lead to a broad culture which would find freedom in both our emotions and our minds to encounter God in many ways. Beware that 19th century heresy that Jesus never wept : that we are saved through our minds and that our emotions are fallen and must be subjugated. We are entirely fallen and can be redeemed on every level including emotionally. There is a move currently to denounce emotional worship music: a move which which at worst could belong to this heresy. Still the most famous verse in the Bible is “God so loved the world… “. Inherant in that “love“ is both emotional and intellectual depth. Let’s not throw the baby out with a bath water. We can have it all because God made it that way. I would imagine one could actually trace this sort of behaviour all the way back to the early days of the church. Even if you look at something like the sacrament of holy orders in the early Catholic church, you find the hierarchy of "priesthood" bestowed only on men who were considered "anointed" by God to carry on the apostolic tradition. Looking back it's quite obvious now that this attracted a lot of individuals with abnormal psychological issues. The grandiosity of some of the church leaders in our history has been absolutely ridiculous. It always amazes me that some of the greatest wisdom also came from the most humble of early church leadership (Thomas Aquinas, Augustine, et al). Most were cloistered monks or simple priests, but the ones who thirsted for power became Bishops, Cardinals, and Popes. The entire system of holy orders became very Machiavellian. I think the only way to avoid these sorts of things happening in the modern church is to do away with hierarchal orders and leadership positions completely and make every member of the church community an equal. We should only be following one man after all - Christ. I don't need someone to tell me how to do that, I can just read about it, and imitate it in my own life, to the best of my ability.

A question I have is, how many bishops does the C of E actually require? It seems bonkers there are 100s in Britain - are the increasing appointments for the individual or for the people?

First of all, I need to know where I can get a pair of those slippers for my husband, because he would love them. Secondly, great discussion on the dark triad personality type in Christian contexts. These types alienate people from God through their subtle (or often not subtle) evil behaviour. If I hadn’t had such a radical encounter with God myself I would have doubted the truth of Christianity from how I’ve seen people behave in church, especially since I’ve met kinder and more honest witches than some of the professing Christians. Sometimes I have more hope for the people of the world than I do for the people in narcissistic churches.

Thank you for the compliment on my slippers... I think they were from M&S. Yep - I'm releasing the follow up video this evening about how to spot the less obvious nasty characters.

Love the idea of a conference on service, where people are given loo brushes. My only experience of a certain London church with many lawyers in the congregation taught me a lot. My husband worked for a Christian publisher, and for some reason, some of the wives were roped in to serve coffee to a group from the church. First, a woman told us in no uncertain terms not to go near her cello, because it was worth thousands of pounds. We had no intention of going near the cello, but it made us feel like naughty children. Thereafter we became invisible to the entire group. We were of no importance, because we were only serving the coffee. I made up my mind from then on to notice people who serve, and to acknowledge them. Of course I don't always succeed, but that is my aim, so thank you, lady with the cello.

From my own experience.. Yeah, those people think they are just better Christians and better people than someone who attends a "normal" church now and then. The character of a person doesn't matter, their actions don't matter. If they don't praise the God the same way then they are sinners, no matter what. The arrogance you can find underneath that facade of a pious, humble Christian is mind boggling. Often times it is the most desperate people who find a community in that sort of environment because you are accepted IF you just talk and behave like others in that cult-like group. Pay the cult/group 10% of your earnings because the bible says so and your place in heaven is certain. It's also those kind of people who are easy to lead and manipulate so those places are also great safe havens for psychopaths. My guess is that most often than not the leaders of those cult-like groups are psychopaths. They have their "own" flock of people to guide, control and be admired by. Also the preaching that happens there is usually underlined with how sinful all people are, how dangerous the outside world is, and how only the preacher has the answers because he "speaks in God's voice". People who happen to have to grow up with parents like that maybe never be stable member of society. The gas lighting and God given certainty about their own actions creates an environment where there is no room for a child to be themselves. It takes decades to get better and healthier after you finally understand the amount of shit you have been put through. You might never get to feel like a happy and joyful person if you are not ready leave those people behind - specially if they are your own parents. Im on my late 30s and finally have had some glimpses what it feels like to be relaxed and hopeful and trustful that life isn't that bad and there isn't anything deeply wrong with me. I have no idea what kind of damage have been done to my mental development and whole nervous system if compared to a family setting where the parents were actually supportive rather than suppressive. That book has some good teachings in it but it has A LOT of things to use to mentally control other people. The healthy spiritual care in western world has been so minimal for so many centuries that sometimes I think we are doing so many things so wrong just because these groups and institutionalized spiritual control. It is a so good thing that change is constant and inevitable. Be brave and choose to listen to that inner voice of yours and don't let ANYBODY control you like that. You can have a closer connection to the God and this ongoing creation than any of those loud but weak preachers who talk more about their sins than yours without seeing it. I hope that everyone that finds my story relatable can find the true freedom and bliss in this lifetime.
